Obama’s First Presidential Press Conference: Economy First BY TJ KELLY

MANAGING EDITOR

President Barack Obama had his first presidential press conference Monday, February 9, to discuss the most pressing issues that face the nation today. The top of his agenda for the conference was convincing the nation—mainly Republicans—that the economic stimulus plan is necessary in order to bring the economy up from its currently dangerous slump. According to the New York Times, an economic stimulus plan is meant to help reverse the effects of a recession through the use of fiscal policy. An economic stimulus plan would be expected to decrease the unemployment rate and increase consumer confidence, causing more spending and thus creating a more stable economy. Although this stimulus plan has the potential to turn the economy around from worse to better, President Obama admits that “the plan is not perfect.” However, the president believes that failing to act on the problem at hand “could turn a crisis into a catastrophe.” At Monday’s press conference, President Obama said, “I think that what I’ve said is what other economists have said across the political spectrum, which is that if you delay acting on an [economic problem] of this severity, then you potentially create a negative spiral that becomes much more difficult for us to get out of.” He compared the United States government’s potential

lack of action to that of Japan’s “lost decade” in the nineties—ten years of rich culture and improved technology was seemingly lost due to the Japanese government’s failure to aid the deteriorating economy. President Obama mentioned throughout the press conference that this stimulus package was free of pork barrel spending, which many Republicans have accused him of in past weeks. He made it clear that, contrary to many Republican’s beliefs, the government’s plan is the only chance for the economy to turn around—the money spent in the stimulus plan is not just going to be thrown away to a lost cause. President Obama stated that he was

not willing to listen to “the folks who presided over a doubling of the national debt” when taking advice on what will and will not work for the economy. In order to surpass these differences, he is aiming on working towards bipartisan agreements between Democrats and Republicans in future decisions. “It’s going to take time to break down those bad habits” of reflexive partisanship,” said the president in the press conference Monday. Even with billions of dollars on the stimulus plan, he does not know what the future of America’s economy holds. “We don’t know yet whether we’re going to need additional money, or how much addi-

tional money we’ll need,” He stated that he didn’t come into the nation’s capital “ginned up” to spend billions of taxpayer dollars. The president said that pushing a stimulus “wasn’t how I envisioned my presidency beginning.” The economy has certainly moved to the top of the new administration’s agenda list. His main concern is securing the nation financially by reversing the economic catastrophe caused by eight years of simply decreasing taxes while ignoring the underlying problems at hand. However, the president assured, “I’m more interested in looking forward than in looking backward.”

When there is so much talent in a school like MHS, competition for all types of teams and ensembles is fierce. The rivalry and intensity among students during their artistic or athletic careers in high school often can match the level of professionals in their fields. However, when questions about the methods of picking parts and choosing teams arise, the people on the wrong end of the process (those who get cut, or those who feel their talents are underutilized) are usually behind them, and rightfully so. It is a natural and expected fact of a competitive process that those who do not make a team or ensemble will question the decisions of the advisors, be it coach or director, and will doubt the talents of those who do prove lucky enough to make the cut.

Issues usually revolve around one dilemma: is seniority a big enough reason to get a part in a play or a spot on a team? This uncertainty plagues the decisions of advisors year after year. It is an especially prevalent concern drama departments have to deal with across Long Island. Musicals are notoriously difficult to cast because the ensemble must be perfect for its specific musical—there is no room for wrong choices, because the success of the play hinges on the chemistry seen on stage and off, between cast and advisor, performers and audience. “Leads need to be able to interact with other characters, have chemistry, and have a good stage presence besides being able to sing extremely well,” said Mrs. Dempsey, one of the directors of the school play last year and this year. continued on page 2

Vending Machines: The Instant Energizer BY LIZ HENRY CONTRIBUTOR

Waking up in the morning and going to school is not a hard task for some students. But for others it is just the opposite. What if there was a way to give those students a little boost of energy during the day? The answer: vending machines! At Massapequa High School a student’s first class begins promptly at 7:30 a.m. A student may have an elective or a main core class in math, science, social studies, and English, all of which require the student’s total concentration. This can be a difficult task to a student who does not have the time or desire to eat breakfast before school and therefore lacks the necessary nutrients in his body to stimulate his mind. If he could quickly stop at a vending machine prior to first period and pick up something as small as a granola bar, he would have the energy and nutrients necessary to get his mind energized. With the required nutrients in his body he would be able to focus more in class, comprehend more material, and as a result get a better grade. As the day continues, a student at MHS may easily become drained and lose stamina. Nine periods every day can easily drain a student. He may even fall asleep during a class! A student is allotted one period a day to have lunch. However, some students’ schedules become too full and a lunch period

becomes expendable. While students like water and Snapple. about the school. Another problem faculty and parents may have with vending machines is obesity. Obesity is a tremendous concern, and teens and young adults are at risk of becoming obese due to a poor diet. Do not fear—MHS is one of the top schools in Nassau County and has a wonderful staff and faculty that have been educating students since the seventh grade about health and nutrition. As students mature, they become more independent and aware of their decisions. Giving students ownership of their health will encourage independence and healthy decision-making. As far as health concerns go, the school has the control over the foods in the vending machines. They have the power to put healthier foods into the machine, making the decision even easier for the students. Rather than putting in dangerous sugary foods, MHS can put in 100calorie packs, fruits, and whole grain items. Vending machines that are left on throughout the day can significantly benefit the school and the students. When a student is able to get the necessary nutrients, they are more energized and apt to participate and be more involved in class. The boost a quick snack from the vending machine can give will contribute to the positive learning environment in MHS.

The Senior Advantage, continued from page 1

But what about “deserving” a spot after years of dedication to the program? Does seniority ever come into play when choosing roles for a musical? Mrs. Dempsey answered, “No. Talent is the deciding factor. It is the only aspect (besides acting ability) that is considered when students at MHS try out for the musical. Some seniors think that they are entitled to the lead parts, but we go purely on talent as a singer and actor. We’ve been known to have ninth graders sweep the lead cast—a couple of years ago, in West Side Story, we had ninth graders in the parts of Anita and Bernardo.” Mrs. Greene, the other director, commented that, “We understand that the seniors have paid their dues, but whatever works best for the show is what is important.” They also pointed out that the directors’ heavy involvement in the show, including everything from pre-screening the play to regulating sets and costumes, make them the ones that know the play—and what’s needed in terms of talent and cast—best. This is a practical process and realistic decision-making creed, one that will almost definitely be used in

the ever-looming “real world,” but how fair is it to high school kids who have been dutifully waiting for their turn in the spotlight? Every year has its fair share of disgruntled and disappointed seniors, wondering why they were passed over for underclassmen. A senior at MHS stated, “People don’t get the opportunity— it’s high school, not Broadway.” Another agreed, saying “It’s not about seniority, but a lot of talented people were over-passed.” At Miller Place High School, a senior was incensed about the casting situation in her school’s musical. “The play chosen was, in my opinion, perfectly suited to our seniors in terms of our voices and our chemistry—but not one senior got a lead role. This group of seniors has been in the play each year since we were freshmen, and I think it is pretty ridiculous that the cast ended up the way it did.” With strong opinions and high hopes, it is inevitable that some will be saddened and frustrated over the casting of characters and placement of a lineup. The struggle of talent over seniority is one of the prevalent aspects of life, in and out of high school.

ISRAEL- Recently, Israeli troops have withdrawn from the Hamas ruled territory of the Gaza Strip after a cease-fire was ordered mid-January, according to msnbc.com. The war began as a response to Hamas military arms that have one-eighth of the Israeli population within rocket range, in addition to years of conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon deemed both sides’ actions, “outrageous,” and “appalling and unacceptable.” Additionally, there is an international investigation taking place over whether Israel used white phosphorus weapons while fighting. White phosphorus can be used in war to illuminate a target and is not illegal; however, it can cause serious burns. According to Amnesty International, if Israel was firing white phosphorus into highly populated areas of Gaza, Israel could be charged

with a war crime. The 23-day war totaled over 1,000 deaths and over 4,000 wounded in Gaza. SRI LANKA- Rebels in Northern Sri Lanka have conducted a series of bombing attacks in Eastern Sri Lanka. Due to the recent increase in activity, the Sri-Lankan military has opened a 14-mine “safe zone” at the edge of the rebel territory. From there, the 250,000 civilians trapped in the rebel area can be removed and brought to a safer area. Over 70,000 have perished in the violence. MEXICO- Mayor Eduardo Romero of Guanajuato, Mexico claimed Guanajuato the “kissing capital of the world” after an anti-obscenity law caused people to believe they would be fined for kissing in public. The government denied that accusation, but decided to suspend the passing of the law so the wording could be fixed.

POINT

Talent or Seniority? When the question of talent versus seniority was presented to the editorial staff of The Chief, the answer was a unanimous vote in favor of talent being more important. In the end, it comes down to what is best for the specific group, team, ensemble, whatever—if one wants to be the best, one has to use the best. Though it would be nice to have every person who tries out for a part get one, that is unrealistic and almost irresponsible of the director or coach. To hand out prime slots as rewards rather than really taking the time to determine where each person is suited detracts from the ensemble as a whole, and reduces the quality of the finished production. However, seniority does end up being a legitimate factor when adding in other elements, such as an even talent level. If two candidates are in a deadlock in every other respect besides age, the older one with more experience should get the part

or the slot on the roster. Effort also counts—improvement should be acknowledged by a superior position or more playing time. If a person decides to try harder in order to achieve more, then he or she should be rewarded for it. Even this, however, should not be used as pure reason to give a coveted spot. Leads in plays, captains on teams, and top editing positions on newspapers should be given out on a basis that is a combination of effort, dedication, and talent. Leading a team requires the person to reassure the rest that he or she knows exactly how to handle him or herself in all kinds of situations, good and bad. Although it is hard for some upperclassmen to accept that their younger counterparts may be more fitted for the role or position, sometimes that’s just the way it is.

The newly appointed governor of New York State, David Patterson, proposed a preposterous tax on all regular non-diet soda. This “obesity tax” is completely unnecessary because it influences our choices as Americans, contradicting the notion of a free market. Firstly, the nature of this tax is unconstitutional. Enacting this tax would mean that the government would have the ability to limit what the American public eats by taxing goods the government deems unhealthy. It is up to the public to choose how they eat. Raising the prices of food in order to force Americans to eat healthily is purely undemocratic and hinders freedom of choice. The new tax hardly seems to promote healthier living upon further inspection. Diet soda, which is exempt from the tax, contains artificial sugar (called saccharin) which can be dangerous to one’s health after repeated consumption. According to www.hc-sc.gc.ca, a Canadian health

site, Canada banned the use of saccharin in the 1970s, about the same time the United States proposed a ban, which was withdrawn in 1991. According to edinformatics.com, some studies shown on laboratory rats there was a noticeable increase in bladder cancer, after considerable consumption of saccharin. Although this study was not definitive, saccharin is a possible carcinogen for animals, so why should it be okay for human consumption? Finally, shouldn’t Governor Patterson be focusing on more important bills to be passed? He should not be wasting his time raising the prices of soda when he can be doing more important things like illegal immigration. As Governor he should be focusing more on helping the state of New York instead of instating petty taxes. Overall, this tax is a threat to the freedom of New Yorkers. We are citizens of the United States, and should not be influenced to eat one food or beverage over another because of a government tax.

A Push for Farm Foods, Healthier Choices BY KATIE JACQUES STAFF WRITER

Public schools on Long Island are working to better their school lunch menus by adding healthier and fresher choices instead of serving frozen foods, which have little to no nutritional value. I think it is great that schools are making healthier choices for their students. It can be hard for students to eat healthily if they don’t have the right choices. Most kids today are overweight, which may be a result of the food that schools are serving. If schools serve healthier foods, kids will learn to eat healthier and then carry those

eating habits with them for the rest of their lives. The cafeteria at Massapequa High School has also been making changes in its menus to better students’ health. “We don’t make fried foods as much, only 3 days a week instead of 5 days a week, and we now offer grilled chicken and salads,” Maria, a cafeteria worker stated. It is great to see these healthy changes being made in our food selections, and it will definitely have a positive effect on all students. Schools don’t realize it, but the foods they offer will leave an impact on their students’ lives forever.

Minors Man the Store Alone BY CHARLOTTE BURGER HEAD COPY EDITOR

Once we teenagers turn 16, many of us sprint to the high school’s General Office to get our working papers. Finally we will be free, no longer dependent on parents and birthday and holiday gifts for spending money. Is this new independence, however, worth sacrificing our safety? On the majority, the New York State Department of Labor has done much to protect working minors. They have regulated what hours we can work, how many hours we can work, and what tasks we can and cannot perform. Nevertheless, there remains one untouched area: minors working in a store, alone. Minors working by themselves can be easy targets for criminals any time of day. After dark, however, when stores begin to close down and shopping centers become less populated, the danger level increases. A minor working unattended in the only open store in a shopping center is the perfect candidate for a robbery and/or abuse.

For instance, in September of 2008, in Chicago, a seventeen-year-old girl was working alone at night in a sandwich shop and was abducted from her store and sexually assaulted. Unfortunately, nothing can currently be done in response to situations where minors are working alone because there are no laws regarding such conditions. The Nassau County Youth Council, a teen advisory committee to the County Executive, is working to get such a law passed. The Council is currently writing a proposal, which they will present to county and state legislators in the spring. Having had the experience of working by myself at night, I know how dangerous and scary it can be. Additionally, having negative experiences in the work force now can be deterrents for teen workers when they enter the adult working world. Hopefully new laws will be passed to remedy the problems of teen workers and increase youth worker safety in the future.

Saturday Night Blind BY DAVID TROMPETER STAFF WRITER

The popular late night sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live has recently been attacked by the National Federation of the Blind, as well as David Patterson, after a skit where SNL regular Fred A r m i sen portrays New York governor David Patterson as an unintelligent representative not ready for the position he currently holds. While the sketch made one or two references to Patterson’s disability (i.e. holding a graph upside down), most of the sketch wasn’t focused on that aspect of Patterson. If the governor and the association for the blind are going to get offended over something so miniscule then maybe they didn’t watch the rest of the sketch. SNL didn’t target Patterson because of his blindness, but made fun

of him as a major politician of the state it is based in and criticized his decisionmaking ability and experience. SNL has made fun of politicians for years and for David Patterson to use the cop-out that he is exempt from an SNL skit because of his disability is ridiculous. What’s next, the banning of any sketch involving people in wheelchairs or the elderly? Gov. Patterson, get source: gothamist.com over it. If a large national show like SNL takes the time out of its busy schedule to take a jab at you it isn’t an attack on your character, but a playful jest. Those who take everything too seriously can laugh at nothing. Everything is too stressful for them and there is never enough time. Governor Patterson, laugh it off and don’t take it so seriously; look the other way.

Nobody’s Watching BY JOHN NELLE STAFF WRITER

Nothing is scarier than the weak government regulation on the Federal Reserve System. During this time of economic recession, we as a nation need to be reassured that our government is not running away with our money, and destroying the dollar. Many people feel that the government has given the Federal Reserve System, also commonly known as “The Fed,” too much freedom in how they influence our money. “This could be more disastrous than the Great Depression” Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr., a well known economics expert, said. It is time to be educated on the power and problems of the Fed and the dangers we could face in the future. Most people cannot imagine America without the Fed; they view it as the heart of the country, our source of employment, the moneymakers, and the reason why we have such a great economy. However, all it does is prop up the government according to Rockwell in the article “Going for the Heart” published in August 2008 on his website lewrockwell.com. The Federal Reserve has the ability to make money, and enables the government to do whatever they want without asking the people for money. This may sound great on paper, but in reality they are printing too much of their own money.

For example, all the bailouts for the car and mortgage companies could actually be making the economy worse; Rockwell says that money is being printed out of “thin air.” Additionally, no taxes were collected for the bailouts to back them up. This serious problem could lead to inflation, because that money is unnecessary in circulation. The Fed has to be careful with money production so the value of the American dollar does not decrease with each bailout. We are in trillions dollars of debt that we cannot pay back stresses Rockwell. Besides printing money when they want it, the Fed also hands the government the money without caring where it goes according to Ron Paul, a Republican representative from Texas. Our government knows that if it were to raise taxes for the war in Iraq, there would be a huge public outcry at the enormous tax increase. So, to avoid the outcry the government has the Fed print the money they need and then hand it to them says Rockwell’s article “War and Inflation.” Rockwell is not the only person criticizing the Fed’s current economic policies. There are many people who want more regulation and less corruption. In any case, The Federal Reserve needs to stabilize the American economy.

On the evening of November 7, 2000, the state of Florida became the most powerful state in the country. With presidential hopefuls George W. Bush and Al Gore nervous, and a whole country waiting for an outcome, this southern state held twenty-five of the most important electoral votes in the history of the United States. As the battle for the state became closer and closer it had to be made sure that every vote was accounted for and that the vote was done fairly. But it just didn’t turn out that way. The 25 Electoral votes went to the candidate that actually lost the Florida popular vote. In an incredibly controversial election, the decision for a recount was taken to the Supreme Court. A 5-4 vote declared that recounting the ballots in Florida was unconstitutional. As the voting system in Florida became suspect, it was learned that 58,000 votes were unaccounted for and 54 percent of the votes supported the Democratic Party. Although this story was uncovered and the country felt more and more upset and confused about the election, it was time for George W. Bush to become the forty-third president of the U.S.A.

Is public display of affection a necessary act? In high school it is. Throughout the halls of Massapequa High School, one may see students holding a little more than just schoolbooks. Some teachers of MHS try to shut their eyes to avoid the obscene behaviors of the students. Mrs.Tuniewicz stated, “I personally don’t enjoy walking out of my classroom on the first floor by the general office and seeing this type of behavior. Approximately 30 people from ages 16- 19 were interviewed regarding online relationships. They were asked whether online relationships were safe or unsafe; especially at a young age. Seventeen people immediately opted that online relationships are inappropriate, and very unsafe. However, 11 people believe that online relationships are not dangerous as long as they do not give out personal information. Two people were on the fence about it; it can be either safe or dangerous. According to the chart, teenagers have grown up, and learned that online relationships are not the safest things to participate in. All of the news stories, live interviews, and local newspapers alert teenagers about local sex offenders, and rapists who use fake information to lure their victims.

As teenagers, we have all had our fair share of relationships and love triangles. Unfortunately, cheating is more prevalent than we would like to believe. However, the theory of “once a cheater always a cheater” is not so realistic. What is cheating? The definition is currently up for interpretation. Some believe that cheating is only extreme sexual contact between you and someone other than the one you are committed to. Others however believe that any interest in another person while committed to someone else is cheating. Seventeen-year-old senior Monica Perrino believes that cheaters have the ability to reform their sleazy ways as long as they are with the one. “They can change if they’re with the right person.” Senior Rachel Randazzo agrees, saying, “They can change because everyone has a conscious and will most likely feel enough remorse to change as a person.” Out of the ten people who were polled, with ages’ ranging from seventeen to fifty-nine, only two have cheated, mainly in the younger years. Both felt remorse, and only one of them cheated again afterwards. The senior who has not cheated since, claims that it was one of the most educational processes she has ever

case, it took me being disloyal to realize how much I really care for the guy I’m with. It won’t happen again. Ever.” A seventeen-year-old male senior from MHS, said, “From my experience, [cheating] can be forgiven, but [conversely] it can happen again,” implying that one who has cheated can be forgiven but never trusted in the same circumstances in the future. “If you’re honest and apologize, and realize consciously that cheating was a mistake, you should be forgiven and given another chance,” senior Becca Heiser added. I believe people can change just as strongly as I believe people make mistakes. However, I am not suggesting we embrace those “raging hormones” within us and to take any opportunity “get some action.” If one feels enough remorse, once a cheater is not always a cheater.

Smokin’ Al’s Restaurant BY NATALIE TAYLOR JOURNALISM STUDENT

After months and months of anticipation, Smokin’ Al’s finally opened in Massapequa, and reviews have generally been good. Despite the lack of parking and some pricey foods, this restaurant has been jam-packed since opening day on November 28, and its tasty, authentic, southern food keeps drawing people back for more. Unfortunately, the former 1800-Flowers building on the corner of Merrick Road and Park Boulevard could not be a worse location for this hot new restaurant. Parking is scarce. The municipal parking lot behind the building and shopping strip is always very crowded, which forces people to

walk further than they would prefer, especially during the winter. People are fighting for the few parking spots in the front, and it is very dangerous to drivers on Merrick Road who have to be cautious of cars suddenly pulling in and out of parking spots. The restaurant itself is bigger and much nicer than I’d expected. It’s open setting is necessary to accommodate the masses of people who come to eat every night. The new brick walls, open kitchen, and bar are all very impressive. However, the service is not. After being seated with menus, I did not have a waitress until twenty minutes later when I asked a bus boy for some help. My waitress was rude and unfriendly. She didn’t check up after our food was

Seagalogy: A Look at Steven Seagal’s Career BY JOHN NELLE STAFF WRITER

Steven Seagal’s career might be down the toilet now-a-days, but that doesn’t mean we have to move on and forget about this out of shape action star. Now is the time to pick up the book Seagalogy: A Study of The Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal written by Vern. Yes, Steven Seagal may be an out of shape actor but this book really shows Seagal is much more. Please don’t pass the book over—it’s not just a book that reviews Seagal’s movies. It also reviews his blues music and his energy drink, Lightning Bolt. Vern doesn’t review movies like everyone else. He is an expert in “films of badass cinema” and reviews his movies on Ain’t It Cool News website. First of all, Vern admires that Seagal can still put out movies each year, even though he knows most of

Seagal’s movies are corny. Regardless of the corniness, Vern’s mission is to report and review all the great pieces that come out of each and every Seagal film, including the ridiculous quotes, dialogues, and action scenes. Aside from whether or not you like Steven Seagal movies, you should really take a flip through this book. Vern does an excellent job of going though every movie Seagal has been in and picking out all the significant moments. From the ridiculous quotes to the farfetched action scenes and hilarious plot motives, to the ridiculous voice over of Seagal’s voice: this book has it all. Vern even throws in some of Seagal’s music and his other projects to spice up the book. The bottom line here, “alligata,” is that this book is simply hilarious. If you ever watch a Steven Seagal film, you won’t be watching it the same way again after reading this book.

Spotlight on Andrew Branigan Miracle After Miracle BY KATIE JACQUES STAFF WRITER

As I walked into the quiet house, hands flew in conversation. Words were not to be heard, only seen. When I saw Andrew Branigan, his face lit up. As Andrew and I communicated with American Sign Language, I began to realize so much more about him. I discovered so much more behind Andrew, more than anyone could possibly imagine. I couldn’t believe how many obstacles Andrew has had in his life and I couldn’t believe that through it all he still had a big smile on his face everyday. At two months, Andrew’s family learned he was deaf and at seven months he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, a non-contagious condition that causes physical disability in human development. This was a result of the German Measles that Andrew’s mother had during pregnancy. Now, Andrew lives his life in a wheelchair and communicates through his eyes and hands everyday. Andrew has survived a total of 30 surgeries. These surgeries include back, hip, knee, foot, and much more. Doctors claimed that Andrew wouldn’t be able to walk or get out of his wheelchair, and he would be unable to live a normal life when he grew up. But Andrew has definitely proven the doctors wrong. After his back surgery during the summer of 2008, he was able to gradually start walking and get out of his wheelchair. What doctors claimed to be impossible was proven wrong. Andrew is now a senior at Mass-

apequa High School. Before attending Massapequa he went to seven different schools on Long Island. These schools range from schools for the deaf, special educational schools, and public schools. It is very difficult at any age to change schools and adapt to new people, but Andrew’s conditions made it even harder. “I sometimes get frustrated with school work because there is so much,” Andrew signed. It is very hard for Andrew in the mainstream (public) schools because he doesn’t learn directly from his teacher speaking, but through his interpreter. In addition, most people who attend public schools can hear, which makes it harder for him to IAN GOODMAN//THE CHIEF fit into his surroundings. But through all these obstacles, Andrew has grown into a very strong person. “I plan on going to Nassau Community College next year,” Andrew signed. He plans on working on computers or becoming a movie director. Some may say this is impossible but Andrew can prove them wrong. Andrew may not realize it but he is a hero to many people. Through all of his struggles he has continued to live his life with a great, happy spirit. There were plenty of times when Andrew could have given up but he continued to move forward and look on the bright side. Through Andrew’s struggles, he has taught other people to never give up. Miracle after miracle, Andrew Branigan proves to himself and to others that anything is possible.

Left 4 Dead BY MATTHEW ELDER JOURNALISM STUDENT

It’s the zombie apocalypse. Only you and three friends stand against a never-ending army of zombies. Your only hope is to go through every last one of them. Your chances of surviving: minimal. Sounds like fun! If Capcom’s Resident Evil series has taught gamers anything, it’s that killing zombies is fun. For a long time, the image of the zombie has often been seen as a slow, lumbering re-animated corpse attempting to chase after you and devour your flesh. That’s all well and good, but these kinds of zombies don’t offer much of a challenge, as their only movement speed (slow) makes it all too easy for players to simply walk away, leaving them in the dust with little effort. Then the movie 28 Days Later changed all that, introducing a new breed of zombies that can sprint just as fast as you can, and their savage, unruly nature makes them twice as scary. Now, Valve Corporation’s newest creation, Left 4 Dead, pits you against a city full of these newer zombies as you try to survive and escape. Does this game bring about a new dawn of the dead, or is it just as brainless as the zombies are? Players take control of four survivors of the zombie apocalypse as they try to escape a nameless city full of enraged “Infected” (the zombies). Your main objective is to make it to a series of safe houses to complete each level, and by the end of the last level, hopefully, be rescued by an army helicopter. And by the way, I say “hopefully” because the first time I completed the game, the helicopter took off with my computercontrolled comrades and left me to be mauled by zombies. The end credits pronounced me deceased (I wish I was kidding). Now, I’m not really spoiling anything with the story, because, from what I can tell, there really is no story.

You’re never even told why the zombie outbreak began in the first place. You’re pretty much dropped into the middle of the city and the game says, “There are zombies. Kill they arse!” This may trouble some gamers as the lack of answers by the end of the game can be disappointing. Then again, we usually don’t play video games for the story anyway. What really matters is how it plays.

While the gun controls and shooting handle like any other first-person shooter, the main theme for this game is co-op. A zombie apocalypse is best handled with friends, and the game does a spectacular job of making it feel like you really need them to survive. As you play, you’ll found out all too quickly that you’re starving for health and ammunition nearly all the time. Not to mention the sheer number of zombies (upwards of hundreds on screen at a time), create a sense of urgency more recent survivalhorror games seem to be lacking. Having an extra pair of hands and guns makes the trek a bit easier, but you’ll absolutely have to work as a team if you want to prevail. You’ll also need your friends around when the special zombies show up, like the Smoker which will try to strangle you with its long tongue: your chances of getting away are much better if someone comes to save you. They’re also useful when your life bar runs out. When this happens, you won’t die right away, giving your partners ample time run over and revive you with a first aid kit. Even if you can’t get any of your real friends to come over to your house though, the game does a good job of pro-

viding substitutes: you can either play with computer-controlled AIs (which are actually competent for once), or you can find someone online to help you out. The latter, as most online gamers will know, can be a blessing as well as a curse, as there’s always the chance of you finding “that one guy” who decides to be a jerk and shoot you instead for some cheap laughs. Luckily, the game allows you the option to vote him out of the game, which is a nice touch. Even though the zombies are all horrendously grotesque, Left 4 Dead is a really good looking game. The graphics, the tone, the lighting and the atmosphere create a bleak world full of nasty surprises just waiting for you around the corner. The zombies themselves source: bdgamer.net look crazed and manic while attacking you, adding more to the urgency of the game. The computer AI is also something to be impressed with. These aren’t your average slowand-dumb zombies. These guys will use every means possible to try and get to you, including climbing on top of anything in their path to get higher ground. This kind of quality in the AI is something we sadly don’t see enough of in video games. The game’s multiplayer mode is also quite interesting, as it allows you to play as not just the human characters, but the zombies as well, giving you a multitude of new abilities to work with. However, since the human character’s only job is to survive, you ending play with a sever disadvantage as the Infected, but it’s still fun. Other then the lack of a real story, Left 4 Dead is a surprising gem that any zombie-lover, or FPS-lover for that matter, should own. The game is tons of fun, it has plenty of replay value, and it’s actually scary, like any good survival-horror game should be! Ladies and gentleman, the zombie apocalypse has begun. Bring friends! Final Score: 5/5

Behind the elusive antics of lead singer Axl Rose, to the free Dr. Pepper scandal, and the leaked tracks, Chinese Democracy’s reputation precedes itself. A cloud of negative hype and drama covers the actual music on the album. But that’s the catch. Despite all of the problems associated with this release, the music is actually...not bad.

The beauty of this record is its versatility. Never has Guns N’ Roses had such a diverse palate of sounds on one record. The title track “Chinese Democracy” takes a modern spin on the classic Guns N’ Roses sound. Axl puts his classic hair metal whine aside and delivers a fiercer and harder attack. While the guitarists do not have that Slash sound, they deliver a solid and catchy one. In “This I Love,” Axl and company capitalize on the piano rock sound that made “November Rain” a hit many years ago. Frankly, the track could just as easily fit on a rock version of Phantom of the Opera. However, sometimes this versatility just doesn’t work. “Sorry” opens up with a psychedelic guitar riff and Axl puts on an uncharacteristic drawl that at times is

Girls’ Basketball BY ANTHONY CASSERO CO-SPORTS EDITOR

Almost thirty years ago, a miracle happened in Lake Placid when the USA hockey team shocked the seemingly unbeatable Russian team. This year, another miracle happened with the turnaround of the girls’ basketball team. “The girls’ basketball team could make it to the playoffs this season,” Coach Roessler said. Shortly after, the girls made this statement seem like a huge exaggeration when they lost their first three games by fifty-one points. However, after a Christmas break trip to Lake Placid, the team had a turn-around. They’ve improved in every aspect of the game, as well as improving from the 1-3 record before the trip to their current record of 9-6. Jen Bentz believes the team’s turnaround is due to them getting a chance to live with each other in Lake Placid, resulting in some onthe-court chemistry. The wrestling team’s season’s outcome might not be determined on the mat but in a doctor’s office. The doctor’s office where Nick Isnardi found out that he broke his foot on New Year’s Eve, that is. Despite that fact, the wrestling team has managed to go 11-1 so far this season and 50-1 in their conference. The loss of Isnardi was considered a huge loss for the team since it was speculated that he would place in All County. Because of this major set back, senior Rob Seckler has had to step up and take his place. The team has dominated their opponents this season, once beating Baldwin 67-3. Junior Brendon Renda referred to the team as “solid” and said, “this team hasn’t won anything yet.” If the team can stay hungry and keep the season going the way it’s going, great things will happen this season.

regimen, coming in on weekends and holidays to perfect their form. The team’s two losses have been amazingly close this season as they lost to the Valley Stream district twice 743-715 and 1086-1062. Coach Nordon believes that these losses were due to the team being nervous facing the Valley Stream dynasty, although he stopped short of saying Valley Stream was in their head. If the team wants to revive the dynasty, they will have to learn how to beat Valley Stream. Coach Nordon has the team focused on going to the playoffs and making the team what it was in the ‘90s. When junior Steve Ruffino was asked what it would mean to restore the dynasty he said, “Awesome, it would be awesome.”

On the Fast Track BY PAIGE McATEE STAFF WRITER

Why did three girls cross Sunrise Highway in the pouring rain while there was a green light in rush hour traffic? The girl’s winter track team knows. Members of the Massapequa Girls Winter Track and Field Team are looking towards a season that will hopefully go down in the history books, since Newsday recently ranked them as the fifth best winter track team on Long Island. The girls won their Conference Championship on January 13, as they beat Farmingdale by over twenty points. Girls on the team completed workouts that have been more intense than previous years, and are running more miles per week than they have ever done before. Captain Liz Henry commented, “A lot of girls

have been getting stronger from going into the weight room three days a week. The team is definitely more dedicated this year.” All of the inter-team competition has made the team surpass many school records this season. At the Yale Classic on January 16, Emily Marchini, Keri Marks, Paige McAtee, and Caitlyn Krug won the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 12:43.18. They broke the school record by over 15 seconds and their time qualified them for the Eastern State Championships as well as the National Indoor Championships. The runners are looking forward to a strong championship season with many All-County runners, state qualifiers and beyond in various track and field events. Massapequa Track and Field has really blossomed this season.

Boys Basketball BY BEN SKLAR

It is fair to say that the Massapequa Basketball Chiefs have come out with a chip on their shoulder this year. With only returning five players from last year, they have dropped down into conference II, and it seems they have not gotten the respect they deserve. A 13-5 (10-3 conference) record has put them in second place behind undefeated Port Washington. C o a c h Voigt has been pleased with the way that the season has gone, but realizes there is still room for improvement. Although the Chiefs lost their first game on December 4, it was a great starting point to the season—“We lost to Walt Whitman on a ‘buzzer beater three.’

Boys Swimming BY MIKE COOKE STAFF WRITER

This winter the Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving season began with a bang—literally. The team’s season looked promising when the gun sounded for the first time at the boy’s meet against Bethpage on December 3.
