Does Hair Loss Increase the Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke?

Studies have demonstrated a strong connection between pattern baldness and cardiovascular disease. Early-onset or vertex loss of hair is positively related to hypertension, myocardial infarction (heart attacks), diabetes or death from heart disorders such as atherosclerosis.

White patients are most affected by pattern or androgenetic alopecia, followed by Asians and African Americans, then Native Americans and Eskimos.

The U.S FDA Approves First Systemic Treatment for Alopecia Areata

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Olumiant (baricitinib) once a day oral tablets to treat adult patients with severe alopecia areata, a disorder that often appears as patchy baldness and affects more than 300,000 people in the U.S. each year. This action marks the first FDA approval of a systemic treatment (i.e., treats the entire body rather than a specific location) for alopecia areata. The recommended dose is OLUMIANT 2-mg/day, with an increase to 4-mg/day if treatment response is inadequate. with or without substantial eyelash or eyebrow hair loss, consider treating with 4-mg/day. Once an adequate response is achieved on 4-mg/day, the dosage is to be decreased to 2-mg/day. For more information, visit pg 14.

First US Anti-Aging Wellness Program

The new physician and nutritionist-led program utilizes a 360° approach to aesthetics and lon gevity, designed to empower patients with the clinical data, tools and treatments to reverse the signs of aging and feel their best. “The program was designed for patients who want to receive a custom plan on how to approach anti-aging and wellness together.”- Dr. Julie Russak.

Looking Good, Feeling Good

The global wellness market is valued at $1.5 trillion, roughly four times the size of what governments and NGOs spend globally on preventive care and health promotion. The total market size for hair restoration surgery alone in 2021 was $4.5 billion. Spending on looking and feeling good about your appearance, diet and wellness continues to outpace government investment in medical care. Over the past centuries, scientific progress, innovation, greater investment, and trade and exchange have led to great advancements in prolonging and improving life. But the portion of life we human beings spend in moderate and poor health hasn’t changed, meaning we spend more years in poor health than at any point in history.

Nostalgia - One of the privileges of editing International Hair Authority is receiving free samples of new products. I have a cupboard full of laser prototypes, shampoos and conditioners de veloped by stylists, and different types of hair systems. I was even offered free hair for life by Sy Sperling for helping him launch and develop Hair Club. I was reminded of this the other day in the shower when I reach for my Anagen Therapy shampoo from James Britt and then picked up my Hair Max conditioner, generously provided by my friends at HairMax. I try everything that comes across my desk and interview the people behind the product. Failing that, at least flag I’ll sometimes them in our “flash reports” so other people can check them out too. We work in a very dynamic market and the competition is intense. But for those brands that make it, the rewards are considerable.

Uncertainty Remains: Staying relevant in a chang ing market – The following quote summarizes information gathered by McKinsey & Company and presented in a recent Consumer Pulse Survey. Although the survey was carried out among Asian consumers, the same at titudes carry over into North America, and even more acutely into Europe.

The report states, “Recent infection spikes serve as a reminder that the world is not yet in the clear. Macroeconomic factors (such as rising inflation and an economic slowdown) and geopolitical disruptions (such as the war in Ukraine, which has resulted in a massive humanitarian and refugee crisis; soaring prices for essentials; a rotating energy policy; threatened food se curity; an intensifying race for critical materials, equipment, and commodities; and reconfigured global value chains and sourcing strategies, among others) have added to the mixed outlook among consumers. Amid this uncertainty, one thing is clear: consumers are unlikely to fully return to their prepandemic behavior.”

Personal care and wellness have become more important than ever and men and women are changing diets, exercise, grooming/beauty products and daily routines. Products and services are being scrutinized for relevance and value. It is a time for companies to redefine their mission and realign with changing attitudes. Key considerations; more personal/inti mate messaging, proof of performance, social engagement/ giving back.

Looking to Diversify?- Your hair can be cut, styled, or colored to express your mood and personality. But what about your skin? The skin is the largest organ in the body and it’s crucial to give it equal care and attention. What if there was an easy way for you to help your clients not only main tain but also improve upon this most fragile asset? Fortunately, technology has made advances which now allow us offer top quality skincare treatments. One such solution comes from Venus Concepts, the same people who acquired ARTAS, the computer-assisted hair transplant system. Robotic facials are an innovative treat ment that uses powerful vacuum systems along with steam ing functions & microcurrent generators to gently remove impurities from pores every few minutes. This new technol ogy has been gaining momentum in recent years, with many physicians opting for this option over traditional surgery or invasive techniques like lipectomy due their less severe side effects and faster recovery period.

2022 World Congress of Trichology - I recently re turned from the annual World Trichology Society conference in Orlando. De spite concerns about Covid, this was a sold out 2-day event that attracted trichol ogists from as far away as Australia, Africa, and Europe. Trichology is getting a lot of attention as consumers seek more detailed information about the causes of hair loss and the science behind the dif ferent therapies becoming available. For readers who want to learn more about the causes and research related to hair loss, we summarize some of the recent clinical studies in a special Trichology section on our website. They may be Technical and difficult to read, but they contain valuable insights. Do check them out.

CBD RISING

CBD, or cannibinoid, is a compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD has been shown to have a variety of potential health benefits, including reducing inflammation and relieving anxiety. Recently, CBD has also been gaining attention for its potential role in hair and skin care. CBD oil has been shown to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss, making it an effective treatment for both male and female pattern baldness. TricoMax Inc. has recently launched a specialist CBD product for people with curly/textured hair.

CBD oil can also be used to help relieve dry skin and acne. In addition, CBD has anti-aging properties that can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. As more research is conducted on CBD, it is likely that even more uses for this versatile compound will be discovered.

A recent example is Colgate-Palmolive which has filed three international patents on CBD oral care blends that integrated a cannabinoid for antibacterial efficacy and anti-inflammatory action. The blends, it said, could be used to make a range of oral care products, including toothpaste, mouthwash, oral gels, mouth spray and even chewing gum. The personal care major also filed an international patent on a CBD antiperspirant blend it said offered anti-irritant properties for the skin.

After Robot-Assisted Hair Restoration, Robotic Facials

Venus Concept Inc. has announced that the first patient has been treated in a U.S. Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical study evaluating the safety and efficacy of the Company’s Aime™ robotic technology for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. Aime is a robotic plat form designed to provide micro-coring for medical aesthetic applications.

“The introduction of robotics is one of the most exciting breakthroughs in aesthetic medicine,” said principal investigator Steven Dayan, M.D. “While robotic technologies have impacted nearly all fields of medicine and industry, they have been slow to take a hold in aesthetics given the need to be precise, patient and provider friendly, and affordable, while also delivering a reliable aesthetic improvement. However, recent advancements in technology and thinking are leading to newer designs and treatments.”

Dr. Dayan continued: “We are pleased to have successfully completed the initial patient treatment with the Aime robotic platform for this important clinical study. Aime represents an innovative approach to aesthetic procedures, with the potential to provide clinicians with consistent, predictable treatment delivery and enhanced visualization. Aime could very well differentiate adopting clinicians as the use of robotic technology emerges in aesthetic procedures.”

The study is a prospective, multicenter clinical study evaluating the safety and efficacy of mechanical coring to

improve the appearance of wrinkles of the face. It will be conducted at four investigational centers in the U.S. and consist of up to 70 subjects between 22 and 75 years of age. The study will evaluate the progress of subjects after two treatments on the cheeks, delivered 30 days apart. The primary endpoint will be the proportion of correctly identified photograph sets from baseline and Day 120 as assessed by at least 3 independent blinded evaluators.

WORLDWIDE HAIR RESTORATION TRENDS

ISHRS 2022 Practice Census Results

DOWN TO ONE HAIR TRANSPLANTATION PROCEDURE FROM 3.4 TO ACHIEVE DESIRED RESULT

Surgical advancements, improvements in efficiency driving need for fewer treatments

According to results of a conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), 68% of members reported performing an average of one procedure per patient in 2021 to achieve the desired hair restoration result. This represents a significant improvement, as ISHRS members estimated an average of 3.4 procedures in 2019 and 5 procedures in 2016 were needed per patient to achieve the desired result.

“Over the last 30 years, the field of hair restoration surgery has experienced a considerable transformation resulting in enhanced results with fewer procedures for patients seeking a permanent solution for hair loss,” said Nilofer Farjo, MBChB, FISHRS, president of the ISHRS.

“In the early 90s, it was common for patients to undergo several small strip surgeries of a few hundred grafts. With now refined Follicular Unit Transplantation techniques –both linear excision and follicular unit excision – male and female patients are benefiting from the latest advances.”

While the COVID-19 pandemic continued to impact non-essential surgeries in mostly the early part of 2021, the survey reported that ISHRS members treated more patients seeking nonsurgical treatments for hair loss than those opting for surgical procedures. Specifically, 1,592,588 nonsurgical patients sought treatment in 2021 (a 14% increase from 2019), with 628,604 surgical patients treated in 2021 (an 8% decrease from 2019).

ISHRS physicians evaluate each patient’s hair loss individually and recommend treatment options based on the specific diagnosis and the patient’s expectations. The three most commonly prescribed nonsurgical treatments in 2021 included oral finasteride, topical minoxidil and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Another consequence of the pandemic that has had an impact on the reasons people sought hair restoration treatment in 2021 was the “Zoom effect”.

To gauge this new phenomenon of being more conscious of looking good on camera while working or socializing from home, ISHRS physicians were asked about how this trend affected new patients’ decisions to address their hair loss. In fact, 25% of ISHRS members reported that the majority of their new patients indicated regular Zoom/video meetings influenced their decision to seek treatment for hair loss.

“Our survey shows that for one-fourth of new patients seeking help for hair loss last year, becoming more aware of how they look during Zoom meetings impacted their decision,” said Dr. Farjo. “For those who opted for hair restoration surgery while working from home, the ability to heal at home rather than going into the workplace likely made this decision even more appealing since patients could hide signs of surgery easier by video than in person.”

Other notable trends and facts from the ISHRS 2022 Practice Census survey include:

6 Hair Authority Summer/Fall 2022

• The total market size for hair restoration surgery in 2021 was $4.5 billion USD

• More than half of both male and female surgical patients worldwide fell between the ages of 30 to 49 years old, 57.2% and 54.8% respectively

• In 2021, ISHRS members treated a higher percentage of men with surgical hair restoration procedures (87.3%) than women (12.7%)

• Body hair transplantation remains popular

• Among men, 13% of procedures targeted non-scalp areas of the body, of which beards/moustaches accounted for 4% of procedures

• Among women, 17% of procedures targeted non-scalp areas of the body, of which eyebrows accounted for 11% of procedures

• 51% of ISHRS members reported there are Black Market hair transplant clinics in their cities

• 5.4% of hair restoration patients sought treatment to repair previous surgery from another physician/black market hair transplant in 2021, up from 4.2% in 2019

• 16% of ISHRS members changed their pricing structure as a result of the Black Market

FICA Tax Tip Credit

The PBA Government Affairs team is trying to get Congress to understand the importance of including the FICA Tax Tip Credit included in the “Year End Bill.” As the second-highest tipped industry behind restaurants, the salon industry should receive parity in the tax code, but they do not. The restaurant industry claims a dollar-for-dollar tax tip credit on the employer portion of FICA taxes that businesses pay on tips, but the salon industry doesn’t get the same benefit.

Hair salons, barbershops and other beauty service establishments are some of the most reliable paths to the middle class for women and minorities, employing more than 2x the national average. The 45B tax credit, which provides a dollar-for-dollar credit to salons on FICA taxes paid on customer-paid tips, would allow salons to keep money in their business and extend the benefits to their employees. There are legislative opportunities to include the Small Business Tax Fairness and Compliance Simplification Act before the end of the year.

Take action now to ask Congress to extend the 45B FICA Tax Tip Credit to salons by the end of the year.

National Alopecia Awareness Month

September is both National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and National Alopecia Awareness Month. Both diseases can impact hair growth and cause permanent loss. It is estimated that 6.8 million people are affected by alopecia, and it often starts in childhood (source: healthline.com).

Every day in the U.S. approximately 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. More than 95% of childhood cancer survivors have significant treatment-related health issues (source: St Jude). Hair loss is the most dramatic side effect. Losing hair has a far greater impact than just the child’s physical appearance. Wigs for Kids, a US charity, is committed to helping these children to have confidence and feel beautiful from the inside out during these challenging times. They are asking for continued support to allow them to serve children experiencing medical related hair loss. (wigsforkids.org).

WHAT’S THE RISK OF BEING THE MOST HANDSOME GUY?

Staying That Way!

The world is full of beau tiful people, but it doesn’t always treat them as such.

While some have been able to use their appear ance in a positive way, others find themselves being ridiculed because they’re not considered “perfect” by society’s standards; this includes both popular celebrities who get asked questions about how much money they make on set every day while working together (e.g., actors like Brad Pitt) and less fortunate figures such Miley Cyrus’ ex-boyfriend Angus Young from AC/DC rock band).

When it comes to men with bald scalps, there’s no shortage of heart throbs in Hollywood. From Bruce Willis and Vin Diesel all the way down to Stanley Tucci or Dwayne Johnson, currently the highest paid actor. But these same high-profile stars are often drubbed online for their scalp conditions if they make the wrong social or po litical move. Last year people began commenting on Prince William’s hair loss after he upset royal fans over his spat with Harry. And Elon Musk fared no better when people began tweeting before/after photographs of his newly grown hair after he announced his intention of purchasing Twitter.

How the Metaverse Can Change Hair Loss

WHAT IS THE METAVERSE AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The metaverse is a digital world that is created by computers. It is similar to the virtual world in video games, but it is more realistic and can be used for many different purposes. For hair loss consultations, the metaverse could provide a more realistic and immersive experience than Zoom or other virtual consultation tools.

The metaverse is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to revolutionize the way we consult with patients about hair loss. As the technology develops, we will be able to offer even more immersive and realistic experiences that can help patients make the best decisions for their hair.

For example, by using the latest ai tools, hair loss professionals could offer their clients visions of how they might look in the future and even how other people might

react. This would give patients a much better idea of what to expect from their treatment and could help them make more informed decisions.

This technology might be of special value to hair transplant clinics because prospective clients could see how they would look with different levels of grafts or even different placement of grafts. In this way, the metaverse can be used to create virtual consultations where clients can explore different options and get advice from experts in a safe and realistic environment.

The metaverse is still in its early stages of development, but it has great potential to revolutionize the way we consult with clients and patients. As hair loss treatment becomes increasingly personalized, the metaverse will play an important role in helping us understand and meet patient expectations.

HOW THE METAVERSE CAN HELP HAIR LOSS PATIENTS

Here are a few ways that the metaverse can help those struggling with hair loss:

The first way is by providing a space for people to connect with others who are also struggling with hair loss. In the metaverse, people can share their experiences and connect with others who understand what they’re going through. This can help people feel less alone and provide support and encouragement.

Another way the metaverse can help is by providing resources and information. There are many helpful articles, videos, and other resources readily available. This can be a great way for people to learn more about their condition and find ways to cope.

Finally, the metaverse can serve as a space for experimentation. With so many options available in the virtual world, people can explore different styles and looks without having to worry about permanent changes. This can be a great way for people to find a look that feels right for them and boost their confidence.

1. The benefits of the metaverse for hair loss patients

2. The ways in which the metaverse can help hair loss patients

3. The potential of the metaverse to change hair loss treatment

ARE THERE ANY RISKS FROM USING THE METAVERSE?

There are some risks associated with using the metaverse, but they are outweighed by the benefits. One risk is that the metaverse can be a space for cyber-bullying. This can be especially harmful to people who are already struggling with their self-esteem. Another risk is that the metaverse can become addictive.

HOW TO GET STARTED

If you’re struggling with thinning hair, the metaverse may be a great way to get help. Here are three ways to get started: Connect with others who are also experiencing thinning hair. In the metaverse, you can connect with others who understand what you’re going through. This can be helpful for both emotional and practical support.

Join a thinning hair group or forum. There are many groups and forums in the metaverse that can provide support and information about thinning hair.

Try different styles and looks. With so many options available in the virtual world, you can experiment with different styles and looks without having to worry about permanent changes.

SUMMARY

Hair loss professionals can benefit from the metaverse by giving patients a more immersive and realistic experience to help them make informed decisions about their treatment. The metaverse has the ability to create virtual consultations where clients can explore different options with the help of experts in a safe and realistic environment.

The Crown Act Advances

July 3 was National Crown Day

The Crown Act, a law that prohibits discrimination based on hairstyle and texture, just got one step closer to becoming a nationwide mandate.

On May 18, the United States House of Representatives voted 235-189 to pass the CROWN Act. The act had previously passed in the House in September of 2020 but failed to pass in the then-Republican-ruled Senate. Now, the act will land once again in the hands of the Senate, which is split down the middle between Republicans and Democrats.

In order for the Crown Act to become law across the country, at least 51 of the 100 Senate members must vote for it to pass — then, it gets handed off to the President, who has the final choice to veto or sign it into law. If it is passed by the Senate, natural hair discrimination could be deemed illegal nationwide.

“For far too long, Black women have been penalized for simply existing as themselves—that ends today,” Representative Ilhan Omar announced to Twitter. “This passage is long overdue, but an important step forward to combat racial discrimination.”

In July, Massachusetts signed the Crown Act into state law, making Massachusetts the 18th state to adopt the act. The state joins California, Colorado, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and more in banning discrimination based on hair textures and styles. State legislation is also currently pending in Alaska and is currently under review by the United States Senate.

The Crown Coalition, founded by Dove, National Urban League, Color of Change, and the Western Center on Law and Poverty has officially declared July 3 a national holiday to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Crown Act. National Crown Day will serve as a day to stand in solidarity with Black people and the right to wear their natural hair without fear of discrimination.

Solution for Alopecia Areata?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Olumiant (baricitinib) oral tablets to treat adult patients with severe alopecia areata, a disorder that often appears as patchy baldness and affects more than 300,000 people in the U.S. each year. Today’s action marks the first FDA approval of a systemic treatment (i.e., treats the entire body rather than a specific location) for alopecia areata.

“Access to safe and effective treatment op tions is crucial for the significant number of Americans affected by severe alopecia,” said Kendall Marcus, M.D., director of the Division of Dermatology and Dentistry in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Today’s approval will help fulfill a significant unmet need for patients with severe alopecia areata.”

Alopecia areata, commonly referred to as just alopecia, is an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles, causing hair to fall out, often in clumps. Olumiant is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor which blocks the activity of one or more of a specific family of enzymes, inter fering with the pathway that leads to inflammation.

The efficacy and safety of Olumiant in alopecia areata was studied in two ran domized, double-blind, placebo-con

trolled trials (Trial AA-1 and Trial AA-2) with patients who had at least 50% scalp hair loss as measured by the Severity of Alopecia Tool for more than six months. Patients in these trials received either a placebo, 2 milligrams of Olumiant, or 4 milligrams of Olumiant every day. The primary measurement of efficacy for both trials was the propor tion of patients who achieved at least 80% scalp hair coverage at week 36.

In Trial AA-1, 22% of the 184 patients who received 2 milligrams of Olumiant and 35% of the 281 patients who received 4 milligrams of Olumiant achieved adequate scalp hair coverage, compared to 5% of the 189 patients who received a placebo. In Trial AA-2, 17% of the 156 patients who received 2 milligrams of Olumiant and 32% of the 234 patients who received 4 milli grams of Olumiant achieved adequate scalp hair coverage, compared to 3% of the 156 patients who received a placebo.

FDA Approves Lilly and Incyte’s OLUMIANT® (baricitinib) As First and Only Systemic Medicine for Adults with Severe Alopecia Areata

The most common side effects associated with Olumiant include: upper respiratory tract infections, headache, acne, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), increase of an enzyme called creatinine phosphokinase, urinary tract infection, liver enzyme elevations, inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis), fatigue, lower respiratory tract infections, nausea, genital yeast infections (Candida infections), anemia, low number of certain types of white blood cells (neutropenia), abdominal pain, shingles (herpes zoster) and weight increase.

Olumiant is not recommended for use in combination with other JAK inhibitors, biologic immunomodulators, cyclosporine or other potent immunosuppressants. Olumiant comes with warnings and precautions including recommending close moni toring for the development of signs and symptoms of infection during and after treatment; evaluating patients for active tuber culosis infection and testing for latent tuberculosis prior to treatment with Olumiant; and the potential for viral reactivation. In addition, other warnings and precautions include hypersensitivity (allergic reactions), gastrointestinal perforations (tears in stomach or intestine), and laboratory abnormalities including low white and red blood cell counts, liver enzyme elevations and lipid elevations.

Olumiant comes with a boxed warning for serious infections, mortality, malignancy, major adverse cardiovascular events, and thrombosis.

Olumiant received priority review and breakthrough therapy designations for this indication.

Olumiant was originally approved in 2018. It is approved as a treatment for certain adult patients with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis. Olumiant is also approved for the treatment of COVID-19 in certain hospitalized adults.

The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. You May Be Protected Against Covid But What About Your Wi-Fi Network?

The average person now owns 22 devices that can connect to the internet, according to a recent Deloitte report. While these connected devices are designed to make your life easier, cybercriminals can also use them to breach your Wi-Fi network and steal valuable information, such as your bank details or client list.

Why You Need to Secure Your Wi-Fi Network

Every connected device in your business is like a window to your Wi-Fi network. But some connected devices don’t have the best security features built in, and they rarely receive security updates. So, your entire Wi-Fi network might be compromised by something as small as a smart plug.

According to the FBI’s latest Internet Crime Report, cybercriminals stole $6.9 billion from Americans in 2021 alone. Some of these cybercriminals are able to “crack” your passwords to access your email account, while others will steal your data to sell on the dark web or use it to extort you or your business.

Here’s how to secure your home Wi-Fi network and keep your data safe, so you can add as many connected devices as you want.

Change Your Router’s Default Password

All Wi-Fi routers come with preset passwords, but these are “easily available to obtain online” and “provide only marginal protection,” accord ing to the Cybersecurity and Infrastruc ture Security Agency. So, when you get a new router, the first thing you should do is change its password.

By default, most WiFi routers come with usernames like “admin” and passwords like “password” because they are meant to be temporary. If you don’t know your router’s default login credentials, you can find them by searching your manufacturer’s website.

Change Your Wi-Fi Network Password

One of the easiest ways to secure your Wi-Fi network is by changing your network’s name and password. You want to use a strong password for your Wi-Fi network that’s hard to guess or crack, so don’t use any personal information about you or your router’s model name.

For even more safety, you might also want to hide your Wi-Fi network name, so it doesn’t show up when strangers walk by your home. While this will not hide your network completely, hackers would need to know what your network is called before they can try to break in.

Use the Latest Wi-Fi Encryption

Wi-Fi encryption turns all your online communications into “cipher text,” or a random jumble of letters and numbers. Then your data can only be turned back into legible text by a device with the corresponding decryption key. This way, cybercriminals won’t be able to read your data, even if they

are able to intercept your communications.

There are four types of Wi-Fi encryption protocols: WEP, WPA, WPA2, and WPA3. The latest encryption protocol is WPA3, and it offers the best protection for all your connect ed devices, even if your smart home devices don’t have the best security features or you aren’t using the strongest pass words.

However, WPA3 is only available on the latest routers, and it is only compatible with newer devices. If you can’t choose WPA3, the next most secure encryption protocol is WPA2, followed by WPA, and then WEP.

Update Your Wi-Fi Router Firmware

Cybercriminals are always coming up with new ways to hack routers. To stay ahead of them, you can update your router’s firmware, which will include new security patches. Since firmware is basically like your router’s operating system, up dating it could also improve the performance of your Wi-Fi network.

You can also choose to automatically update your router’s firmware, but this might also reset some of your settings, depending on your router.

Create a Guest Wi-Fi Network

These days, giving people your Wi-Fi password is like giving them your house keys.

Even if you trust the person, cybercriminals could hack their devices to gain access to your Wi-Fi network.

So, to be safe, you should create a guest network to

stop anyone from accessing your personal data. Essentially, a guest network is like a totally separate Wi-Fi network. This way, you can make easy-to-remember pass words for your guests to access the internet, but you don’t have to worry about them accessing your real network with all your connected devices and personal information.

Disable Remote Access

Most routers allow you to configure your Wi-Fi settings from anywhere in the world, but this also makes it easier for cyber criminals to hack your router remotely.

By disabling remote access to your router, only devices that are directly connected to your network can make changes to your router configuration.

can simply turn them on to get most of the same benefits.

Disable WPS

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) lets you push a button on your router to connect to devices in your network instead of entering a password. While this makes it easier to connect to certain devices, like printers, it will make your Wi-Fi network less secure.

Turn on Your Router’s Firewall

Most routers come with built-in firewalls, which will protect your Wi-Fi network by detecting and blocking incoming traffic from unsolicited and malicious sources. Unlike the firewall on your computer, your router’s firewall can secure all the devices connected to your Wi-Fi network at once.

While this feature is enabled by default on a lot of routers, it has such an impact on your Wi-Fi network security that you should check to make sure it is not disabled.

Use a VPN to Hide Your Identity Online

A VPN (virtual private network) basically extends your pri vate Wi-Fi network over a public network, like the internet. More specifically, a VPN hides your IP address and encrypts your internet communications by directing your traffic through a remote server, so no one can see any data you send or receive online.

You can either use a free or paid VPN service by download ing an app or adding an extension to your web browser. However, many routers also come with VPNs built in, so you

Disable UPnP

Di UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is a service that allows devices on your Wi-Fi network to discover each other and automatically connect. However, cybercriminals can use this feature to

Upgrade Your Router

If your router is old, or you are still using the router provid ed by your ISP, you might want to consider upgrading to a newer model. When looking for a new router, make sure that it uses Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6, it has WPA3 encryption, and it has at least two Wi-Fi bands.

Treating Hair Loss From the Inside Out The Stress Menace

Celestine Gitau IAT

Stress levels have increased dramatically worldwide in recent years among both children and adults. Adults report experi encing signs of stress in more than 75% of cases. The most frequent pressures of life such as money, unemployment, family and social obligations, negative self-talk, perfection ism, or an unwillingness to embrace change can all contrib ute to stress at times. Coupled with emerging events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, unpredictable political and economic environments seem to weigh down on more than half of the world’s population. Younger generations are under more stress and worry than older generations are. Stress may not always be avoided, but there are techniques to lessen it. Stress has long been recognized as a contributing factor to hair loss. We have seen other kinds of hair loss, such as Li chen planus and frontal fibrosing being on the rise, partic ularly in young adults, in addition to telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. This makes stress a highly relevant subject of discussion to consider in any hair loss consultation.

Trichologists should work to address stress-related hair loss disorders at their source. Even though some of these stressors aren’t always preventable, trichologists nonetheless bear the responsibility of assisting patients in finding strategies for coping, adapting to the circumstance or even discussing ideas

for change in perspective. It’s crucial to address patient stress as best as possible if we want to stop hair loss and prevent it from recurring.

Trichologists and hair loss consultants should make it their prime goal to allocate sufficient time not only to diagnose and prescribe but to offer psychological support to patients losing hair from stress. For instance, discussing with patients how to avoid unhealthy thought patterns can increase their capacity to handle stressful circumstances, resulting in overall decreased stress. Discussions on upholding healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy social life, and maintaining a work-life balance, can help patients not only become more resilient but also cope with stress and should be part of every consultation process. Of course, a multidisciplinary approach especially for cases requiring specialized stress management strategies is always an option on the table that should be explored.

Good people; let us address the root cause of the disease and then prescribe. In the back of our minds, we should always ask ourselves; what has been happening in the life of my patient that could have contributed to this scalp autoimmune response? This is treating hair loss from the inside out.

The Most BeautyObsessed U.S. Cities

Best Cities for Hair:

Lake City,

StyleSeat

From nail art and facials to body care treatments and blow outs, booking a beauty service is a popular way for consumers to spend, support local businesses, and keep up with beauty trends. But some cities have more demand, and therefore more treatments available than others.

We conducted a study using Google business listings data to determine the most beauty-obsessed cities based on the number of beauty-related businesses — including niches like hair or nail salons and spas — as well as the consumer ratings of those businesses, in the 50 largest U.S. cities. Read on to discover what we found.

Ranked: the most beauty-obsessed cities

The top-three most beauty-obsessed U.S. cities are Portland, Oregon, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Austin, Texas, according to our ranking. This means these cities top the list of the most beauty businesses per resident that also maintain a high-quality standard.

In particular, Portland has some of the highest-rated hair and spa businesses in the country. Salt Lake City has a standout number of beauty treatment services per resident, such as nail salons, makeup artists, and tanning salons. Austin has very highly rated beauty treatments and spas, as well.

Let’s take a look at which cities stood out for each category.

The best cities for hair salons and services

Narrowing in on hair-related businesses, the categories include hair salons, hairdressers, and barber shops. Which cities are striking the golden combination of an abundance of hair services that are also top-notch? Portland tops this list as well, fol lowed by Buffalo, New York, and Richmond, Virginia.

Hair Authority Summer/Fall 2022 27

While Portland has significantly fewer hair businesses per resident than other cities on the list, the Portland businesses are clearly highly regarded by their customers. Portland hair services have the highest average customer ratings in the country. The runner-up city, Buffalo, has the highest concentration of hair businesses per resident in the United States but a lower average star rating.

The most beauty-treatment-obsessed cities

Next, we looked at cities with the most (and highest-rated) businesses focused on beauty treatments. This category includes makeup artists, nail salons, tanning salons, skincare clinics, and even teeth-whitening services.

When it comes to beauty treatments, Austin and Salt Lake City top the list, with San Diego, California coming in third place.

28 Hair Authority Summer/Fall 2022

Of the top three cities, Salt Lake City has the highest number of beauty treatment businesses per resident, but Austin has the highest-rated services out of all 50 cities analyzed. San Diego strikes a solid balance of ample beauty treatment businesses that maintain solid consumer reviews.

The best cities for spa lovers

We also analyzed spa-related businesses on a local level to determine the best cities for lovers of spa treatments. These businesses included massage parlors, medical spas, and laser hair removal services, to name a few. The best cities for spa lovers include previous winners, such as Buffalo and Salt Lake City in first and third place, respectively, but also include a new top contender: Raleigh, North Carolina. Buffalo maintains the most spa-related businesses per resident across all cities, with Raleigh close behind. Still, Salt Lake City’s spa treatments are particularly high-rated out of the top three cities.

Introducing Curly Hair Specialist, Brenda Taveras

Personally, I have curly hair, and I wish other people knew that curls do not have to be hard to maintain. Establishing a hair care routine and finding your favorite products that suit your curl type, and regular haircuts between 4-6 months are the key to maintaining healthy looking curls. I love it when people embrace their natural hair.

Do people with curly hair have less or more styling choices than people with straight hair?

I wouldn’t say less or more necessarily. Curly hair is awesome because you can do many different styles to your liking. It’s all about being creative and trying out different styles.

What advice would you give to a young person with curly hair, so it remains healthy and thick?

As the largest distributor of salon professional products, Cos mo Prof is dedicated to growing and diversifying the beauty industry. The retailer’s commitment to education is what sets them apart, and they continue to double down on their ef forts to bring stylists quality products as well as educational tools to bolster confidence in their technique.

Cosmo Prof takes another stride in education has announced their expanded 2022 Artistic Team who will serve as a professional community of beauty ambassadors for the brand, helping fellow beauty professionals expand their knowledge. The team features creative colorists, curl specialists and business-focused stylists, who will take part in educational shows and special events, as well as teach classes catered to stylist needs.

Brenda Taveras is a curly hair specialist with the desire to help clients embrace and love their curls and coils. Hair Authority contacted Brenda and invited her to share her thoughts about caring for natural hair.

Do you need to have curly hair yourself to truly un derstand the challenges and care of curly hair?

No, but having hands-on experience to understand the way curly hair reacts to certain products and cutting techniques helps immensely. It’s also helpful to learn how to work with different curl patterns.

What are the things that people with curly hair wish others knew?

My number one piece of advice is to keep up with your curly cuts and moisturize your curls weekly. I like to call this the start of a healthy curly routine. For example, learning how to properly moisturize your hair for your curl type and finding a trusted curly stylist to see 4-6 months to maintain your cuts will leave your curls looking healthy & thick.

How can you avoid traction alopecia if you tightly braid your hair?

I would recommend changing hair styles often if you’re con stantly getting braids. This allows your hair to take a break from braiding. If you continue with braids, try a looser braid style from time to time.

What are the most important Do’s and Don’ts about caring for curly hair?

The most important thing you can do is use a hair mask once a week to keep your curls moisturized, and make sure to use lots of water when styling. Most importantly, do not wash your curls every day, because shampooing everyday may dry out your curls.

Is it safe to keep straightening your curly hair? What is the best way to do this?

It is safe to straighten your curls occasionally. Doing so often can cause heat damage. Also, make sure to also use a heat protection spray!

A New Member of Cosmo Prof’s 2022 Artistic Team

Does the weight of hair extensions damage the hair to which they are attached?

Yes, it can add stress and tension to your hair. But there are many different techniques when it comes to applying hair extensions. Some options do not damage the hair. I always recommend researching which technique will work best for your hair type.

What are some of the most dramatic styles you have seen among people with curly hair?

I love seeing pops of color and curly mohawks!

What are the most popular hairstyles today for people with curly hair?

One of the most popular styles I see today is shag/curly bangs. It’s one of my favorite hairstyles to do on my clients.

SLOW DOWN!

How Fast Stretching Can Affect the Strength of Hair

Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. Keratin is also found in nails and in the outer layer of skin. The cells that produce keratin are constantly dividing and growing, which is why hair can grow quite long.

Keratin is a very strong protein, which is why hair is so resis tant to breaking. In fact, hair is stronger than many types of steel. Each individual hair is made up of many parallel fibers structured so they distribute weight evenly which means that each individual fiber doesn’t have to resist too much tension on its own. In fact, a healthy hair can be stretched up to one and a half times its initial length before breaking.

The average person has about 100,000 hairs on their head, and each individual hair can sup port up to 100 grams of weight. That means that the average person’s hair can support 10 tons of weight!

In a recent study, researchers at the University of California San Diego* explored at the nanoscale level how a strand of human hair behaves when it is stretched or deformed. They found that hair behaves in a different way depending on how slow or fast it is stretched.

The faster hair gets stretched, the stronger it becomes. This is due to the way that keratin, the protein that makes up hair, is structured. Keratin is made up of long chains of amino acids. The cortex fibrils are composed of thousands of spiral-shaped chains of molecules termed alpha helix chains that are coiled up in their relaxed state, but when hair is stretched, the coils

start to uncoil and straighten out.

The more the hair is stretched, the more the chains uncoil. At slow stretching speeds, the chains have time to realign them selves and form new bonds with other chains. This makes the hair stronger. But at high stretching speeds, the chains don’t have time to realign and form new bonds, which makes the hair weaker.

So, if you want to protect your hair, avoid excessive brush ing or combing, which can break the bonds between chains. Next time you need to brush or comb your hair, go slow!

“Analyzing the Surface Topography of Human Hair Using WITec’s AFM Instrument Meyers.” Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UC San Diego Jacob School of Engineering, recently published a study online in the Materials Science and Engineering C journal outlining at the nanoscale level how a piece of human hair behaves when it is stretched, or deformed.
