pint size plays

our own radio station

Arrowtown’s Thomas Brown Gallery on Speargrass Road will be holding 10 short plays in the International play writing competition on Saturday 7 March. For the third year Remarkable Theatre Queenstown are pleased to present their highly esteemed Pint Size Plays short play writing Competition. Entries have been received from all over the world and they are now ready to present the best of them to the Central Otago public for their judgment and enjoyment. The short list of 10 short plays will also be performed in Wanaka Sunday 1 March at Gin and Raspberry Bar and Queenstown Sunday 8 March at SkyCity Casino, which is where the winner will be announced from the 3 performances. Subjects range from job interviews to chess games and sky writing love notes. There’s something for everyone. And everyone gets to vote for their favourite play.

Arrowtown FM – 88.1 was established by Gary Cody recently to provide a live and local service to the Arrowtown community. Gary has been in the media industry for 40 years and has worked in radio all over New Zealand, starting out at Radio NZ in Wellington where he got to learn his valuable skills also working in the Waikato region, Gore and Queenstown. At present testing is still in progress, however a playlist is being developed to touch the demographics with more rock and classics. “Many are advising me as to what style of music they want to hear and I’m trying to manufacture a playlist that will suit most listeners.” says Cody. The live breakfast show from 7 am Monday to Friday is a great way to get all your Arrowtown local news, sport updates, public notices and events with Interviews with local dignitaries on council and local concerns. There will be guest announcers coming in from time to time so if you have any experience in radio feel free to get in touch. Gary has already got permission to put a transmitter up at the Glencoe station to make listening clearer in the Arrowtown area. There will be a website set up with live streaming scheduled late next month. Anyone who would like announcements or suggestions can contact the station on 022 431 0208. 3

farewell for lex and wendy Retiring Arrowtown Ward Councillor, Lex Perkins leaves Arrowtown with concerns over its future. Commenting at his farewell on Sunday 8 February Perkins says the town is fortunate to have so many people working behind the scenes to protect the environment and town, but that it’s essential that Arrowtown continues as a From left: Adam Feeley, Lex & Wendy Perkins. Photo by Geoff Patte ward of the Queenstown Lakes District rson Council. “Everyday some planner or developer is trying to destroy part of the Arrowtown Historic Zone”, says Perkins. David Clarke, Lakes District Museum Director speaking at the farewell praised Lex’s commitment to the village of Arrowtown especially in his role of protection and care of the trees and the environment. Clarke endorsed the need for the new Ward Councillor to have similar aspirations and take on the good work of environmental protection. Adam Feeley said he couldn’t think of a better person to work alongside than Lex. “Not all councillors are loved by the people but Lex has the respect of those people and the community that he cares about,” said Feeley Around 70 people attended the Perkins’s farewell, all with fond memories of Lex’s contribution to the many organisations he has chaired and worked on. Lex and his wife Wendy are retiring to travel throughout the country in their new campervan. A by-election is being held to fill the vacancy with nominations closing at noon on Thursday 5 March. Further candidate information and voter information is available at the QLDC or on www.qldc.govt.nz.
