Attila the Hun sings his anguished description of a dream warning him against his ill-fated attack on Rome, and all bass-baritones dream of singing ‘Ella giammai m’amò’, probably the most profound aria written for their voice in the entire operatic repertoire. Scotland, Italy and Russia frame their performance with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (also known as ‘Fingal’s Cave’), a dramatic evocation of the highland coastline. Tchaikovsky’s romantic waltz from the ballet Swan Lake leads on to the rousing overture to Rossini’s William Tell , beloved by generations of television addicts as the theme tune of ‘The Lone Ranger’.
