Chard Farm Winery recently marked its 25th anniversary with a wine tasting soirée and an open day that raised over $5000 for local primary schools. Director and winemaker Rob Hay said he and partner Gerdi Schumann thoroughly enjoyed celebrating with family, friends and the local community. ‘It was lovely to have so many colleagues, locals and, of course, our family mark this occasion with us.’ The Friday 21 February event included a vertical tasting of Chard Farm’s single-vineyard Pinot Noirs spanning 12 years and was a chance to taste other wines from earlier vintages, including the very first. The next day locals and visitors were invited to the winery for a community day with live music and food. Youngsters made the most of a bouncy castle and face painting while parents had the opportunity to buy wine at special prices. The proceeds from wine sales went to Shotover, Remarkables, Arrowtown, St Joseph’s and Queenstown primary schools. Arrowtown principal Chris Bryant says his school’s share will go towards IT needs.

local to play bmw new zealand open Erwin Haefliger will be rubbing shoulders with the pros at next week’s New Zealand Open, thanks to a ‘stroke’ of luck. The Arrowtown Golf Club member’s name was drawn on Saturday from the names of those who attended special golf days sponsored by Sir Michael Hill at six local clubs. Swiss-born Erwin’s prize is to play at least two days of the tournament. But it means he’ll have to give up his volunteering duties. ‘I called them back after Saturday and said I wouldn’t be volunteering any more, as I’ll actually be on the other side of the ropes for the BMW New Zealand Open!’ Erwin says his friends and colleagues are very supportive, and no doubt he’ll have a large and enthusiastic gallery following him. ‘I’ll be thinking very carefully about each shot,’ he says, ‘but getting the shot right is another thing. Being realistic, I may not win the Open, but I’d love to get a hole-in-one and win a big prize!’

Good morning Arrowtown! Nikki Anderson from Arrowtown Hair Co is open and ready for business

My 9-year-old was riding his bike in Arrowtown Skatepark this weekend. As he rode up the ramp of the spine, he realised a small child (on foot) was playing in the the bowl behind. He tried to avoid them but couldn’t quite as he was committed to the jump. His efforts to avoid the child had us in A&E for several hours having his arm x-rayed. The issue here is that even if riders think they have checked the line is clear, they cannot see a small child in the bowl either on a bike or on foot, the height of the spine prevents it. I’m not suggesting small kids should not be there. I’m saying that families with small kids on bikes and scooters need to remember it is a dangerous area and care should be taken. Small kids certainly should not use the bowl as a climbing area, it’s not safe. Ditto young kids walking on the lip of the bowl as riders jump out. Older kids are usually very mindful of the little ones, you see them waiting and waiting for lines to be clear. They know they were given a chance to ride and learn when small themselves. In fact the big kids often help the younger ones learn how to ride in there. I simply think we need to remind parents of safety down there, accidents do occur and we all need to work together to respect each other’s space. And on a final note HELMETS!! You need one even on a running bike or scooter. You’d be surprised how many little ones are not wearing them on that hard concrete. Ouch!
