arrowtown spring arts festival Preparation is well advanced for Arrowtown’s new arts festival from 17 to 20 September, and registration for more than 50 workshops, talks, dinners and tours led by a range of talented locals and nationally renowned tutors is open. Organiser Julie Hughes says, ‘You too can learn to paint, draw, sculpt, write, sew, knit or act and sing over the four days. Pretty much everyone has a passion for something arts-based and this is your chance to kick-start into action or to learn new skills.’ Among the tutors is Randall Froude, who has now taught over 2500 people to paint. One of his most famous students is internationally successful local artist Ivan Clarke. If the performing arts is your thing, you can learn about anything from front of house to costumes, props and, of course, acting at a Remarkable Theatre workshop. Participants write, rehearse, stage and perform a play – all over the course of 24 hours. ‘We hope lots of locals and visitors jump on board to sign up for a class and enjoy getting involved in this brand new event,’ says Julie. ‘There are also opportunities to be involved in an arts market plus we’re looking for artists of all kinds to busk and create art in the open air where people can watch.’ The Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival runs from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 September 2015. Printed programmes will be available soon and details can be found at www.arrowevents.co.nz.

councillor comment Councillor Scott Stevens offers this update on Arrowtown goings-on: For those of you who have lived in Arrowtown for a long time, you may have participated in our community workshops in 1993 and 2004 that have formed the basis of Arrowtown’s planning, development and design guidelines. We are due for another one and I hope to be in a position to announce the 2015 Arrowtown community workshop in the next edition of The Loop. We are the people living here, so it is important we keep the town moving in the direction we want. Watch this space. In other council news, anyone who has tried parking in the Ramshaw Lane, Butler Green or Hansen car parks recently would have been greeted by a muddy mess. Obviously this is not acceptable for residents, visitors and business operators in Arrowtown. Council staff have been out to see the problem and expect some major improvements very soon. Finally, the air pollution problem in Arrowtown does not seem to be getting any better, in fact I believe it is getting worse. For the sake of our air quality please burn dry wood. It is not permitted to burn coal and other highly poisonous fuels. If you are being directly affected by a neighbour’s toxic smoke and a door knock and conversation does not work, the Otago Regional Council are PUB MEALS BAR SNACKS obliged to take action. All they WOOD FIRED PIZZA OVEN EVENTS need is a phone call. The ORC air pollution hotline is 0800 800 033. SPECIAL FUNCTIONS WEDDINGS FULLY LICENSED PLUS OUR VERY OWN MOONSHINE WINES

rippa rugby After winning the Otago champs, Arrowtown School’s Rippa Rugby team will once again be flying the flag for Otago at the Rippa Rugby World Cup in Wellington in September. trolley derby news Anton Schmitz tells us that entries for the Arrowtown Pre-School Trolley Derby on 29 November are progressing well, and they’re delighted to hear the fire brigade will be back for another crack at the title. He’d love to hear from anyone who has an old trolley they won’t be racing, as several companies are looking to find a trolley to race rather than build one from scratch. The winner of the Trolley Derby Lego competition was Nikau Barnes, age 5, who wins a Site Trampoline voucher. Second placed Toby Pollard, age 4, wins a $20 Remarkable Sweet Shop voucher. And in third place, Samuel Tate, age 4, wins a $15 Remarkable Sweet Shop voucher. Fourth place was Luke Hutton age 5, who wins Lego sweets. Prizes can be collected from Cotter Ave Nursery, Arrowtown.

casino night fun Everyone who came along to the Great Gold Rush Casino Night on Saturday, Kerry Templer reports, will tell you they had so much fun they hope it will be an annual event. Punters took part in more than 20 bidding wars with both real and funny money, auctions, and enjoyed dancers, delicious food from Mann Made Catering, slater racing and a whole lot of laughs. Fiona Lawson came over from Queenstown especially to support the Hospice, and so she did, outbidding Cheryl Collie on a framed Grahame Sydney picture. Camiller Deeman secured a handmade Maori cloak donated by Andrea and Mark Edghill, narrowly beating out Victoria Tovey. Wendy Ebsworth, meanwhile, won so much money she couldn’t even count it. Kerry says a huge thank you goes out to the Lions Club, bar staff, Buckingham Belles and all the other volunteers and sponsors for the evening. The final tally for the night has not been confirmed, but it is safe to say the Hospice will be walking away with well over $1500 from the night.

your flop-free recipe crème brûlée Makes 10 ramekins 1 litre cream 11 egg yolks 200 g sugar Heat cream till just under boiling. Whisk yolks and sugar together, then pour on hot cream, whisking as you do. Pass through a sieve into a jug. At this point you can add a dash of liqueur, brandy, rum etc. You can also put some fruit in the bottom of your ramekin. Nice combinations are peach and brandy, raspberries & Grand Marnier, strawberry & Kirsch. Otherwise the classic brûlée would be made with 1 teaspoon

Janet de Wagt Referencing the Land

of vanilla paste or extract in the cream when heating. Place ramekins into deep tray with an inch of water in it. Pour mix into ramekins, place in oven at 150°C. It should take about 35 to 40 minutes. To check, shake the tray slightly: the middle should have a wobble but not look runny. Cool and refrigerate overnight if possible. When glazing, I find it is best to use fine white caster sugar as it melts a lot quicker. A heaped teaspoon on each dish should be fine, and either glaze under a hot grill or if you have a blowtorch then burn the sugar with the torch, rolling the ramekin around slightly, until golden brown.
