postal confusion Jane Douglas, manager at Museum Post, wants to allay residents’ fears about the upcoming changes to postal deliveries. ‘We have been getting quite a few phone calls asking when Arrowtown is going down to three days a week mail delivery. There seems to be some confusion as to when it’s happening and what it means.’ Jane explains that although alternate day delivery for standard mail has begun in major centres, smaller towns are still getting daily deliveries. When alternate day deliveries are introduced in Arrowtown at some point in the next one to two years, the alternate delivery days will apply to standard mail only. Priority post (FastPost and courier) will still be delivered six days a week, so the postie will be out and about every day. Hopefully, that clears things up!
goodbye to the dairy Cynthia Wilkins is getting ready to say farewell to The Village Dairy in Adamson Drive – but a bit sooner than she expected. She says she had been planning to sell up but not for another couple of years: ‘I wasn’t ready to sell – it all just happened out of the blue.’ Cynthia had turned away a number of people wanting to buy the business but when a friend’s daughter approached her she decided to go for coffee to hear her out, and ended up taking the offer. She says the decision was made easier by the fact there was a bit of pressure for her to take over the space next door herself. The new owners, Amanda and Brendon Colmore-Williams, will be taking over on 28 August. They will be extending into the old video store next door and reopening as a Four Square. They hope to start the refurbishment soon so they can stay open throughout. Amanda is a local from way back: she grew up here and this opportunity means she can move back from Christchurch with her family, much to the delight of her mother Alison Beaumont. Cynthia, who has lived in the area for 40 years, has owned the dairy for the last decade. She’s not sure what she will do after the changeover. ‘Hopefully a nice easy job will turn up!’ She is looking forward to a change as it’s been a busy 10 years since she took over the business while her kids Angus and Bonnie were still at school. four weddings...and another wedding All weddings are special, of course, but there was something remarkable about the wedding of Tessa Hughes and Jonathan Ryan on 27 June at St John’s Church, Arrowtown. By choosing that venue, Tessa became the fourth generation of an old Arrowtown family to be married at the same church: Tessa’s parents Julie Stevenson and David Hughes (1993), Julie’s parents Noel Stevenson and Alma Wilson (1962) and Noel’s parents Jack Stevenson and Vera Turner (1936) all said their vows at St John’s. In fact the list of Arrowtown weddings goes one generation further back to Jack’s parents James Stevenson and Rebecca Jenkins, although their 1901 wedding was held in the schoolhouse on the Crown Terrace. James and some of his brothers and sisters had come to New Zealand from Stronsay in the Orkney Islands in 1881, and their parents followed them out in 1894. He farmed on the Crown Terrace while his brother William had a sluicing operation in Brackens Gully. Rebecca was born in 1878 at Macetown, where her Irish father had been storekeeper since 1866. Their son Jack Stevenson, known as Waggoner Jack, was a carter whose six-horse team plied the route between the farms on the terrace and Arrowtown. His son Noel left to farm and raise a family in Mokotua, Southland, but he and wife Alma retired to Arrowtown. Three of their children, including Julie, also felt the pull and have made their homes here, as have Jonathan’s parents Brent and Bridget Ryan. With Tessa and Jonathan living in Arrowtown too, there’s a good chance that a fifth generation will marry at St John’s – but we’ll have to wait a few years for that! 8

councillor comment Councillor Scott Stevens offers this update on Arrowtown goings-on: I have had a busy month representing Arrowtown at the council table with the District Plan review currently dominating my time. We are working on ensuring that any medium density development that is proposed for Arrowtown under the District Plan review responds sensitively to the town’s character. I am pleased to report QLDC planners have taken community feedback on board and I thank the Arrowtown Village Association for organising the public meeting on this matter earlier in the year. If you are not already a member of the AVA I encourage you to get involved by going to their website www.arrowtownvillage.co.nz. I am available to discuss this or any other matter by emailing me at scott.stevens@qldc.govt.nz.
