Micropigmentation or Microblading??

Fine hair-like strokes are the hallmark of hairline microblading, a semi-permanent cosmetic technique used to fill in thinning spots or bald patches. Using a special tool, skilled professionals apply dye to the skin in precise, feather-light movements to create a natural-looking fullness. The process is less invasive than standard tattooing, as the needle used during microblading only penetrates the top layer of skin. While the effects are not permanent, the results generally last up to a year.

Company Fined for Misleading Hair Loss Claims

Ashley & Martin, a prominent hair loss treatment provider in Australia, has come under scrutiny from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) for advertising their ability to treat and cure hair loss. Despite touting a 98% success rate, based on a customer satisfaction survey of 109 customers from 2007 and clinical trial results of 10 customers from 1999, the ACCC ruled that the company had no reasonable basis for its claims. As a result, Ashley & Martin has agreed to pay a significant fine to the ACCC.

Diabetes Increases Risk of Hair Loss

Recent studies suggest that diabetes can cause hair loss due to its effect on the blood vessels that feed the scalp. A study of 1,039 participants with type 2 diabetes and 6,323 non-diabetic participants found that those with diabetes were two times more likely to suffer from alopecia (hair loss). Additionally, a review of studies involving nearly 20,000 people found that those with diabetes were twice as likely to suffer from alopecia when compared to those without the condition. Diabetes can cause hair loss due to its effect on the hormones in our bodies. A study of 33 participants found that those with insulin resistance had higher levels of testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which are known to cause hair loss.

Understanding the Growing Power of Hair Wellness Fuels Hair Loss Awareness

The wellness industry has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Physical fitness, healthy eating habits, and hair care are all important factors in maintaining a well-rounded lifestyle. In fact, according to a report from Global Market Insights, the hair loss sector alone is expected to exceed $7 billion by 2026! This impressive figure can be attributed to an increasing awareness and acceptance of hair loss issues, as well as rising concern about physical appearance amongst people of all ages. Due to an increasing demand for hair loss treatments, the hair restoration industry is expected to experience a compound annual growth rate of 8.1% from 2019 to 2026. People are more mindful than ever about their hair health and are looking for ways to maintain or restore hair fullness.

Increasing Demand for Hair Loss Professionals

This has opened a number of opportunities for hair loss professionals. Statistics show that more than 80 million people in the US are affected by hair loss and this number is projected to grow to over 100 million by 2050. Regardless of whether hair loss is caused by genetics or lifestyle factors, modern hair restoration options offer a wide range of solutions that can help people achieve the look they want. From hair transplants to hair thickening treatments and other hair restoration products, there’s something for everyone who wants to combat hair loss. This is important news for hair loss professionals looking to build their careers in this field. With the right knowledge and expertise, they

have the potential to make a real impact in people’s lives.

More R&D

Research and development in hair loss solutions is also increasing. For example, a report from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) shows that hair restoration expenditures have grown significantly over the last decade due to an increase in hair transplant procedures, hair loss medications, and hair restoration products. According to the same report, hair care industry investments reached $4.8 billion in 2019, making hair loss solutions one of the most successful areas for hair care product development and investment.

Only One Chance at A Good First Impression

Studies show that it only takes a few seconds for someone to form an opinion about you. And according to research from the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, hair plays a major role in making a good first impression. It found that those with groomed hair were perceived as being more attractive, successful, and authoritative than those with unkempt hair. Hair Plays an Important Role in Success and Authority

People with more hair tend to be more successful in the business world. Research published in The Harvard Business Review revealed that hair volume plays an important role in how people perceive success and authority at work. The study found that men with a full head of hair were perceived as being three times more likely to get hired than those with less hair.

Furthermore, the study showed that men with more hair were perceived to be 13% more successful than their balding counterparts. Additionally, a separate study from the International Journal of Dermatology found that hair loss was linked to lower self-esteem and confidence in both men and women. This can have an impact on how people are viewed in the workplace, as well as how successful they become. It is clear that hair plays an important role in people’s overall career success.

Conclusion

Hair loss professionals, with expertise in hair management are likely to see a steady increase in demand for their services. With new technologies and procedures being explored as never before, plus better-informed consumers, the future has never looked brighter for all professionals and the clients they serve.

3 CAUSES OF THINNING LOCS

Trichologist Celestine Gitau

Have you noticed your locs becoming strikingly less anchored? Wonder why suddenly your loctician has to join two or three locs together to form the once single voluminous loc? Or the once neat straight partings between your locs are growing wider with every styling? Well; that could be due to thinning. However contrary to popular belief, having locs be it sisterlocs, traditional locs, freeform locs or whichever type does not cause hair thinning. Whether you’re contemplating about loc’ing your hair or fascinated about them, let us dive into three of the many culprits that could be causing this locs menace.

01 Hair Breakage

Most people who wear locs experience hair breakage and fragility at some point during their locs journey. Breakage is more common in African or Black hair, which studies depict to have higher fragility compared to other ethnicities. Despite the fact that hair breakage can be caused by a variety of factors the styling associated with locks plays a key role.

Imagine attempting to pull off that polished new locks color that exudes nothing less than confidence and gusto only to be doomed to weeks of hair breakage culminating in thin locks! We don’t have to envision it because locs lovers have probably experienced it. Over-processing one’s hair during coloring increases the risk of breakage exponentially. Harsh chemicals can break down the hair’s bonds, making it weaker and hence more prone to breakage. This breakage eventually manifests

as thinning locks on a particular part or on the entire scalp. Ensure that locs colouring is done by a professional who assesses the hair and uses the best practices to achieve your desired color.

Dry, brittle hair is as well a leading cause of hair breakage. It can be caused by a number of factors such as lack of sufficient moisturizing and conditioning. Hair breakage leading to thinning locs can be aggravating especially if the locks end up too thin and eventually fall off. The good news is that hair breakage can be addressed by modifying one’s styling practices and hair maintenance routine - Avoid tight stylings and maintain proper hair moisturizing and conditioning routine. In the fight against hair breakage, the hair products you use are crucial.

Hair breakage is usually only temporary, and it is possible to repair and strengthen one’s locs. If you’re still experiencing hair breakage or thinning locs after making these modifications, it’s essential to consult a hair and scalp professional to rule out any underlying issues.

02

EXCESSIVE PULLING-TENSION

While neatly done locs styling can be a great deal of fun not to mention the ferocious upstanding aura that oozes from having an amazing hairstyle, tightly styled locs can generate stress and tension on your hair fibers. Traction alopecia results from this strenuous styling and may lead to thin locs, especially along the hairline. Twisting your locs tightly, bundling them up high, and pulling your hair back into tight ponytails are all common causes.

03 GENETIC HAIR LOSS

Excessive tension while styling eventually leads to breakage which manifests as thinning especially at the root of your locs. The excessive tension could also lead to loss of hair follicles- lost hair follicles in a particular area of the scalp result in reduced hair density making the locks appear thinner.

It is not unusual to notice locs thinning gradually over time only at the top of the scalp. The thinning at the top of the scalp, around the temples or even a recession of the front hairline could be due to Androgenetic alopecia(AGA).AGA is a type of hair loss that is genetically predetermined. It is caused by an excess response of androgens (male hormones) on the hair follicles at the top of the head(vertex area). It affects up to 50% of both men and women and can manifest any time after puberty.

In androgenetic alopecia also referred to as Female pattern hair loss in women and Male pattern baldness in men, the hair follicles at the vertex undergo miniaturization resulting in thinner or even shorter hair. Eventually balding may manifest. The thinning hair at the vertex area causes the locs to appear thinner or even break off over time. Continuous tight twisting of locs may worsen the situation as some of the hair at the vertex may be lost to breakage or traction.

Have these symptoms? Don’t fret, seek professional help from your trichologist as AGA can be successfully managed. The earlier you seek help, the faster you flaunt that locs style back

Locs are among the most paradigmatic hairstyles of all time. They’re a lovely and adaptable way to wear your natural tresses. Whether you just installed yours, thinking about having them or wondering if you should; happy healthy locs!

The Skin of Color Society

Skin of color patients comprise the majority in California, New Mexico, and Texas…and soon will be the majority in Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, New York, and Florida. By 2042, more than 50% of the US population will have skin of color.

Analysis of the population of the United States reveals that there will be a dramatic shift in the country’s demographics in the 21st century. The United States is rapidly becoming a country in which the majority of citizens have pigmented skin, which is also referred to as skin of color. People with skin of color are of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and include African Americans, Asians, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Indians and Pacific Islanders primarily, as well as individuals from these groups who have intermarried.

These changes in national and regional demographics, as well as international population shifts, underscore the need for and importance of a thorough understanding of skin of color. The dermatology community may be faced with cutaneous diseases that occur more often in people with pigmented skin, present differently, inadequately understood, or are unique to this population. An increase in the body of dermatological literature concerning skin of color as well as the advancement of both basic science and clinical investigational research is necessary to meet the needs of the expanding skin of color population.

African American, Latino, Asian, Native Indian and Pacific Islander communities often have an inadequate understanding of the root causes of skin diseases that commonly affect them. Furthermore, they often face numerous challenges in their attempts to find information about these diseases. Many individuals of color adhere to misconceptions about the causes and potential cures for these diseases, and spend considerable financial resources on ineffectual non-prescription, folk, or home therapies.

The Skin of Color Society was established in 2004 by Susan C. Taylor, M.D. Its purpose is to promote awareness of, and excellence within, skin of color dermatology. The Society is committed to the education of health care providers and the general public on dermatologic health issues related to skin of color. The Society supports research and other activities that impact individuals with skin of color. Partnerships with dermatologists from the national and international communities, professional medical organizations, and community, corporate and industry groups will ensure our success in serving all individuals with skin of color. We invite you to join us in this important endeavor.

LIFE SPAN OF A HAIR SYSTEM

Why only an approximate time?

Because it’s just like buying new shoes, everything depends depend on use.

When you ask how long your hair system might last, it is not easy to give you a concrete answer because we can only make a best guess based on past experience with other similar clients and what we know about you and your lifestyle.

Firstly, your lack of experience may shorten the product’s lifespan. When you get your first hair system, it takes a little while to learn how to care for it. This includes how to style, brush, and wash your hair and what products to use. Your stylist or consultant can help you here, sharing their own expertise and the experiences of other clients.

We recommend that you carry out some basic maintenance on your hair system about every 7- 10 days. This is crucial because some adhesives and bonds can clog the hair if you leave them on too long and require a solvent to remove them.

Since solvents are abrasive products, we would prefer that you use them only in an emergency.

If you are disciplined and conscientious about your hair care regimen, it’s going to last much longer.

Now, let’s return the example of the new shoes. If you play

lots of sport, go to the beach or go mountain climbing, your shoes won’t last as long as they would if you only walked on pavement. The same is true for your hair system; it all depends on your lifestyle. If you play a lot of active sports, go to the pool or the beach, then your system won’t last as long.

Here’s a brief description of the estimated lifespan of a typical hair system:

Swiss lace: This is the finest and most undetectable base material. Being so fine, it’s also the most delicate. Estimated lifespan: 2 – 3 months

French lace: It’s a tiny bit thicker than Swiss lace, but you can barely tell the difference. However, its durability is a slightly greater than Swiss. Estimated lifespan: 3 – 4 months.

Mono: If your priority is a longer lifespan and comfort, we recommend a mono base. Because the base material is less delicate, attachment, removal and maintenance is simpler. Estimated lifespan: 6 – 12 months.

Why Up to 30% of Severe COVID-19 Cases May Suffer Temporary Hair Loss and How to Care for Your Hair During and After Infection.

An Often-Overlooked Symptom Of COVID

Hair loss is an often-overlooked symptom of COVID-19. While not life-threatening, it can be a source of distress for people who have experienced severe cases of the virus. The cause of hair loss is not yet fully understood, but it appears to be related to the body’s inflammatory response to the virus.

When hair follicles are exposed to inflammation, they become weakened, and hair starts to fall out more easily. It is also possible that the virus itself could directly attack hair follicles, leading to hair loss. In addition, hair loss can be a side effect of medications used to treat COVID-19, such as corticosteroids.

Up to 30% of Severe Cases May Suffer Temporary Hair Loss

Studies show that up to 30% of those with severe cases of COVID-19 may suffer temporary hair loss. However, it’s important to note that this type of hair loss is often temporary and may be also caused by the strain and stress experienced during a long battle with COVID-19.

Taking Care of Your Hair During and After a Covid-19 Infection

In most cases, simple lifestyle changes such as increased nutrition, hydration, and stress management, can help hair regrow in a healthy way. Additionally, certain medications

10 Hair Authority Fall 2022

may be prescribed to help stimulate follicle growth.

Women who are experiencing hair loss due to COVID-19 may find it difficult to style their hair in ways that make them feel confident and beautiful. Fortunately, there are several hairstyles that can help women enhance the look of thinning hair and feel better about themselves.

One popular hair styling option for those suffering from hair loss due to COVID-19 is a pixie cut. A pixie cut is a short hair style that typically features bangs and layers cut close to the head. This style is ideal for hair loss caused by COVID-19 because it can help conceal thinning hair while still providing a stylish look.

For hair loss that is confined to specific areas, an undercut may be the perfect hair style solution. An undercut involves shaving or trimming hair short on one side of the head and leaving hair long on the other side. This style can help draw attention away from thinning hair while still providing a dramatic hair style that is sure to turn heads.

Whether you choose a pixie cut, an undercut, hair extensions, or another hair style, hair loss due to COVID-19 does not have to limit your hair styling options. With a little creativity and the right hair care products, you can find hair styles that work with your thinning hair and help you look and feel beautiful.

If hair loss persists after recovering from COVID-19, it is best to consult with a hair care specialist to determine the underlying cause.

Why Covid Causes Hair Loss

When suffering from COVID-19, the body focuses primarily on healing and rebuilding its defenses. During this process, many bodily systems slow down or even stop functioning in order to conserve energy and redirect it towards fighting off virus particles.

This also applies to the hair follicles, which enter a “resting phase” in order to preserve energy for the rest of the body. This “resting phase” typically lasts about three months and is a normal part of the recovery process.

Covid Hair Loss Is Temporary

The good news is that hair loss resulting from COVID-19 is usually temporary. In most cases, hair will grow back within six to twelve months, although it may take longer for hair to regain its strength. It’s important to remember that hair loss related to COVID-19 does not occur in all cases, and is more likely to occur only when a person experiences severe cases of the virus.

ALOPECIA DRUG DESIGNED TO GO DEEPER

First Patient enrolled in Phase 1b Alopecia Areata Study Evaluating ARQ-255

• ARQ-255 is a topical janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor therapy specifically designed as a potential treatment for alopecia areata

• Proprietary Deep Dermal Drug Delivery (4D) formulation designed to deliver drug deep into the skin to the base of the hair follicle where key alopecia areata inflammation occurs

Arcutis Biotherapeutics, Inc., an early commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing meaningful innovations in immuno-dermatology, has announced that the first subject has been enrolled in a Phase 1b study evaluating ARQ-255, a topical suspension of ivarmactinib, a potent and specific janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor, for the treatment of alopecia areata.

ARQ-255 has been specifically formulated with Arcutis’ proprietary 4D technology to deliver the drug deep into the skin to the base of the hair follicle, the site of the inflammation that underlies alopecia areata.

“Alopecia areata is an immune condition that not only causes hair loss, but also causes significant negative impact on an individual’s emotional and mental wellbeing. Today, there are no FDA-approved topical therapies to treat the condition,” said Frank Watanabe, President and CEO at Arcutis. “We are delighted to take this first step in the clinical development of ARQ-255, which leverages our unique 4D technology to deliver drug to the site of inflammation deep in the hair follicle.”

The phase 1b, vehicle-controlled, double-blind, multicenter study will evaluate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of treatment with ARQ-255 topical suspension 3% or vehicle in healthy adult volunteers and individuals with patchy alopecia areata.

About ARQ-255

ARQ-255, or topical invarmactiniib suspension, is a topical janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor therapy for alopecia areata. Topical treatment of alopecia areata is challenging due to the depth of inflammation and the dense vasculature that surrounds the hair bulb. ARQ-255 has been uniquely formulated to deliver drug deeper into the skin than conventional topical formulations, to reach the site of inflammation in alopecia areata.

About Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that affects about 1 in 500 adults and occurs in individuals of all ages, sexes, and ethnic groups. In alopecia areata, the immune system attacks the body’s own hair follicles—leading to the development of patches of hair loss (alopecia) on the scalp, face, and other areas of the body. Typically, these bald patches appear suddenly and in some patients can progress to involve the entire body. Recurrence is common and many patients will experience several episodes during their lifetime.

About Arcutis

Arcutis Biotherapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARQT) is a medical dermatology company that seeks meaningful innovation to address the needs of individuals living with immune-mediated dermatological diseases and conditions. Arcutis’ dermatology development platform includes clinical programs for a range of inflammatory dermatological conditions including scalp psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis.

The Latest Minoxidil Developments in What You Need

to Know

Background

Minoxidil is a topical solution that has been used to treat hair loss since the 1980s. It was developed by Upjohn (now part of Pfizer) and approved by the FDA in 1988 as a treatment for male pattern baldness.

Minoxidil works by dilating blood vessels, increasing the delivery of oxygen, nutrients and other essential substances to the hair follicles to promote healthy hair growth.

The Minoxidil market is growing and is estimated to

be worth around US$8.2 billion by 2027, according to a recent report by Grand View Research. This growth can be attributed to increasing awareness of Minoxidil’s effectiveness in treating hair loss, as well as the growing prevalence of baldness worldwide. Additionally, Minoxidil has become more available and accessible to consumers as it is available over the counter in most countries. Furthermore, technological advancements have also led to the development of novel Minoxidil formulations and delivery methods that can maximize efficacy for various types of hair loss. Overall, Minoxidil has proven to be a reliable solution for treating hair loss and is likely to remain an important part of the hair care industry for years to come.

14 Hair Authority Fall 2022

When Did Minoxidil Lose Patent Protection?

Minoxidil lost its patent protection in 1996 and is now available as a generic drug. In recent years, Minoxidil has been formulated into pills and capsules, which offer an easier and more convenient way to take Minoxidil for hair loss treatment. These Minoxidil pills are just as effective as topical Minoxidil and offer an improved absorption rate and potency.

Most Minoxidil pills also contain additional ingredients such as zinc, biotin, and saw palmetto, which further enhance Minoxidil’s effectiveness in treating hair loss. Minoxidil pills have become an increasingly popular form of Minoxidil treatment as they are generally easier to take than Minoxidil foam or liquid and can be swallowed without any mess or hassle.

Forms of Minoxidil

Topical Minoxidil is available in various forms including foam, solution and cream. Studies have shown Minoxidil to be a safe and effective treatment for hair loss, with results lasting between three to six months after discontinuation of use. Unlike Minoxidil in liquid or cream form, Minoxidil foam has been found to be more cosmetically pleasing and easier to apply to large areas of the scalp. It is applied directly to the scalp and typically used once or twice daily.

Minoxidil comes in several different strengths, including 2%, 5%, and 10%. The most common strength is the 2% Minoxidil solution, which is recommended for general use. For those with more severe hair loss, a 5% Minoxidil solution is available.

Minoxidil Cocktails

In recent years, Minoxidil has been added to many other hair loss products to enhance their effectiveness. By combining Minoxidil with other active ingredients such as azelaic acid and finasteride, these “cocktail” products can promote healthy hair growth while also reducing inflammation and scalp irritation.

Other developments have included Minoxidil combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and laser therapy to provide more effective results.

Risks and Side Effects of Minoxidil

As with any treatment, Minoxidil does carry some risks of side effects. The most common side effect is irritation of the skin and scalp due to contact with Minoxidil. Other side effects that have been reported include itching, redness, dryness, scalp flaking and burning of the scalp or face. Some people may also experience an increase in facial hair growth due to Minoxidil use. Despite these possible side effects, Minoxidil is generally considered a safe and effective treatment.

The Future of Minoxidil

ViaDerma, Inc. plans to launch a new hair regrowth product using Minoxidil early next year. The product is expected to be available via prescription. The company will incorporate their proprietary, patent-pending dual carrier transdermal delivery technology with Minoxidil to create their new product. ViaDerma’s transdermal delivery system facilitates the transfer of chemicals through the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, with a diffusion constant that is 10,000x higher than other products on the market. This allows much more of the active ingredient to be absorbed into the skin and work better and faster, often producing significantly better results than traditional topical treatments. Previous testing conducted by ViaDerma has already yielded positive results.

TricoMaxTM, Beyond CBD

How Science and Nature Combine to Create Visibly Stronger, Thicker Hair

The following article is taken from a presentation given by Eileen McKenna, WTA at the Holistic Practitioners of Trichology Conference in November 2022.

Good afternoon. My name is Eileen McKenna, I’m a trichologist from New Jersey, and I am going to be discussing the technology behind a new hair loss product called TricoMaTM. Before we begin, I would like to take a moment together to pause and recognize with gratitude that we’re able to be here today. Just a simple break from this wonderful networking and learning we’re doing to connect with our inner selves in the spirit of Thanks which has been prevalent this past week. In remembrance of the Thanksgiving holiday, I would also like to give thanks to the indigenous people of Charleston, many of whom are all still present in South Carolina, as are many descendants of the Cherokee nation.

As I said, I am a trichologist from New Jersey, and have my own active practice with hair loss clients which I founded in 2015. But my journey into the field of trichology started much earlier than that. In the early two-thousands, I was prescribed a heavy medication which caused my hair to start shedding. I was given no answers as to how to stop the shedding or how to get my hair back (and found myself frustrated at the lack of support/information available?).

A while later, before I founded my own practice, I was working for Hair Club as a stylist applying hairpieces and found myself confused as to why we were just putting a band-aid over a client’s hair loss instead of answering the biggest question: *why* the clients are losing their hair in the first place. By the time I started actively studying trichology to try to learn more about the science behind that question, my first daughter was born and I was fully experiencing post-partum shedding. I enrolled in a trichology program with IAT and learned more about the body from a holistic sense, how the various systems interact with each other, and why it can get out of balance. I began to integrate energy work into my life and my practice with tremendous results. I had my second

daughter, and the post-partum shedding was worse than the first time around. I had a surgery, suffered telogen effluvium. Got Covid – shed my hair again.

I tell you all of this to reinforce that I am acutely familiar with both the perspectives of a client and a practitioner. Because of this, I choose the products I work with very carefully. I personally use and recommend to family and friends each product that I sell. If there’s a supplement that can help combat hair loss or the effects of aging, I’ve probably tried it. Today’s presentation is entitled “TricoMax, Beyond CBD: How Science and Nature Combine to Create Visibly Stronger, Thicker Hair.” I have used this product, I have sold this product to clients, I’ve introduced it to my husband and friends. I believe in the efficacy of TricoMax, and I think after this weekend, you will too.

What is the true cost of beauty?

It was interesting to me as I began this presentation to weigh the actual cost of beauty. It takes our time, our energy, our effort, and our money to look our best. We spend so many hours in and so many dollars at a salon, and yet the average woman is still dissatisfied with her hair. Worse still is that in communities of color, women of African descent are suffering scalp disorders at alarming rates and acquiring scarring

16 Hair Authority Fall 2022

alopecia that doctors often deem “self-induced”. Most if not all women who suffer hair loss are significantly impacted by it psychologically. So many women who suffer hair loss are looking for organic, natural alternatives to harsh chemicals. We were often taught by media, culture, and sometimes even our caregivers that pain is beauty, and we continue to follow this mantra today. There is maintenance with being a woman that doesn’t necessarily equal the grooming schedules and practices of men. But even this doesn’t mean that beauty is supposed to evoke pain. I was heartbroken to learn from a recent study that 39% of women take a pain reliever such as Tylenol when getting a beauty service like extensions or braids. Even a tight blowout can cause short- and medium-term scalp tenderness; I’m sure we all know too well the sting of being burned by a hot tool or chemical.

Women are from Venus; Men are from Mars.

Women will often talk to others about their hair loss, but men are far less likely to seek out solutions in the same way. In a study of about 1500 men, 70% reported hair to be important to their image, and 42% feared becoming bald. Out of the 47% of those 1500 men that had reported experiencing hair loss, 38% reported reduced self-confidence because of their hair loss; but LESS than 10% were currently pursuing treatment, and 75% had never pursued any treatment for their hair loss.

The men who DID pursue treatment and reported success also reported improved self-esteem and perception of attractiveness.

So, what does all this mean in the real world?

Women and men are not generally satisfied with their hair, they are psychologically impacted by their hair loss, are not finding solutions in doctor’s offices, and are asking for alternatives to chemical or hormonal treatments currently on the market, and if provided with a solution that worked, would experience a positive psychological impact as a result.

Men are also extremely distressed at losing their hair. A breakdown of spending patterns estimates some men spend upwards of $175,000 in their lifetime on their appearance. Men generally spend more on gym memberships, supplements, and nutrition than women. They are looking to keep their “peak performance” in form for the long term. For men, vitality is often equated to virility, and a man with long or thick hair is inherently seen as more masculine. Have you noticed that since the advent of television, we have never had a bald president. A study done in the 1990s showed that we, as Americans, view men with less hair as having less money, being less trustworthy, and being generally less attractive.

Enter these two gentlemen – Chris Webb and Amin Sheybani. Friends and colleagues for more than twenty-five years, these men are the voices behind The International Hair Authority. This website has been praised as “the trusted voice of hair loss science” by its users. Chris Webb painstakingly keeps news articles, research, and other up-to-date information on this website to supply men and women with the most comprehensive, objective, and trustworthy information about hair loss. up with Dr. Gregory Smith, the man who would ultimately create a naturally-derived alternative to Minoxidil and Finasteride.

Dr. Gregory Smith is one of the first doctors to research cannabis as a medicine.

Dr. Smith acquired a Masters from Harvard University, is ranked as a major in the US Army, and served his residency at Walter Reed. In his research, he was able to single out individual cannabinoids and their specific ability to heal a variety of maladies, one of which included hair loss. By singling out the CBDV THCV cannabinoids, he created the building blocks for his patented Alpha-Varin Complex™. The main properties of the Alpha-Varin complex were anti-inflammatory in nature, and inflammation has been proved to be a common cause of hair loss, but additional clinical research was required to prove effective.

Again, Mr. Webb and Mr. Sheybani went to their rolodex and identified Mr. John Satino. John was a research principal for both FDA-approved hair loss drugs. Knowing he had a significant and well-respected history of hair-loss drug trials under his belt, Mr. Webb and Mr. Sheybani felt he would be the best suited to test TricoMax in a clinical setting. In the course of his previous studies, Mr. Satino had tested Minoxidil, Finasteride, and Low-Level Laser Therapy. While his clinical testing proved the efficacy of each of these treatments, they each came with their own limitations as well. With minoxidil, he cited improved vasodilation and circulation on the scalp, but results took upwards of four months to show. Additionally, minoxidil is hormone-impacting, often causing excess facial hair to grow. It generally does not improve temporal thinning, instead showing most improvement in the vertex area of the scalp.

to appear and are often slow or gradual. Once the medication is no longer taken, any hair loss gains will steadily diminish back to previous rates of loss. As with many medications, there are side effects, many of which are physical in nature as Finasteride impacts hormone levels: bloating, swelling of the lips and face, breast enlargement and tenderness, decreased sex drive, trouble getting or keeping an erection, ejaculation disorder, and depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation.

Low-level laser therapy was another hair loss therapy tested by Mr. Satino. It shows promise as a new option for cellular healing. Red light often works in as few as 16 weeks by improving mitosis of those cells of the scalp nearest the hair bulb. It reduces inflammation, accelerates cellular growth and tissue repair, and enhances vascular activity. However, it works for some people but not all. Generally, the overall efficacy is moderately effective for 51% of users, but significantly effective for only 27% of users. Low level laser therapy helps, but not a cure-all. It is a treatment that needs consistent use to be most effective. It can be time consuming, and cessation of treatment will lead to gradual loss of any gains.

Given the shortcomings identified by Mr. Satino on the other treatments, when his results on TricoMax came back, it was stunning. Dr Smith commented: “From my recent clinical study to be published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Trichology: ALPHA VARIN™ Complex has superior results to Finasteride and 5% Minoxidil once daily foam. 100% of patients saw hair growth in just 12 weeks.” Mr. Satino even saw growth in patients of advanced age. One 83-year-old participant partnered TricoMax with low-level laser therapy and an anti-bacterial shampoo, and her hair density improved enough that she began coloring her hair again.

Introducing Alpha-Varin complexTM

What ingredients in the TricoMax serum make it superior to other products like Minoxidil and Finasteride? Simple. It’s the newly discovered Alpha Varin complex, an active ingredient that is a naturally derived CBDV and THCV complex. It has been clinically proven to grow hair in as little as 90 days with daily use.

Alpha-Varin complexTM works in 3 ways.

1. Blocking human CB1 receptors in the hair shaft. This results in the stimulation of keratinocytes in the hair shaft, making the hair longer.

2. Stimulating the matrix cells in the hair shaft, making the hair thicker in diameter.

Finasteride is an oral medication, originally used as a blood pressure medication. It is a 5-Alpha-reductase inhibitor, and in clinical testing was discovered to have a side effect of causing hair growth. However, results can take 3-12 months

3. Stimulating the TRPV1 receptor which lengthens the amount of time a hair is in telogen state.

To say it simply, Alpha-Varin complex can give us longer, thicker hair that stays rooted on the scalp for additional time.

20 Hair Authority Fall 2022

There are other carefully selected ingredients in TricoMax.

Saw Palmetto. Saw Palmetto is an herb long toted in trichology as being helpful in hair loss by inhibiting the activity of 5-alpha-reductase. It is one of the most common herbal remedies used to slow down hair loss or regrow hair. The extract of the Saw Palmetto tree’s berry has been used by Native Americans as medicine for hundreds of years. A study showed positive results for men treated with topical Saw Palmetto, increasing hair count by 11.9% over four months. It can also be taken orally, but there has been evidence of interactions with other medications, so topical application is generally recommended as a result.

Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, is a natural antiseptic. It is produced by the natural fermentation of sugars. In many countries, it’s sold as commonly as isopropyl alcohol is in the US, with the same intended purpose – disinfection of small cuts and scrapes. In this compound, it is used as an anti-microbial, possessing bactericidal and fungicidal activity. Its molecular structure allows for the dissolving of polar, hydrophilic, and non-polar, hydrophobic, and organic compounds, which covers substances such as the oils produced by the scalp. Simply, it will breakdown buildup on the scalp while also disinfecting the area.

Menthol is an organic compound derived from peppermint oil. As I’m sure many of you already know given its prevalence in hair products, peppermint oil is a great vasodilator and increases blood flow to the scalp. There was a 2014 study done on mice comparing four substances for hair growth – saline, jojoba oil, minoxidil, and peppermint oil; peppermint oil was the most effective for increasing hair thickness, number of hair follicles, and the depth of follicles, without causing any unwanted side effects or weight gain in the animals. It has a wonderful fragrance, and amazing overall health benefits as well.

Emu Oil targets skin aging: it can help slow down wrinkle formation, contains essential fatty acids, easily penetrates the scalp, and reduces oxidative stress on the scalp. Australian Aboriginals have considered oil from the emu to be sacred and part of “bush medicine” for thousands of years. It is also anti-inflammatory and a powerful emulsifier, better than propylene-glycol. A Boston University study combined Emu oil with coconut oil and found a 20% increase in hair growth activity as compared to corn oil.

Additional non-active ingredients in TricoMax serum are plant-based Collagen, Niacinamide and Kaolin Clay. The serum also has a brownish tinted concealer and may add other tint options in the future.

The efficacy of TricoMax is improved by adding positive

charges to the very molecules that make TricoMax. Adding a positive charge allows this product to more bind to fine hairs. Vanessa Thomas, a noted cosmetic chemist, explains this action by noting that positively charged ions repel each other, preventing layering of product, which helps prevent build-up on hair, leaving hair feeling lighter. She adds that it is especially important for use on curly and natural hair as it helps not to weigh hair down, increases softness and smoothness, improves texture and shine, reduces frizz, increases color preservation, binds to damaged hair, and reduces friction between the hair shafts, preventing direct damage to the hair.

Directions for use.

Simply apply a dime sized amount to all thinning areas and gently rub in to increase absorption. You may feel a slight tingling sensation as the active ingredients go to work.

A special skin-colored tint immediately camouflages and conceals the thinning area.

Clinical Trials

The photos that you are seeing here are from the clinical trial, these are real results, and John Satino continues to offer TricoMax to these patients. We are in contact with them for continued follow up, and there have still been no adverse reactions to our knowledge. On average, clinical trial participants experienced a 371% increase in new non-vellus hair counts in the test count area. There was an average of 93.5% increase in hair numbers after six months of use.

Even more exciting about this therapy is that the method of action is generally synergistic with current hair regrowth therapies.

Hair Authority Fall 2022 21

Works with – and enhances – other hair loss therapies.

There is no molecular or cellular competition between this and even minoxidil or finasteride. You can use TricoMax alongside dietary supplements. You can use TricoMax with laser-therapy. You can use TricoMax and wear protective hairstyles. You can even use TricoMax and go to the gym; I’ve worn it to hot yoga, and it stayed in place on my front hairline, didn’t melt down my forehead, was almost unnoticeable.

There is a multi-product system for TricoMax to deliver effective results.

TricoMax Shampoo contains essential bioactive nutrients that nourish, moisturize, and improve the hair and scalp, creating a healthy environment for hair vitality and growth.

TricoMax Scalp Therapy is a revitalizing toner. It is pH balanced and helps to gently stimulate the scalp and support the delivery of critical nutrients to hair follicles. This should be applied to the scalp daily, either in the morning or at night. For the biggest impact, the user would shampoo in the morning, then massage the scalp therapy into the scalp and allow for absorption.

They would then apply the TricoMax serum to conceal areas of thinning, style as usual and go on their way. Additional serum would be applied to the full scalp in the evening before bed.

Let’s look back at what we’ve learned:

TricoMax is a system that will work in conjunction with hair

loss treatment modalities currently in use. It does not need to be a stand-alone product, but it can be. It has positively charged molecules to help reduce buildup.

TricoMax is the combination of peppermint oil, emu oil, saw palmetto, and patented Alpha-Varin complex, each of which has positive outcomes on hair growth when used individually, now packaged together and delivering effective results. It was formulated by top hair loss researchers based on the latest medical advancements and tested by an FDA hair loss research expert.

When a man shaves his head, we lose a client. And when a woman loses faith in treatment, she feels defeated in her last option, to wear a wig.

TricoMax believes that men should be able to talk to a professional about their hair loss and be given an option that will be quickly impactful; and that women deserve to feel good in the healthy, natural hair they wear.

TricoMax is the all-natural option our clients have been looking for. The call for a non-hormonal, non-toxic solution has been answered. For more

Finasteride Spray Expanding

Finjuve Spray with Finasteride from Almirall will shortly be available in Korea after Boryung secured the exclusive rights from Almirall, a Spainbased pharmaceutical company. The product is scheduled to be launched in the 1st qtr 2023.

Not Yet Available in US

Finjuve Spray with Finasteride is not currently available in the United States. However, it is approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and has been used to treat AGA in Europe since 2014. It is extremely effective, as studies have shown that patients achieved an average of 34 percent more hair after one year of treatment.

About Finasteride

Finasteride, the active ingredient in Finjuve Spray, has been used for decades to treat male pattern hair loss and androgenic alopecia. It works by blocking the formation of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Finasteride is an FDA-approved medication and is traditionally available in tablets. However, Finjuve Spray with Finasteride from Almirall is a topical form of the drug which can be applied directly to the affected area as either a spray or foam.

Increased Scalp Penetration

Finjuve contains a water-soluble semi-synthetic polymer with high skin compatibility, which allows the main active ingredient, finasteride, to penetrate deep into the dermis of the scalp.

Prescription Only

Finjuve Spray with Finasteride will be available in Korea through prescription only, so customers should speak to their doctor about whether this form of Finasteride is the right option for their needs.

Convenient

Finjuve Spray is a convenient and effective way to fight AGA, as it only needs to be applied once daily to the hair loss area. Two or three quick squirts are usually enough.

Avoids Side Effects

It is important to note that oral Finasteride has been associated with some side effects, but Finjuve Spray is considered a safe and convenient way to get the same benefits without these concerns. In clinical trials, the Finjuve-group showing blood concentration levels only one-hundredth of the oral form after 24 weeks of treatment.

Does It Work?

Finjuve Spray provides fast and effective results that can be seen after 12 weeks of use.

In a phase 3 clinical trial, Finjuve showed equivalent efficacy compared with 1 mg of oral finasteride in terms of target area hair count (TAHC) and a lower incidence of adverse events.

An Ethical Dilemma Within Hair Wellness Finasteride

When a 49-year-old man in Israel took his own life and listed the drug Finasteride (sold under the brand name Propecia by the manufacturer Merck) as the main reason for it, the concern of the public peaked.

The world was awestruck with this news; could a drug that is used to treat hair loss in men be tied to symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and even suicide?

It is widely known that Finasteride may have negative effects on sexual functioning, but nobody could have imagined the risk on mental health and safety.

And this was a bigger issue than anyone could have anticipated. According to the health data company IQVIA, annual prescriptions of finasteride have increased to over 2.4 million in the USA alone by 2020.

Many men have since come forward to share their stories, some of whom likened their demeanor to resemble “emotionless zombies”. And their reports surrounding the side-effects grew to include sleeplessness, memory impairment, panic attacks, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

Situation surrounding the Finasteride drug grew so dire that a health advocacy organization called “The Post-Finasteride

Syndrome Foundation” was formed to encourage the reporting of side effects.

But what does this mean for the hair wellness community, and for those suffering from hair loss?

The Ethical Dilemma in the Hair Care Community

The cited news article highlighted an extremely critical aspect of pharmaceutical drugs for hair loss: many of the men who reported side effects from Finasteride, also reported how easily it was prescribed to them. According to one user, the side effects were never mentioned, so he was completely in the dark.

Anyone experiencing hair loss is already going through emotional turmoil. Having to deal with side effects from a drug just adds to their stress and discomfort which is counterproductive.

While Finasteride may be an adequate treatment solution for some, it is still crucial for physicians to be transparent about the side effects and the history of the drug. The moral implications suggest that patients should be accurately informed, so that they can make an informed decision on whether or not they decide to go through with the treatment. And even if they do, they would be emotionally and mentally prepared.

In fact, the support may need to be taken a step further when administering Finasteride. With research linking the drug to depression, and the anecdotal accounts to back the association, the post-Finasteride support may have to include psychiatric evaluations and even counseling. This also suggests that the risk/benefit ratio should be carefully assessed by physicians when prescribing Finasteride, especially for those who plan to use it as a first-line defense against hair loss.

Hair Authority Fall 2022 29

But how will these ethical implications affect patients? Do they have other options? The recent global health-conscious movement advocates an alternative solution: natural herbal remedies.

Natural Remedies as An Alternative Solution

Based on the latest research, Finasteride does not have to be the first and only treatment option for hair loss.

In fact, the most recent focus on health, wellness, and ancient holistic systems encouraged clinical studies to be carried out on natural herbal ingredients and their effects on hair loss. This was done primarily to avoid the harmful and potentially life-threatening side effects of the pharmaceutical drug mentioned.

Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme which converts testosterone to DHT- the compound responsible for shrinking hair follicles and inducing hair loss. Consequently, those in the scientific and wellness communities sought out natural herbs that worked in the same way: by blocking DHT. Below is a list of natural herbs that have been clinically and scientifically proven to stop hair loss and promote further regrowth.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is a palm plant native to the United States. The berries are used to treat a host of physical ailments naturally and holistically, and one of these ailments is hair loss. Recently, clinical studies have begun supporting the anecdotal claims that saw palmetto can be used to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth.

In fact, this research and several subsequent studies compared the herb extract to Finasteride and found that it acts in a similar way by inhibiting DHT converting enzymes, that induce hair loss. A review carried out in 2020 further highlighted the plant’s potential to act as a natural, side effect free supplement for hair growth.

Pumpkin Seed Extract

Similar to Saw Palmetto, the extract of pumpkin seeds has been clinically shown to inhibit the same DHT-converting enzyme (also known as 5-alpha reductase) in male patients, increasing.

their mean hair count by 40% in just 24 weeks. Another study highlighted that certain nutritional compounds (such as phytosterols) have the same DHT-blocking effects. Since pumpkin seed extract is rich in these nutritional compounds, this further supports the claim that the extract can be a natural treatment for hair loss.

Stinging Nettle Root

Another interesting herb is stinging nettle root, which studies have shown to have similar effects by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase and reducing DHT production.

The research also highlighted the herb’s significant anti-inflammatory effects. Since hair loss can also be caused by inflammation, stinging nettle root may have more than one protective property.

Green Tea Extract

Not only is this extract known for its antiox- idant and anticancer benefits, but also for its stimulation of hair growth.

Remarkably, one study showcased the ability of green tea extract to also inhibit the DHT converting enzyme, thus having significant effects on stopping hair loss and promoting its growth.

This may be owed to its high polyphenol content, which is great for hair and overall health.

Pygeum Bark Extract

This bark is extracted from the African cherry tree and is also known for its hair-growth promoting benefits.

30 Hair Authority Fall 2022

Clinical research has shown that, when combined with other botanical herbs, the extract reacts similarly to the ingredients mentioned above in stopping hair loss through the inhibition of 5-alpha reductase.

The Future of Ethical Healthcare

The latest research on natural DHT blockers suggests a solution-or at least another option-for healthcare professionals and physicians.

Once the situation of the patient experiencing hair loss is carefully assessed, hair loss professionals should present all possible options rather than automatically prescribing a pharmaceutical drug with questionable side effects.

Bald Men are up to 2.5 Times more Likely to Suffer Severe COVID-19

The link between baldness and severe COVID-19 cases is an intriguing area of scientific exploration. Researchers have observed that individuals with androgenetic alopecia, a common type of hair loss that affects both men and women, may be at a higher risk of developing serious complications due to the viral infection.

This connection is believed to be primarily driven by the influence of androgens, or male sex hormones, which are known to play a crucial role in the regulation of hair growth, as well as the immune system’s response to infections. Consequently, understanding this relationship holds significant potential for the development of more targeted and effective therapeutic interventions for COVID-19.

The impact of baldness on a person’s immune system is a fascinating area of scientific exploration, revealing intricate connections between hair loss, autoimmunity, and overall health. Research indicates that alopecia areata, a common cause of baldness, stems from an autoimmune response wherein the body’s immune cells mistakenly attack its own hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Furthermore, baldness has been associated with specific genetic markers related to immune system regulation, contributing to a higher susceptibility to certain health conditions such as thyroid disorders and type 1 diabetes.

By gaining further understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying these associations, researchers are paving the way for advanced therapeutic interventions that could not only tackle unwanted hair loss but also enhance immune functions and promote overall well-being.

83 Yrs. and Growing Hair!

Research Clinic finds Alpha Varin Complex™, the active ingredient in Tricomax™ Hair Serum, promotes hair growth - even among people of advanced age.

The CDC says Covid doesn’t cause hair loss, but John Satino, Director of the Hair & Scalp Clinic in Clearwater FL, has seen many such cases and is successfully helping men and women to regrow their hair - even if they are in their 80s!

In one case, an 83yr old female who had lost a major amount of her hair after contracting Covid in 2021 was started on a program that included a combination of Alpha Varin Complex™, lowlevel laser therapy, and an anti- bacterial shampoo. As can be seen below, the results were remarkable.

After six months the patient was so delighted, she began to dye her hair again - Figure 3

All-natural ALPHA VARIN Complex™ is a potent hemp extract that, combined with other proprietary ingredients, helps reduce inflammation, bring damaged hair back to health and promote hair growth. It is the active ingredient in the newly introduced Hair Serum for curly hair from TRICOMAX Inc.

The Minoxidil Response Test

The Only Test to See if You Can Regrow Your Hair

The Minoxidil Response Test (MRT) is an easy and accurate way to determine the level of hair follicle sensitivity to Minoxidil treatment.

This test will measure the response of individual hairs to topical Minoxidil solution applied over a period of time. The results can be used to help inform decisions about whether or not Minoxidil treatment is likely to be effective and to provide suggestions on how best to use the medication.

Who Should Consider Taking a Minoxidil Response Test?

The test can be completed at home and requires only a few pieces of equipment such as an applicator bottle, cotton swabs, and a timer. Results are available within 24 hours. By measuring the response of individual hairs to Minoxidil, the Minoxidil Response Test provides a more accurate assessment of how Minoxidil treatment is likely to work.

This test is especially useful in determining which areas will be most responsive and when further treatments may be needed. The Minoxidil Response Test can provide valuable insight into the effectiveness of Minoxidil treatments and help guide decision-making when it comes to Minoxidil use.

Research Team

The Minoxidil Response Test is the result of research conducted by Dr. Andy Goren, chief medical officer of Daniel Alain Labs. According to Dr. Goren, many people don’t know that only about half of men and 30-40% of women respond to Minoxidil. Also, it takes about six to nine months to see results, so people may end up wasting time and money before learning that Minoxidil isn’t going to help them.

With his team of researchers, Dr. Goren developed the MRT test as an alternative method for predicting Minoxidil response and it is designed to help individuals who are considering using Minoxidil for hair loss treatment. It provides an easy, accurate, and cost-effective way to measure individual hair sensitivity to Minoxidil.

The test can be used in conjunction with traditional methods.

By measuring individual hair sensitivity to treatments, the Minoxidil Response Test has become an invaluable tool for individuals looking to make informed decisions about their hair care.

Reliability

The Minoxidil Response Test is a safe, easy-to-use and has been shown to be reliable and accurate. With its ease-of-use and cost-effectiveness, MRT provides an ideal solution for those looking to improve their results with Minoxidil treatments.

How Does the Minoxidil Response Test Work?

The principle behind the test is that for Minoxidil to work, it must be activated by a specific enzyme found in hair follicles: SULT1A1. By testing for the presence of this enzyme, it is possible to determine which hairs are likely to respond to Minoxidil treatment and which are not.

Summary

The Minoxidil Response Test is a simple, accurate, and cost-effective way to get a better understanding of how Minoxidil treatments are likely to work for you.
