ST. HUGH'S COLLEGE.

The College was founded in 1886 by Miss ELIZABRTH under the title of St. Hugh's Hall. It was recognised from its foundation as an independent institution by the Association for the Education of Women in Oxford, and in 1888 its Principal, with the Principals of Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville Hall, became members of the Council of that body. In 1891 St. Hugh's Hall was placed under the management of a Council: it was constituted under a Deed of Trust in 1894, and incorporated in 1911 under the Companies' (Consolidation) Act (1908) under the title of St. Hugh's College. REPORT OF THE COUNCIL, June 1915 —May 1916.

THE fifth General Meeting of the College took place on Friday, June 18th, 1915, when Miss MOBERLY was elected a member of Council, and Miss WARDALE and Mr. HAMILTON FYFE were re-elected. The President proposed the creation of the office of Honorary Vice-President of the College, and the meeting having assented to this, he moved that Miss WORDSWORTH and Miss MOBERLY be asked to accept the position. This was unanimously agreed to. The Council met after the General Meeting and re-elected Miss ROGERS, Mr. NAGEL, and Miss PowiLL as Members of Council ; while to fill two interim vacancies Miss GRAY ALLEN and Mrs. PERKIN were elected. The Council have received with regret the resignation of the Honorary Secretary, Miss A. D. GREENWOOD, who has given great help to the College during the years 19121916, and has most efficiently organised the secretarial work in connection with the Student members. The Council wish to express their gratitude for the time and labour so willingly given to the College during her tenure of the Secretaryship. The Council have also received with regret the resignation of Miss E G. POWELL, and record their appreciation of her generous help during the progress of the new buildings. It was hoped at the end of Trinity Term, 1915, that the new building would be ready for occupation in October. Of the four houses then occupied by St. Hugh's College, the furnished house at 18 Bradmore Road was given up, and the house at 17 Norham Gardens sold, while the College furniture was stored for the time in 28 Norham Gardens and 13 Fyfield Road. In September, 1915, as only a

•

8 small portion of the College buildings was likely to be ready for occupation in October, the Building Committee recommended that Wycliffe Hall should be rented for Michaelmas Term, and that 28 Norham Gardens should also be used for students. Miss Thomas undertook to be responsible for the housekeeping in the latter house. At the end of Michaelmas Term, 1915, the College furniture was transferred to the new buildings, which were ready for occupation in Hilary Term, though the Chapel and Library, entrance hall and staircase, with the adjoining rooms, were still unfinished. The Council gratefully recognise the efforts made by the architect and the contractor to meet them in every way, and appreciate the beauty and collegiate character of the building. A Garden Committee has been formed to arrange for the planning and management of the garden, which offers great possibilities. A Committee for the internal arrangement of the Chapel has been formed, and several presents in money towards a fund for its decoration have already been received. A gift of 252 volumes has been received for the Library, from the collection of the late Miss Clara Evelyn Mordan. Two portraits of Miss Mordan have been given to the College by her wish ; one is being placed in the Library, which is to be called by her name. A table and sideboard for the dining-hall have been kindly presented by Miss Gray Allen. The numbers in College have been steadily rising, in spite of the uncertainty of war conditions, and the Council looks forward with confidence to the future development of St. Hugh's in its new surroundings.
