Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) is a 501(c3) non-profit organization and holds the distinction of being the only Asian provider Agency recognized by the Hudson County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office on Aging. Standing in the 1970s, there was an influx of Filipino immigrants to the State of New Jersey and because of proximity to New York City, Jersey City attracted many new immigrants. In fact, in the early 1990s, Jersey City has the largest concentration of Filipinos in the State of New Jersey. Filipino professionals in various fields of education, medical, engineering, business, and other professionals started calling Jersey City home thereby contributing to the economic renaissance of Jersey City. Filipinos started organizing the community but while there were numerous Filipino organizations in Hudson County most of them are focused on helping the Philippines. Linda Mayo, the first Asian elected official in Hudson County and former Jersey City Deputy Mayor recognized the need for a culturally competent non-profit organization. Linda Mayo pioneered the founding of PACCAL with the help of a group of World War II veterans headed by the late Sir Col, Mariano S. Aureus. Linda Mayo held the position of PACCAL, president for twelve years and since then became the Executive Director implementing programs and services. Linda Mayo is also the founder and former president of the Ladies for Rizal, Inc., New Jersey Chapter, USA an official affiliate of the “Kababaihang Rizalista, Inc.,” an international organization with headquarters based in the Philippines. The first issue tackled by PACCAL is housing for Filipino seniors. They helped seniors in the process of applying in different Jersey City Senior Housing buildings. The first successful applicants PACAL helped in Harborview Senior housing were WWII veterans and through them other Filipinos followed suit. PACCAL was the first support group of PAVO, Inc. in its fight for equity and continues to help the veterans up to the present day. Next project was voters’ registration and citizenship drives to empower the Filipino community. PACCAL also is very proud that when Sir Dennis Hayes was the Director of the Jersey City Public Library, together with Lady Linda Mayo, they worked from 1994 - 1996 to build a collection of 500 Philippine books in the Jersey City Public Libraries. The collection ranges from current form of government and economy to history, culture, arts, and heritage. PACCAL Neighborhood Center has been a haven for Filipinos in Jersey City needing information and referrals to City & County government services as well as other provider service agencies. Some of the services are information and referrals on senior entitlements; referrals to affordable medical check-ups and health services; social and recreational activities for seniors; youth classes on Philippine history, values & culture, and folk arts programs; substance abuse education & prevention; domestic violence prevention; educational forums and workshops or youth and family. PACCAL has also helped many Filipino women who are victims of domestic violence. PACCAL is a member of the Hudson County HIV/AIDS Planning Council with voting members since 2001 and has an HIV/AIDS outreach and support group. PACCAL is the current recipient of grants from the City of Jersey City, Division of Community Development; Hudson County Office on Aging, Department of Health and Human Services, Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, Office of Tourism Development. PACCAL is a community partner of Asian American Federation for the US CENSUS 2010 and NUY-Project AsPIRE and Kalusugan Coalition in the study of hypertension in the Filipino Community in Jersey City. PACCAL’s by line: If you need help and don’t know what to do, call PACCAL. -3-

Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League 380 Monmouth St., Jersey City, NJ 07302

Greetings, everyone…! Once again, time has come to pompously celebrate and duly acknowledge the various accomplishments of women all over the globe. It wasn’t just earmarked today to praise and recognize what our female populace have painstakingly achieved and how much they have effectually impacted humanity… but this is significantly a special moment when we ought to give credit where it is due. Tonight, we’ll amplify women’s voices to acknowledge the past…celebrate the present…and inspire the coming generation. Women’s History month deepens our understanding about women’s contribution to the world as a whole… how far they have advanced and stand at par with their male counterparts… how significant their vast strides that catapulted them to such prestigious level… and how we value the equivalence in rights and privileges they deservingly enjoy. The annual festivity that the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) is affording to women is to fully inculcate in everyone’s mind about the noteworthy involvements and weighty legacy (that) numerous “women of substance” have efficaciously bequeathed to mankind. Incidentally, I doff my hat off to the illustrious “Women Achievers” and the lone recipient of the ”Most Influential Woman” award that PACCAL is honoring tonight…and of course, with the selfless support extended by our benevolent Honorary Chairs. Tonight’s event won’t reach its apex without the valued attendance of our friends and guests. On behalf of PACCAL, please accept my heartfelt “Thank You!” Enjoy and see you at the dancefloor!

Tonight’s event is a great motivational trial for me than just being challenged … since this event seems too big and overwhelming as my first project being the newly installed President of PACCAL while simultaneously the 2019 Women’s History Month Chair. In my humble capacity as the “guy on the helm,” allow me to extend to everyone my heartfelt “Welcome” and Thank You for your presence and support. Highlighting tonight’s occasion is none other than recognizing and honoring the escalating power and diverse contributions of women to society and the whole world. If during the early generations, women were considered the weaker sex and constantly behind men, the table has gradually turned and deliberately projected women to all arenas where only men excelled. Let’s admit that modern civilization has copiously acknowledged and respected women’s impressive capabilities and remarkable skills…despite of giving men stiff competition in almost every aspect and area. Now, we are of equal footing. Despite of all these women held tight to their mysterious and enigmatic ways…such distinct traits that perplexed men to no end. Nobody seems to know what’s going on their minds or what could be their next moves. According to Eleonore Roosevelt: “A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” This quote could easily create a fully equitable society once we fully understand women… and appreciate their capricious minds. Happy Women’s History Month celebration!

NIEVA BURDICK

Living up to the illustrious standards and upright status associated with her maiden last name serves as either a challenge or an inspiration to Nieva since the Quezon legacy has been politically carved, honorably stamped, and discerningly encompassed in the glorious annals of Philippine history. MARK ALVAREZ

Talent is indeed unlimited in the case of up-coming clothing designer Mark F. Alvarez. After having had proven his worth and capability to establish and managed Golden Kings, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of aquatic wildlife and biodiversity, he farther spread his wing span to a field he’s quite comfortable with (creative clothing design) since he, himself, is innately and passionately fashionable. He debuted his maiden collection at the Renaissance Fashion Evolution, a fashion gala jointly organized by him and his mom, dancer-choreographer Virgie F. Alvarez, where his daintily tattered and intricately patched pants and jackets were thunderously received by a huge audience of discriminating taste. A bigger leap followed closely when he joined the recently concluded NY Fashion Week and from there, much brighter plans were conceptualized. Resting on his laurels is far from Mark’s ambitiously crowded mind. Unbeknownst to many, Mark’s compassionate nature stimulated his concerns about equitable health care… thus, the founding and establishing of Agape Home Care, a family-owned company which rightly solidifies his public status as a member of the Board of Health of Tenafly, New Jersey

An active church front-runner at Grace Christian Fellowship as a Sunday teacher and worship leader, her service isn’t only confined therein… she has also participated in a short-term medical mission in the Philippines that reached out to the Badjao’s tribe. A voracious reader, Doc Marilyn’s spare time is spent with her family…listening and playing Christian music. - 21 -

ANALIA FARFAN Excellence in International Classical Dance Argentinian Analia Farfan is a professional dancer was born with a pair of terpsichorean feet, a whistle bait figure, graceful slender arms and dainty hands while innately equipped with an effervescent face and magnetic smile. A well-recognized NY International Principal Guest Artist, Actress, Model and Singer, New York-based Analia based is also an Ajkun Ballet Theater Senior Artist, a Pro Stage Tango Dancer, a National Teacher, and Choreographer. Her intense love for dance and performance readily set her primary goals in strengthening the national voice and vision for dance by advocating education centered in the arts. Analia’s unflinching dedication to her artistic creativity induced the perception of dance as a vital and accessible art form. As an advocate for dance, she seeks to influence other potential talents and relentlessly propagate the art that she loves. She graduated with honors from Maria Ruanova Institute and later studied by virtue of a scholarship at Princess Grace Academy in Monaco. She has professionally performed as principal dancer and guest artist in different Ballet companies and Operas like Pennsylvania Youth Metropolitan Opera Ballet, State Ballet of Georgia, Ray Ballet, Arjun Ballet Theater, New Jersey Ballet Company, and Athena Music Foundation in NY, among others. Currently, the statuesque Prima Ballerina is the President of Argentina of the United World Organization.

JERRILYN CALONG Senior Citizen of the Year Appreciating the status of old age, earnestly surviving extended years, and capably enjoying the mounting privileges of being one (which lot of others are deprived of) are just few of the great amenities life bountifully offers to seniors. Although old age may mean nearing or surpassing the life expectancy, our Senior Citizen of the Year, Jerrilyn Calong, doesn’t see herself close at the edge of survival. She positively feels distant from being at the state of senescence since she’s still actively employed at Shorewood Real Estate and Prodigy Network, LLC., an active member of MAEUSA, SCI, and St. Vincent Line Dancers. She may be a bona fide senior citizen but Jerrilyn refuses to slowdown in her life even if already accomplished in raising a family. Her productive career ensued after she finished Foreign Service from the Lyceum of the Philippines. A divorcee with 3 children (Jemma, a nurse in Canada; Jayrone, a watchmaker in Movado Group of Companies; and Jeraya, a Graphic Designer) and 6 grand kids, .this Mauban, Quezon native has successfully defied other monumental fears in her adult life and thought she’s getting much wiser and experienced as she grows older. What could have added to her youthful look would be her passion in singing, dancing, drawing and painting. PAN AMERICAN CONCERNED CITIZENS ACTION LEAGUE 26 FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY & DINNER DANCE

A beauty queen with a magnanimously generous heart, a dynamic community leader and organizer, an open-handed philanthropist, and an enterprising businesswoman (sole proprietor of Cherry M. Smyth Productions, LLC and CMC Collections, an in-house fashion boutique, and CMS Travel), Cherry Marmes Smyth is incredibly a renaissance woman. Independent and businessminded Cherry was crowned 2013 PHOSSO’s (Philippine Hearts and Hopes Society, Inc.) Mrs. Philippines-America. The Lanao del Norte-born lady with charismatic appeal (now Griswold, Connecticut-based) never ceases to build lofty dreams not for herself but for others where help is considered necessary. Her altruistic and philanthropic ways easily create for her a gigantic image that made her stand much taller than what she actually is. Seeking to promote the welfare of others through generous donations and fundraising events, the indefatigable KIDS Philippines, Inc. (KPI) Founder finds joy and fulfillment having had accomplished her personal mission to her countrymen… together with the able support of her equally benevolent husband, . KIDS Philippines, Inc. is fast becoming one of the most reliable among the many youth-oriented organizations providing quality education to children in need… helping and guiding them reach full potential that they may be instruments to diminish, if not totally eradicate, poverty and juvenile criminality in the next generation. The husband and wife tandem of Pete and Cherry was a magnanimous blessing to thousands of families, particularly out-of-school kids, with the educational, nutritional, and moral support they have generously accorded and selflessly given.
