INTRO Hello People!

As you may imagine, one of the main advantages of working here at SIP is the immediate availability of spare parts for your scooter. During the many hours spent recently in our workshop with Jesco, while pimping a vintage VM II ”Faro Basso“ Vespa from 1955, I became truly aware of this privilege. While delving through our warehouse shelving to retrieve various components for the task I was also reminded of the planning involved by you, our customers, considering the inevitable delay between ordering essential parts for your scooter and their delivery. If something is not 100% compatible the process becomes even more frustrating and time-consuming. This lead me to make two decisions:

1. To spend more time getting oily fingers in the workshop, I had almost forgotten how satisfying this experience can be! 2. Redouble my efforts to ensure all orders received are accurately compiled and dispatched the same day to avoid delays and disappointment due to incompatible parts. Additionally, in the coming months DHL will now be commencing a home delivery service up till 10 pm. Stephan Hufschmid began his apprenticeship as a sales administrator here in 2001 and now heads the sales department. Martin Silberhorn is responsible for our key accounts involving dealers located outside the German-speaking parts of the World. Robert Kerner first caught our attention from the other side of our counter fifteen years ago as a knowledgeable customer with the motivation to complete challenging restoration projects. They were congratulated by Dr. Eberhard Sasse, the president of the chamber of industry and commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria, each receiving an official certificate of honour!

HELMET ADVICE

HOW CAN I FIND A SUITABLE HELMET? In order to legally ride a two-wheeler on EU roads that manages 20 kph or more, you are obliged to wear an approved crash helmet. They are intended to protect the riders head in case of an accident. We have compiled a few essential tips to help you choose the right helmet. Firstly, always take sufficient time on your shopping trip to allow you to find the helmet that fits and suits your style of riding. Visit a reputable licensed motorcycle crash helmet retailer that sells products from a number of different manufacturers. This increases your

chances of finding an item that suits you as not all makes fit different peoples individual head shapes.

When the chin strap is closed and correctly adjusted your helmet should not be able to be pulled off to the front, even with great effort.

Once it is in position and fastened you should not feel any increased pressure at any point of contact. When you have found the correct fit the skin on your forehead should move with the helmet when moved gently from side-to-side.

We have a range of between 80-100 different helmets in the in-house store at our HQ in Landsberg. We also stock an XL-sized range catering for larger riders.

The upholstered lining will become softer during use so avoid buying a size that will become too large to be safe. The upholstery should also have complete contact with your scalp.

THE OLDEST VESPA WORLDWIDE :

NUMMERO 3

Recently the most possibly oldest existing Vespa, a model 98, was offered at auction by the auctioneers Catawiki. It was part of the ‚0‘ series, a small pre-production run of sixty scooters manufactured in 1946 with the ‚1003‘ frame and ‚014‘ engine numbers. Due to a lack of production tooling and suitable presses they were largely made by hand, with each body part individually beaten from sheet-metal. According to the auction house the highest bid received in the March 2017 auction was € 182000, which meant the scooter did not change hands due to its reserve price of a quarter of a million Euro! The most expensive Vespa in the World?

Roughly 700 keen Vespa and scooter enthusiasts gathered in beautiful Seattle, Washington, USA this year at the start of July for Amerivespa 2017, the US counterpart to Vespa World Days. Not only was Amerivespa celebrated but also the 25th anniversary of the VCOA (Vespa Club of America). Amerivespa is the largest Vespa scooter rally in the USA with participants from the USA, Mexico and Canada. We accepted the Vespa Club of America’s invitation to be there live and get an idea of the spectacle for ourselves. Even as we came into land we were given a hint of what awaited us: Seattle is surrounded by a landscape of many lakes, national parks, mountains and the sea, the ideal location for a scooter rally. It is precisely for this reason that the organiser VCOA in cooperation with local scooter clubs was offering various rides throughout the event. Starting with guided

tours through the major city with approx. 700,000 inhabitants to day rides on Bainbridge Island as well as other sights and hotspots around Seattle, there was even plenty to see for locals. A colourful mixed bunch of modern and vintage models wound through Seattle and the surrounding area time and time again. We exhibited our highlight products such as tubeless rims, digital tachos & rev counter, SIP road exhaust systems, the bag range and other new products on a small improvised SIP stand at the vendor show. Old friends and customers were welcomed to the stand with bright sunshine and blue skies. Other items on the programme included a custom show, pinstriping, live music, DJs and a gymkhana circuit that put the skills of several Vespa riders to the test. The evening banquet was held in proper style at the “Seattle Huskys” college football stadium. With fresh

Alaska salmon and copious amounts of Rainers beer we partied and sang the night away. During the evening, the position of President of the VCOA was passed to our good friend Josh Rogers from California who we got to know at Amerivespa 2009. Congratulations! Thanks to lots of sponsors and the prizes they provided, a great prize draw was held on Sunday morning which participants could stock up on lots of tickets for in the days leading up to this. Besides lots of smaller prizes, tyres and merchandise, you could win a new Buddy scooter from the Genuine company and the icing on the cake – an old but restored Vespa GL 150. After the prize draw, everyone then proceeded to the auction house straight away. A huge collection of old Vespa posters, accessories and approx. 150 Vespas, Lambrettas and other scooters were auctioned there. The collection was provided by

Victor from Big People Scooters in Seattle, who wanted to liquidate just a small part of his huge portfolio of vehicles. Besides several old and rundown frames there were also a few real gems under the hammer here such as a beautifully restored VLA and a 1948 “fender light�. With this Amerivespa 2017 in Seattle drew to a close with lots of happy faces and heaps of restoration work. All of us from SIP gained a wonderful insight into the American scooter scene and would like to thank everyone involved, the organisers and the local Vespa clubs for the invitation and above all their hospitality.

The start of October 2016: at this year’s NEOCOM fair in Düsseldorf, with the prize for the “Catalogue of the year”, the SIP Scootershop was crowned winner in the B2C category. The envied trophy is considered to be the top prize in the mailorder sector.

The NEOCOM takes place once a year and is the most important trade show for the interactive retail sector. The expert jury from the German consultants for the mailorder sector “Versandhausberater” chose the finalists from a new record of submissions and a wide variety of proposals. The jury consisted of Barbara Bergmann (Chief Editor of Versandhausberater), Ansgar Holtmann (Direct Marketing Consulting Hamburg), Gabriele Laurich (Siegfried Vögele Institute), Dirk Knütter (last year‘s winner – Kaiser + Kraft Europe) and Jürgen Seiferth (Director of Riegg&Partner Werbeagentur GmbH). SIP Scootershop was able to prevail against the tough competition and take first place. “This award is a superb reward for all of the blood, sweat and tears that the catalogue team and the agency 24sieben invested in the compilation of our 950 page catalogue,” enthused Sebastian Bauch, Product Manager at SIP Scootershop. The highly acclaimed prize is in recognition of an excellent concept in the area of mail order, a clear USP, the ability to enthuse and technical precision. The catalogue, which weighs over 2kg, convinced the expert jury with the expressive and successful design of its title page which continues in the form of a complete range of catalogues, its informal and yet authentic style of presentation, and last but not least the consistent refusal to use dull and

conventional stylistic elements. The last point in particular and a pleasing overall concept helped crown SIP Scootershop the winners in the B2C (consumers) category. The prize was gratefully accepted by Sebastian Bauch and Stephan Hufschmid who are both members of the SIP catalogue team and who announced the compilation of a new “Modern Vespa” catalogue for 2017 for the Vespa models GTS/Primavera/Sprint/ LX etc. Here, an excerpt from the verdict of the jury: “A successful catalogue range surpassing any established industry norms? This occurrence is rare and only possible with cunning concepts – SIP have achieved an example of such a unique and extremely consequent vision. The combination of a ‚BigBook‘ format PLUS satellite catalogues advertising accessories, clothing and their own specialist products PLUS a lovingly prepared extra magazine representing the flagship-store. The entire palette of publications is jauntily coloured as a reminder of the graphic title imagery, that hits home with the style of the target audience. Even the delivery documents continue this attractive theme, with an authentic, rousing lifestyle replacing in this case the standard didactic dialogue. The add-ons including Vespa events and tours motivates a lasting customer patriotism. The daring combination is readily accepted by the already initiated and dedicated audience of Vespa aficionados.

VES PA ROADT R I P F R OM S I N G APORE TO E U R OP E “LET’S RIDE A VESPA SCOOTER FROM SINGAPORE TO EUROPE..” ...my friend exclaimed. We were discussing about a late friend who passed away two weeks before this adventure ride. The brevity and uncertainty of life never struck us harder. Before this point, my inner wanderlust was quelled by the rat race driven by societal expectations. A crazy idea was born hence then - a combinati-

on of my desire to travel and my love of Vespa riding. Five years after that initial conversation, I found myself to be the only one still fixated on this crazy adventure idea. I will say, the most difficult part of this adventure was not the arduous logistics nor the bureaucratic preparations that took place. It was rather the mental preparation of letting go of a certain certainty in having a base; a “home”. On May 16th of 2015, morning, after lots of all the farewells and tears, I took the first big step of my adventure. What was planned to be an 8 to 9 months journey, turned out to be much longer. As the world

constantly tickles the insatiable curiosity in me, I ended up spending months working in many countries and making many detours as well. Starting from Singapore, my Vespa and I crossed the causeway into Malaysia and then to Thailand and Myanmar. The Vespa scooter, being so ubiquitous in the Southeast Asia and other parts of the world, has always been a great conversation starter. After Myanmar, I entered into the little-known region called Northeast India, a 7-states region connected to the rest of India by a narrow 23 km area called the Siliguri Gateway. Diverse, fascinating and untouched, the few

hundred kilometres I travelled was a new experience of culture and language. In the state of Meghalaya, the Khasi villages holds the most ingenious bioengineering technique of making bridges out of live tree roots. These live bridges grows stronger with time, therefore requiring minimal maintenance. Clean water running under these bridges supports the inhabitants. Living in a small collective community enables them to sustain themselves by depending on their natural surroundings. Seeing how people are living live healthily and contented with little money, my definition of poverty was redefined. Dubbed the Biker’s Paradise of India, the LehManali Highway cuts through some of the most scenic places in the Himalayas. Varying beauties of nature can be seen in this 490km stretch of beaten road - snow-capped mountains, canyons, deserts and lakes, you name it. The harsh oxygen- deprived environment also gives this highway its insidious reputation. “Your scooter is not going to survive,” I was told. Well, my motto has always been “If you never try, you never know.” From Manali to Leh, my scooter and I took the many beatings and crawled our way through 5000m mountain passes. In the inhospitable terrains of Ladakh, there was no lack as I was met with the upmost hospitality from local bikers and travellers who outsaw that I came a long way on an old beaten scooter. With their extension of friendships and companionships, I was hardly alone. The northern areas of Pakistan was the most picturesque place so far. Towering mountains and turquoise blue lakes made the scene surreal, seemingly photoshopped. Full report, many pictures and videos can be found here:

IN THE SUMMER OF 1989 A STORY ABOUT THE SCOOTERBOY MOVEMENT APPEARED IN STERN, A GERMAN WEEKLY MAGAZINE. THE REPORT IS PERFECTLY SUITED AS A TIME DOCUMENT, SEE FOR YOURSELF:

“It all began in London in the late fifties. At that time, a couple of young people who rode scooters, wearing Italian suits, and listened to the music of the blacks: Ska, the forerunner of Reggae, and Soul, who came from America across the Atlantic. With their style and the right pills, they put an end to the still-post-war economic miracle routine, because youth did not take place in it and life was different from fun. „Mods“ were the young people and were England‘s first own youth culture. In the mid-sixties „Mods“ did not work anymore: their style had become an arrogant attitude, and the pharmaceutical industry had changed the prescription of the pills. Many mods cut their hair short, called themselves skinheads, listened to black

music and fought against apartheid and the oppression of the blacks in England. They later split the Oi skins and of them the Fascho skins. In 1979 the film „Quadrophenia“ brought a second wave of mods across Europe. The kids were running around in the confirmation suits of their fathers, and they installed mirrors and chrome on their scooters. Then the wealthy „Poppers“ discovered the scooters. Parts of the mods grabbed the suits back into the closet, shaved their hair and cutted down their Vespas. They called themselves „Scooter Boys“ and today they are the largest group in the scooter scene: about 2,000 people in Germany, plus a few intrepid women. ‚SCOOTERZINE‘, an Austrian scooter magazine, has just conducted a thorough exhaust comparison test in their January 2017 edition. The eleven pipes were tested out-of-the-box by Alexander Wahner, the owner of Wahner Motorsport who is a two-wheeler mechanic, qualified machine engineer and also a dedicated race-fan. Our SIP Road 2.0 system was victorious! “Conclusion: Although the Polini displays a clean performance curve and the highest peak-power output, its lack of a strong torque value leaves it struggling against the solid delivery of both the SIP Road and BMG exhausts. The BMG Touring can deliver decent torque in the lower and mid rev range, but becomes weak at higher revs. This makes the SIP Road Sport best performer in this comparison due to the massive torque available up to 5000 rpm to be followed by an extra portion to the end of an extended rev-range.”

SIP VESPA JOYRIDE

2017 Shortly before the imminent arrival of the annual summer holidays we enjoyed what has become a traditional event: The 15th SIP Joyride! A relaxed ‘joyride’ together on our scooters. This day is always circled with red marker pen on the office calendar! A small dip in temperature was forecast, but with fine Bavarian blue-white skies what could be more perfect? The fine weather arrived just in time as the previous night had seen the torrential sky-borne delivery of domestic pets! This might have worried a few nervous souls, but in spite of this an undeterred crowd of around 130 Vespa and Lambretta fans gathered at our SIP HQ to accompany us along the revised 80 km route from the river Lech to (and around) the Lake Ammer. The new route took us along the Lechrain countryside through the picturesque towns of Stadl and Rott and also across the Erlwiesfilz moors adjacent to the lake. Eventually we all rode in to carpark of the idyllic Froschgartl lakeside beer garden, the venue for the first planned stop of the trip. With the scenic Lake Ammer

panorama as a backdrop there was a barbecue and bar to refresh us all for the following journey up the sacred mountain, the location of the Andechs monastery, to each receive an individual blessing from Father Valentin wishing us all safe and accident-free travel. Between Lake Pilsen and Lake Woerth we passed through Inning and Greifenberg to reach Armin‘s vintage service station. Our Italian Siperia chef, Salvatore, removed his helmet and got his pizza pusher out to make loads of pizza with his pizza oven-equipped Ape trike which brought the afternoon to a relaxed end while enjoying beautiful sunshine and talk of scooters. Many thanks to the staff of the Froschgartl Father Valentin and of course Armin and his ‚Celentanos‘! Once more an enjoyable, accident-free ride together! Fender light feeling: as early as in January our customer Frank told me that he wanted to organize a fender light Vespa rally. He had already been at many events over the last few years, he liked a lot of things, some details he did not like as much and he would like to organize a rideout where everything would be perfect from his point of view.

And so the planning went off and so much as early as now: his first meeting, the „Trofeo della Baviera“ was exceptionally well organized! About 80 Wideframe Vespas met early at 7:30am in the north of Munich, and there was breakfast, a lovingly hand-sewn goodie bag with a nice T-Shirt and much more for everyone. The participants started in 30 seconds distance and the roadbook had all the navigation turns. Most drivers did this tour in small groups and so the scavenger hunt went through the heart of Munich out to Starnberger See. Here again an extra praise to Frank is due, the scenic route through the smallest streets, groves, along the river Isar through the Bavarian alpine upland was indeed phenomenally beautiful! Short photo-stop at the lake and further on to the checkpoint with lunch-time in Murnau on the beautiful Staffelsee with great mountain scenery. Also the return was a pure pleasure trip, across the picturesque Pfaffenwinkel past the Hohen Peissenberg and on the west bank of the Ammersee back to Unterschleißheim. Instead of going for victory, we had an ice cream in the munich old town and cruised along the impressive Leopoldstrasse. Back at the start there was much to talk about at the dinner with the awards for the winners. As it is, Frank wants to do a rally again next year, one should be fast at the registration. In contrast to the last few seasons visit by members of our staff to their location in the centre of Landsberg, this time we invited them all over to our brand new premises! Following the formalities with their official entry in our visitors book, the guest were completely fascinated by the collection of scooters in our showroom and used the opportunity for posing in many snapshots and selfies – the SIP tour continued into the warehouse area where more fun was had by our guests riding as passengers around with our staff operating the fork-lift trucks between the hi-rise shelving. Finally we took them through the offices and arranged our next meeting, probably involving pizza from our very own SIPeria!

time in a row, the SOS Children‘s Village with a donation of 4,000 Euros. SOS Director Christoph Rublack (centre) was very pleased with the check, Bettina Thomamüller (left side, goods receipt), Maximilian Reiter (sales), Andreas Rabl (purchase) and Lucks Vimol (shipping) presented in Dießen. He retaliated with a tour of the SOS Children‘s Village, where the employees of the Landsberg based mailorder shop also visited the residential group of unaccompanied refugees.

The LML Vespa is a great, affordable introduction to the Vespa scene. As such, we have expanded our range to include to LML 4-stroke models and offer an entire supply of spare parts for the Star models, for example. What’s more, a large number of Vespa parts in our range are also suitable for the LML models, and vice versa. The quality of LML vehicles and parts has greatly improved over the past years and they have also become a PIAGGIO supplier. Unfortunately, LML began to restructure the company once again in 2016, meaning on occasion they are either slow to supply parts, or they are uncertain whether they can. However, as we have great stock availability, we can hopefully bypass this process without any supply shortages.
