school extravaganza
Photos by Sarah Bultitude
Arrowtown School’s Karen Neill is on a high. The Green of My Dreams, the show she put together for the students, played to rapturous applause at three packed performances last week. ‘I am terribly happy the show was so successful as it was slightly out of my comfort zone,’ she says. Some of Karen’s colleagues had suggested a play might make a nice change for the kids. So advanced writing teacher Wendy Clarke drafted a play based on Karen’s concept and Karen, the school’s performing arts and Te Reo specialist, added in the Maori component. The result was a traveller’s tale with music and dance that followed a moa and her friends around the world as she tried to find where she belonged. The moa was played by Lily Skipper and Sarah Dawson, the eccentric Ms Flossy by Greta Balfour and Natalie Hutchens, and the sarcastic hyena by Cameron Leydon and Oliver Stewart. The production was an epic undertaking, with over 500 children performing in a show that involved costumes, props, professional lighting and a giant video screen. ‘It certainly was a costly business,’ says Karen. ‘The staging alone was $4000. The sound and lighting was another $4000.’ Megan Ide of Remarkables Primary School and APS teacher aide Nicky Patelesio made the props and lead costumes, and each class helped create their own costumes. Melissa Hinves and Colleen Flemmer designed the poster and researched the photos used in the video. Stephanie MacDonald and Margaret Young were the seamstresses, and Jeannie Crawford did the makeup for the hyenas. ‘It was a real community affair, which was fantastic,’ says Karen. ‘I love this town!’ 3
check out…off the wall Since buying Off The Wall gallery and store earlier this year, Stuart and Jane Adams have given it, and the brand, a bit of a facelift. They’re still selling art, jewellery and homewares, but that’s not all that is going on in this busy courtyard – the pair have wasted no time diving in to the community they now call home. getting involved
Stuart joined the Autumn Festival committee, they’ve donated prizes for fundraisers, and they were sponsors of the Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival. They also hosted Ira Mitchell-Kirk’s children’s art workshops: ‘It was a great funfilled time for both the children and onlookers,’ says Stuart, ‘and it could very well be that one of them is inspired to go on and become an artist.’ Stuart and Jane are themselves inspired by their new surroundings. While Stuart is focused on his Bent Metal Design label – ‘Watch this space,’ he says – Jane is seeking out new products. During September these included honeywrap™, a reusable, environmentally friendly, non-toxic alternative to plastic wrap. It’s made in New Zealand from organic cotton soaked in beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil. ‘There are some truly remarkable people making terrific products right here in our own back yard,’ says Jane, ‘and we’re eager to showcase them to our local community and visitors alike.’ 4

get active for summer Spring is kicking into gear and now’s a great time to launch our new series of family missions. Adin May of Arrowtown Bike Hire has got some great ideas to inspire families to get out, be active and explore our local area. There will be a few questions thrown in to test the kids and quite possibly the parents too. ‘Exploring is about learning, not just eating bugs, getting cold or leaving your 12-year-old stranded on an island and calling the coastguard,’ says Adin, ‘so get out and create some lifelong memories.’ Look out for a new adventure in every second issue of the loop arrowtown.

bush creek eco walk
Take the kids for a walk or ride from Butlers Green up the Bush Creek Track and explore the native flora and fauna. Stop in a clearing and have a cook-up of sausages with bread and hot chocolate (on a portable gas stove – no open fires!) to create a meal the kids will remember. Try and spot the native fish in the creek. Can you identify the species? Why are the native beech trees only on the true left of the valley? For answers (or Adin’s best guess) visit the Arrowtown Bike Hire facebook page. And post photos of your adventure there to win prizes.

arrowtown bowling club Our local bowling club held its opening day for the summer season on Saturday 26 September at the bowling green on Hertford Street. A good turnout of Arrowtown locals as well as members of the Queenstown club enjoyed some friendly competition on the green and a good catch-up in the pavilion. The bowling club doesn’t stand on ceremony and is open to all locals and visitors at any time for a $5 green fee. The club has bowls, mats and jacks so all you need to supply are flat-soled shoes, and if you don’t have those, don’t worry, bowls shoes are available – even bare feet will do.

200 g sugar 4 Tbsp golden syrup 1 Tbsp baking soda Boil sugar and syrup together in a large saucepan until golden brown (a few minutes) being careful not to burn it. Then quickly add baking soda and fold in quickly then remove spoon. The mixture will magically transform into a puffed up toffee. Spoon it out onto baking paper and allow to cool! Break it into pieces and eat as is or crumble onto your favourite ice cream or dip in chocolate for a special treat. Fun to let the kids watch you make but be very careful with hot caramel!

After 92 years in the Athenaeum Hall the Arrowtown Spring Flower Show is still going strong. Every year the show attracts many knowledgeable exhibitors, but committee member Wendy Clarke is quick to reassure that it is not all cut-throat competition. ‘There is plenty of room for everyone to have a go,’ she says, ‘and we are always happy to help.’ The flowers, of course, are the core

of the show, and as the date is late this year the committee are hoping to see a wide range of flowers in addition to the traditional daffodils. ‘We also have a baking and craft section,’ says Wendy. Arrowtown Primary School will be involved: children in years 1 and 2 will create something at school for the show. If your children are years 3 to 8 there are sections for them too. The Arrowtown Spring Flower Show will be held Friday 16 October from 1 to 5 pm. As well as the flower, baking and craft displays, there will be plant stalls, white elephant, whitebait raffles and craft stalls. More information at arrowtownspringshow.webs. com. 11
