REPORT OF THE June 1919 —May,

COUNCIL, 192o.

The ninth General Meeting of the College was held on June 21st, 1919. Miss ADY was re-elected a member of the Council, and Mr. NICEIOL SMITH and Miss TALBOT were elected as new members. At the Council Meeting on the same day Miss GRAY ALLEN, Mr. BURROWS, and Miss M. VENABLES were re-elected. It was with very great regret that the Council accepted the resignation of Mr. BAYNES and Professor W. 0. S. ADAMS. Mr. BAYNES' long connection with the College and the expert help he gave as Treasurer from 1902 to 1905, and to the Finance Committee till 1919. make his loss in the deliberations of the College one that is greatly felt. Professor ADAMS too, though obliged during the war to absent himself from Oxford, has always had the interests of the College at heart, and his resignation is greatly regretted. The Council welcome the co-operation of Mr. Thcnot. SMITH, and of Miss TALBOT, the latter a former student of the College. In the course of the year the Council also received with regret the resignation of Mr. HAMILTON FYFE on his appointment to Christ's Hospital. Mr. HAMILTON FYFE has given very valuable assistance on the Scholarship Committee. The Council have co-opted in his stead Mr. DYSON PERRINS, Hon. D.C.L. At the Scholarship Examination held in conjunction with Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville College, 116 candidates sent in applications to St. Hugh's College. The following awards were made:— The Old Students' Scholarship, £35, to Miss E. M. STRONG, Moorfield, Plymouth (English). A College Scholarship of £25 to Miss D. ROGERS, Clifton High School (History). An Exhibition of £20 to Miss G. M. SHARPE, Ladies College; Cheltenham (Mathematics). •

8 An Honorary Exhibition was awarded to Miss V. E. MISKIN, Bournemouth High School (History). Bursaries were afterwards awarded to Miss CAreous, Monmouth High School (French), and to Miss M. HUDSON (French). In 1920 there were 146 applications, and the following awards were made :— A Scholarship of £25 a year for three years to P. LOVETT, Mortimer House, Clifton (History). A Scholarship of £25 a year for three years to J. L. M. DICK, St. Mary Hall, Brighton (French). An Exhibition of £20 a year for three years to M. DALGLEISH, Liverpool College, Huyton (English). An Exhibition of £20 a year for three years to R. J. MITCHELL, Dorchester School (History). Miss M. K B. SHAW, B.A., Lond., former Scholar of St. Hugh's College, First Class Honour School of French Language and Literature, Gilchrist Student, recently Assistant Lecturer at Sevres, and at the Royal Holloway College, has been appointed a Tutor in French, and came into residence in October, 1919. The number of Students in the course of the year rose to 103, 73 of whom are accommodated in the College building. The Council acquired 4 St. Margaret's Road, which was opened in Michelmas Term, 1919, and occupied by 9 Students, mainly those in their fourth year, Miss ADY being Tutor in charge of the house. The rest of the Students reside in private houses near the College. During the year the Council has considered the question of the future development of the College, and the possibilities of expansion. A questionnaire has been received from the Royal Commission on Universities, identical with that sent to all the Colleges in Oxford and Cambridge, and the information desired about the past history and present position. of the College has been supplied. Although the high price of livino• has caused some 6 anxiety to those responsible for the administration of the College, and hds necessitated the raising of fees to £120 per annum for all Students coming into residence in October,

9 1920, the Council look forward with confidence to the increasing development of women's education in Oxford, and to the part that will be taken in this by St. Hugh's College. The passing of the Preamble to the Statute admitting women to membership of the University, gives hope that the conditions of this work in the future will be on lines which will" further general educational development within and outside Oxford. • The Statute (which will probably pass Convocation in the course of Trinity Term) will not come into operation till October.
