Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) is a 501(c3) non-profit organization and holds the distinction of being the only Asian provider Agency recognized by the Hudson County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office on Aging. Standing in the 1970s, there was an influx of Filipino immigrants to the State of New Jersey and because of proximity to New York City, Jersey City attracted many new immigrants. In fact, in the early 1990s, Jersey City has the largest concentration of Filipinos in the State of New Jersey. Filipino professionals in various fields of education, medical, engineering, business, and other professionals started calling Jersey City home thereby contributing to the economic renaissance of Jersey City. Filipinos started organizing the community but while there were numerous Filipino organizations in Hudson County most of them are focused on helping the Philippines. Linda Mayo, the first Asian elected official in Hudson County and former Jersey City Deputy Mayor recognized the need for a culturally competent non-profit organization. Linda Mayo pioneered the founding of PACCAL with the help of a group of World War II veterans headed by the late Sir Col, Mariano S. Aureus. Linda Mayo held the position of PACCAL, president for twelve years and since then became the Executive Director implementing programs and services. Linda Mayo is also the founder and former president of the Ladies for Rizal, Inc., New Jersey Chapter, USA an official affiliate of the “Kababaihang Rizalista, Inc.,” an international organization with headquarters based in the Philippines. The first issue tackled by PACCAL is housing for Filipino seniors. They helped seniors in the process of applying in different Jersey City Senior Housing buildings. The first successful applicants PACAL helped in Harborview Senior housing were WWII veterans and through them other Filipinos followed suit. PACCAL was the first support group of PAVO, Inc. in its fight for equity and continues to help the veterans up to the present day. Next project was voters’ registration and citizenship drives to empower the Filipino community. PACCAL also is very proud that when Sir Dennis Hayes was the Director of the Jersey City Public Library, together with Lady Linda Mayo, they worked from 1994 - 1996 to build a collection of 500 Philippine books in the Jersey City Public Libraries. The collection ranges from current form of government and economy to history, culture, arts, and heritage. PACCAL Neighborhood Center has been a haven for Filipinos in Jersey City needing information and referrals to City & County government services as well as other provider service agencies. Some of the services are information and referrals on senior entitlements; referrals to affordable medical check-ups and health services; social and recreational activities for seniors; youth classes on Philippine history, values & culture, and folk arts programs; substance abuse education & prevention; domestic violence prevention; educational forums and workshops or youth and family. PACCAL has also helped many Filipino women who are victims of domestic violence. PACCAL is a member of the Hudson County HIV/AIDS Planning Council with voting members since 2001 and has an HIV/AIDS outreach and support group. PACCAL is the current recipient of grants from the City of Jersey City, Division of Community Development; Hudson County Office on Aging, Department of Health and Human Services, Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, Office of Tourism Development. PACCAL is a community partner of Asian American Federation for the US CENSUS 2010 and NUY-Project AsPIRE and Kalusugan Coalition in the study of hypertension in the Filipino Community in Jersey City. PACCAL’s by line: If you need help and don’t know what to do, call PACCAL.

To all the women of the world, Mabuhay! Today’s generations, more than ever, has accorded women the very role they were made to play, had gradually developed distinct images they were created for, and finally given the due recognition from whatever accomplishments they achieved.

Greetings! PACCAL joins the international celebration of March as Women’s History Month and honors Filipino American Women and women of diverse ethnicities in New York and New Jersey. The tradition started in 1975 when the United Nations began its celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8 th. PACCAL started the celebration in the year 2000and spearheaded honoring Filipino and other Asian women for their achievements in their various fields of endeavors. Since then, we have consistently honored Asian women and other ethnicities through our Most Influential Women and Women of Achievements Awards. PACCAL awardees are the “crème dela crème,” the best of the very best in their own fields of expertise. They are business entreprenuers, doctors, nurses, community servants, accountants, educators, lawyers, government officials, in arts & music. They are seniors who have contributed excellently to their communities and mothers whose sacrifices to make their children fulfill their dreams are phenomenal. As the saying goes: “the hands that rock the cradle rules the world!” What more can be said of the women who makes history every day? Let us all be together in saluting PACCAL’s very own Influential Women & Women of Achievements and shout a rousing: “MABUHAY!” From the bottom of my heart, I am thankful to all our awardees, their families and friends for their generous support and their presence today. I am very grateful to the excellent Committees and PACCAL officers & volunteers for their tremendous sharing of their excellent talents and sacrifices are truly commendable. My hat is off to all of you!

No longer regarded as a member of the weaker sex or an exponent the secondary gender, the woman of today have successfully reached the level of equal footing with men… and had eventually proven their capability in every field where former excel. To celebrate and duly acknowledge women’s strong social influence, the month of March was globally earmarked for their exalted identity – hence, this event… the Women’s History Month! It’s an honor and privilege to, once again, chair this prestigious occasion as we honor the hardworking women who painstakingly climb the ladder and reached that goal they have been aiming for. It is through this humble way that we in PACCAL extend our own share to recognize and declare the impressive empowerment of women. To this year’s PACCAL WHM awardees, accept my heartfelt “Congratulations!” for uplifting the very essence of womanhood. You are all living examples of what hard work and determination could do to realize the dreams that were merely chased and obsessed. May your achievements be guiding legacy to inspire those who look up and walk behind you. Here’s a grand toast to our awardees, to our tireless supporters and honorable guests! Bottoms up and imbibe the spirits of inspiration to the last drop and hold high that flaming torch of success to herald a victory worthy of this remarkable celebration. A pleasant evening to all.

ROSE CONCEPCION BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Rosario Javier Concepcion made Whippany, New Jersey, an unincorporated community located within Hanover Township in Morris County, her new home after leaving not only the Philippines but the love of her, as well. New adjustment wasn’t much to consider for earning a living was her priority. Easily employed in Hudson Bank, being a BS Commerce degree holder with Accounting major, Rose transferred to a Nursing facility later and found a new job in a dialysis center more rewarding. Her ”unsanctioned” husband, Nilo, followed and they officially sealed their ties on October 18, 2000 in a traditional ceremony in Lakewood, New Jersey with a paramount vow not only to be joined by a law that solemnized their matrimonial relationship but to live a wedded life of blissful togetherness…in business and in pleasure unmindful of the perils they might encounter along their marital journey. Their innate business acumen and persevering ways easily grossed RJ Sariling Atin Fast Food & Oriental Grocery in Toms River, New Jersey and in just 6 years, a branch found its spot in Queens, NY. In just another couple of years, Rosario’s Ihawan was established just around the corner of 69 th Street in Woodside, Queens…a clear evidence of Rose’s Midas Touch in business. Currently, RJ Sariling Atin is under the personal management of Rocel, their first born, who reports to work from 9 AM to closing time at 9:30 PM. A young BS Biology graduate who could be mistaken for a high-schooler, Rocel plans to pursue a Dentistry course when she finds her next of kin already capable of managing and supervising their business.

CHIN GOMEZ POP PERFORMING ARTIST

Just when you thought you’ve had enough of those mediocre stage entertainers and (trying hard) copycats with the notion that there’s really a deliberate shortage of local-based talents and that the limited entertainment scene is saturated with so-so performers, then think again… for you must haven’t heard of one of the most raved and in-demand female performers who doesn’t only have the capability to entertain but could also mesmerize you with her impressive vocal tonality, pulsating rhythm and extensive vocal range. Born Anna Cristine on January 2 in Manila to Cynthia De Castro Gomez and Arnulfo Pardo Gomez, Chin is the eldest among four siblings. At a very early age, Chin freely allowed herself to fall and be enticed under the spell of the irresistible call of music publicly performing at 9.“I’ve always loved to perform. Being on center stage automatically activates my faculties signaling my readiness for the show… and I could sing all night long!” Her nightly exposures in the trendy watering hole undeniably honed her singing talent, gradually broaden her social interactive skills, developed her personality, and predictably paved way for lucratively influential opportunities. After being employed in various jobs singing opportunities still constantly came knocking at her door. Enthusiasm builds up but gradually vanished after the excitement dies. But there’s one thing that Chin looks forward to— the revival of her only passion… the resurgence of her singing career. After so many career changes music remains to be the only thing that was kept unchanged. The stagnated ember of her music was just left waiting to be ignited to incessantly be kept refulgent. Currently, Chin remains to be one of the most in-demand singers not only in popular eateries and entertainment venues but also in mainstream productions.

CRISTINA GODINEZ, ESQ LEGAL PROFESSION

Cristina is an immigration lawyer who handles cases involving work visas, family and employersponsored green cards, naturalization as well as humanitarian immigration benefits. She also serves as attorney and ad-hoc coordinator at the Migrant Center of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in NYC and has helped hundreds of non-citizens navigate US immigration law while advocating in behalf of highly vulnerable sectors of the immigrant community. Cris obtained her Law degree from the University of the Philippines and became corporate attorney at the oldest and largest law firm in the Philippines, SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan, before coming to America. - 17 -

GRACE WONG MOTHER OF THE YEAR Motherhood is something very familiar to our next awardee since she came from an incredibly huge family of 17 children. She was motivationally inspired by the two greatest women in her life: her own mother and her mother-in-law. Ever energetic and indefatigable, Grace isn’t only mother to her children and wife to husband Steven but simultaneously a moving spirit behind numerous community and faith-based fundraising events. Strong willed and stern, Grace Wong finally enjoy the sweet scent of victory when her eldest son, Jonathan, won a council seat and was the youngest (at 23) elected councilman in Mahwah’s political history. Compassionate, pious, and down-to-earth, Grace is a perfect choice as the mother on a totem pole.

DEMETRIA CORNELIO SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Just as education is a life-long process of adjustment of an individual to his physical and social environment and so is teaching… for hand in hand these two are in every way corelated and indispensable. Demetria Cornelio (Demi to colleagues) is a quintessential exponent of a true-blooded pedagogue ably equipped with limitless responsibilities to her students aside from molding their innocent minds and acting as second parent. Aptly armed with an educator’s maternal instinct Demi’s profession exceeds way beyond the four corners of the classroom and her innate concern transcends even outside the prescribed working hours. Retirement for Demi was far from being an option for she loves what she does best --- teaching. But no matter how hard she tries to stay and adhere to her advocacy; Federal law limits the working conditions of teachers with retire-able age. The ever-amiable school teacher with a munificent heart dis just that and retirement became a time to enjoy the things that she haven’t been able to do due to classroom workload and hectic working schedule. For Demi, it’s time to develop hobbies that she didn’t know she’d enjoy, and now she has all the time in world to master them. Demi keeps herself occupied with voluntarism and various organizational community services. Retirement, for her, is meant to be enjoyed… and she has no regret leaving the classrooms but admittedly miss them. Taking her much-needed respite and filling her life with enjoyable pursuits, the former classroom figure is currently a permanent fixture in almost every social event… literally catching up for lost times!

Steering Committee is a governing device used to organize key project stakeholders and empower them to “steer” a project to successful conclusion. Steering is not managing… Managing gets the job done but Steering determines what the job is to be done. So, the duties of the SC are to deliberate, make decisions, advise, provide strategic oversight, and to serve as the primary “advocate” for all the assigned initiatives. The Steering Committee aims to ensure the successful delivery of the project with productive results to benefit the organization.
