Alan Titchmarsh talks...
Common Gardening Mistakes I’m quick to tell them I don’t have all the answers, particularly when their gardens are several miles away, but I do my best to help. I always say, as a golden rule, prevention is better than cure, so with that in mind here are my top seven gardening mistakes… and how to avoid them! Firstly, you can have too much of a good thing! Less is more when it comes to good gardening, and if you cram too much together it’ll look a mess, or worse still, will die! Another big error is over- and under-watering. Be regimented over your watering routine and adjust it depending on rainfall to ensure your garden is nicely hydrated at all times.
He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the most common mistakes we make in our gardens. I really enjoy my time spent with the public, chatting about and sharing the passion we all have for gardening and horticulture. It’s really a subject that is so deep and you can explore it in such a variety of ways… and yet most of the conversations I have with people end up with them asking my advice on the worries and woes that they are experiencing back home in their green spaces!

Next, always ensure what you’re pulling up are weeds and not slow-developing flowers. We can sometimes find ourselves being particularly ruthless with what grows in our gardens, so remember, everything grows at a different rate and sometimes the most mundane of plants will flourish to become the most beautiful… but only if they’re left in the ground!
Another big thing is failing to prepare your soil. Give your plants a chance by ensuring the soil they’re in is in good condition. A simple testing kit will let you know if you need to re-compost, add fertiliser, or simply switch to a different soil type. You should also steer clear of what I call ‘the bullies’! Japanese knotweed and Russian vine are particularly unruly and will literally undermine not just your flowers, but nearby buildings too! And the same goes for our animal friends. Sure, we may like to see a hedgehog, bird life, even the odd fox, but the best gardens are those that manage to protect the food supply present!
My final piece of advice is to try to spread the love around your garden. Few of us have an endless budget with which to run riot in our green spaces, and it’s better to do a little at a time across the board, than blow it all in one part of the garden, leaving the rest of it looking forlorn and bereft. Remember, no two gardens are the same, in much the same way that no two gardeners are the same, and you’re never going to get it right all of the time. The most important thing is to be organised and put the effort in – if you do that, the rewards will very often follow close behind.

Be Pension Prepared BY MARK DAY Financial Planner, Managing Director Fortyhill Financial Solutions If you have little idea how to prepare for retirement, then join the club. Nearly half (47%) of working age Brits are a bit lost when it comes to their pension savings^. Research has also revealed that just 28% feel secure in their understanding of how to manage their pension in the run-up to retirement, while even fewer (27%) have an idea of what a ‘good’ amount of pension savings is for someone their age.
‘On the back foot’ The gender pension gap once again rears its ugly head in the study, with women almost twice as likely (21%) to say they feel completely ‘on the back foot’ than men (12%). They are also more than twice as likely to lack understanding of how to manage their pension as they approach retirement (34% of women vs 14% of men).
Approach retirement with confidence Managing Director at Aviva, Mary Harper, commented, “It’s very easy to put thoughts about later life to the back
of your mind but investing time in thinking and planning ahead can make a world of difference to your options… evidence suggests that people who access financial advice are, on average, tens of thousands of pounds better off in the long-term.”
Investment terms trigger emotional response Jargon is common in the world of investments and pensions, which can make them seem impenetrable and intimidating. If the thought of ‘Equities’ and ‘Investment ISAs’ makes your heart race, you’re not alone, new research*has shown that financial terms really do make people anxious.
Jar-gone Researchers used a variation of the Emotional Stroop Test, which measures information processing speed when naming the ink colour of different words, to compare response times for neutral words like ‘pencil’ with investment specific terms like ‘FTSE.’ Nearly two-thirds of participants had slower response times and higher error rates for financial trigger words, suggesting they may be susceptible to a stress response. Additionally, 44.3% experienced an increased heart rate and 11.5% reported breathlessness. The terms ‘Stockbroker’, ‘Asset Management’ and ‘Investment Risk’
produced three of the slowest reaction times. Other investment-related words like ‘Bond Fund’ and ‘Equities’ also took longer than average.
Don’t fear ‘FTSE’ Stripping back jargon can help people think more clearly about investments and pensions. In supporting research, Barclays found that 71% of respondents don’t feel confident enough to invest money in the stock market, with a quarter feeling ‘frightened’ by the idea. Despite these fears, people do want to improve their financial knowledge, with three in five participants keen to learn more about financial terminology. Kebabs FOOD & DRINK

orwich evenings have got more exciting with the late opening of Sir Toby’s Beers, along with food stalls like Cocina Mia (Chilean) and Churros for the People (Spanish Tapas) opening late on a Thursday – Saturday through summer. We (me along with a few others) are bringing back Norwich Cocktail week and hopefully spreading it across Norfolk in October. Castle Quarter will be bringing street food and entertainment soon, as well as a street food market in the old Jamie Oliver’s, so it’s all hotting up. But don’t forget Norwich has over 500 cafes, bars and restaurants so get yourself booked in. My recipe is an easy peasy prawn kebab to either grill or cook on the barbecue. INGREDIENTS • 8 skewers – soaked in cold water • 32 king prawns – peeled but with tails still on (only if possible) MARINADE AND BASTING SAUCE • 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce (bought or from recipe below) • 2 juicy limes – juiced • Touch salt and black pepper Pre-soak the skewers in cold water for 20-30 minutes before using – or they’ll burn.
Mix the marinade ingredients together. Marinade the prawns in half the marinade mix for 10-15 minutes, reserve the other half for later.

Marinated in Sweet Chilli and Lime
Thread four prawns on to each skewer. Barbecue over hot coals or grill for 2-3 minutes on each side, brushing over the remaining marinade until cooked. CORIANDER SALAD • Half bag rocket • Half bunch coriander leaves – chopped • Half yellow pepper – very thinly sliced • Half red chilli – very thinly sliced • Half tbsp sunflower oil • Half tbsp lime juice • Pinch seasoning Simply toss the ingredients together and serve with the prawn skewers. THAI SWEET CHILLI SAUCE • 4 red chillies – finely diced • 60ml water • 100ml red wine vinegar • 200g caster sugar • 1 clove garlic - crushed • 1 slice ginger – left whole (just for taste) TO FINISH • 2 tsp fresh lime - juiced • 2 tsp fish sauce Place all the ingredients for the chilli sauce into a thick-bottomed saucepan and boil (no lid) until thickened (approx. 10-15 mins) into a light syrup. To finish stir in the lime and fish sauce, remove the ginger slice and store in a sterilised bottle or jar.

Horsford Cricket Club Are you aware that you have on your doorstep, one of the major cricket clubs in the Eastern Region? We invite you to take advantage of the fantastic facilities available at Manor Park, Holt Road, near Norwich Airport. The club has four senior teams with the 1st XI playing in the EAPL which is the Premier Cricket League in the Eastern Region. The three other senior teams all play in the Norfolk Alliance. We have competitive cricket players from the age of nine and a Girls/Ladies section also playing at a competitive level. There is an extremely successful junior section for both Girls and Boys where we offer regular qualified and insured coaching on a Friday evening throughout the season, a great social evening for all the family, usually with a BBQ. The club have been playing at Manor Park since 1980. Significant improvements have been made to the ground and clubhouse over the years, we now have a modern, disabled-friendly and first class sporting facility - probably the best in the region!

The club shares its facilities with the Norfolk County Cricket Club and also houses the offices of the Norfolk Cricket Board. During the season, not many days pass where there is not some form of cricket taking place. We have a variety of membership packages available via our website, where you can also contact one of our committee members: www.horsfordcricketclub.co.uk If any of these membership packages are not of interest, why not just turn up with your sandwiches, flask and deckchair you will be more than welcome. There is plenty of parking around the ground.

HISTORY
THE SOUND OF THE POLICE Edith Smith and the drive for equality in the UK police force. The recent 100-year anniversary of the first woman police officer in the Metropolitan Police has been countered nicely with the prediction from the force that the total of a quarter of a million female law enforcers will be achieved by 2025.
Edith Smith is officially titled the first female police constable in the UK, given her role in August 1915. She had been part of a group called the Women Police Volunteers (WPV), who took it upon themselves to protect the large number of prostitutes who had congregated in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham, attracted there by the nearby army base. Duties involved any cases where women, or children, were involved, and news of the success of her work quickly spread to London, where the Met were keen to replicate the positive results. Sadly, for Smith, police work was being combined, seven days a week, with duties as a matron nurse in a care home. She was forced to leave the WPV through exhaustion in 1919 and when she died of an overdose five years later, was just 44 years of age.
Certainly, the elevation and promotion of the fairer sex in the police force feels a long way from the days of Edith Smith, a pioneer in the Met Police and someone who led the charge for fairness and equality.
Now, in addition, blue plaques adorn the walls of buildings in Grantham, Runcorn and Oxton, where she lived.
