Multi-award-winning mezzo soprano Raphaela Mangan sings favourite arias by four of opera’s most memorable characters: Massenet’s Charlotte (the sorrowful ‘Va! Laisse couler mes larmes’), Donizetti’s ill-fated royal mistress Leonora (the wrenching ‘O mio Fernando’), Bizet’s Carmen with her coquettish Seguidilla and Gluck’s Orpheus with the sublime ‘Che farò senza Euridice?’ Deluxe French orchestral rarities – Chabrier’s dramatic Gwendoline Overture, Pierné’s sumptuous Sérénade and Fauré’s glowingly beautiful Nocturne – and the exhilarating Bacchanale from Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila add colour, grandeur and pathos of their own. American style and swagger is to the fore in a rousing programme as we dance along with the era-defining music of Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer and a brace of infectious Ragtime classics, and march to the thrilling pomp of John Philip Sousa’s stirring Semper Fidelis and anthemic The Stars and Stripes Forever. Trombonist Clara Daly Donnellan – youngest-ever winner of the RDS Music Bursary in 2014 – makes her RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra debut with Sousa soloist and bandleader Arthur Pryor’s lyrical concert waltz Thoughts of Love and the evocative Romance by Weber, whose Der Freischütz Overture provides a magical curtain raiser. Soprano Mairead Buicke leads a lyrical lunchtime of Italian operatic favourites to pull on the heartstrings and quicken the pulse. Poet of the heart Puccini is to the fore with the blissful ‘Si, mi chiamano Mimì’ and tender ‘Donde lieta usci’ from La bohème. Tosca’s ‘Vissi d’arte’ provides heart-rending drama of its own, ‘O mio babbino caro’ is one of the most sublime arias in all opera. Making a welcome return, the exciting young Belfast-born conductor Courtney Lewis (Assistant Conductor with the New York Philharmonic) promises emotion and drama aplenty in Rossini’s animated Overture to The Silken Ladder, Ponchielli’s effervescent Dance of the Hours (La Gioconda) and exhilarating Triumphal March and Ballet from Verdi’s Aida. The attractive, love-lit Overture to Berlioz’s late Shakespearean comedy Beatrice and Benedict provides the perfect appetiser for Franck’s mighty Symphonic Variations, a work of challenging virtuosic demands for both soloist – 2012 RDS Music Bursary recipient Máire Carroll (first and only pianist to win this prestigious award) – and conductor – the Malaysian Philharmonic’s rising star Ciarán McAuley. Ravel’s charming and colourful ballet suite Mother Goose brings an array of fairy-tale characters vividly to life to complete a trio of delightful French fancies.

Spend lunch in the romantic surrounds of a gypsy encampment deep in the Hungarian plains. Heralded by Berlioz’s stirring Hungarian March, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s co-leader Elaine Clark steps out of the orchestra for Ravel’s ecstatic Tzigane and Rachmaninov’s haunting Vocalise. Gavin Maloney conducts Debussy’s hypnotic Clair de Lune, a thrilling Hungarian rhapsody and bracing dance by Liszt and Brahms, with Strauss’s rousing polka Éljen à Magyar! a fast gallop to speed you back to work.

Schubert’s lively, lyrically-accented, drama-filled Rosamunde Overture sets the scene for the spirited and delightfully bouyant Fourth Horn Concerto by Mozart, its characterful virtuoso solo horn performed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s own Bethan Watkeys (‘Watkey’s playing is inviting as she handles the complexities of Mozart’s music with confidence’ Golden Plec). With its captivating and hypnotic melodies, Strauss’s By the Beautiful Blue Danube provides an elegant diversion before the exhilarating martial pomp of Suppé’s Light Cavalry Overture with a vivacious horn to the fore.

Following the great success of our 2014 movie music concert with Dave Fanning, Dave returns to present an evening of golden musical memories from the silver screen’s greatest composers. Iconic scores from legendary Oscar winners to modern classics, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind, Out of Africa, Moulin Rouge and West Side Story; symphonic spectacle with Star Wars, Gladiator and Superman; stirring themes with The Magnificent Seven, Pirates of the Caribbean and, of course, James Bond; and Broadway pizazz ranging from Chicago to ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’.
