train, it is easy to change from one ski resort to another. Passionate, active skiers find perfectly groomed and demanding ski runs at the Kronplatz. One special feature is the “Black 5”, the five black ski runs with a slope of up to 60%. Trained instructors at the nine ski schools and the five ski kindergartens, infrastructures aimed at children such as the children’s restaurant, easy ski runs, and child-safe ski lift facilities offer the ideal conditions for a family holiday at the Kronplatz. At the Kids Safety Park, children between the ages of six and fourteen learn the FIS rules of conduct for safe skiing. All freestylers can put their jumping skills to the test at the Kronplatz Snowpark on the summit of the Kronplatz and at Korer Park near the Riscone valley terminal.

The summit of the Kronplatz is the location of the sixth Messner Mountain Museum, at an elevation of 2,275 m [7,464 ft.] The mountain forms the point of intersection of the three cultures in South Tyrol: the German, the Italian, and the Ladin. This unique location of the Kronplatz made it decisive for Reinhold Messner to build his last museum here. It will be dedicated to the subject of “Trad Adventure Alpinism” which will be illustrated

by objects from his collections. The architectural implementation of the ideas was entrusted to the studio of the world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, who is regarded as the most talented and innovative architect of our time. In order to intrude as little as possible upon the landscape and to avoid an additional obstruction of the summit, a large part of the museum will be located below ground.

Traditional shops, small boutiques, and cozy bars and cafés line the spacious Stadtgasse medieval lane and entice the visitor to stroll through the historic city center. Surrounded by the picturesque winter scenery, the ancient heart of the city once again shows more of its most charming side.

5

And what’s on offer in the wintertime is also widely varied: from ski tours in the Dolomites to guided snowshoe hikes to ice skating and curling, cross country skiing tours, or a fun sledding party on one of the numerous natural sled runs around Brunico, this is where anyone can find a suitable leisure time activity. And those who would afterwards like to ring in the evening in convivial company would do best to head to one of the après-ski locations in Riscone.

At an elevation of 835 m (2,740 ft.) above sea level, at the foot of the Kronplatz-Plan de Corones ski carousel, the city of Brunico spreads out in a wide valley basin, along with the additional communities of Perca, S. Lorenzo, Falzes, and Gais/ Villa Ottone.

MODEL PAIRS

When you’re outside the ski lodge, are you sometimes not sure which skis are yours? Then they’re certainly not unique, and definitely not from the Traam workshop. Three young men from Riscone-Reischach near BrunicoBruneck have an uncanny sense for the cutting edge. They produce their skis according to their own ideas. That’s something that really no one should ever have known. But then, they all heart about that. “Our friends just totally laughed at us,” says Markus Irschara. That was eleven years ago. At the time, the three of them cut their skis apart – in secret, or so they thought – and separated the different layers. They wanted to get to the bottom of how a ski is built, and then do ever ything better. “There are always skis that you can buy,” is what their friends told them over and over. “That’s right,” Irschara would reply, “but we always had something more to offer than the store-bought skis.” They were young and they liked to ski, especially off the slope in deep snow. The skis that they had seemed to them to be too narrow for that. “Half width,” specifies Irschara. They wanted a wide ski. Today, the market is inundated with wide freeride skis. The first homemade skis lasted for precisely two weeks. The tips came His own best customer. Markus Irschara has more than then pairs of Traam skis at home.

off and the edges broke. “We were disappointed by that,” Irschara recalls. In work overalls, he stands in the Traam workshop, two rooms in the old Kronplatz cablecar station in Riscone that used to house the ski rental shop, and he slowly pushes his cap off of his forehead. He grins and looks at Martin Clara, who buries his hands in his jeans. Both are around thirty-five. Andreas Recla, the third one of the bunch, is at home, having just become a father for the second time.

push forward. Traam skis have now been sold for five years. The pioneers have developed over twenty models, for the ski run, snow park, freeride, and touring. And during the past year, they have brought the monoski back to life, a relic from the 1980s. It is produced only on order. Traam customers

“Often, people bring in a completed drawing.” Flowers, samples of wallpaper, women’s faces, ink blots, dragons. There are some display models in the Traam showroom. The latest rage is wooden veneer. Then the new skis look like they’re from the pioneer days of winter tourism. Really retro.

are primarily from South Tyrol-Südtirol, and recently from other parts of Italy, as well. “They’re really only good skiers,” says Irschara. Last winter, the ski makers ventured into children’s skis for the first time. Irschara’s nephew wanted to learn to ski. “We didn’t want kids to go skiing on skis that were made in China,” he says laughing.

THEY ARE THEIR OWN BEST CUSTOMERS It’s all in keeping with Traam. Twenty to thirty pairs of skis leave the workshop in a year. No more than that. “We’re really not doing it to make money.” All three Traam partners are ski instructors. “Four months out of the year, we’re up on the Kronplatz on the ski slopes every day.” In the summer,

MADE WHEN AN ORDER ARRIVES Like most on the market, the Traam skis start out from a wooden core. With the assistance of templates that are stored nicely stacked on shelves, the skis are cut out from local ash or oak. A layer of fiberglass makes the ski flexible, and then the coating and printed surface are stuck on with resin. Then the ski, along with the template, is placed in a vacuum press, where it is heated and pressed for three hours. Irschara shows off a monster that completely takes up half of the room. It is

Irschara earns his money as a lumberjack, and Clara is a cabinetmaker. The skis come into existence in the evenings, or sometimes even late into the night. They are their own best customers. Each one of them has more than ten pairs of skis standing at home, for every type of snow and, in the best case, for every time of day. “Skiing is one of the most important things in life,” Irschara says. He slowly pushes his cap forward and back. “Skiing is the most important,” says Clara. And laughs.

A FOR CHILDREN The future belongs to the children. The Kronplatz Holiday Region has a big heart when it comes to children, and for that reason, it also creates especially favorable conditions so that parents can spend their happy winter vacations with their children. The ski resorts of the Kronplatz, Speikboden and Klausberg have available easy ski slopes, the best-trained skiing instructors, child-oriented infrastructures, and various courses to ski where the main focus is on safety and fun. And the ski lifts in Terento-Terenten, in the Valle AnterselvaAntholzertal, Val Casies-Gsieser Tal,and in Riva di Tures-Rein in Taufers are ideal for children, beginners, and families. In Terento, for example, the “Family Snow Days, a varied winter program for families, is offered from January 7 to

31, 2015. At the Panorama ski lift in the village center, the little ones practice their first jumps with the skiing instructors, and after the ski course, prizes are awarded at a graduation race. On top of that, there are two more exciting adventures for children: a hike by lantern light and a visit to a real farm. In the meantime, parents can enjoy some time off and can participate in guided snowshoe hikes. Skiing fun in the Kronplatz Holiday Region is guaranteed! And not to be forgotten is the fact that many hotels and pensions offer special services and assistance for kids. These range from free-time programs to playgrounds to special menus, all of which turn the vacation into a completely happy experience for the little ones.

Made for

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING … Gliding through a winter landscape covered in deep snow over the best-groomed trails.

With almost no other athletic activity are muscles and joints strengthened in this way and at the same time protected through the low impact as with cross country skiing. As a result of the motion of the arms, the breathing and consequently the oxygen absorption are intensified and, along with the legs, 80% of the body’s musculature is put to use. Above all else, cross country skiing carries with it a great deal of variety and, on top of that, it offers the possibility of enjoying the beauty of the region and the unforgettable mountain scenery. In the Kronplatz Holiday Region, some 300 km (nearly 200 miles) of cross country ski trails with groomed tracks (between 1,000 and 1,600 m/3,300 to 5,200 ft. above sea level) are found away from the hectic hustle and bustle. The majority of the trails are a part of the “Dolomiti NordicSki” skiing association, Europe’s largest cross country skiing carousel, which extends to around 1,300 km (800 miles) through all of South Tyrol-Südtirol. Events such as the Biathlon World Cup race in Anterselva-Antholz (January 22-25, 2015) or the Int. Gran Fondo Val Casies Race (February 14 and 15, 2015) have caused the sport of cross country skiing to blossom in the Holiday Region.

SNOWSHOE HIKES IN UNDISTURBED NATURE Once an important means of locomotion for the inhabitants of mountain regions in the winter, today snowshoes are trendy sports equipment. With them, it is possible to dive into the breathtaking landscape of the Holiday Region, either away from the paths or in the three nature parks: the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and the Puez-Odle Nature Park, both in the UNESCO Dolomites, and in the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park just outside them. It is possible to rent the equipment and to reserve mountain guides.

Snowshoe hikes to Monte Luta-Lutterkopf (2,145 m/7,037 ft.) - Monte SalomoneDurakopf (2,275 m/7,464 ft.) - Malga di Tesido-Taistner Alm (2,012 m/6,601 ft.)

GUIDED SKI TOURS Thanks to the magnificent mountain world, the Kronplatz Holiday Region is outstandingly suited to ski touring and offers countless delightful tour destinations, for both beginners and trained ski tourers alike. But a skitour has to be planned thoroughly, especially in consideration of the corresponding avalanche and weather situations. You can get information and tour suggestions from certified ski tour guides.

SLEDDING FUN There are approximately 30 sled runs (a total of 65 km/40 miles) in the Holiday Region. After climbing up by foot (between 30 minutes and 2.5 hours) or riding up with a cable car, there is usually a rustic inn with the possibility of a warm meal or hot drink (sleds can be rented in the valley or directly at the inns). South Tyrol-Sßdtirol’s longest sledding run at 10 km (6 miles) is located at Speikboden. One secret tip is sledding during a full moon, when the woods come to life at night.

ICE SKATING, CURLING & HOCKEY Nearly every vacation site in the region has an ice skating rink for ice princesses and hockey stars. From September to March, the matches of the HC Pustertal ice hockey team also thrill hockey fans from abroad, since HC Pustertal is among the title favorites for the Italian Serie A (the match schedule may be found at www. hcpustertal.com). Curling is available at nearly all outdoor skating areas.

ICE CLIMBING Naturally frozen waterfalls and man-made ice climbing towers are the perfect invitation to climbing. Trained ice climbing guides will accompany you on tours filled with adventure, complete with ice axes and crampons. The natural ice falls in Riva di Tures-Rein in Taufers are a secret tip for every ice climber!

CASTLE 3 TAUFERS Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers

Cadipietra

S. Giovanni

The completely furnished, very well-preserved Taufers Castle is among the largest and most beautiful castles in all of Tyrol. Children have a great time at the “hands-on armory. Art lovers will enjoy the frescoes by Renaissance artist Friedrich Pacher, while romantics will be thrilled by the picturebook castle complex itself.

BRUNICO CASTLE MMM RIPA Brunico Castle is the fifth Messner Mountain Museum of the famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner. Dive into the world of the most varied of mountain peoples. A multitude of exhibits from the everyday life of the inhabitants of different mountain regions depict the life of Sherpas, Walsers, Burusho, and many other cultural circles of the entire world.

2

NEUHAUS CASTLE Gais A hilltop, a picturesque inner courtyard, and a castle tavern: that is Neuhaus Castle. More charming than defiant, and yet the home to great spirits: Oswald von Wolkenstein spent several years of his restless life here around 1520, and the famous American poet Ezra Pound also found a refuge for himself and his family here during the turmoil of the Second World War. Today the castle houses a hospitality establishment.
