In our last issue I remember hoping we were over the storms of the previous weeks. Little did I know our first magazine would land on your doorstep at the moment the whole country went into lockdown. While the timing couldn’t have been worse for this magazine, I decided to do my best to support our local businesses and push ahead with this issue. This month we have some yummy recipies for gin cocktails and a refreshing dip for the barbecue, courtesy of Zena Leech-Calton of Love Norwich Food. There’s also a motoring article explaining how tyres are on the brink of massive change, courtesy of Alison Runham. Although there are no events to bring you this issue (for obvious reasons!) I’ve more than filled the void with lots of local businesses who are operating safely - please continue to support them if you can!

A Mexican Inspired Snack for the BBQ C E V ICH E The raw fish used here is cooked by lime acid. Use tortilla chips to scoop up the refreshing goodness. This makes a good dipping bowl full – multiply as needed.

INGR E DI E NTS

150-200g firm fish skinned and pin boned*

Ready to fire up the barbecue? Pickerings of Norwich are offering free delivery of their freshly made meat products to Costessey. See back page for details.

2 limes, juiced ½ small red onion, finely chopped or diced ½ - 1 green chilli, finely diced

1 tomato, very small diced ½ - 1 tablespoon virgin olive oil 1 tbsp coriander leaf, chopped Pinch of salt, pepper and sugar

METH O D

Prep the fish by chopping in to small dice – toss in the lime with a pinch of salt. Cover and chill in the fridge for an hour – this will marinate the fish with the lime, sort of cooking it – hence it can be eaten raw. Meanwhile prep all the other ingredients, mix together. Chill for up to an hour before needed – the fresher the better. Serve with tortilla chips to dip, or as a starter with a mixed leaf salad.

New Tyres on the Road by Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

T

yres have changed very little since pneumatic radial tyres became the standard in the 1970s. But tyres, like cars themselves, have entered a period of rapid development. Today, tyre producers have to consider not only safety, durability and performance, but sustainability as well.

Today’s Tyre Innovations The Contiseal Tyre has been available since 2008 and now comes in multiple sizes and weather types. Its in-built Contiseal sealant layer can seal small punctures of up to 5mm diameter, allowing 95% of journeys to continue post-puncture and reducing risky roadside tyre changes. The Bridgestone QuietTrack, released last year, has diagonal grooves and longitudinal channels precisely engineered to reduce pattern and cavity noise—the two most common types of tyre noise that are inconveniently at the same high frequencies as human speech. Continued 

Tyres of Tomorrow The Thinking Tyre Goodyear’s Eagle 350 Urban tyre is a spherical tyre allowing movement in any direction. Sensors on its surface can detect different road surfaces and driving conditions, allowing its built-in AI to adapt the tyre shape and tread using actuators. It can also transmit data to improve braking, handling and efficiency, ‘talk’ to other tyres following the same route and direct materials towards punctures for repair. Truly the stuff of sci-fi! Pirelli have also been busy, claiming their 5G or Cyber tyre is the first to demonstrably transmit information it’s detected via the 5G network, allowing it to communicate with the vehicle, driver and wider infrastructure.

The Greener Tyre Their Oxygene tyre has a novel open structure that’s 3D-printed from recycled tyre dust and living moss in its sidewall. It can absorb water and polluting CO2 to feed the moss, which then produces oxygen. It also uses LiFi, a mobile wireless technology that uses light, to connect to the Internet of Things for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) data exchange. The non-pneumatic reCharge tyre has capsules filled with a biological, biodegradable liquid compound that can regenerate the tread. AI can be used to customise the compound to a driver profile and adapt the tyre to climate and road conditions. Potentially available as early as 2024, Michelin’s Uptis (Unique Puncture-Proof Tyre System) tyre is also non-pneumatic. It’s a sustainable combined wheel and tyre designed to eliminate the risk of punctures, flats and blow-outs, while also reducing raw material and energy use through efficient production, reduced tyre scrappage and elimination of the need for spares.

The Less-Polluting Tyres We may call them rubber tyres, but currently, most tyres are around ¼ plastic. When the ‘marbles’ of material they leave on roads disperse, they become a major cause of pollution. The University of Minnesota’s Center for Sustainable Polymers has been working for years on sustainable tyre materials such as rubber made from corn and other biomass. Continental Tire has already made a bike tyre out of Dandelion Rubber, a material they believe has great green potential, and plans to be producing Dandelion Rubber car tyres within a decade.

In ten years’ time, your tyres could do much more than just revolve; they may think, change, communicate, last the lifetime of your car and even clean the air. Exciting times!

Sleep: So Easy, You Can Do It With Your Eyes Closed? To help you sleep S soundly: leep is supposedly involuntary, so we take it for granted when we can sleep—and often ignore it when we can’t. But we shouldn’t.

Research has proved that sleep is as important to our health as diet and exercise. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration and reaction times, and long-term it can affect language processing, planning abilities and our sense of time. Some sleep disorders can contribute to serious health problems. So what stops us getting the sleep we need, and how can we improve the quantity and quality of our sleep?

Sweet Dreams aren’t made of this Enemies of good sleep include pain, reflux, the need to urinate, stress or depression, the menstrual cycle or menopause (hormonal changes affect temperature and melatonin production), snoring, or plain old insomnia, which can be caused by a combination of physical and psychological factors. There are also sleep disorders, including night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, teeth grinding, restless limb syndrome, and the more serious sleep apnoea (which reduces oxygen to the brain).

12

www.myhandy.guide

• Eliminate physical factors Cure snoring with nasal strips, sprays or minor surgery. See your doctor about physical health issues and sleep disorders. They can recommend a host of treatments including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, medication or referral to a Sleep Clinic if necessary. • Eliminate mental factors See your doctor or a counsellor if stress, depression or anxiety is stopping you getting to sleep or staying asleep. • Don’t go to bed hungry or thirsty Avoid large, late meals but have a light, healthy snack in the evening if you often find yourself waking up hungry during the night. Warm milk can help you feel full and contains tryptophan (a raw material for the sleep hormone melatonin). • Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the evening Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you awake. Alcohol makes you sleepy, but impairs sleep quality. • Stop smoking Nicotine also impairs sleep quality and has a very rapid withdrawal time, so many smokers are poor sleepers, often not realising their body’s nicotine cravings are the culprit.

advertise@myhandy.guide

by Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

• Get enough sunlight and exercise Light and exercise help regulate our body clock and mod and exercise helps to regulate our blood sugar levels, so try to spend time outside every day and get regular exercise. • Establish a routine before bed and avoid screens A relaxing routine can help train your body and brain to expect sleep. A warm bath and a good book can help, but try to avoid anything too emotionally charged or terrifying—and avoid screens an hour before bed, as the blue light they emit can interfere with sleep hormone production. • Make your bedroom a haven Avoid using your bedroom as a work space or dumpsite, as clutter and work will nag at you! Ensure your bedroom is well ventilated, dark, and at a comfortable temperature. Consider earplugs to eliminate noise, and invest in a really comfy mattress (try before you buy). • Declutter your brain Download your brain by jotting down your tomorrow’s tasks and any worries (particularly therapeutic if you write a positive action beside them).

Finally… Hard though it is, try not to worry about it, as this is counterproductive. If you can’t sleep, get up and do something absorbing but calm until you feel sleepy. Sweet dreams!
