art showcase Commercial artist Jason Kelly is giving visitors to the Lakes District Museum Gallery a peek behind the scenes with his latest exhibition (from 24 December). Jason’s very Kiwi work is available throughout New Zealand as posters, notecards and prints, but in this show you’ll get to see the original artwork. Jason, who moved to Arrowtown from Christchurch in May, started out as a signwriter and still paints almost exclusively onto recycled wood. The focus of the exhibition will be his 18 stamp designs. The stamps celebrate traditional Kiwi food from asparagus rolls to pikelets, and an activity sheet will encourage kids to learn the recipes or write a good oldfashioned letter to be posted in a letterbox specially installed by NZ Post. Jason will also be exhibiting some of his personal work, in which, he says, he gets the chance to be a little more outthere than usual.

trolley derby fun The 2015 Arrowtown Trolley Derby faced a challenge from the weather but still came up trumps. Eight hand-built trolleys of varying sophistication and responsiveness raced in pairs on a tricky course made even trickier than previous years by a new grassy finish and a spot of afternoon rain. Despite the usual skids and spills nothing was injured except pride and the Arrowtown Preschool was the winner on the day, with around $10,000 – about the same amount as last year – raised. Organiser Anton Schmitz was more than happy with the crowd turnout, as were GJ Gardner Homes who have confirmed they will be back in 2016 as main sponsor. The winner of the main race was the builders.co.nz horse and chariot driven by Martin Worswick, defeating Troy Stewart after the cart sponsored by regular entrants Monk Earthworks tipped over on the notorious hairpin bend. Anton says there will be a few changes next year that should make the race even more popular. ‘We’ll make it free entry for unbranded trolleys, and we’re working on having the new Rotary Club kids’ trolleys able to come down some of the course.’ The entry forms and website haven’t been updated for next year yet but Anton welcomes early entries by emailing trolleyrace@gmail.com. autumn festival changes Planning for April’s Arrowtown Autumn Festival is well advanced under new co-ordinator Pip Norton. The committee have made the decision to condense the festival into five action-packed days from 21 April until Anzac Day. The old favourites will be there, including the market day and the scarecrow competition, plus the festival party, the parade and the Pie & Pint will all be getting a fresh twist. Pip, who recently moved to the area from Wellington, is excited to be part of the new-look festival. ‘We want the whole community to be involved in 2016 and so we have a new free competition that everyone can take part in. Look out for the posters as there will be more on this in the New Year!’ She is very appreciative of the hard-working volunteer committee and other locals who generously donate time and money, but mentions they always could use more help. If you would like to join and/or donate to the festival, please contact Pip at arrowtownfestival@gmail. com. ‘Every little helps!’ she says.

post office market day This year’s market day will take place on Sunday 27 December, when throngs of locals and holidaymakers will make their way around more than 90 stalls selling local arts and crafts, food, plants and much more on the Library Green. The event is a fundraiser for the Arrowtown Post Office, which was bought by the community from NZ Post in 1991 to save it from closure. long lunch This year’s Arrowtown Long Lunch was another big success, according to event manager Malcolm Blakey. Once again the weather gods smiled and 400 people lined long tables in Buckingham Street to savour the food of 12 restaurants. The diners, many of them local but some from as far away as the North Island, were protected from previous years’ sunburn disasters by umbrellas newly purchased by the event. Malcolm says that unfortunately this year there will be no charity beneficiary as the charity they had lined up pulled out, so the event ran on a straightforward break-even basis.
