?deport for Oe Dear 1909--1910.

DURING the past year an important change has taken place in the relation to the University of Women Students in Oxford. By the Statute establishing a Women's Delegacy and a consequent Decree, the existing College and Halls for Women and the Society of Oxford Home Students were formally recognised. St. Hugh's Hall is now a recognised Society, and three members of the Council, the Principal of St. Hugh's Hall, Miss Rogers, and Mrs. Fisher are members of the Delegacy. The question of the Incorporation of St. Hugh's Hall has been before the Council this year. An anonymous friend has most generously given the expenses of incorporation, and though the legal formalities are not yet completed, it is hoped that before long St. Hugh's Hall will be incorporated and will be known in the future as St. Hugh's College. There will be eighteen elected members on the Council, nine of whom will be elected at a general meeting of the members of the College, and old students who have fulfilled certain conditions of residence and examination will be inscribed as members of the College with power to vote at general meetings, on payment of an annual subscription of 5/- or of a sum for life-membership of ÂŁ3 10s. Od. It is hoped that old students will take up their membership and thus be brought more closely into touch with the Council. It is with very great regret that we record the resignation of three members of the Council. The Rev. Sir John Hawkins was the first Chairman of St. Hugh's

Hall Council (1891-1894) and has been in connection with it for over twenty years. Mr. Prickard was also one of the first members of the Council, and for many years gave his help on the Library Committee. Our warm thanks are due to them both for their unfailing kindness and interest extended to the Hall through so long a period. The appointment of the Rev. William Temple to be Headmaster of Repton has deprived us of another member, and we much regret that distance from Oxford prevents him as well as Mr. Prickard from remaining on the Council of the College. A committee of St. Hugh's Council, on which representatives of the Hall were co-opted, had been considering for some time the possibility of acquiring the lease of a boat house. This has now been arranged, and St. Hugh's Hall is in possession of a lease of the Middle Cherwell Boat house, which is rented from St. John's College. As the numbers of students grow, some arrangement for housing a larger number of boats becomes a necessity for the Boat Club. During this year the Library has been sifted and classified and a new subject catalogue has been compiled. The Library provides most of the books a student needs during the earlier stages of her work ; and through the regular Council grant, is enabled to grow slowly but steadily. Ninety-six volumes were bought this year. The chief gifts came from Sir John Hawkins, Mr. Cronshaw, Miss Wardale, Miss Deneke, Signor Coscia, Mrs. Fisher, an, and Mr. Miss Barber, Miss Dobbs, and Miss Herdm Brierley. The Sidgwick Prize for Greek Prose was won in 1909 by Miss Gordon, and the Sidgwick Prize for Latin Prose in 1910 by Miss Linton. Twelve students took their Final Honour Examination in June, 1910. Of these Miss Irwin obtained a First in History, being the only woman thus distinguished that year, and Miss Talbot a First in Zoology. Miss Godwin and Miss Nott had Seconds in History, Miss Ramsay and Miss Wildy in English, Miss Dobbs and Miss Herdman in French, and Miss Barber in German.

Miss Linton took a Second in March, 1910, in Honour Moderations, and is staying on to read for Literae Humaniores. Miss Edwards had a Third in Honour Moderations, Miss Lindsay iu History, Miss Davis and Miss Willans in English. Miss Potter has been appointed Headmistress of the Plymouth High School. Miss Ramsay Lecturer at Aberdeen University. Miss Irwin received a Bursary at the Cambridge Training College, and Miss Barber at St. Mary's, Paddington. Miss Davis is taking the Oxford Training Course. Other recent appointments are— Miss Dobbs, Assistant Mistress, Redland High School. Queen Mary's School, Walsall. do. Miss Crump, Redland High School. Miss G. Hamilton do. St. Anne's, Abbot's Bromley. Miss Lindsay, do. Girls' Grammar School, do. Miss Roechling, Berkhamsted. Endowed School, Stroud. do. Miss Robinson, Clifton High School. Miss Penny, do. The new scholars are Miss D. Ibberson (French), Old Students' Scholar, Redland High School ; Miss M. Shaw (English), Hall Scholar, Uplands School, St. Leonard's-onSea.
