If you are one of those who like heavy music, like liquid fuel, then you won't think twice to come to Varoshan. One band, three different countries, and 4 members with a contrasting background gave as a final result "and Then The Rains Came". This could briefly describe the beginnings of Varoshan, but let's see what else Anders Bomberg, their guitarist and mix engineer, told us. By: Alejandro Pérez.

Hi Varoshan! How are you? It's a pleasure to interview you. Hello. Thanks for having us. How has the pandemic taken you so far? The raging pandemic has, as it has for most people, had a significant impact on our private lives. Looking at the big picture though, we have been fairly fortunate, e.g. no major complications for the ones of us who have had COVID. For the band, the major annoyance was that we could not play our planned album release shows in January of this year… According to your bio, the band emerged in 2019 so you have been created for only 3 years. How did the idea of creating the band come up? The idea of the band has been around for many years before we got going. Matias has had a bunch of songs from way back that he always wanted to have properly recorded. There have been several attempts at getting started in the past. Some years ago Matias asked me if I would play guitar on these tracks and I accepted. We needed drums and Anders Törnqvist was the top candidate for many reasons and he also said yes. Matias knows Mark from when Bob Malmstöm was touring with Bludger many years ago. As far as I know, Mark also had no hesitations to join Varoshan.

Who are its current members and what bands do they come from, as I understand that they have other projects as well? We all play in different bands and projects, that is true… First the lineup, copied straight from our press release Mark Howes - vocals & live guitar Anders Bomberg - guitars, programming Anders Törnqvist – drums Matias Löfman - bass, programming Mark has earlier played with at least Bludger, Even Flowers Kill, When The Wolf Comes Home and Hundred-Year-Old Man. Bludger had a bit of a technical approach to it, but was a much more blunt onslaught of hardcore and metal. Same goes for When The Wolf Comes Home, with a touch of post-hardcore as well. Even Flower Kills and Hundred-Year-Old Man explore more similar realms as Varoshan, but have their own sound and feeling. Anders Törnqvist has played most extensively with Dark Planets, Kolt, Final Assault and Argent Void. Final Assault is pretty straightforward thrashcore, while Argent Void operates in the death and thrash metal spaces. Kolt was a hardcore/metal band with a tech vibe, more to the likes of Converge et al. Dark Planets is Anders T.'s solo project with lots of variety in styles, but leans towards extreme metal. Anders B. played for a long time in dark metal band Lost in Tears and has lately worked with Intrasonic, an industrial rock band. Matias' has Bob Malmström, a hardcore punk/extreme metal band, and has played with punk metal band Necroslurg, rockband S.A.A.B., and hardcore metal band Trident. What influences helped create the band? We all bring our own influences to Varoshan which was really interesting to hear when we were recording the album. We have a Spotify playlist (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3F8MErqHqq30SqK2wQDzeU?si=1299b8496ecb47 6c)where each member has added 10 songs that have inspired them when it comes to Varoshan. Over all we try to keep an open mind when it comes to music but to give some sort of idea, one of the paths we are following is the doomier side of Varoshan, starting from bands like Black Sabbath and passing bands like My Dying Bride and Opeth on the way to where we are. Another path is the “core” side where you can hear influences from bands like Converge, Neurosis and Cult of Luna, to name a few. How would you define your musical style? If you were talking to Matias, he would give you a description that would sound like a wine connoisseur describing a very intricate and complex red wine. I tend to look at music from a technical perspective as I’m mostly interested in the composition and production side of things, not necessarily the consumption side. Overall Varoshan songs are usually based on guitar riffs.

Prior to the release of your first album you released two singles, "The Crow" and "The Message". Tell us briefly about both singles? The Crow is one of the tracks that Matias has had in his drawer of almost finished tracks for a long time. I don’t think we really made any significant changes to the structure from the original demo. The main riffs are pretty straight forward so this was the track I picked first when I started with guitar recordings. Most of the guitars on other songs were later rerecorded but on The Crow it is probably 90% of the first real guitar recordings for pre-production that are on the album. There was just something magic about them that I decided not to replace them later. The Message is the most Varoshan song to me. There are a lot of different elements but they all come together nicely. And Riina’s (vocalist in Silentium) guest vocals are a special cherry on top. Let's talk about the band's debut album "...and Then The Rains Came" which was released earlier this year. How was the editing and recording process? As we live far apart, we cannot jam and practice together. The songs are mostly written by Matias so far. For this album the songs would have been created in Reason. At the start everything is just MIDI, so no real instruments are recorded. This makes it easier to rearrange and modify parts. I suggested some changes, and together Matias and I came up with the final structure. The next part was to record demo guitar and bass to replace some of the programmed instruments. I think we were done with this in late 2019. Anders T has his own home studio where he then recorded the drums to the demo guitars and bass tracks. In January 2020 we all met for the first time ever, when we met at Anders T’s studio to record Mark’s vocals and some keyboard parts. After that, both Matias and I recorded the final bass and guitar parts at our homes. Then I took all that and mixed it, adding a bit of flavor here and there with FX etc. How many songs does it include and what are the songs about? I’m not the best person to answer this question but I can say this. The album has five songs plus an interlude. This adds up to 49:25 as the songs are quite long. As for the topics of the songs, there is a common theme of destruction that goes through all the songs. I think there is also room for personal interpretation. I personally really like Mark’s lyrics. On the one hand, the words are simple and easy to comprehend but on the other hand quite thought provoking and feel very personal, at least to me.

Any audiovisual material? We made a video of The Message. It is available on YouTube (https://youtu.be/zpbvPoM5BYM) Regarding the album. I suppose you have had the opportunity to present it live. How was the live presentation of it? Unfortunately, we did not get to perform live yet. We had album release shows lined up but they got canceled due to you know what… How was the public's reaction? I take it this is about the reaction of the people that could not be at the shows that did not take place… They were absolutely blown away. We were voted best live show that never happened; p No… Everyone has to wait a bit longer to see us live. We are working on it. How has it been, so far, the level of acceptance it has had both by the public and by the specialized press? As a new band it is not that easy to get noticed. That being said, the feedback we have received has been great. One comment from the very first review of The Crow that I won't forget is that “the song felt only half as long as it actually is” which we all took as a compliment. At least I think it is a good thing if you get so immersed in the music that you don’t notice how much time has passed. Where is it possible to obtain a copy of it and in what formats is it available? At the moment you can get a digital copy from our Bandcamp page (https://elitbolaget.bandcamp.com/album/and-then-the-rains-came). We have also released a limited edition on cassette. Back to the band. What are the most immediate plans you have? We want to record more music and play some live shows. We have many things planned already but unfortunately nothing we can announce yet. We are on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/varoshandoom) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/varoshandoom/) where you can follow along as we take our next steps. Have you already planned the next shows? Again, there are many plans but nothing we can announce yet. With the pandemic still going strong and a looming WW3, it is hard to plan and predict the future…

Well Varoshan, that's all. Thank you for your time and wish you the best of luck in your career. Before we finish, something you would like to say. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us :) We really hope you and your readers enjoy our album. If things go well, it should not be that long until our next release. Stay healthy, stay safe and take care of each other. Formed in the late 80's of the last century, Sven Gali quickly stood out for their energetic and passionate shows. After almost 25 years of a hiatus, for various reasons, the band is back, with 3 of its original members, eager to make music and continue to demonstrate that they are still those young rebels who give everything for the hard rock/metal of the 80's and 90's. About these and other details Dan Fila, who joined the band in 2017, tells us. By: Alejandro Pérez.

Hi Sven Gali! How are you? Nice to be able to interview you. How has the pandemic taken you so far? It has given us the opportunity to work on new material and put together a live show that will blow people away. How would you define your musical style? Heavy melodic rock with attitude Who are the current members, since I suppose that after so many years they have changed? The lineup consists of the three remaining original members: David Wanless, Andy Frank, and Shawn Minden. Shawn Williamson and I (Dan Fila) joined the band in 2017. Researching more about you, I noticed that after your 1995 album "Inwire" you didn't produce any album or songs until 2020 when you released the EP "3". What is the reason for this 25-year musical void? The band never officially broke up. Everyone needed to take a break from music and the band went on to start families and businesses. Throughout that time the band did one off shows. In 2012, Dee passed away from lung cancer.

Why an EP and not make an album after so many years of inactivity? Our intention was to get our feet wet by going to NYC and recording “Kill the Lies” with David Bendeth. An EP or an album weren’t in the realm of thought at that point. We recorded the rest of the songs on “3” and decided to put it out to show gratitude to our friends and supporters. Any audiovisual material? You can find all videos and music on our website: https://www.svengali.ca/ Does this new EP keep the same sound as the two previous works, or does it mark a total renewal of the band? The band's musical influences have, and continue to evolve. There was never an intentional plan to sound like anything - the EP is a reflection of who we were musically between 2017 and 2020. How has it been the reunion with the public after so many years, since I suppose that there are still fans of Sven Gali from the first years plus what could have been added as new ones when discovering the band? It has been great. We are pretty overwhelmed by the support from both core, and those hearing the band for the first time. For this 2022, I know you are working on a new album that will be released at the end of May and is called "Bombs and Battlescars". How is the editing and recording process going or is it ready? The recording process is going really well. We arrange the songs before we go into the studio so there is no need for editing in that sense of the word. How many songs will it contain? The record will contain 8 songs - 4 new songs, and 4 previously unreleased demos from the early 90’s Do you already have any audiovisual material? You can find everything on our website: https://www.svengali.ca/ How do you think it will be received in general, both by the public and by the specialized press? We love what we are doing, and that is the reason why we are still creating and recording music. Because we essentially pay for everything, there is no pressure for the press or public to like it. Having said that, we do hope people enjoy what we are doing - some will, some won’t, but most importantly, we do. Once ready, where will it be possible to obtain a copy of it? You will be able to get the record on RFL’s website: https://www.rflrecords.com/

Back to the band. Apart from this new album, what other plans does Sven Gali have planned? We are planning on doing some festival dates this summer. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the band’s debut and there are extensive touring plans for the summer of 2023 in Europe and North America. Well Sven Gali, this is all. Thank you for your time and wish you the best of luck in your new phase. Before we finish, something you would like to say. On behalf of the band I’d like to say we are very grateful for the support and love from both the media and public throughout the years. We are loving what we are doing and that comes through loud and clear in our music. I am always surprised when I discover rock bands from countries with cultures as ancient and mysterious as Japan. In this case it's Heterogeneous Andead, a trio from Tokyo who have just released their third album titled "Chaotic Fragments", which coincides with the 10 years of the band's trajectory. About these and other details Yusuke Kiyama, guitarist of the band, told us. By: Alejandro Pérez.

Hello Heterogeneous Andead! How are you? It's a pleasure to interview you. How did the pandemic take you? The pandemic has begun, and it has become impossible to perform live in Japan at all. But we originally planned to stop performing live activities in September 2019 and start making an album, so it didn't have much effect. I understand that the band emerged in 2013, so it's almost 10 years of created. How did the idea of creating the band come about? It started as a solo project by Yusuke Kiyama(I), then I wrote the songs by myself. After that I created this band to expand that activity and perform live. Who are its current members, as I guess they have changed? The current members are Yusuke (guitar), Haruka (vocal) and Tomoyuki Nakano (drums). How would you define your musical style? The musical style is something like a mixture of thrash metal, symphonic metal, progressive metal and electronica. All the songs are still written by myself, so everything I like is included. It is unique that one vocalist sings both growl and clean voice is classical.

What are your main influences? And the biggest influence is Slayer. Let's talk about "Chaotic Fragments", the band's most recent musical work, which was released on April 8th. How was the editing and recording process? We did all the editing and recording by ourselves. Only vocals were recorded in the studio, but all other instruments are home recording. Yusuke(I) did all the editing and mixing / mastering. By doing it myself, I was able to take the time to create something that I was satisfied with. How many songs does it include? The number of recorded songs is eight. There aren't many, but there are a number of long songs, and I've only recorded really great songs. Any audiovisual material? We made a lyric video of "Fragments of Memories" from the album. How will be the promotion and diffusion process of the album? The promotion is from Wormholedeath, with answers to such interviews and on-air on the radio. Where will it be possible to obtain a copy of it? The album is available for download and streaming, and the physical release will be on April 29th. "Chaotic Fragments" will be the band's third album. In a general way, what do you base your songs on? Our songs are about the madness, sadness, sadness and despair that are inside human beings. Do you try to transmit any message? We don’t try to convey a message in particular, but the listener may feel something. Changing of topic. I'm always surprised to discover a band from Japan, because almost little is known about the rock scene there. How is the rock scene there in Japan and specifically in Tokyo, where you are from? There are many bands and styles in Japan.

Is there a variety of bands and styles? Of course there are many metal bands, but the metal scene itself is probably much smaller than in Europe and America. Also, as with the global trend, I think the presence of the band as a whole is declining. Do you have any governmental support? There's government support, but it's only for art and creativity as a whole, not for bands in particular. Back to the band. In addition to this new album, what other plans do you have in mind? We make a music video now. Do you already have dates for upcoming shows? We haven't decided about the schedule for the concerts, but we hope we can do it soon. We definitely want to perform live activities overseas. Well Heterogeneous Andead, this is it. Thank you again for your time and I wish you the best of luck in your career. Before I finish, anything you want to say. This album is a very confident work that we have spent a lot of time making carefully. We hope you will listen and like it. Thank you!

In Through the Out Door' (1979).
