REPORT FOR THE YEAR

1903-1904.

THIS year has been a year of progress in more than one direction. First, in the giving of a Scholarship of £30 for three years by the old students, a gift which we welcome not only for its intrinsic value, but even more as a sign of the interest of its donors in the development of the Hall. Another important event has been that Miss Jourdain has taken her degree as Doctor of the University of Paris this year. The increasing numbers in the Hall have made it necessary to separate the post of Librarian from that of Vice-Principal, and Miss Deneke, one of our most distinguished students, has returned to fill the ne4k post. The result of the Scholarship examination has been as follows :—Old Students' Scholar, Miss Mary Ottley, from the Baker Street High School. Hall Scholar, Miss Gwendolen Watson, from the North London Collegiate School. Ottley Scholar, Miss Gertrude Hough, from the Worcester High School. Miss Shuttleworth has justified her election as the first Ottley Scholar, and the extension of her Scholarship to a fourth year, by gaining a First Class in the Final School in Geology. Miss Crick and Miss Johnston were placed in the Second Class in History ; Miss Hales in the Third Class in English ; Miss Ludwig and Miss Vaux in the Fourth Class in History and in English respectively ; Miss Eppstein (Clara Evelyn Mordan Scholar) won the Junior English Prize of the Association for the Education of Women. Miss Prideaux and Miss Batchelor have passed the Examination held by the Delegates for the Training of Teachers in Oxford in the course of this year, and Miss Prideaux and Miss Woodhouse have also gained their Diploma.

4 Of the nine Students who left College this summer, four have returned home, not intending to teach. Miss Johnston and Miss Vaux are going through a Teachers' Training Course, Miss Johnston having the Clothworkers' Scholarship at the Maria Grey College. Miss Ludwig is assistant mistress at the Newbury High School ; Miss Crick is acting temporarily as secretary to Mrs. Sidney Webb ; and Miss Shuttleworth has been invited to return to Oxford for research work at the Museum. Several foreigners have been in residence at St. Hugh's during the year for short periods. Mesdemoiselles Monnier and Bruneton have left. Miss Carlson, from Sweden (the friend of a former Swedish student) is here, and also a Russian student, who proposes to take the whole course and read for Jurisprudence. Though still closely connected with the Hall as English Tutor, it is with great regret that we lose Miss Wardale from our second house, the responsibility of which she has undertaken since its opening. Her place at 28, Norham Gardens has been taken by Miss Deneke. The Library is increasing greatly. Over 140 volumes have been added to it this year, presents having been given by the Chairman, the Warden of Keble, Sir John Hawkins, Miss Wordsworth, Miss Rogers, Miss Wardale, Miss Lee, Miss Deneke, and several anonymous contributors. The Dictionary of National Biography is now almost complete, and the beginning of a reference library has been made in the new Common room. By the death of Mr. Wardale the Hall has lost an old friend. For many years he has been one of its Trustees, and by constant acts of kindness has shewn his interest in it.
