In 1891 St. Hugh's Hall was placed under the management of a Council: it was constituted under a Deed of Trust in 1894, and incorporated in 1911 under the Companies' (Consolidation) Act (1908) under the title of St. Hugh's College. On November 1st, 1910, it was recognised by Decree of Convocation. In 1915 Miss WORDSWORTH and Miss MOBERLY were made Honorary Vice-Presidents of the College. WORDSWORTH

REPORT OF THE COUNCIL, June 1917—May 1918. The seventh General Meeting of the College took place on Saturday, June 3rd, 1917, when Miss PHILLIPS and Miss BATCHELOR were re-elected, and Miss SOUTHWELL elected members of the Council. At the Council Meeting on the same day, Mr. BRIERLY, Mr. J ENKINSON and Miss KIRWALDY were re-elected. The Council records with satisfaction the continued increase in the number of applications for admission to the College. It has been decided to charge a uniform fee of £96 a year and, during the period of the War and of high prices for living, to ask for an additional fee of £1 per term for the Trinity Term, 1918, and £2 for each succeeding term. It has also been decided to put aside further sums for scholarships and bursaries. An additional exhibition of £20 for three years was offered for competition in 1918. Bursaries will also be awarded through the Principal, either to enable a promising candidate to enter College or to make it possible for a student already in residence to complete her course. A scheme for the more complete joint working of the Scholarship Examination at Lady Margaret Hall, Somerville College and St. Hugh's College has been under consideration. At the Scholarship Examination in 1917 the following Scholars were elected :— Miss SPURWAY, Cheltenham Ladies' College (Modern History), £35 a year for three years. Miss CLARK, Clapham High School (Modern History), £25 a year for three years.

8 The Council gratefully acknowledges generous gifts in the form of War Loan investments from Miss Hamilton, the interest from which has enabled one College Scholarship to be augmented from ÂŁ25 to ÂŁ35. Among other gifts to the College are a set of oak chairs of antique pattern for the Library and some oak furniture for the Senior Common Room, due to the generosity of a former student. Owing to the illness and resignation of Miss THOMAS, Secretary and Librarian, Miss JOAN EVANS, who obtained in 1916 the Diploma in Archaeology, was appointed acting Librarian; while Miss KATHLEEN I. HIND, formerly Secretary at the Lincoln Training College, has undertaken the secretarial work until permanent arrangements can be made. The Council has decided to appoint a resident teacher in English Literature, on account of the large number of students taking that subject, who will, it is hoped, come into residence in Michaelmas Term, 1918. The Council feels great regret at the illness of Miss THOMAS, whose help in taking charge of a house before the College moved into the new buildings, and also as Tutor in German, and as Secretary, has been much appreciated. The Organ, to the cost of which many old students have contributed as a memorial to Miss MOBERLY'S work as Principal, has been placed in the Chapel, and is a great help in the services held there. The tone of the organ is very pleasing, and the workmanship is a great credit to the makers, Messrs. MARTIN k COATE, of Oxford.
