The Alpine country of Switzerland sports dozens of innovative, eye-popping buildings and gorgeous interior designs by internationally renowned architects, making it one of Europe’s top architecture meccas. Discover Germany takes a look at which buildings should be visited on your next trip.

There are many reasons to visit Switzerland, including great museums, the natural surroundings, enchanting old towns, bustling city centres, exciting exhibitions or the wonderful food (think chocolate, cheese, wine). However, what many visitors overlook is the wealth of impressive architecture from past and present. After all, in addition to many medieval buildings, the country has a vast range of contemporary architecture on offer. Let us take a look at some.

Built in Bern by architect Renzo Piano, this impressive building houses a museum complex which honours artist Paul Klee. Its distinctive look enchants with three steel and glass ‘hills’ and it looks almost like the building grows right out of the grassy field.

The ‘Messe Basel’ can be found in Basel. Built by the famous pair of architects, Herzog & de Meuron, the extension to the Messe Basel exhibition centre has become a trademark of Basel’s cityscape. The star architects replaced two of the older halls with an extension that stacks three new ten-metre-high halls on top of each other. The brushed aluminium clads make this extension a real eye-catcher not to be missed.

Built in 2009 in Zermatt, the ‘Monte Rosa hut’ is a mountain refuge of the special kind. Designed by the ETH Zurich team, it is “Switzerland’s most complex wooden building”, according to them. Not only looking impressive, the Monte Rosa hut also has stainless-steel foundation, an aluminium outer shell and a computer-controlled energymanagement system with solar panels. In other words – it combines cutting-edge architecture with sustainable technology.

The five-star luxury hotel’s spa area is something rather extraordinary, visually. Designed in 2003 by Swiss-born Mario Botta and associate architects GPL Tschuggen Arosa Salvatore, the spa area’s outer appearance reminds visitors of the calm and sacredness of the mountain landscape that surrounds the hotel. It needs to be seen to be believed! In the following special theme, we take a look at some of Switzerland’s top architects, as well as Switzerland’s interior design elite and their impressive projects. Get inspired!

“Ethical, envisioning, uplifting, timeless”, that is how Barbara Martinuzzi describes her work. The Zurich-based interior designer focuses on tailored design processes to fulfill her clients’ individual needs and showcase their own personality.

“The most interesting and fascinating part of my job is to work with different and multicultural characters, and to be able to create unique spaces that reflect the personality of the owner at its very best,” says Barbara Martinuzzi. A good example of her work is the Italian Restaurant Doppio Gusto in Pfäffikon, which has been awarded ‘Best Leisure Interior Europe 2020-2021’ by the International Property Award in London.

In recent years in particular, interior design has become more important to private clients. “The pandemic has further changed the way we live, work and unwind, and it showed us how important it is to live in a harmonic and positive environment,” explains Barbara Martinuzzi on the importance of private spaces. Interiors are something of a personal business card, showing friends, family members or business partners who we are and how we want to be seen. One of Barbara Martinuzzi’s most recent projects for private clients has been ‘The Nest’, three high-end apartments facing Lake Lucerne. “The amazing nature that surrounds the property will be our main inspiration for the interiors,” concludes Barbara Martinuzzi.

„Es ist für mich am interessantesten und faszinierendsten, mit verschiedenen und multikulturellen Charakteren zusammenzuarbeiten und in der Lage zu sein, einzigartige Räume zu schaffen, die die Persönlichkeit ihres Besitzers widerspiegeln“, sagt Barbara Martinuzzi. Ein gutes Beispiel für ihre Arbeit ist das italienische Restaurant Doppio Gusto in Pfäffikon, das bei den International Property Awards mit dem ‚Best Leisure Interior Europe 2020-2021‘ ausgezeichnet wurde.

Insbesondere in den letzten Jahren ist Innendesign für private Kunden immer wichtiger geworden. „Die Pandemie hat weiter verändert, wie wir leben, arbeiten und uns erholen und sie hat uns gezeigt, wie wichtig es ist, in einer harmonischen und positiven Umgebung zu wohnen“, sagt Barbara Martinuzzi über die Wichtigkeit privater Räume. Innenräume sind eine persönliche Visitenkarten, die Freunden, Familienmitgliedern oder Geschäftspartnern zeigen, wer wir sind und wir gesehen werden wollen. Eines der neuesten Projekte, das Barbara Martinuzzi für Privatkunden umsetzt, ist das ‘Nest‘, drei exklusive Apartments mit Blick auf den Vierwaldstättersee. „Die großartige Natur, die das Gebäude umgibt, wird unsere Hauptinspiration für die Innengestaltung sein“, sagt Barbara Martinuzzi abschließend.

Based in the heart of Lugano, Switzerland, the young team of architects at atelier AMC SA is leading the way to contemporary architecture that is both adaptable to our society’s future needs and works in wonderful harmony with the existing surroundings.

Atelier AMC first opened its doors in 2007 and since then has gained a reputation for outstanding architecture in Ticino and beyond. The studio successfully supervises projects from the first sketch through to construction, interior design and even the final marketing. It also offers property management and consultancy services.

The client base is very varied, but the studio’s particular strength is in residential constructions including single and multi-family homes. Recently, it has also been involved in the design of museum buildings across the world.

Following a multidisciplinary approach, three main steps shape the creative process, as founder and CEO Michele Moser explains. Firstly, the interaction with the already existing surroundings is assessed, followed by an analysis of the internal spatial requirements to achieve maximum comfort in the new space. “Thirdly, the future needs of society are examined in order to design spaces that can be adapted over time to different types of users,” Moser adds.

The stunning Casa Duecento at the shore of Lake Maggiore is an outstanding example. Blending in seamlessly between scenic wooded hills and this spectacular body of water, it is the ideal place for peaceful living. The magnificent villa captures the maximum amount of external light thanks to strategically placed skylights and large windows – not only providing light even in the winter months, but also allowing nature to express its beauty and its seasonal transformations all year round.

Another iconic example is Ville Corognola, which again combines the wild charm of the mountains with the serenity of Lake Maggiore. Made from raw concrete, it communicates the mountainous theme and is reminiscent of rock emerging from the ground. ”The fusion of architecture and landscape is the driving force behind this project, made difficult by the steep slope of the land and difficult vehicular access, which is not in contrast with nature but draws its strength from it,” Moser points out.

Both buildings are testimony to the fact that atelier AMC does not merely incorporate the surroundings of any new build, but does so carefully and beautifully – with always breathtaking results.

A modular housing concept designed to reduce the impact on nature and make high-end architecture more accessible. Various technologies complement the modular off-the-grid vision.

The central idea behind sustainable housing is to improve the overall quality of life whilst simultaneously reducing our carbon footprint. To achieve this, we need a holistic approach that includes modular and expandable housing, smart building service technology, renewable and sustainable energy solutions, as well as other technological advancements and innovations.

Founded on these principles, W&P Engineering has set out to tackle the challenges brought on by climate change and transform the way we live and consume.

A strategic collaboration between W&P Engineering (www.wpeng.net), MIMA HOUSING (www.mimahousing.com) and Felix Schmid, founder of heed media (www.heed.media), sparked the development of the MUDAR project in Portugal —a forward-thinking concept offering housing solutions for residential buildings and hotels (www.mudar.house). MUDAR’s mission is to create self-sufficient, sustainable housing that combines technically practical solutions with high-end, contemporary architecture. The entire project development is in line with the European Green Deal’s broad objectives.

MUDAR has developed a system that facilitates a circular form of living with the promise of minimising the environmental impact. The power of this holistic concept lies within the combination of innovative technologies and prefabricated modular homes adaptable to any environment and place while also adjustable in size.

When it comes to refined designs for private homes, Meier Architekten never fails to meet high expectations with some surprising solutions, while never leaving anything to chance.

“We create the shell for a fulfilling home space,” explains architect and owner Egon Meier. “Our objects stand for thoughtful design and high quality, while we highlight the particular within the generality of everyday life.” Well chosen materials combined with a very Swiss eye for excellent craftsmanship

The lime sandstone fireplace – centrepiece of the living and dining area, without obstructing the view. support the architectural concept. The result is always an exquisite, elegant and modern design with a high-end finish.

The best example of the above is the project ‘358’, a private home set smack in the centre of a village near Zurich with seemingly no privacy guaranteed at all. On top of this challenge in itself came the client’s wish for absolute transparency for the entire living space.

These supposed opposites were met with a “strike of design genius”, by matching the glass walls with slightly set apart natural stone ones, allowing for light and air to penetrate the living quarters while providing complete privacy at the same time. To the back, the house opens towards an influx of light and a stunning view of Zurich’s iconic mountain.

The ceiling-high windows open across the edges, allowing the outer to seamlessly merge with the inner. As a major element throughout the design, the idea of modifiable transparency also inspired the interior structure: for example, with specifically constructed revolving doors opening onto a SPA-like bath area. A 50-centimetre-wide gap between ceiling and wall allows for light to penetrate from the east and west, guaranteeing a light-filled, airy living space throughout the day. A zen-like walk-in wardrobe at the end of the corridor completes this dream home for many.

For Egon Meier and his team, it is crucial to create a fitting environment by fulfilling the wishes and meeting the needs of their clients: “We make sure to get to know them and their environment in detail, learning about their very own perspective on life.” This engaged and engaging concept allows Meier Architekten to create a cut-tomeasure home environment for a meaningful and sustainable life.

„Wir gestalten die Hülle des heimischen Lebens“, erklärt Architekt und Inhaber Egon Meier: „Unsere Objekte zeugen von durchdachtem Design und hochstehender Qualität, indem wir dem Alltäglichen das Besondere entlocken.“ Ausgesuchte Materialien und ein typisch schweizerisches Auge für hochwertige Handwerkskunst unterstützen dieses architektonische Konzept. Das Ergebnis ist ein exquisit ausgeführtes, elegantes und modernes Design mit High-End Finish.

Herausragendes Beispiel ist das Projekt ‚358‘, ein Privathaus mitten in einem Dorf nahe Zürich gelegen, dessen lokale Voraussetzungen zunächst alles andere als Privatsphäre zu versprechen schienen. Hinzu kam der Wunsch des Kunden nach Transparenz für alle Wohnbereiche. Dieser zunächst vermeintlich unlösbare Widerspruch wurde durch einen ‚gestalterischen Geniestreich’ aufgehoben: Die Glaswände wurden jeweils mit leicht versetzten Natursteinwänden gekoppelt, sodass Licht und Luft weiterhin einfallen können, während gleichzeitig ein völliger Sichtschutz gewährleistet ist. Zur Rückseite öffnet sich das Haus mit immensem Lichteinfall zu einem wunderbaren Ausblick auf den Hausberg von Zürich.

Bodenlange Fenster lassen sich übereck öffnen und ermöglichen so einen nahtlosen Übergang von Außen nach Innen. Als Hauptelement diente die Idee der wandelbaren Transparenz auch dem Innendesign: So öffnen sich zum Beispiel speziell gefertigte, drehbare Türelemente zu einem SPAähnlichen Badebereich. Ein 50 cm breiter Spalt zwischen Decke und Mauer erlaubt zudem, dass Licht auch von Osten und Westen einfällt, sodass die Innenbereiche über den gesamten Tag hinweg von Luft und Licht durchflutet sind. Als I-Tüpfelchen dient ein begehbares Ankleidezimmer mit Zen-Appeal.

Die Bedürfnisse und Wünsche ihrer Kunden zu erfüllen um eine für sie stimmige Wohnwelt entstehen zu lassen ist für Egon Meier und sein Team eine Herzensangelegenheit. Der Architekt betont: „Wir lernen den Bauherrn und seine Umwelt genau kennen, um seine Sichtweisen zu verstehen.“ Dieses engagierte und verbindliche Konzept erlaubt Meier Architekten, maßgeschneiderte Lösungen für das zukünftige Zuhause zu entwickeln, für ein nachhaltiges und emotional erfüllendes Lebensumfeld.

Tanja Fischbach offers: “Our experience shows that the most important factor is to feel at home in a warm, opulently equipped sphere. In a way, these are basic human needs.” Speaking about the recent past, this concept may well be therapeutic – after years of pandemic-induced asceticism, people are striving to make up for the lack of abundance: “Guests and customers are more likely to linger in lovely, lush rooms filled with a warm, light-filled atmosphere. A backlog demand for consumerism is not to be underestimated.”

Known as a gastronomy-orientated company since 1994, Fischbach & Aberegg AG nowadays engage in interior, architectural and design concepts across the sectors. Over the past few years, the office has been engaged in more than 200 projects for hotels and restaurants, jewellers and residences as well as private clients, through to product design. With core principles such as credibility, openness and flexibility, the competencies clearly lie with the planning and realisation of challenging, complex high-end tasks. Das ist ein Urbedürfnis des Menschen.“ Bezogen auf die unmittelbare Vergangenheit ist dieses Konzept sogar potentiell therapeutisch: Nach Jahren der Umsicht und Enthaltsamkeit in der eher asketisch orientierten Pandemiezeit mögen die Menschen heute eher den Ausgleich suchen: „Zudem halten sich Gäste und Kunden länger auf und konsumieren mehr, wenn sie von einem lieblichen Sphäre umhüllt werden. Der Nachholbedarf an Genuss und Konsum ist groß.“

MINIMHOUSE is a groundbreaking new housing concept developed by U15 Architectes. It stands for made-to-measure, integrative and sustainable housing for all.

Efficient and flexible, as well as socially responsible, the project allows individual living with strong social connections through shared resources, with the goal of both land- and housing ownership, for all social groups. Individually scalable and based on an efficient and direct connection with the natural surroundings, MINIMHOUSE thus presents a new formula for modern housing in dense rural or peri-urban areas.

A 2018 research study by the Federal Office of Culture indicated that 70 per cent of Swiss citizens aspire to live in individual housing. As both an alternative and a complement to the more traditional or vertically orientated designs for urbanisation, rapidly changing conditions require a softer, more integrative living concept with shared land, components and green resources. The pandemic proved another unexpected source of inspiration for MINIMHOUSE: uncovering the questionable economics of commuting and revealing ideas for a new, more locally orientated work-life balance, as well as self-sufficiency.

As an answer to a specific request, U15 Architectes started the MINIMHOUSE project three years ago. Various studies and the completion of the first projects have since demonstrated the feasibility of the concept.

MINIMHOUSE means humanised living efficiently assembled, sustainable and independent. Designed as an ensemble or ‘cluster’, it allows a direct connection to the natural surroundings based on the shared usage of land, water, air and light. Inhabitants occupy the territory progressively and organically, following a concerted approach. Their houses grow from a determined system basis according to their evolving needs. Thus, the concept offers the ideal balance of private and public space.

This new form of processual architecture presents an alternative to the usual collective urbanisation practices in situations of transition between rural and urban spaces. Available in variable sizes, it grows reasonably in proportion to the needs of its inhabitants and is progressively implemented with shared infrastructure. Thus, it responds to the expectations of diversified social groups in a measured way.

MINIMHOUSE attempts to overcome the antagonisms of ‘individual vs. collective’, ‘modest vs. elaborate’, ‘traditional vs. contemporary’ and ‘sustainable vs. performing’: these contradictions are being resolved by combining manifold individualisation options with being part of a holistic social living concept at the same time.

MINIMHOUSE allows for organically growing ensemble housing by way of components, added to a defined basis. Maximally compact yet individually scalable, living and work areas are grouped around a central tech core. Formally, MINIMHOUSE is a modernised version of a housing-based, parallelepipedic shape with a gable roof – sharing the most expressive elements just as in vernacular architecture. From a catalogue of a limited number of components, the building is planned with the owner, optimising surface, shell and interior organisation through to finish, generating a house of personalised size and cost.

Following the idea of land parsimony and the horizontal vs. the vertical, MINIMHOUSE proposes an alternative to the usual amalgam of form and density. The result is a more organically grown, flatter laid-out but dense community, with a rich social life motivated by co-sharing both land and resources, as opposed to using the land for recreational purposes only.

The project is dedicated to individuals or social groups who are sensitive to the environment and the respectful use of the territory. The light, flexible construction is an ideal solution for all those who wish to become homeowners on enriched and mutualised land. Its final objective is to democratise individual housing by making it accessible to a large number of people.

Architecturally energetic while environmentally and socially efficient, MINIMHOUSE demonstrates that the traditional model of collective housing is not dogmatic and/or irrevocable. Instead, MINIMHOUSE caters to a modern, sustainably-orientated society that favours building and land parsimony, boosts local economy and opts for a return to the land and the development of socially rich and diverse communities.

For 2022, MINIMHOUSE plans various projects for individual, collective and communal housing and aims to develop its first components shop where users will be able to purchase new building parts as needed. This shop is to be managed by local suppliers in addition to their existing businesses – local connection as the key to new holistic living and housing.

Das an die Hochschule Ansbach angegliederte Institut für Führungs- und Fachkräfteentwicklung CETPM bietet Antworten auf diesen Wandel.

„Wir haben uns auf das Thema Operational Excellence spezialisiert, also auf die Optimierung von produktiven und administrativen Vorgängen. Unsere Seminare und Lehrgänge mit Hochschulzertifikat sind zielgruppengenau, daher ist unser Lösungsportfolio entsprechend umfangreich“, betont Institutsleiter Prof. Dr. Constantin May.

Die von CETPM angebotenen Weiterbildungen legen einen besonderen Fokus auf die Förderung und Weiterentwicklung der beruflichen und persönlichen Kompetenzen der Teilnehmer. May erklärt: „Hierfür haben wir ein einmaliges didaktisches Konzept entwickelt, bei dem es vor allem um ‚Action Learning‘ geht – also darum, Prozesse anhand von realen Beispielen zu begreifen und zu verbessern. Der ‚Lean Production Master‘ beispielsweise ist ein Seminar in einer Lehrfabrik, in dem die Teilnehmer lernen, kürzere Produktlebenszyklen und kleinere Losgrößen besser in den Griff zu bekommen und gleichzeitig möglichst viel Wert für den Kunden zu schaffen.“

Neben dem neuen Konzept mit dem mutmachenden Namen ‚Die Erfolgsmacher’, ist nun auch das Programm 2022 fertig, und kann bequem von der Homepage des Instituts heruntergeladen werden.

Das deutsche Steuerrecht ist komplex. Es ändert sich permanent, so dass es eine Herausforderung ist, stets auf dem neuesten Stand zu bleiben.

„Neben den oben genannten Aspekten gab auch die Diskrepanz zwischen den Inhalten der universitären Grundausbildung und den Anforderungen der Praxis sowie oftmals didaktisch veraltete Fort- und Weiterbildungsangebote den Anstoß zur Gründung der Tax Academy. Wir wollten mit unserer Weiterbildungseinrichtung ein attraktives Angebot schaffen, das den Zugang zum Thema Steuern erleichtert“, erklärt Initiator und Gründungsgesellschafter Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kessler.

Das aus diesen Überlegungen heraus entstandene innovative Fortbildungsangebot konzentriert sich auf die Themen Bilanz- und Steuerrecht und ist für Einsteiger, Fortgeschrittene und Profis gleichermaßen geeignet.

Die Online-Lehrgänge beispielsweise richten sich an Mitarbeiter*innen in Kanzleien und Unternehmen, die sich im Bereich Bilanz- und Steuerrecht weiterbilden möchten. „Da die Steuerlehre in der Hochschulausbildung immer weniger Platz einnimmt, reicht das Wissen von Berufseinsteiger*innen leider oft für den Alltag einer Kanzlei nicht aus. Dafür haben wir unsere OnboardingProgramme entwickelt“, führt der deutschlandweit hochangesehene Steuerexperte Kessler aus. Neben den Absolventen gehören auch angehende Steuerberater*innen zur Zielgruppe. Aus gutem Grund. „Bei den Steuerberaterexamen ist die Durchfallquote mit 50 Prozent relativ hoch. Eine intensive und vor allem nachhaltige Prüfungsvorbereitung mit unseren speziell konzipierten Vorbereitungskursen, zu denen auch die Vermittlung einer speziellen Klausurlösungsstrategie gehört, lohnt sich daher auf jeden Fall.“

Dann zielt das Kursangebot der Tax Academy doch eher auf diejenigen, die bereits Kenntnisse im Bereich Bilanz- und Steuerrecht haben?

„Nein, nicht nur. Unsere Erfahrung hat gezeigt, dass gerade auch Neueinsteiger*innen von unserem Angebot profitieren können. Zudem bieten wir seit kurzem auch OnlineProgramme für Steuerfachangestellte an und führen so auch die absoluten Fachneulinge sozusagen spielerisch an das Thema heran“, betont der Steuerfachmann.

Ein besonderes Merkmal der Weiterbildungskurse der Tax Academy sind somit neben den hochaktuellen Inhalten auch die Art der Wissensvermittlung. Denn hier setzt man ganz auf moderne Technik. „Wir vermitteln praxisrelevantes Wissen auf hohem Niveau. Dazu bedienen wir uns eines Medienmixes aus Online-Trainings und leicht verständlichen und attraktiv aufgebauten Skripten. Alle Lernenden erhalten zudem einen Lernfahrplan mit definierten Lernzielen. Ihre Lernfortschritte können unsere Teilnehmer*innen mit den Online-Trainings und einer eigens entwickelten App überprüfen. So eignen sie sich nicht nur vertieft Wissen an, sondern können darüber hinaus selbst frei entscheiden, wann sie lernen wollen. Unsere Kurse sind daher nicht nur inhaltlich und didaktisch, sondern auch zeitlich die beste Weiterbildungsalternative für jede Lebenssituation.“
