Valedictorian Talia Cartafalsa ready to succeed at Roanoke BY RYAN PAGANO MANAGING EDITOR
High school is filled with great opportunities for students to gain lifelong friendships and memories while also preparing for their future studies. Senior Talia Cartafalsa has accomplished that while simultaneously going above and beyond throughout her high school career. Taking advantage of every opportunity available has allowed Talia to have a very successful high school career, with a GPA of 100.125. After making the most of her time at MHS, Talia plans on continuing her academic journey at Roanoke College, where she plans to major in environmental science. There were many fac-
tors that would play a role in Talia’s college decision, however, one of the main reasons she decided to choose Roanoke was its location. “I grew up visiting Roanoke [the city] because that’s where a lot of my mom’s family lives, so I always knew I loved the area,” Talia said. “Then when it came time to start looking at colleges, I looked more into Roanoke College’s campus and programs and it ended up being a good fit for me. I am excited to be a part of the school, but I am also very excited to be living in a new place and near family.” Throughout her high school career, Talia has had the opportunity to take many classes, but a few of those classes that stand out as her fa-
vorites include AP Language, AP Literature, and AP “The two English classes [AP Language and AP Literature] I loved because my teacher was absolutely awesome, and I really felt like I was learning something by doing the analysis, reading, and writing we worked on,” Talia said. “AP Environmental Science was also a great class because we got to learn about a lot of real world problems and solutions while also doing some work outside.” She has also been involved with various clubs throughout her time at MHS, including the French Club, French Honor Society, National Honor Society, Science Research Club, and the Tech and Stage Crew. Her involvement
with those clubs hasn’t prevented Talia from challenging herself every year by signing up for demanding AP courses. She has taken a total of 11 AP classes in her high school career. These include AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Comparative Government, AP Environmental Science, AP French, AP Language, AP Literature, AP Physics 1 and 2, AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP U.S. History, and AP World History. While Talia is ecstatic to continue her academic journey at Roanoke College in the fall, she will never forget her time as a MHS student. “I know a lot of people can’t say the same, so I feel fortunate in being able to say
that I truly enjoyed going to school every day,” Talia said. “I think the sense of community I was able to build with my teachers and peers in classes and extracurriculars was really special and I am very thankful for it. I am of course extremely disappointed that our senior year didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but I do take comfort in being able to look back on very positive memories at MHS.” There is no doubt that with her impressive grades and various academic accolades, Talia is set for a successful college career. We wish nothing but the best of luck to Talia in her future studies and beyond.
Salutatorian Alexa Mangione seeks success at St. Johns BY BILLY BOYE LAYOUT EDITOR
The times of high school are times that should never be forgotten. And although the class of 2020’s times were shorter and less eventful than most, that has not stopped one senior from going above and beyond. Senior Alexa Mangione has managed to earn the title of Salutatorian, while also achieving exemplary grades. The premature end of senior year was a sad event for many, but not Al-
exa. Rather than dwell on what happened, Alexa decided to better herself and learn more about herself during these unprecedented times. “With our year getting cut short, and missing out on a lot of events, it’s hard to feel closure in the traditional sense.” Alexa said. “Because of this, I’ve started reflecting on this year, and all those preceding it, on my own terms.” This reflection brought her to some important realizations about
“…the relationships I cultivated with the people I saw every day. I re-evaluated how I treated others, and during this time in isolation, I have interacted more frequently and in a more conscious manner.” Alexa also hopes that the MHS family can “be motivated to make the college years (or whatever path one is on after high school) ahead of us memorable.” Throughout her years as an MHS student, Alexa has received various
accolades for her academic achievements. As for her immediate future, Alexa plans to attend St. John’s University in the Fall as an Information Technology major. “I hope to be very involved in the community and do as much volunteer work as possible.” Alexa said.
The Chief wishes nothing but the best for Alexa in her college years and beyond.

THE CHIEF
To my fellow seniors, As I write this letter to all of you, a part of me is left speechless. Speechless because I still cannot believe that our senior year has come to this. Quarantined at home for months, learning through a computer screen, and wearing masks in public. We walked out of Massapequa High School not knowing it was our last time, and my heart breaks thinking about it. These unprecedented times have allowed me to realize just how precious life is, and we do not know what moments we have until they are gone. The Class of 2020 will go down in history as one of the most memorable graduating classes ever, and I would not want to go through these obstacles with any other class. We truly do signify what a chief stands for: being leaders in times of uncertainty. Senioritis, as we know, is what fills our heads in the last weeks of school. I think I can speak for many of you, that we are definitely not feeling that urge right now. Many of us wish we can go back to normal. Where we can sit at desks, take notes, eat the delicious cookies the cart lady supplies for us, and walk to town bagel on our free periods. Instead, we are seeing our teachers for the first time in weeks on facetime, questioning when we can all be together again, and unfortunately, it will not be for a long time. I Sabrina Alberti believe that with hope, we can look forward to bringing our tassels from the right to the Editor-in-Chief 2019-2020 left, as one strong, united senior class in August. We are going to be spending our next four years in different places, experiencing different things, and learning new lessons that will set us up for success in the near future. Two things that will never change are where we came from and the difficulties we went through together this year. Always remember where you came from, your hometown of Massapequa, and your roots will always keep you grounded. All the best, Sabrina Alberti Editor in Chief 2019-2020 “My roots always keep me grounded Roots, remind me where I’m from Even when I’m a thousand miles away from my roots I’m home” -Zac Brown Band
To my fellow peers, It is hard to believe that this would be the way that our senior year would come to a close. It still tears at my heart thinking about it, especially because none of us knew that when we walked out of school on March 13, it would be our last day together as MHS students. We never would have imagined our senior year ending in quarantine, and unfortunately, that is the harsh reality that we are all forced to accept. But nonetheless, it is still important that we look back upon all the unforgettable memories and lifelong friendships that we have made during our time as high school students. Being at home and quarantined for over two months now, this has made me realize that I’ve been taking certain things for granted. Dealing with and accepting reality throughout the ongoing pandemic has taught me that life is too short. It has also taught me that we must never take anything for granted, because you never know if there are any unforeseen circumstances that will suddenly intervene in our lives. As I watch replays of baseball and hockey games from years and decades past on most nights, I always happen to reflect upon the memories and passions that I have gained throughout high school. I’ve found that by being involved with the Broadcasting Club by Ryan Pagano playing and broadcasting music and by being involved with the school newspaper. Many of my best high school memories have come from being with The Chief, as it has helped Managing Editor 2019-2020 me find a passion for writing articles for all of you to enjoy. It is unbelievable how many memories that I have made throughout my time with The Chief, whether it would be going to Unqua to introduce 5th grade students to journalism, winning various awards at Adelphi University’s Quill Awards, or attending various workshops and learning new journalism techniques at Columbia University’s Fall Conference. I am forever thankful to have been part of The Chief, and having the opportunity to write articles for the whole school is an experience that I will never forget. I would love to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped shape me into the person I am today. Thank you to my teachers, friends, and family for always being there for me. Thank you Mr. Mulholland, WMHS, and the Broadcasting Club for all the memories that we have made by playing music and broadcasting it with such a great group of people. Thank you Ms. Lindo and all staff members of The Chief, past and present, for helping me find my passion for writing and for pushing me to become the best writer I can be. However, this letter would not be complete without thanking the Class of 2020. Each and every single one of you has made a positive contribution to my high school experience. Regardless of the way that our senior year ended, you all will forever have a special place in my heart, and I am eternally grateful to have graduated with all of you. Wishing you all the best, Ryan Pagano Managing Editor 2019-2020

OP-ED
THE CHIEF
To the class of 2020, Congratulations! You have finally made it through high school and are ready to start a new and exciting chapter of your lives. I will always remember the mix of emotions that I felt during this time period; the pride of turning in my final assignments, the gut-wrenching goodbyes to some of my favorite teachers and classmates, the fear of everything around me suddenly changing, and even the uncertainty of the future ahead of me. I cannot even begin to imagine how much the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted these feelings for all of you and how it has changed the pathways you expected to take after high school. The transition from high school to college is no easy feat, and the fact that all of you have continued to keep your spirits high in light of the situation is a testament to your immense strength and character. Although the virus might have changed some of your plans a little earlier than expected, change is not an uncommon part of life. In many ways the pandemic has helped give all of Michael Riggi you a headstart on how to overcome some obstacles that will appear later on in life and has made Editor-in-Chief 2018-2019 you more prepared to tackle the world than ever before. Whether it be maneuvering through the switch to online learning or adjusting to the new norm of social distancing, 2020 has shapen up to be an unimaginably trying year. It is in the midst of these difficult times that you have proven to be one of the most resilient groups of students that have ever walked through the halls of MHS. From door decorations to social media movements and everything else in between, the class of 2020 continues to make their voices heard across the community and keep the spirit of a true Chief intact. The impact of your graduating class will certainly continue to be felt for years to come. I know this milestone for the class of 2020 looks nothing like all of you expected and for that I am truly saddened. Even though the celebration of this milestone may look different for you, it in no way lessens the achievements you have made. The Massapequa and Long Island communities will continue to celebrate each and everyone of you in unique ways and ensure that all of your hard work has not gone unnoticed. The whole world is watching the class of 2020 and this is your time to show them what you are made of. I am certain that all of you will continue to make history and I am excited to see where your paths take you in the future. Congratulations on your very wellearned graduation and I wish you all the best of luck moving forward! Best Wishes, Michael Riggi
On behalf of The Chief staff, we want to thank MHS Class of 2020 advisor, Mrs. Nicole Zappulla for organizing the Adopt a Chief Facebook Page, parents and students for posting, and parents, teachers, staff and friends for participating. It brought so many students joy and unforgettable memories during this unprecedented time.
IN LOVING MEMORY
Mrs. Roxanne Minerva Monitor
