ST. HUGH'S COLLEGE, OXFORD.

1918 1919.

ST. HUGH'S COLLEGE.

The College was founded in 1886 by Miss ELIZABETH under the title of St. Hugh's Hall. It was recognised from its foundation as an independent institution by the Association for the Education of Women in Oxford, and in 1888 its Principal, with the Principals of Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville Hall, became members of the Council of that body. In 1891 St. Hugh's Hall was placed under the management of a Council : it was constituted under a Deed of Trust in 1894, and incorporated in 1911 under the Companies' (Consolidation) Act (1908) under the title of St. Hugh's College. On November 1st, 1910, it was recognised by Decree of Convocation. In 1915 Miss WORDSWORTH and Miss MOBERLY were made Honorary Vice-Presidents of the College. WORDSWORTH

REPORT OF THE COUNCIL, June 1918—May 1919. The eighth General Meetina of the College was held 6 Miss MOBERLY, Miss on Saturday, June 22nd, 1918. WARDALE and Mr. HAMILTON FYFE were re-elected members of the Council. Miss ROGERS, Miss HAIG •BROWN and Mr. NAGEL were afterwards re-elected at the Council Meeting on the same day. At the Scholarship Examination held this year in combination with Somerville College and Lady Margaret Hall, 56 candidates were examined for St. Hugh's College. The following awards were made :— The "Clara Evelyn Mordan " Scholarship of £40 to Miss N. HORA, Monmouth High School (Mathematics). A Scholarship of £25 to Miss D. M. M. EDWARDS-REES, Roedean School (Modern History). Au Exhibition of £20 to Miss M. R. TOYNBEE, Winchester and Oxford High Schools (Modern History). The " Alice Ottley" close Scholarship to Miss E. N. DENTON, Alice Ottley School, Worcester (Modern History). Bursaries were subsequently awarded to Miss M. MOLLER, Clapham High School (Natural Science), to enable her to begin her course, and to Miss DOEHAERD, a Belgian student, to enable her to continue her work at Oxford. During the year the financial position of the College has been satisfactorily maintained, while the numbers of students have steadily increased. In response to a generous gift from Miss GRAY ALLEN, an increase in salaries has been made, though the scale adopted is still considerably below that contemplated as the final one. The Council has appointed a resident Assistant in English, Miss E. M. SPEARING, of Newnham College, Cambridge, who obtained a First Class in the Mediteval and Modern Languages Tripos, with distinction in English, and has since held an Assistant Lectureship at Bedford

8 College, and a Fellowship at Newnham College. During the war she was occupied in hospital work in France and in England. Miss SPEARING came into residence at St. Hugh's College in Michaelmas Term, 1918. The Council proposes, in the ensuing year, to appoint a resident Tutor in French, to carry on the Tutorial work hitherto undertaken by the Principal in addition to her other duties. Owing to the growth of the number of students in French, additional help is now needed in this subject. In Michaelmas Term , 1918, the Council learnt with regret that Miss ADY, Vice-Principal and Tutor, was obliged to be away from Oxford for the following Term, on account of illness in her family, and leave of absence was given her by the Council. Miss COLE-BAKER, formerly a student at Lady Margaret Hall, came into residence in Hilary Term, 1919, to undertake the tuition of the History students. The Council records with satisfaction a considerable increase in the number of books in the Library, which, under the present Librarian, has reached 5000 volumes. It also appreciates the work of Miss ROGERS and the Garden Committee, in the arrangements made for the up-keep and improvement of the College Grounds, and expresses its gratitude for the many gifts received. The warm thanks of the Council are also due to Dr. and Mrs. HURRY for the offer of a prize in books, to the value of ÂŁ7 10s., to be awarded each year, in memory of their daughter's residence as a student, and to the Rev. G. B. CRONSIIAW, Treasurer, for a beautiful lectern, designed by the architect of the College, which is very greatly appreciated at the Chapel Services. The year 1918, which included the anxiety caused by the German offensive in March, as well as the relief of continued victories in the early autumn, followed by the signing of the Armistice in November, has been a momentous one; and the Council records its deep thankfulness for national preservation during this and all the long years of war. It welcomes, too, the thought that several members of the Council, absent for these years on national service, will be returning to Oxford, and will renew their interest in the College.
