ST. HUGH'S COLLEGE.

The College was founded in 1886 by Miss ELIZABETH under the title of St. Hugh's Hall. It was recognised from its foundation as an independent institution by the Association for the Education of Women in Oxford, and in 1888 its Principal, with the Principals of Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville Hall, became members of the Council of that body. In 1891 St. Hugh's Hall was placed under the management of a Council: it was constituted under a Deed of Trust in 1894, and incorporated in 1911 under the Companies' (Consolidation) Act (1908) under the title of St. Hugh's College. On November 1st, 1910, it was recognised by Decree of Convocation. In 1915 Miss WORDSWORTH and Miss MOBERLY were made Honorary Vice-Presidents of the College. In 1920 St. Hugh's College was admitted to the privileges of a College in the University of Oxford. WORDSWORTH

REPORT OF THE COUNCIL, June, 1920—May, 1921. The tenth General Meeting of the College was held on June 19th, 1920. Miss PHILLIPS and Miss SOUTH WELL were re-elected members of Council and Miss SPEULES was elected. At the Council Meeting which followed, Mr. BRIERLY, Mr. JENKINSON, and Miss KIRKALnY were co-opted. A very great loss has befallen the College in the death of Mr. NAGEL, one of the members of the original Council, whose most valuable services to the Council for 29 years will always be remembered with gratitude. Be took the greatest interest in the development of the College on every side ; and was unfailing in his kindness to all its members, especially to his pupils. The Scholarship Committee has owed a great deal to his wise judgment and care. The library has received a gift of his books. Mr. BRIERLY, who has given generous help to the College during the years of his connection with it, has resigned his place on the Council on leaving Oxford for a Professorship at Manchester, and the Council has received his resignation with much regret. The Council is fortunate in having secured the help of the RECTOR OF LINCOLN on the Council of the College and on two of its Committees. The honorary membership of the College has been conferred on Professor W. G. S. ADAMS, Mr. R. E. BAYNES, and Mr. W. HAMILTON FYFE. The Council records with deep regret the death of a member of the Tutorial Staff, Mrs. HAVERFIELD, who had been Tutor in Mathematics since 1911, and whose loyal co-operation on the staff will be greatly missed. A bequest of books has been received from her library, and from that of the late Professor HAVERFIELD. Tee news of the death of a former Tutor, Miss E. M. THOMAS, has been received with great sorrow. Miss THOMAS' devotion to her College, both as a student and Tutof, is remembered with gratitude and affection. During the past year the number of students has increased to 115, of whom 25 are living in private houses near the College. The Council acquired a short lease of

8 "The Lawn" in July, 1920, and this house was opened in Michaelmas Term for 9 students. During the sittings of the Royal Commission at Oxford in Michaelmas Term, 1920, evidence was given about the financial position of the College, and the building was inspected on behalf of the Commission. An appeal to the public for endowment, called the Women's Colleges' Appeal Fund, has been circulated on behalf of the five Societies of Women Students. The difficulty of meeting the working expenses of the College, together with heavy interest on the building debt, has made this step necessary, and the Council believes that it will be essential to raise fees in the near future, in order to make the College self-supporting. The Council has received a generous legacy of £.1000 through the will of the late Major C. S. AWDRY. Since the last Report women have been admitted to degrees and membership of the University, and through the courtesy of the VICE-CHANCELLOR and all the University officials, the necessary transition has been made without difficulty. The degree of M.A. was conferred on the PRINCIPAL by decree, and on the following senior members of the staff: Miss KIRKALDY, Miss ROGERS, MISS WARDALE, Miss Any. Two former tutors and one present tutor of the College were among the first women to take their degrees in the ordinary course, and two former students were presented for the B.Litt. Miss DAYMOND, of Holloway College and the Royal College of Music was presented for the B.Mus. and Mus. Doc. Five members of the staff: the PRINCIPAL, who had been appointed Taylorian Lecturer in French, Miss WARDALE, Miss Any, Miss SPEARING (under the Cassel Trust) and Miss SHAW, lecturer at the Taylorian, have lectured in the University this year. Miss KIRKALDY and Miss TALBOT (a former student of the College and member of the Council, who has been appointed Principal of Cherwell Hall), demonstrated for the Professor of Zoology. The " Hurry" Prize for 1920 was awarded to Miss E. E. Stopford. At the Scholarship examination in 1921 the following awards were made :— The "Clara Evelyn Mordan" Scholarship (.40) to M. J. Paterson, Cheltenham Ladies' College (Natural Science.)

9 A Scholarship of £25 to R. Volkert, Haberdashers' Aske's School, Acton (French). An " Old Students'" Exhibition of £20 to R. Brown, Sherborne School, Dorset (Natural Science).
