REPORT FOR THE YEAR

1904-1905.

THE Hall has had a very great loss this year in the death of its Chairman, Mr. Thompson. Ever since June, 1898, when he accepted the post, his warm interest in all that concerned St. Hugh's, and the trouble he took on its account, have been unfailing. His many other activities in Oxford never prevented him from attending the Scholarship Committees, both here and in conjunction with Lady Margaret Hall, and he took the chief part in the election of our scholars. The Council of Lady Margaret Hall, in a letter to the Council of St. Hugh's Hall, spoke of Mr. Thompson's " sound and impartial judgment " as having been " a real help to the cause of women's education in Oxford." We at St. Hugh's may also speak of the help to us of his personal sympathy and support so readily given and so fully appreciated.

.

We are happy to say that Dr. Bigg, Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History, has consented to join the Council as Chairman, and Mrs. Thompson has been kind enough to accept the office of Secretary to the Council. The Clara Evelyn Mordan Scholarship was awarded this year to Miss F. M. Knipe, from the Edgbaston High School, and the Hall Scholarship was won by Miss E. M. Duggan, St. Margaret's, Bushey. Miss Knipe is reading for the honour School of English Language and Literature, and Miss Duggan for Mathematical Moderations. This year's class lists shew the satisfactory result of a First in English (Miss Eppstein, scholar), two Seconds in History (Miss Tew, scholar, and Miss Wilson), and a Second in Natural Science (Miss Rogers, scholar) ; four Third Classes in History, English, and Modern Languages, and one Fourth in Natural Science, complete the list. We must also mention that Miss Potter has gained the English prize, this being the fourth year in succession in which an English prize has been awarded to a St. Hugh's student.

4 Miss Sparks' appointment to the High School at Wisbech adds another Headmistress-ship to our list. The other appointments made this year are as follows :Miss Dawson, Assistant Mistress, St. Anne's School, Abbots Bromley. Miss Eppstein, Assistant Mistress, Godolphin School, Salisbury. Miss Johnston, Assistant Mistress, County School, Ramsgate. Miss Rogers, Assistant Mistress, Lewisham Grammar School. Miss Shuttleworth, Training College, Brighton. Miss Tew, Assistant Mistress, High School, Swansea. Miss Vaux, Assistant Mistress, Technical School,Trowbridge. Miss Webb, Assistant Mistress, High School, Upper Batley. Of our former students, Miss Cunynghame has taken her Teacher's Training Diploma, Miss Edith Snowdon completed her B.A. course, and Miss Sparks has taken the ad eundem B.A. degree at Trinity College, Dublin. The Library Report records the fact that the Library now consists of more than 2,000 volumes, the result of careful choice and consideration on the part of the Committee. Of these volumes, 76 have been bought this year, and 118 presented. Miss Wardale and Mr. Deneke have given donations. Lady Laura Ridding has presented 20 volumes from the Library of the late Bishop of Southwell, and Mrs. Thompson 69 books which had formerly belonged to Mr. Thompson. All these books are valuable additions to the Library. A most generous gift received for the Library, but not for the purchase of books, has been spent in re-painting and decorating, and adding to the bookshelves. To our great regret Mr. Prickard, who has most kindly attended Library Committees for the past eight years, resigned this year on account of his absence from Oxford, and Mrs. Fisher was appointed Representative of the Council in his place,
