about ‘shaping our future’ On its website, Shaping Our Future is described as ‘a process designed to create a great future for our district. It aims to bring together community, commerce and council around a shared vision. It is supported by council but driven by the community.’ Shaping Our Future was initiated by the Centre for Sustainable Practice. There have already been forums discussing district-wide issues including energy, the economy, events, innovation, tourism, transport and conservation. In April Glenorchy had a local forum like the one planned for Arrowtown.

help shape arrowtown The Shaping Our Future organisation has issued an invitation to local residents and workers to create a plan for the Arrowtown community. Shaping Our Future executive Anita Golden hopes that in two public forums the community will come together to talk about the context of current issues and consider the effects and opportunities of a growing population. The aim is to develop a long-term vision for Arrowtown as well as identify issues that need to be addressed in the short- to mid-term. ‘Residents need to ask themselves, how will Arrowtown look in 2060?,’ says Anita. ‘How do we, the community, want it to look? What do we have to do to get there?’ The forums will be ‘world café’ style with groups working together around tables. They will be inclusive of all ages and interests and will seek consensus as far as possible. And it’s not all talk, Anita says. ‘We will be asking for volunteers to form a task force to expand and carry forward the ideas raised at the forum.’ The Shaping Our Future Arrowtown Community Visioning Forums will be held on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August 2015 at 6 pm in the Athenaeum Hall. The format will be the same for both evenings so you only need to attend one night. RSVP executive@shapingourfuture.org.nz or phone Anita on 021 222 1231. You can find out more about the organisation at shapingourfuture. org.nz.

councillor comment Councillor Scott Stevens offers this update on Arrowtown goings-on: Today, we are reaping the benefits of the work of previous Arrowtown residents with foresight. In 1994 and 2003 this community ran a series of visioning forums that have been the backbone of planning for the Arrowtown we live, work and play in today. Now it is this generation’s turn to contribute. On behalf of independent facilitators Shaping Our Future, I invite you to take part in creating a long-term vision for the Arrowtown community by attending one of the forums outlined on page 3. This is a golden opportunity to discuss and prioritise the things most important to us. It is vital a good cross-section of our community attends and helps shape the future of this unique village. Do not miss your chance to be part of the process.

pump track news Over the past few months Vicky Jenkins of Arrow Bikes has been working slowly but surely towards getting a pump track built in the centre of Arrowtown. ‘The main purpose will be to teach children how to ride their bikes and develop skills in a safe and friendly environment,’ she says, ‘It will be a fantastic community resource that will fit in perfectly with the current network of cycle trails and complement the skate park.’ Well the project is now set to get off the drawing board and onto the ground. After identifying a suitable site between the main Ramshaw Lane car park and the skate park, Vicky got the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association, Village Association and Primary School on board. She’s had numerous meetings with Council and now has their support as well. The next step is funding. ‘We’re applying to various community trusts for financial assistance and this is looking really positive,’ Vicky says. ‘But we also need to raise some funds ourselves, so we are approaching local businesses and interested parties for sponsorship.’ She says that if anyone is keen to learn more about sponsorship, they shouldn’t hesitate to get in touch REPAIRS | SERVICING with her. ‘As long as we can raise SALES | RENTAL BIKES enough funds, we should be able to Arrowtown’s local bike shop get the pump track built and ready for use before summer.’ Mon to Fri: 9 am – 6 pm You can contact Vicky at Arrow Sat: 9 am – 2 pm Bikes, 4/9 Bush Creek, Arrowtown. 4/9 Bush Creek, Arrowtown Phone 409 8140. retirement village proposal ell nn Do Mc Rd

For many years Arrowtown residents have been forced to move away if they wanted to live in a retirement village, but it’s looking like that may change.

Ron Anderson and the people behind the Aspiring Lifestyle Retirement Village in Wanaka have combined with the Monk family to propose a village just outside Arrowtown.

Contrary to rumours around town the 12-hectare development would not be next to the Arrowtown boundary. It would be located about 2.5 km up McDonnell Rd, in the paddock where the airstrip currently is, next to the Hills driving range. There would be 98 villas, 46 apartments and a 60-bed aged-care facility, as well as a restaurant, cafĂŠ, swimming pool, gym, bowling green and library. Spokesman Richard Anderson says that the business model for the village has not yet been confirmed, but more information may be available in public meetings to be held within the next couple of months ahead of the resource consent application. Details will be published in the loop arrowtown when they become available.
