S

ho! Welcome to it, as in this month‟s issue we take some time out to hang out with Yanga Mtshakaca better known as Curls Deep in the Mzansi House Music scene.

So, date was set when we would have the exclusive one on one with this Mthatha born young talented house music producer / deejay. And nothing was left to chance when we met.

Born and raised in the city of Mthatha in the province of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Curls Deep has been in it, as reflected by the matured Deep House sound this young deejay / producer has been making recently.

You can tell that Curls Deep is as genuine as they come, I say this because our one on one was held in his studio “Tidal Music”. As one looks around, hanging on the studio walls are some his pictures of events he was part of.

With banging single release simply titled “Mthatha bang”, Curls Deep has just recently followed the success of his single with an EP release titled “Sounds Of Victory”.

On the day Curls Deep and I had this one on one, I caught him off guard doing what he does best, making beats. So without any further delay, lets get into it...

I

nterviewer: Who is Curls Deep and where is Curls Deep from ?

Curls Deep: Curls Deep is originally known as Yanga Mtshakaca, born in 1991/09/09.I was born, raised and spent most of my child hood days in Mthatha and around the province. Interviewer: Can you tell us more about the

Interviewer: Curls Deep, when did you notice that you had love for House Music and what sparked that love for House Music? “Any musical influences”? Curls Deep: When I was in primary, I use to host party sessions in my class room every Fridays, no music just me beating desk for drums and

the young Curls Deep growing up, what kind of a childhood you had my man? Curls Deep: I was always a lover of music, particularly house. I acquired my skills at the tender age of 15years while following the late Qaqambile Bulo (DJ Surprise) and Lwando “Curls Deep and Ritz At Imbizo” Madaza (DJ Stitch) U.C.R FM former Djs, around when they hosted house sessions. Being a fast learner, I was quick to pick up the mixing techniques and it carried me all the way to high school. After completing Grade 12, I moved to. That is where I came first in a battle of the Djs competition hosted by Rose Bank College. Then in 2011, I moved to Johannesburg where I joined the production team of O'Tee Productions and I was directly involved in the recording tracks for various artists.

windows for bass playing house music beats..2005 December, I and my cousin went to Johannesburg for holidays. Fortunately for me, my uncle whom we visited was working at a Recording Studio. We recorded 3 kwaito tracks, and then I got inspired and motivated to carry on with music. After, I

decided to learn how to Dj since my cousin was a Dj. Interviewer: We all aware that the Eastern Cape province is a bit behind when it comes to Deep House Music. So with that in mind what has been your biggest challenge thus far my man? Curls Deep: It is challenging because I have to search on the internet for new Deejays and their music but luckily for me I‟m connected with other Djs from other Provinces so they share some of new stuff.

I

nterviewer: Who have you worked with so far in this musical journey of yours?

Interviewer: Any future or planned musical projects Curls Deep is involved with, like what do hope the future holds for the brand Curls Deep? Curls Deep: My man, I am currently working on the release of my debut full length album due out later this year. What I can say is “ it‟s my time” man and expect nothing but flames when that drops!!!

Curls Deep: Mostly I have worked with local Mthatha based artists and musicians. To name a couple of those artists Interviewer: Career highlights my man, what Vusikhaya Nonkwelo (Ritz), Yongama Madaza have been your Career highlights so far? (Kronic), Sitenkosi Rudah (Ill-Shot) , Curls Deep: My music career is on the rise, Christopher Sekese (ElCrizzY) , Pelokazi but if I had to pick and choose. . I would say Gqweta, Lona Gqweta, Chuma Tyumre (Ezra), the release of my debut EP titled “Sounds Of Sibulele Mshumpela (Infinity), Aviwe Dywili Victory” is the highlight of my career. This I (Dj Eister) and Sibongile . say because this EP has been long “the release of my debut Interviewer: Any current music coming, I just kept on delaying the EP titled “Sounds Of project you are involved with? Victory” is the highlight of release date because I wanted to Curls Deep: Currently pushing my career ” offer a well-rounded project the following projects my man. especially with it being my debut Curls Deep-Sounds Of Victory E.P (OUT NOW). A Soul Candi Selektor Series-Limpopo edition Album Launch event where, I will be playing live alongside Chymamusiq, Punk and Brazo Wa Afrika in Mthatha sports field, on the 4th July 2015.And currently have a new single coming out now, Curls Deep where I feature Dj Eister titled “Mthatha Made Me”. Interviewer: Life besides music Curls Deep, any other projects you are involved in when you are not doing music? P

odcasting, on this issue @Brandit we uncover and unpack this topic fully. We had to dig deeper on this one, because with proper use, this tool can help in brand building.

@DjDaPrince “According to my understanding of the term Podcasting, it is a guest mix of less than an hour or more than an hour that you have recorded to share with people or maybe share it over the radio so as to help get your name or brand out there to the masses. It must be a perfect and too, it must have a playlist as well.”

With that in mind, I had to bring in the “big guns” put them together and serve them with five questions which will help in understanding what Podcasting really. And on top , I so happen to bring in some “new cats”, just to balance this and it went so...

@kaymoodkhange “I do podcasts to touch souls of listeners the main aim is to make people aware of a Deep House Deejay who goes by the name Kay Mood. Podcasting has helped me a lot, as I constantly get feedback and advice on my mixing skills. Do not be lazy to do podcasts, if you love doing podcasts keep going and listen to the downloader’s opinions and feedback.”

@Rzr_Ray “Podcasts will enable you to build a stronger relationship with your audience or fans, followers of music which you cater for. As a deejay the reason why one should podcast or if you are a producer is to market yourself or promote oneself, for people to get to know what kind of music you are playing when they book you, or it is about giving back to your fans.”

@PiusXulu How would you describe podcasting to someone who does not know what it is? Podcasting is the preparation of digital audio or video files or recordings, usually part of a themed series, which can be downloaded to music/video players. Why do you podcast? I love doing it. The house music scene has really evolved and with its evolvement comes a lot of new music and at the same time good music is not being featured on commercial radio stations or television programmes. There are many up and coming good producers and artists who really could do with the exposure and support, so this is where we come in as Deejays Lounge on the podcasting scene . @SefKombo How would you describe podcasting to someone who does not know what it is? Well technically podcasting is the combination of the words broadcasting and IPod it‟s a piece of audio musically, speech based or a combination of both delivered to your apple device, although now podcasts exist on other platforms. Why do you podcast? I podcast because I believe it is one of the fastest and efficient ways to get your broadcast material to your fans for on demand listening, once somebody is subscribed then you don‟t have to really worry about promoting to them as they are your fan now and they won‟t miss a show.

What’s has podcasting helped you with? It has helped us in a major way because we as #DeejaysLounge utilized it as one of our major marketing tools, to market our DeejaysLounge brand and excessively get it out to the masses. As Deejays Lounge, we‟re not only musically driven however, we have the undying love and passion of uplifting our youth and people in general Any advice for someone who has recently started to podcast. Yes for sure. “The music is always there, just follow your dream”.

What’s has podcasting helped you with? Like above its helped me to work on gaining new fans rather than having to try and retain or remind old fans that I have a new broadcast. It also has helped me to build my skills as a free thinking creative broadcaster. I have no boundaries so you get the full me and I get real listeners. Any advice for someone who has recently started to podcast. You need good music! But that good music is you, and sometimes other people can relate to it, that is what you need for a podcast. If it is speech based just be free be honest, it is your channel. Have fun and learn!

@bondjobe How would you describe podcasting to someone who does not know what it is? Podcasting is an online broadcasting of one‟s material, be it music or video or both...It could be live or pre-recorded and available to a specific group of audience or public. Why do you podcast? I podcast in order to reach my fans. Most of the time some of our music is not received properly in our local areas due to less or no interest our public FM radio‟s have for our type of music. Therefore podcasting has helped me notice that some people out there in different countries and continents actually not only listen but love what we play and make. @DjStaxSA How would you describe podcasting to someone who does not know what it is?

What’s has podcasting helped you with? Podcasting has helped me reach every continent with music we serve at my company “Planet Of House” since 2006. Podcasting has also helped me notice that there‟s more music than that we hear on our local FM radio and that we see on online stores‟ top 10 or 100‟s.Through podcasting many of our DJ‟s and music lovers have been able to select good music not by the Producer‟s name or fame but in the name of good music. For podcasting, what does one need? For podcasting, you need a lot of passion and also one needs a lot of time to promote their material... Any advice for someone who has recently started to podcast ?

Music, shows to your intended target online and on social platforms. It is normally in a pre-recorded format.

I would advise people to fully utilize this kind of platform now that the technology is giving us leverage. It‟s easy now, because you can synchronize it with your social network pages. It can easily turn your friends into fans if used effectively.

Why do you podcast?

For podcasting, what does one need?

People use podcasts to reach out to their target market and to build brand awareness.

Platforms and services such as those offered by “Podomatic” for broadcasting Mp3 format and also “YouTube”for broadcasting video format have made podcasting to be easily accessible to just about any person who wishes to be a podcaster.

Is a form of broadcasting

What’s has podcasting helped you with? It helps in building brand loyalty and increased fan base. It can only work out when the podcaster is consistent and relevant to the intended market with their podcast.

Tips By Pius Xulu

Tips By Bond Jobe

1.Set it out to be different from the rest.

1.Be patient and know what you are doing and why you are doing it.

2.Set it out to be different from the rest. There‟s already thousands of podcasters so find something that will make you stand out and be of interest. 3.Be true and stay true to yourself and let your input be what you really feel. 4.Know that it is not a competition so don‟t do it to compete with others. 5.Never underestimate your ability to make it to the top. 6.YOU are the brand, work hard and different at making it known and relevant. 7.Believe, have faith, have morale, be you, be different, just BE...

2.Having many downloads is good! It shows you have good marketing skills, however let that not lead you to releasing average to bad quality material, keep your podcast on the best professional level possible. 3.Ask for help and advice on older podcast owners. 4.Allocate quality time in your schedule to look at the statistics. 5.Don‟t just “drop a mix”, make it look presentable. 6.Make sure you ask for people‟s perspectives and difficulties with the site you are hosting your podcast in...
