REPORT OF THE COUNCIL, June 1916---May 1917. The sixth General Meeting of the College took place on Saturday, June 24th, 1916, when Professor W. G. S. ADAMS, Miss ADY, and Mr. BAYNES were re-elected members of the Council. The Council met on the same day and re-elected Mr. BURROWS and Miss GRAY ALLEN, and elected Miss M. VENABLES in the place of Mrs. PERKIN who had resigned. The new building, including the Chapel and Library, was completed in Easter Term ; and on Ascension Day a Service of Dedication, together with a choral celebration of the Holy Communion, was held by the Lord Bishop of the Diocese. In the Long Vacation the lodges and garden wall were completed : and in Michaelmas Term it was possible to take a larger number of students—the College now has 70 students' rooms—and to provide more accommodation for the domestic staff. On the completion of the work, the Council offered presents to the clerk of the works and the foreman, and expressed their recognition of the good services rendered by them and the workmen. The altar and riddle posts from the former Chapel were given (with the consent of the donor, Mrs. Romoms,) to the Rev. G. STANTON, for use in a Mission Church at Warrington. The Chapel Committee were able to give the order for the organ, which is being made, though delays due to the scarcity of labour have prevented much progress in the construction. The Council has regretted the unavoidable absence for reasons of National Service of many of its members, but hopes that when more normal conditions prevail it may be able to count again on their help. During the past year the Council has organized the

8

administration of a Tuition Fund, and arranged for lectures to be given by tutors of St. Hugh's College under the scheme for a joint lecture-list, which has been drawn up by the Societies of Women Students. The Councillas also undertaken to pay 10/- instead of 1/- a term to the Delegacy for Woman Students on behalf of each Student in residence. During the " emergency " period caused by the War, the Delegacy is arranging to pay a fixed sum to the University in return for the provision of all examinations (not suspended by statute) necessary for women students. This sum is drawn from the fees above mentioned. It wishes also to record with satisfaction the opening of the English fund library at Acland House to students of the English School. The heavy expenses connected with the management of the College in time of war have been a strain on the finances, but the Council notes with pleasure the increasing number of students. The energy shewn by past and present members of the College in national work and war work of various kinds is most gratifying. The Garden Committee has been able to plan for the use of ground as kitchen garden, and to increase the number of fruit trees. The Scholarship Committee elected the following Scholars, who have come into residence :— Miss I. Sims (Derby High School), the "Old Students" Scholarship, £30 a year. Miss E. STOPFORD (Notting Hill High School), a "College" Scholarship, £25 a year. Miss F. T. PRICHARD (Clapham High School), a Bursary of £15 a year. During the leave of absence on account of health of Miss E. M. THOMAS, Miss 0. W. SINCLAIR, M.A., London (formerly of Lady Margaret Hall,) has kindly undertaken the work of Secretary and Librarian.
