O

ne of the most professional person in the Mzansi House Music Scene one has ever come into contact with!!! Believe me when I say,I have met alot of individuals who are part of the Mzansi House Scene and those with aspirations of being part of this scene. Chubby is just unique and one of a kind and that is so rare within an industry where uniqueness is as hard to find like a “Black AllStar In A Dark Room.

The Real House Head

S

ho!Mag C h u b b y, who is Chubby and where are you based?

Chubby : Madoda Tshutsha from KZN, Clermont. Clermont is a township in the heart of Durban, KZN, South Africa. But my parents are actually from the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Sho!Mag : The stage name “Chubby” where and how did that come about? Chubby : It’s actually funny… When I was younger I’ve always wanted to be a Deejays. So I had a friend then, his family owned a Shop where we used to hang out at. So there was this cold drink we used to enjoy a lot and apparently it was called “Chubby” and its logo had a chubby guy in it and I must admit the guy in the logo looked just a bit like me. So my friend Junior and I thought it would be a great idea to the name “Chubby” as my Deejay name and if I ended up making it in the Music Industry then my stage name would be “Chubby Da Dj”, but that

never happened as I took the route and became a Music Compiler and I somehow used that name as the title of my Debut Compilation Album “Good Music According To Chubby”. Sho!Mag : In the African House Music Scene, what part are you actually playing?

Chubby : I work a lot with international recording labels, so I help underground producers to release their music within these labels. I can safely say that I take African House Music to the International Arena and the response has been a positive one. Sho!Mag : So what do you prefer the most? Is it deejaying or music production? Chubby : I just love House Music and it has always been my dream to be in this exciting industry. I really don’t mind which role I play within House Music as it has always been my dream to be in this industry and to make it a better one. Sho!Mag : Chubby, when did you notice that you had love for House Music and what sparked that love for House Music? “Do you have any musical influences”? Chubby : The serious love for House Music started when I was doing Grade 8. My friend Ntokozo introduced me to some Deep House Music, by that time Blackcoffee was a Deep/Soulful House Music Producer and likes of Stimming , Rocco, Louis Vega, Culoe De Song and many more caught my attention. Since those, I never looked back and it has always been about House Music. Right now I’m influenced by artists such as Deep Mayer, Teddy Esposito, Smangar M, Masa,

G Bakamela, Deep House Vandal, BB Smooth and many more artist which I can’t mention at this moment. They all have something different about their music and they are all amazing to say the least. Sho!Mag : Musically, who have you worked with so far in this musical journey? Chubby : I have worked with a lot of amazing and talented house music producers and labels both locally and internationally. The likes of Deep Mayer, Teddy Esposito, Nj Househead, Chris Perrry, Dj Thesman, Ross Mt Park, Mathew Play, La ViccaMuziq, Smangar M, 75 Fifty and some collaborations are are due for release this year and next year. Sho!Mag : Are there any current music projects you are involved with? Chubby : My side Infinite Boys, La ViccaMuziq, Smangar M, Alunic Sounds, Simnique Soulful Savior, Labza Deep, Aarno, Teddy Esposito, 7d Fifty, Peter Rocco and many more man. The artists which I have mentioned above all did individual guest mixes for a Facebook Page which I used to manage where we shared underground house music

and some of their guest mixes were aired in Alra Park Radio. Sho!Mag : When you not busy creating house beats, what do you guys get up too? Chubby : When I am not busy with music which is very rare. I enjoy the company of my friends, just hanging out, funny enough mostly we will be chatting about music het… Sho!Mag : Currently what musical projects are you busy with? Chubby : For my compilation I have worked with Ubarn Flex, G Prod, Mute, Peter Rocco, Eric Houbron, Hughes Giboulay that would be for my 1st compilation “Good Music According To Chubby Vol1 Techno Version”. Sho!Mag :How would you describe the music in your current and previous projects? Chubby : Music in my previous project, I would describe it as “Dark and Raw” and its just simple Techno. The current one is full of Vocals and Vox. Its just beautiful house music compilation and I did not stick to a single House Music Genre, but everyone will find their favourite tracks there. It is a project for every House Head that love and appreciate the best in House Music.

CHUBBY

The Real House Head

Chubby : Durban is very versatile at the moment, allowing each and every music genre to have its share of the crowd and fans. But House Music will always have the major Chubby : After this compilation, the share of the pie with musicians such plan is to release remixes for each as Babes Wodumo, Distruction track in the compilation so expect Boyz, Benny Mavericj and many more music and events by Alra Park more underground artists slaying Radio. We are looking forward to that pie. having Deep Mayer tour this year and hopefully that will be finally possible. Sho!Mag : Any future or planned musical projects you are involved with, and what can we expect from you guys in the future?

Sho!Mag : As an artist based in the Durban. How is the music like that side? And if there are any challenges you face, what could be those challenges?

Sho!Mag : Any career highlights that jump into mind, what have been your Career highlights so far? Chubby : Being mentioned on Air by Metro Fm as Deep Mayer’s Manager was actually a nice thing to hear and that made me to work even harder and better myself at my chosen trade.

“We are looking forward to having Deep Mayer tour this year” Sho!Mag: Any message you might have for any Durban or South African based musician you might have? Chubby : Be consistent. Sho!Mag : Where and how can we get hold of your Music Projects? Chubby : T get your hands and ears to my compilation just do a google search “God Music According To Chubby” and to get music by Deep Mayer just google his name. All our projects are available in all music stores. Sho!

e have our two regular contributors, “MusiqKop” and “Kat”for the feature “BrandIt” as we discuss “How To Build A Solid Brand Within The Music Industry”?

First on the line is Anele Mamkeli, also known as “MusiqKop”. Anele Mamkeli ,is a 20 year old self taught male DJ and Music Composer based in the Khayelitsha which is one of the townships in Cape Town South Africa. After a several failed attempts to enrol in music institutions, he basically decided to teach himself how to dj as well as music composition. It all began on virtual dj years back, but now he is a very capable and hands on unsigned underground DJ and Producer. Not only that, he is also one of our regular contributors to our magazine. This is how our “chat” went down... Sho!Mag : According to your understanding what is Brand Building? MusiqKop : Brand building is when one or a group of people establish a certain brand and ensuring that it has a solid foundation ,so as for it to be able to grow from strength to strength. Most importantly building a brand requires one to know his target audience.

BUILD YOUR OWN BRAND

N

Sho!Mag : Would you say building one’s brand is a fundamental element in one’s musical career? And if it is, how so?

anything that can put your name out there, Newspaper interviews, regular one-on-one meet and greet sessions with your fans...

Kat : Definitely Yes ! Because the more out there you are the better the chances of you getting work, in this case it’s bookings for a performance. For instance, getting booked for an event does not only mean you bring yourself (DJ) and (or) your band members but also your name being on the poster will pull in more attendees to the event because they want to experience what you bring to the table as a performer, so if your are not out there, people don’t know about you ‘NO ONE’ other than just the people wanting to attend the event will be there. Building your brand means people will look forward to events/gigs that have featured you in the line up or even Sho!Mag : According to your your own events/gigs. understanding what is Brand Sho!Mag : What are the “tools” Building? you can say a Musician can use to build their brand? Basically it be can

Sho!Mag : What would you say is a “NO-NO” brand building?

ext up, we link up with Jack Pule also knowmn as “Kat”, from Mashishing, Lydenburg in Mpumalanga. He grew up there from Pre-school up until he matriculted from Mashishing High in 2014. He has been listening to music from as early as 7 years of age, and was exposed various genre of music mainly Hip-Hop/Rap and House music among others. As years went by, the House music bug bit hard and as most South African house-heads say...He was brought up by Compilation Albums. From there on it’s been house music all the way, also learning the ropes of music production. He is currently residing in Johannesburg for my studies and now a regular article contributor for Sho!Mag.

Kat : What I consider a ‘”NO-NO” when it comes to brand building is FORCING YOURSELF UNTO PEOPLE OR EVENTS, now that’s a TOTAL NO-NO ! Yes, you want to be given a chance but you have to build yourself all the way UP as a good, reliable and trusted brand (Musician/DJ) so those event organizers approach you for your services not someone who comes across as pushy.

“to me brand building means a lot of things” ADVICE ON BRAND BUILDING

1. Firstly know everything there is to know about yourself, what you want and how you want it. 2. Develop a plan of action and stick to it. 3. Be open to advice from those who came before you (They know the industry better than you), ask where you don’t know or you are not sure. 4. Respect your brand. 5. Always conduct yourself in a professional manner.

I can say this album is like the one by Culoe in terms of creativity, DJ Kent sings throughout the album. We are also blessed by the beautiful vocals of Nandi Mngoma on Fly With Me. Other tracks of note include X, Your Love that features Ziyon.

Regarded by many as one of the best compilation albums in the past decade. On the album the official single is Rain Man by DJ Sonic and vocalist Paul B. The song Too Much Information remixed by Laolu is also there, a crowd favorite I must add. Featured on the album is LAHV, Dindy.

1 Dj Mizz Never Stop Dreaming

A nicely packed album featuring the likes of DJ Micks, Stones & Bones and Mizz. Hits include Kuwe, Yahweh and Themba. SA rapper Cassper Nyovest is on the song titled Dlala, whilst Busiswa and Nokwazi are rep’ing Kalawa Jazmee on Ke Waka.

SPRING FIESTA 2016

O

nce again, it is that time of the year. Spring is upon us and what way than to welcome Spring than with a Spring Fiesta. Sho!Mag for the first time brings you the official review of the both the Spring Fiesta Conference and the main Spring Fiesta Annual Event.Sho!

What a way to introduce ourselves to the “Media World”. Sho!Mag is only a year old and this is our 6th Issue. Well, we just recieved our first Spring Fiesta Media Accreditation. Meaning we have exclusive permission to cover this event. Enough said about that, on the 28th September we attended the Spring Fiesta Conference which was hosted Monique Bingham (US), Jullian in Emperors Palace Convertion Gomes (SA). He makes his presence felt, sure is worthy of his own entire set (which we missed). Ross was just the king that Atjazz needed. Coming in just at the right time, he made the moments track such a bliss without the guitar riff. Djs @ Work (Christos And Vinny) Now before I delve into the set, let me try to paint a picture of just how this floor was set up. Im not talking about the physical structure. Im no engineer. This is where Soul Candi comes into play. How do you make sure the floor works, even if its not the Main Stage?

One thing about a Sjs At Work set, can be loosely compared to a BlackCoffee set, from the sense that, you never know the tracks, however you are certain to hit the dance floor!!! One of the patrons had Shazam on and the thing just did not produce any results for except one or two tracks. It was always going to be interesting, that transition from Ndinga Gaba to the duo, I have 1st hand experiances of them whispering into each other’s ears and egos clashing on set, not in a way that would jeopardise the set or visible to the naked eye. By the time Chistos played Mr V – Something With Jazz (Jimpster Remix), we were all singing along, clapping, cheering them on. The Duo also played The late Lebo

Mathosa – Music (Dj Christos Magic Remix), a rare special moment. We just didn’t know whether to cry or stand and sing along but sure got us reminiscing. We were impressed about how well organised the Spring Fiesta was and everything was just where it was supposed to be. The place where the event was held is very easy to locate, with the number of Metro Cops making sure that the law inforcement side is well attended to. Security was extra tight, with barriers every 500 metres for both cars and attendees on foot. Well done to the Spring Fiesta team. The event is a certain reminder that the house music genre is alive. As shown by the images below.Sho!
