Funds raised by an upcoming casino evening in Arrowtown will help provide the Wakatipu with a palliative care nurse. ‘It’s something this area desperately needs,’ says organiser Julie Hughes. ‘Hospice Southland provides services free of charge to terminally ill patients and it is an amazing support and comfort for the families to have this help.’ The Great Gold Rush Casino Evening will be held on Saturday 1 August at the Athenaeum Hall. The event is run by the Queenstown Lions Club and Arrow Events. ‘It will be a fun night of entertainment,’ says Julie. Each person is given $500,000 of ‘funny money’ to use at the gaming tables and in 20 auctions throughout the evening. ‘You never know what you’re going to get in the funny money auctions because you just win the chance to pick an envelope. You could be bidding on a Fiordland cruise or a helicopter ride. Or it could be a glaucoma test at the optician’s. Or it could be a packet of toothpicks!’ There will also be ‘real money’ silent auctions for items donated by local businesses. A continuous supper and a cash bar will keep gamblers fed and watered. referencing the land Janet de Wagt is surely one of the most industrious artists currently working in New Zealand. The Dunedin landscape painter is obsessed with capturing large views in small work. ‘I have become consumed by this, painting one work a day for the past nine months and still busy working on the last 80 to reach my total of 365!’ Recently Janet, whose exhibition ‘Referencing the Land’ is at the Lakes District Museum from 24 July to 30 August, has spent a lot of time travelling our district capturing what we usually see only through a car window. ‘The greatness of the south is shown in the paintings of the journey over the Crown Range,’ Janet says, ‘the views that we drive by, the local views.’ There are also works, large and small, depicting the Chinese Village in the exhibition. 5

songstars in arrowtown Local music maven Margaret O’Hanlon says 2015’s ten Songstars artists are the best yet: ‘We have the highest overall calibre of performers to date.’ That’s saying something: this is the fifth time Margaret has run the showcase for Otago and Southland original artists performing their own new music and the past winners are Katie Raven, Holly Arrowsmith, Sam Maxwell and Margaret O’Hanlon Tai Forrester. To date Songstars has developed, produced and recorded 42 original songs by 41 artists. This year’s finalists include a number of very local musicians. Tom Maxwell is well known around Arrowtown and has released an EP. Sarah Foley, another Arrowtowner, studied at the MAINZ music school in Auckland and has enjoyed radio airplay. Queenstown-based American Derek Smith has an album on iTunes, and Fee Stephenson is an outstanding local musical-theatre talent. Dominic Hazell, Paul Shipman and Mike Kennedy are established musicians around town while high schooler Theo Baumfield has an exceptional future ahead of him, Margaret says. Ami Lyons comes from a musical family in the UK, and Jazzmin Pearse placed third in the 2011 Songstars when she was 16. Mike Chunn (formerly Split Enz, now CEO of Play It Strange) attended the 2013 show and described Songstars as ‘a concept with integrity...it’s an extraordinary thing.’ He will be back in 2015 to serve on a panel of industry judges that will combine with the audience popular vote to choose the winner. Songstars is at the Arrowtown 0-3yrs & 3-6yrs Hours 8.30 am-5.30 pm Athenaeum Hall 23 to 25 July at 8 pm. (optional sessions available) Tickets are available from Eventfinder, Our new hours are iSite Queenstown and Queenstown 8.30 am-5.30 pm Events Centre.

kickstarting art Arrowtown’s Paul Sewter has found a very modern way to fund a unique art exhibition – a Kickstarter campaign. The local artist is aiming to create an exhibit, called ‘The Voice of a Young Sailor’, in the middle of Lake Hayes. Depending on the amount of support he gets, there will be up to seven artworks from his ‘Better Waters’ series encased in acrylic glass boxes and floating in a chain. As with all Kickstarters, there are a range of rewards for different levels of pledges. The campaign got off to a great start with New York gallerist and author Ed Winkleman making the first pledge; to find out more go to kickstarter.com and search for ‘floating art exhibition’. 9

sponsoring your flop-free recipe no fail yorkshire puddings You’ll need 1 cup of eggs, flour and milk, using volume measures rather than grams. Whisk eggs and flour together then milk, add a splash of oil and salt and pepper. Rest the mix for a minimum of 1 hour (very important!). Preheat oven to 200°C. Put splash of oil in bottom of each pan of a muffin tray and heat in oven till very hot. Fill each pan one-third full with mixture. Bake till really risen, opening door carefully to quickly check then turn down to 160°C to dry out and set. Do the same with a 20 cm cake tin and you will get large Yorkshires you can fill with stew and veggies, or sausage, mash and gravy. Traditionally leftovers are spread with jam for a yummy treat after Sunday lunch. 10
