The Covid-19 Pandemic Sweeps Massapequa High School BY MACKENZIE WHITE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

No one could predict the new way of life that was going to come with COVID-19. The virus came fast and spread everywhere. Everyone in the world has been affected by COVID-19. For Massapequa High School, that started with the closing of the school. Massapequa School District experienced what is now known as their last day of school, on Friday, March 13, 2020. After that, the school transitioned into an online learning environment. Students at MHS are fortunate enough to have Chromebooks assigned to them that they were able to take home and make the at-home learning a little easier. However, this was not the way that students were looking to end the school year. “Like a winter snow day, it was unique and different at first, but soon became tiresome,” said Mr. Conboy, Massapequa’s former principal, about how he saw a change in morale with students. However, he also explained the newfound respect he had for his staff and students as he watched them step up to this new level of maturity that was needed to live through a pandemic. The staff of MHS was just as affected as the students. Staff pulled together to try and create the best virtual learning environment for their students despite many having family concerns of their going on which required their time and attention.has been a

“ It has been a balancing act by all involved, “ said Mr. Conboy. On the other hand, the seniors of the class of 2020 irrefutably felt the hardest loss of anyone. These students had the remainder of their senior year stolen from them by something that was totally out of their control. MHS did everything they could to make the year special for these students. MHS put out signs on the lawn displaying the names of all 2020 graduates thanks to the donations of some students’ parents. MHS was also able to host a graduation for the students at Tobay Beach. Students arrived in their cars with their families, when their name was called they walked across the stage where they received their diplomas. The devoted staff worked all summer trying to come up with a virtual learning system for students. However, with everyone’s life changing so drastically it was difficult to set up a constant distance learning schedule. As we come into a new school year, a lot of time and effort has been put into the new hybrid learning environment. Students have been online since March and are now finally getting the opportunity to come back to school. This new hybrid schedule translates into students coming into school for two days and then being online for two days. The days alternate during the week and students are split based on students’ last name. MHS hopes that school can slowly start to get back normal. As of right now, students will be returning

to school full time on October 19th. The number of cases in our districs has remained low and the board has voted for this to be a safe return. Desk shields and masks will be staying for the forseeable future but students are excited to be back at school with everyone.

Even though a lot of people utilized mail-in ballots to prevent being at risk for COVID-19, they were not the easiest to count, and some states, especially Nevada, had a very long vote-counting process that tested the patience of Americans during the election. Donald Trump, after the election results came in, declared that there is a good possibility of voter fraud because many votes have been uncalled for from what he could see throughout the election process. On November 7th, 2020, after days of a close voter turnout, Joe Biden was declared President-Elect of the United States by media outlets. The election was very tense, with not only the popular vote constantly shifting between both candidates, but the electoral college votes clashing multiple times along the process. This election had its hand in making November 3 to November 7 a very stressful and suspenseful few days in the minds and hearts of Americans across the nation, and even landed itself very public importance in many other countries around the globe. The swing states were a particularly difficult group of states to get results from, as the values of red and blue votes overlapped frequently. Donald Trump ended up taking home the majority vote of North Carolina, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. Joe Biden, however, won Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and New

Hampshire. States like Pennsylvania and Nevada were especially pivotal victories because they fluctuated in votes many times throughout the election process, but winning those states meant an almost immediate victory for Biden. The Electoral College was also very conflicted, as at the beginning of the election Donald Trump and Joe Biden were neck and neck. As the days went on, however, Biden started climbing in Electoral Votes, and on November 7, Biden recieved over 270 votes, winning the title of President-Elect. Currently, Biden holds a total of 290 electoral votes to his name, while Trump has 214, and the number has stayed that way for days. The multitude of votes required to finalize the results of the 2020 election was very tight in numbers, but overall the election was in Joe Biden’s favor. But even though Biden’s 2020 campaign proved successful, the victory came at a cost. However, mail-in ballots posed a drawback for some aspects of the elec-

Ever since the pandemic had sparked, there has been a heated debate on whether or not masks should be worn to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Many individuals find masks essential because of the safety and comfort it provides them knowing they are protecting others from the virus. However, there are a number of people that refute that theory and do not like the idea of wearing masks because the evidence is not certain that masks reduce the spread of COVID-19. Either way, there is still a controversial divide between pro-mask and anti-mask individuals that seems to grow each day, and this article will explore each side’s reasoning. On one hand, there are the people that believe masks should be worn and push the usage of them in public settings. The main reason why many individuals favor masks is that they provide a layer of safety that has the possibility of lowering the risk of contamination. If someone was infected with COVID-19, they would spread this through the respiratory droplets that come out of their mouth when they do things such as speak, cough, etc. So, the masks are recommended by the World Health Organization, or WHO, because they act as a shield or barrier that prevents those respiratory droplets from leaving your mouth far enough to spread into the air. Therefore, people consider face-coverings very important. Nobody wants to get the virus and deal with its painful symptoms, and a lot of people believe that taking any measure, such as wearing these protective coverings, to steer clear from contamination is not only important but essential. Lots of people end up wearing masks, whether it be medical-grade or cloth, because of the safe-

debates. Many say if you are going to wear a mask in public, a cotton one with straps around the ears and medical-grade masks with straps around the ears are the “so-called” safest ones, and the bandana style ones that wrap around your neck are deemed not effective for spreading contaminated particles into the air and then there are people who think that no mask at all is the way to go. How do you feel? Are you putting on your mask tomorrow, or are you leaving without it?

Back in March, when COVID-19 became a started to take over the world, there was a tremendous amount of people not wearing masks in public settings. Despite spending almost 4 months inside, many people didn’t prioritize masks. An article recently came out about people who are anti-mask explaining their reasoning. Many people say that the mask is just “too much” and for some people, the mask is “uncomfortable” and “not effective.” For many, the mask is hard to breathe in, especially high quality, medical-grade masks along with 3 layer cotton masks. Many videos have gone viral of people in public around the world not wearing masks and many people having meltdowns when confronted about their lack of a mask, stating “masks do not provide clean air so is not wearing a mask the same thing as wearing a mask. The mask debate still stands, and most likely will be around as long as COVID-19 is around. Many people have decided whether or not to wear a mask based upon their political party. This has also caused social uproar in the media. Although there have been many studies showing the pros and cons of wearing masks in public, there are some masks that are better than others when it comes to

EDITOR IN CHIEF This unprecedented time has presented many problems for people over the last few months, one of the problems students at Massapequa might be facing is finding places to go in their free time. With so many places being closed or at limited capacity it’s difficult to find somewhere for groups to go, but it is definitely not impossible. First, we have somewhere right here in our own town, the Massapequa Preserve. This preserve has a path where one can walk, run, bike, etc. The forest overlooks a reservoir which is home to many swans and geese. The Massapequa Reservoir is a popular spot for shoreline fishing however Nassau County does have restrictions for black bass fish.. The preserve provides an outdoor environment that is the perfect place to spend time during Covid-19. Tickets are anywhere from $7-$12 and include a tour of the mansion itself, access to the outdoor grounds, and activities they may offer. Some of the best ones for this time include outdoor concerts, horticultural workshops, garden tours, and much more. Overall, this period we are living through is one that no one could have imagined. The lack of ideas and activities is one that has stumped the minds of many of the students here at MHS. We hope this list helps you the next time you are looking for a place to spend your time.

There is the ASL club, SADD, Best Buddies, Mock Trial and of course The Chief to name a few. Mrs. Lowell is so excited to see these clubs do their work in our school and community. Lowell also expresses her enthusiasm in “giving this year a chance” although it is not what everyone has

New Changes | Welcoming Ms. Lowell as the new principal

MACKENZIE WHITE // THE CHIEF

While 2020 has been a crazy year to say the very least, it is with great pleasure to open up the 2020-2021 school year with positive change. Faculty and students expect many changes as this school year brings new opportunities after months of uncertainty. Notably, one of our biggest changes this year in our MHS community is the arrival of our new Principal, Mrs. Barbara Lowell. After graduating from Massapequa High School, Lowell went on to become a substitute teacher in 1996 right after college and later served as Dean of Students in Berner Middle School. Mrs. Lowell is excited about the change in scenery after working in the Berner for some time now. She has gotten the opportunity to see many recognizable students grow into their interests and maturity. Already knowing many of the faculty and staff has given her the upper hand in navigating Massapequa High School. After working with the middle school students, Mrs. Lowell understands that this is the time to become more

goal-oriented and a time of making important decisions will affect the rest of our lives as students and beyond, whatever that may bring. Although this school year has already proven itself to be troublesome and with its hardships and challenges, our principal tries to convey the power of positivity through all situations. She utilizes the quote “Don’t count the days, make the days count!” to remember the vast number of ways an optimistic outlook can change a situation. There is an underlying hope that the real highlights of highschool may be experienced during such an unprecedented time while maintaining a safe environment for all students. Falling into a practical routine is made nearly impossible this year, but Mrs. Lowell reminds us, “MHS is a fun and exciting place, you can feel its power in the hallways and classrooms and now, even on Google meets! The faculty and staff are great and the students are what it is all about. The COVID-19 pandemic has not changed any of that!” Although things like pep

dreamed of, especially for seniors. Sometimes something different can open your horizons to new opportunities and give new insight to experiences. Being a high school student means that as a student body, there is the opportunity for great accomplishments in the near future and our principal is a great reminder of that. Being a Massapequa High School graduate herself her greatest accomplishment is becoming principal of such a wonderful school. “I am so lucky to work with such wonderful professionals here and to meet such an enthusiastic student body.” Lowell enthuses. The new addition this year to our faculty is exciting and grand, to say the least. Mrs. Lowell’s enthusiasm and new perspective should make some amazing addi tions to our 20202021 school year.

While being trapped inside for months many people resorted to watching movies and television to cure their boredom. Since movie theaters have been shut down, all the movies that were supposed to come out in theaters were put onto demand for half price. Later on, as things started to open up, the prices rose again. On August 28, 2020, people all around the world sobered up after they caught news of the sudden passing of actor Chadwick Boseman. In mourning, we remembered seeing him on the silver screen throughout the 2010s as Jackie Robinson, James Brown, and most renowned, Marvel’s Black Panther. Boseman portrayed Black Panther in several Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, inspiring many young people of color, especially Black children, to embrace their cultures and reinforce the notion of respecting other cultures that may seem different to ours. He starred in Black Panther and explained how he didn’t “think the world was ready for a ‘Black Panther’ movie before this moment. Socially and politically, it wasn’t ready for it.” In interviews about Black Panther, Boseman described how difficult it is for most African Americans to connect with their culture since most of them

have foggy ancestral ties. He expressed his own[a] difficulties in this matter. Earlier in his life, he said he would have connected more with the antagonist of the movie who was so desperate to be a part of his family that he would hurt people to attain it. But, after researching his lineage along with a bit of soul searching, he was able to connect with Black Panther and find himself and settle into his niche of African American culture. Nonetheless, the feature exploded into an international movement of people appreciating the African culture displayed in the film which boosted Boseman higher in the movie industry. The iconic phrase “Wakanda Forever” from Black Panther was repeated throughout the world for months after the movie’s release. His intensely captivating sequences earned him many awards and nominations including an MTV Movie Award, a People’s Choice Award, and an NAACP Image Award.
