On The Spot Interviewer: How has your journey been my man, since you are an Eastern Cape based deejay?

I

nterviewer: Thank you for taking some timeout for us, so who is Mpeshnyk and where is he from? Mpeshnyk: Thank you for the opportunity. For those who do not know Mpendulo or Mpesh is from the small town of Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape. Born and raised I'm just an ordinary lover of all kinds of music from birth. Interviewer: Your take on the state of affairs when it comes to the Deep House scene in the Eastern Cape? Mpeshnyk: The state of deep house in the Eastern Cape, is strong and has been strong for a number of years now. I may not have the chance to travel around the province but I can assure you that the energy is there all round. Whether there are a few audiences for it or more. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of audiences around our province and it is very much strong hold here.

Mpeshnyk: I've been to quite a number of venues mostly in the Gauteng province to start of. And I must say the journey has been very inspiring. Started playing at Kospotong in Melville, Social Bar on 7th Avenue, then moved to reside in Braamfontein at a restaurant that used to be in Braamfontein Centre called "Pantsula Bites". Played with the likes of Mosscode, 4play, Dj Tumza, ZaiMaya, MLK Da Dj, just to name a few. Then being invited to play along side Jullian Gomes, Kid Fonque, Ralf GUM, Rampage Soule, etc. Then I got to travel to Kuruman, Northern Cape and met some very inspiring Djs from other parts of the country that share the same love and appreciation for house music in general. Also got the opportunity to meet the likes of Mr. O, ZuluMafia, Sir LSG etc. So in all I've met those that have been Djing and producing for years before I started and whilst within my musical journey I've taken so far. Interviewer: Any musical projects Mpeshnyk has been part of and are there any current ones you are involved in? Mpeshnyk: At the moment I'm in the process of putting together my first solo album due to be released before the end of the year. One of the singles called "The Priesthood" will be out under an independent label owned by Dj Stax also from Mthatha, Eastern Cape. Including other original material I've done with Kanetiv Xsoul, Masta Candi, MLK Da Dj and a lot of other local acts. Plus to add on, a new remix i did for "The EGH Project" (Italy) is expected to be out soon. Not sure on the release date but you will obviously be informed about that soon hopefully.

Interviewer: Any future or planned musical projects Mpeshnyk is involved with, like what do you hope the future holds for the brand Mpeshnyk? Mpeshnyk: Not one to say much about future plans, but all I can say is expect a lot more between now and the future to come. Interviewer: Career highlights my man, what have been your Career highlights so far? Mpeshnyk: Career highlights thus far really have been given the opportunity to put together my first solo album. Never thought that time would come but it has and will give this project my all. Interviewer: Last words for the young ones ma man looking at music as a career? Mpeshnyk: Stay true to yourself, believe in yourself, and never substitute respect for attention. @mpeshnyk31

I

nterviewer: So my man, tell me about this music journey when did it start and how did it start? Mpeshnyk: Started my journey from a very early age in schools I used to attend. Learned how to play piano, flute, and singing at school choirs from primary school till high school. Interviewer: Mpeshnyk, let’s talk about your set my man, what kind of music makes up your set? Mpeshnyk: I love putting together a lot of material out there that's from whatever part of the world locally or internationally. But in essence, most of my sets start of really deep and drifts off into regular house. Or they might just drift off to really deep. So it really doesn't matter. I might randomly start off with eg. jazz or lounge music just to experiment where the set would take flight, into deep then regular house.

PAVARA “Hustle with Respect”

S

ho! August issue. It is not by mistake that in this issue we find ourselves chilling with this 24 year old talented Mpumalanga born young house music deejay/producer.

full “Ultimate Deep Xplosive”. Since listening to that initial mixtape by Dj Pavara, I have been hooked to his sound so to say.

I came across his work round about this time last year if I am not mistaken “phew, how time can fly by”. It was his “mixtape series” which was and still is under his movement called “UDX” in

So, let me try and waist less time and get to it so as to find out what makes Dj Pavara the person he has turned to be and hopefully give you guys a side yet to be seen…

What is really impressive about this young talented house music deejay is his musical I have been fortunate to have worked with Dj maturity. That can be clearly illustrated by the Pavara whose birth name is Thulane Calvin tracks he selects for his mixes. The timing in Dhludhlu on a several musical projects and I must add that it was truly an honour to have him which he fusses two tracks is flawless and right up there with the best and believe me when I say on the cover of this August issue as this young man and in my own opinion has what it takes to that I do listen to a lot of house music mixes and he is right up there with the best of „em. make it big in the music scene.

nternet based radio stations. What is it all about? And how can it help in building a brand if used in a correct manner. These are some of the points which will be covered in this month‟s issue of “BrandIt”. Just a brief definition of an “Internet Based Radio Station”. An internet radio is a broadcast using the internet as the connection to the radio rather than airwaves. So in simple an internet radio station can only be listened to via internet. The basic requirements to use “Internet Radio” is that you have a broadband internet connection at your home or wherever you use the radio. Since an “Internet Based Radio Station” does not have limitations according to its broadcast area as compared to traditional radio, an artist can receive a “World Wide” exposure for their material. To discuss this matter, I had to call upon “Sebusiso Mbatha” of “House365 Radio” and “AfroSoul Monk” of “Alra Park Radio”. Read about what they had to say about “Internet Based Radio Station” ...Sho!

H

ouse365Radio is an internet based radio station that was founded on the 10th of June 2012. The founder and only member of House365 is Sebusiso Mbatha from Newcastle (KZN). House365Radio is a South African House Music internet radio station. Playing Deep House Music, Soulful House, Afro House Mixes and music from upcoming artists,Dj’s/Producers. Broadcasting 24/7 with scheduled mixes/shows every Wednesday, Thursday and Sundays. Interviewer: How would you describe what an internet based radio station is to someone who does not know what it is? Sebusiso Mbatha: Well that is simple; it‟s a radio station that can only be listened over the internet. Interviewer: What made you to start an internet based radio station? Sebusiso Mbatha: Uhmmm well I wanted to be a House Music Producer but I was bad in creating music beats/instruments, so I wanted to do something that will make me work with House Music Producers and Dj‟s. So starting an online radio was the only option for me. Interviewer: What has starting an internet based radio station helped you with? Sebusiso Mbatha: I have helped a few Dj‟s/ Producers that I have worked with so far. Interviewer: Any advice for someone who has recently started an internet based radio station? Sebusiso Mbatha: We have over 100 online radio stations worldwide, try to do thing differently than the rest. Interviewer: What would a typical person need in order to access an internet based radio station? Sebusiso Mbatha: Just an internet enabled cellphone and PC/Mac.

Interviewer: How hard is it to start an internet based radio station and what does one need in order to start an internet based radio station? Sebusiso Mbatha: For me, it was not that hard because before I started the whole radio thing, I did some research that helped me to understand what an online radio station is all about. And I have a diploma in IT so that played a major role in understanding what types of networks and servers I should use. Interviewer: What are the advantages of an internet based radio station as opposed to the traditional radio stations? Sebusiso Mbatha: Online radio got more coverage than a traditional radio, even though Dj‟s/Producers tend to forget that. Interviewer: Are there organisations, bodies and regulations one has to meet when they start or own an internet based radio station? Sebusiso Mbatha: Online radio owners or those who need to open an online radio must contact CAPASSO is a mechanical rights licensing agency based in Johannesburg, South Africa, which collects and distributes royalties to its members, music publishers and composers. Interviewer: We all know that starting any project is a bit costly affair. How did you source funds to start and keep your project going? Sebusiso Mbatha: For me it didn‟t cost that much, as I have mentioned I have a background in IT and doing a lot of research also helped me a lot. Another thing is, I am always available for those who need help about Online Radio, I am not a guru but can teach/help one if they need assistance. Interviewer: How can one access your Radio Station? Sebusiso Mbatha: We are available on http:// house365radio.co.za you can tune in using your Smartphone or PC/Mac.

Alra Park: We have not received any sponsorship or finance so we fund everything from our pockets we only broadcast every Friday between 9 and 12 Pm.

Interviewer: What has starting an internet based radio station helped you with? Alra Park: As we are deejays, we have grown our fan base and have learnt how a radio show is run, and our knowledge has grown due to the vast house music mixes that are submitted weekly to us. Interviewer: Any difficulties you can highlight along this journey? Alra Park: Well, there are a lot but will only mention a few, late submissions, internet server is sometimes down meaning we have to cancel shows, sometimes our internet server is very slow due to overcrowding making it difficult to stream, and some people still are not aware as to how to access or listen to our radio station. Interviewer: We all know that starting any project is a bit of a costly affair. How did you source the funds to start and keep your project going? Alra Park: Well we havenâ€&#x;t ventured into sourcing funds and everything we do is funded by ourselves, itâ€&#x;s our way of giving back to the community, we struggle a lot but we have come this far and we in the process of getting help or funds. I

nterviewer: Who is Bondeep ad where are you from?

Bondeep: Bondeep is a 21 year old female dj from Vosloorus, in the East Rand. Interviewer: Bondeep, when did you notice that you had love for House Music and what sparked that love for House Music? “Any musical influences that might have played a part in your journey”? Bondeep: I started listening to music (Jazz Music to be precise) at the tender age of 7 years old. I was just a bit different from other children. My elder brother would buy house music records and I was forced to listen so I guess I was bound to love and understand music. Musical influences that have played a part in my journey are the likes of Vinny Da Vinci & and a Japanese producer named Satoshi Tommie.

I

nterviewer: Who is Ms Eve and where are you from?

Ms Eve: Ms Eve “Iviwe Mbobosi”, is a fierce house music Dj born in Paarl, one of the Cape‟s winelands. Interviewer: Being a female in a male dominated scene, what challenges does this pose if any for you? Ms Eve: I was at a critical stage in my development as a musician. The path to a career as a professional musician (Dj to be specific) was becoming clearer to me, and my passion and talent were becoming more evident. These days, it feels like a balance has been struck. There are certainly jobs within the industry that appear to have a gender lean. It‟s definitely not ok when people are making assumptions about your ability to do a job you work extremely hard at based on your gender.

Interviewer: We all are aware that within the music industry , competition is fierce with a lot of talented and hardworking deejays/ Producers . How does Bondeep set herself apart from the next Deejay/Producer? Bondeep: Although the music industry has fierce, I set myself apart from the next deejay by bringing new music to the masses. I do not conform to the norm. My aim is to teach people music not to play what they are familiar with. Jazz & lounge is not popular, hence I aim to teach and let people know about its existence. Interviewer: What have been your career highlights so far? Bondeep: My career highlights include signing under Ngema Dream Team and also being nominated as the “Best Upcoming Female Deejay in SA”. Working as the “SA Awards Brand Ambassador” is also a huge achievement and I‟m hoping more doors will open for me. Interviewer: When playing a set, what kind of music do you tend to include in your set? Ms Eve: As much as I am a Deep House Music fanatic when choosing my set, I choose music that will hit the soul of my audience ranging from Deep House, tribal and commercial house music. I like my set to be a soulful journey. Interviewer: Who have you worked with so far in your musical journey? Ms Eve: Being in the industry for some time, I‟ve worked with many Deejays and artists, as I‟m working on my debut single I‟m now working with a production crew called Groove Associates, Primetime and vocalists such as Lungisa “Phixx” Xhamela, IniHeri and Vidge just to name a few. And currently working on towards a release of my debut album which I will start working on from Spring as I hope to release next year.

I

nterviewer: Who is Lady Blue and where are you from?

Lady Blue: Lady Blue is an upcoming female dj who plays souful and jazzysoul house and loves music with all her heart, well I was born and raised in Soweto Meadowlands Zone 2 and Zone 4. Interviewer: Lady Blue, when did you notice that you had love for House Music and what sparked that love for House Music? “Any musical influences” that might have played a part in your journey? Lady Blue: It was in year 2000 while I was still playing soccer just loved music so much, the combination of instruments, Kanny G and R Kelly they the people that maid me release that music is great and where words fail music can fill the space.

Interviewer: How does Lady Blue sets herself apart from the next Deejay/Producers? Lady Blue: Oh well I believe that all deejays have their own special taste in music and mixing and I believe that if we were all given about four tracks that are the same we would mix them differently due to that individual “musical taste” we have. One more thing im a female dj that likes jazzy instruments most of the time. Interviewer: Any future or planned musical projects Lady Blue is involved with, like what do hope the future holds for the brand Lady Blue? Lady Blue: I am working on some tracks of my own hopefully some of them will be reliesed soon, oh well and I hope the name LadyBlue gets well known and would like to work with more female deejays that are unknown and hopefully one day play in some huge venue in Miami and represent all female deejays.

currently. Interviewer: Growing up, what kind of upbringing Dj Thotho had? Dj Thotho: I was raised in a strict family, they hare still taking things easy. I believe a child should pursue what is in his/her heart and not be forced to do something they don‟t like. My upbringing was focused on just that. Interviewer: . Love of music and love for deejying in particular, what sparked the love for that Thotho? Dj Thotho: Haha...My love for music started like 8 years back.
