Easy Hacks for an EcoFriendly Garden The importance of conserving our natural resources has never been so crucial. By having a well-kept, eco-friendly garden you won't just be creating a nice little green oasis for yourself, but also a welcoming haven for local wildlife and a reduction to your carbon footprint. Here are some great hacks on how to start eco-gardening for a better planet, that are easy for everyone to do.

Avoid Toxic Chemicals
We all know that we need to save energy and resources inside our homes but how many of us try to reduce what we waste outdoors? Think about how much water you use for your plants and consider installing a barrel or tub to collect the rainwater, which can be used as an alternative to using water straight from the tap.
Although it will take around six months for garden and food waste to compost, your garden will thank you for it! To set up compost in your garden you will need a container with a lid to put all organic matter such as leaves, weeds and food scraps in. It’s a good idea to start with animal manure or old compost and build up the material waste from there.
There are plenty of ways to avoid using harmful chemicals to take care of your garden. For example, you can create your own weed killer using a vinegar spray in combination with digging over the soil regularly.
Similarly, install solar powered outdoor lighting to save on energy.
Make sure you break up the compost regularly so it can decompose effectively.

If you have slugs and snails visiting your garden too frequently, try crushing eggshells to create barriers around your precious plants. Coffee, beer and grapefruit are also great deterrents to discourage these pests.

Feed the Earth Like us, plants need nourishing food too! In particular, calcium is an important supplement to use as it helps to limit the risks of plant diseases. A good way to give your plants calcium is to powder up eggshells and mix in with potting earth before planting. If you want to make your own fertiliser, cut off some nettles and place them in a bucket of water for a few days. This will provide your plants with the necessary nitrogen they need to grow healthily. Just be aware, the water will smell quite a bit!
Encourage the Wildlife Bugs such as slugs, snails and grubs are a common problem in any garden but if you encourage birds into your green spaces, they can act as natural protectors. Try setting up nesting boxes and bird feeders to attract them into the garden. This will help to combat the battle against bugs as they will do all the work for you! Similarly, plant flowers that will help bees to cross-pollinate and include a water bath to provide a water supply free from chemicals. Undertaking eco-friendly garden habits will provide food and shelter for local wildlife and also contribute to being kind to the planet.

Debbie celebrates 10 years of caring for Norwich’s seniors Local home care company Home Instead Norwich, is celebrating one of its longest serving caregivers. Deborah Weller, from Costessey, has been caring for elderly people across Norwich for 10 years, keeping them safe, well and happy in the comfort of their own homes. Before joining Home Instead, Debbie had never worked in care, but had looked after her son who suffered from muscular dystrophy. Knowing that she could use this experience to help more people, she decided to join Home Instead as a caregiver, and has never looked back. Working with the company since 2011, Debbie has cared for a number of clients, helping them with everything from personal care and home help to specialist dementia and post-discharge care. Debbie commented: “After ten years of caring, I still love my job. It doesn’t feel like going to work every day, it is more like visiting my friends. I’ve formed strong, close relationships with my clients and really enjoy supporting them in their own homes.

Rhubarb relish works perfectly with smoked fish although I like mine with Mrs Temples Walsingham or her new Wells Alpine cheese and a few crackers.
chutnified* (the rhubarb will break down to a smooth chutney).
INGREDIENTS • 350g (approx 3 stalks) Rhubarb, chopped small • 350g light brown sugar • 350g / 2 large onions, chopped small • 250ml red wine vinegar • 1 tablespoon Norfolk Honey • 1/2 teaspoon each of ground cinnamon, ginger and all spice • 1/4 teaspoon each of ground cloves and black pepper
Store in the fridge until needed.
Add all the ingredients in to a large thickbottomed saucepan. Bring to the boil and then reduce down to a rapid simmer for approx. 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened and

Cool slightly before transferring in to sterilized jars.
*Chutnified, as you may have worked out, is a made up name. I was teaching a Christmas Edible Gifts course and needed a name to describe when the prune and date chutney was ready; when it got to the thick and sticky stage, just before it sticks to the bottom, catches and burns! Hence chutnified = when it’s ready.
Tip - Try roasting 3-4cm chunks of Rhubarb in the oven, drizzled with a little apple juice and maple syrup. Bake for 20 minutes and serve with cinnamon infused Greek yogurt – for a healthier dessert.

The Marriott’s Way Rabbit By Lora Steggles and Kym Lambeth
“I’ve found a baby bunny rabbit!”, an uncertain voice told me as I answered the phone for Angelica’s Rainbow Sanctuary. “I was cycling home along Marriott’s Way, Norwich", the lady continued, “and sitting by the side of the track was a small, white, fluffy bunny.” We both knew this bunny couldn’t be wild as there are no known wild white rabbits in the UK. “He’s so trusting, he allowed me to pick him straight up and pop him in
my bicycle basket, ” she explained. “I just don’t know what to do with him, at least I think it’s a hun.” Reassuringly I told her “It’s ok, AR Sanctuary will help.” After asking the usual questions such as “was anyone else around? Does the rabbit seem injured, hurt or afraid?” The lady, whom took great joy in the company of the flock when we grazed the Marlpit Community Gardens where she volunteered, assured me the rabbit seemed to be well fed, just small and alone. After creating a suitable

habitat for the rabbit, who we later named Jon Snow due to his fluffy white appearance, we brought him safely to the sanctuary. To confirm my assessment that he was a healthy bunny in his first year of life, our wonder vet gave him a clean bill of health and we went about trying to find his home, thinking that surely somebody was missing such a lovely little bun. Alas, no owners came forward and it became apparent that Jon Snow was to become the first rescue rabbit at AR Sanctuary. There are many risks involved with bonding a rabbit with another animal, especially a male rabbit due to high levels of testosterone and their dominating nature. So precautionary measures were put in place when a new arrival, a 12 week old fuzzy guinea pig named Jack was rehomed as he was an unexpected baby of a female pet guinea pig.
Sadly, all too often female guinea pigs are unknowingly pregnant when sold to new owners, and male guinea pigs cannot remain with their mothers as they are likely to breed. Jack and Jon became best buddies and today can still be found playing, grooming and snuggling up to sleep together. Jon Snow the Rabbit was lucky to have been found by a caring passer by on Marriott’s Way. He now spends his day as an educational therapy rabbit, teaching young people the importance of creating a secure and safe home so animals cannot escape, and how to take care of them in a way that meets all a rabbit's welfare needs. Jon and Jack later opened their hearts and hutch to another guinea pig in need, Ebony, and the three of them will live out their days as part of AR Sanctuary’s rescued and rehomed rainbow flock.

In the current climate, many of us are choosing to holiday at home. Thankfully, we have a wealth of history and beautiful scenery on our doorstep and there’s nothing quite like hitting the open road to explore.
The Scottish Highlands
The Lake District
With a coastline stretching for 43 miles, much of the Norfolk coast is classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
For a lakeside drive, start at Pooley Bridge and drive 8.1 miles along the A592 to Glenridding, stopping to admire the Aira Force waterfall on the way. Continue down to Waterhead for picturesque views of England’s largest lake, Windermere.
Drive from Kings Lynn to Cromer along the A149 to view stunning landscapes, including white sandy beaches in Holkham, Wells and Brancaster as well as areas of pine forest, mud flats and saltmarshes.
Then drive 17.5 miles along the A593 to Eskdale, along Hardknott Pass - one of the steepest roads in England - stopping at Hardknott Fort to take in the beautiful scenery from the ruins of a Roman fort.

stretches 78.4 miles from Barnstaple in Devon to Newquay in Cornwall along the A39 through Bude.
There are many national tourist routes across the Highlands which allow drivers to experience the exquisite countryside. The Argyll coastal route takes motorists nearly 150 miles along the A83 from Tarbet by Loch Lomond, joining the A816 at Lochgilphead through Argyll to Fort William in the Highlands.
Stop at the historic fishing village of Clovelly in Devon to enjoy a picturesque stroll along its cobbled, traffic-free high street and admire the scenic coastline as you journey into Cornwall.
Visitors can stop at the Rest and be thankful viewpoint to enjoy magnificent views across the valley. The route concludes at Fort William, at the foot of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

The Cotswolds With its rolling hills and some plant species so rare they are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act, much of the Cotswolds are areas of outstanding natural beauty. The Romantic Road is a two-day trip of two circular routes, A Road for Today and A Road for Tomorrow, each starting and finishing in Cheltenham. Travelling A Road for Today, visitors will drive 75 miles through the Cotswolds stopping at the historic towns and villages of Winchcombe, Stanway, Broadway, Chipping Campden, Blockley, Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold and The Slaughters. A road for Tomorrow takes motorists 90 miles through villages Northleach, Burford, Lechlade, Fairford, Bilbury, Cirencester and Painswick.
Lodge Farm Holiday Barns in Bawburgh offers three self-catering barns in a countryside location, all with a lake view and within striking distance of Norwich city.
