Connemara baritone and Opera Hub Emerging Artist with Opera Theatre Company, Rory Musgrave joins the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra for the first of their October lunchtime concerts featuring popular opera arias. The programme includes Rossini’s thrilling tongue-twister ‘Largo al factotum’ (Barber of Seville), Bizet’s rousing Toreador Song (Carmen), Puccini’s yearning declaration of love ‘Questo amor, vergogna mia’ (Edgar), the noble leave-taking of life by Verdi’s Don Carlo, ‘Per me giunto...O Carlo, ascolta’ and Hamlet’s hymnal to wine, ‘O vin, dissipe la tristesse’, by Ambroise Thomas.

The ‘warm, supple lucidity’ (Sunday Times) of mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty promises a lunchtime treat with Gluck’s bravura lament ‘Addio, addio o miei sospiri’ (Orfeo ed Euridice), two very different love songs by Mozart: the imploring ‘Voi che sapete’ (Marriage of Figaro) and emphatic ‘Parto, parto ma tu ben mio’ (La clemenza di Tito). And two Cinderellas, courtesy of the sublime coloratura of Rossini’s ‘Non più mesta’ (La Cenerentola) and Massenet’s touching ‘Allez, laissez-moi seul’ (Cendrillon).

Mezzo Kate Allen (‘a force of nature’, LA Times) joins conductor Gavin Maloney for music exalting the majesty of the Christmas message (Bach’s ‘Bereite dich, Zion’, ‘O thou that tellest...’ from Handel’s Messiah) and revelling in its magical exuberance (Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers, Gluck’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits). Orchestra Leader Helena Wood (violin) steps up as soloist for the shivery beauty of Winter from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Leading soprano Cara O’Sullivan, always a hit with audiences enraptured by her glorious voice and charismatic stage presence, makes a welcome return to the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra for an evening which will bring glitter and glamour aplenty to Christmas. The wide-ranging programme ranges from all-time favourites from operas such as Rusalka, Madama Butterfly, The Barber of Seville and Romeo and Juliet to the songs and melodies without which Christmas would not be complete. Programme includes the heartfelt beauty of Dvořák’s Song to the Moon and Puccini’s ‘Un bel dì’, Rossini’s dazzling ‘Una voce poco fa’, Gounod’s joyous ‘Je veux vivre’ and Delibes’ beguiling Les filles de Cadix. Popular seasonal favourites include ‘Rejoice Greatly’ from Handel’s Messiah, O Holy Night, Joy to the World, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, The Holy City and Wexford Carol. Along the way, plenty of opportunity for audience sing-a-longs with the carols!
