Alternating between Malaysia and Singapore and with more than 3 decades of creations, and an equal number of recordings, As Sahar's trajectory is more than established. To this we must add that they are considered the creators of Eastern Black Metal. About these and other details Hanael, bassist and one of the founding members of the band tells us. By: Alejandro Pérez.

Hi Hanael, how are you, a pleasure to interview you? How has the pandemic taken you so far? Hi, great to hear from you. I'm good & currently on vacation back home in Malaysia after almost 2 years stranded in Singapore. Pandemic sucks as all our tour plans had to be cancelled. As Sahar has been created for almost 3 decades, so it will be a bit difficult to summarize so much history in a few lines. Could you briefly tell us about the beginnings of the band? Well let’s see, we started out in 1987 consist of me, Barchiel & Uriel. Started playing covers song such as Metallica, Sodom, Merciful Fate etc. Only in in 1993 we decided to write out own material & recoded a 2 track promo demo. Later recorded a proper demo "Primitively Eastern Winds"

Who are the current members, for sure in so many years they must have changed? Yes, you are correct a lot of lineup changes along the way, the current lineup is: Me on Bass. Vocal: A. Altrajalia Guitar: O. Pagan Drum: A. Blackheart I noticed that the band defines itself as the creator of Eastern Black Metal. What bands influenced you in defining the genre of As Sahar? Most likely the Norwegian scene inspired me in the genre of As Sahar as they idolize their nature & culture. It inspires me to do it on our own cults & arts. What impact has this had on the rock scene in Singapore, where you are from? This does not impact the rock scene at all at they are mostly mainstream & we still remains & known as underground bands. We prefer it that way. As for me I'm born in Malaysia & raised in Singapore, I'm closer to the Malaysian scene than in Singapore. Could you tell us about the rock scene in Singapore, as I have no knowledge of rock there? The rock scene here is almost dying as not much to none rock concert for a very long long time. Early great rock bands in the 90's are Rusty Blade,Rockers, Sweet Charity & Helter Skelters. Is there variety, both in terms of styles and bands? Hell yeah there are some are into Black Sabbath, Helloween, Motorhead, Twisted Sisters etc. Do you have any government support or is it all independent? All are independent. Let's talk about "Le666ion of Nusantara", the band's most recent record that will be released at the end of February, which is also a Split. How was the editing and recording process? For As Sahar since all my bands mate are in Malaysia while in stranded in Singapore, I will make the skeleton of the song structure then email to the band mate. They will study the song & once ready they will record their individual department in studio of their own choice for the raw file. Once completed they will have emailed back to me, I will record my bass parts & did a rough mix for postmortem. The rough mix & the individual raw tracks I will email to my personal sound engineer in Malaysia where he will do all the mixing & mastering at his studio for the final output. How many songs are included? 4 songs were recorded for this split release. Any audiovisual material? Unfortunately, no.

As I said before, this new record is a Split, in this case it is with the band Warkvlt. How was the work with this band? It's been great working with Warkvlt as I have known them for 20+ years. How did you choose the songs? Those were the left over unrecorded track from our latest album, "D.O. A" (2021). Regarding the Split. How do you plan to promote and publicize it? Mostly thru social media & hell yeah both the labels did a great job promoting this release. Have you already organized the shows? Only time will tell once this pandemic is over. With "Le666ion of Nusantara", As Sahar now has almost 30 albums. What is your inspiration to create and compose, in a general way, the band's songs? Hahahahahahaha I just write songs/melody that hit my minds while preserving As Sahar trademarks. Do you want to transmit any message? What we wrote in our lyric is remembering those forgotten Eastern myth, arts & cults that most younger generation might have forgotten or unknown to them. Back to the band. As I said at the beginning, you have been created for almost 3 decades now. How could you evaluate the band's trajectory so far? Well the band have been great as it has inspired newer band to emerged taking As Sahar as their inspiration etc., hearing them covering our songs at their rehearsal room giving me the chill feeling. Do you think you've managed to accomplish everything you have set out to do? Most of my targets have been achieved but I'm always hunger for more. How do you see the future of the band? I will continue writing songs, making music's & album as long as I'm still able to. Well Hanael, that's all. Thank you for your time and just wish you the best of luck. Before finishing, something you want to say. Thanks for this interview bro, I hope more Asian bands could get recognition or getting signed by euro, us etc. label as what we have achieved. KEEP THE EASTERN FLAME BURNING!!!

Its main goal is to combine different sounds in a whole linked with the feeling of hard rock. Under this premise O.Y.D was born 10 years ago in Greece, which has been in constant evolution. Their most recent work dates back to 2019. This and other reasons served as a push for this interview, which was answered by Orestis, vocalist of the band. By: Alejandro Pérez.

Hello O.Y.D.! How are you? It's a pleasure to interview you. Hello there! I`m fine good the pleasure is mine hope you are also doing well How has the pandemic been going for you? Well I think we are close to the end with that pandemic think so we hope to get back on stage soon! According to your bio, the band emerged in 2012 so you have already been created for a decade. How did the idea of creating the band come up? We started back in 2012 our guitarist nick found me and we start jamming cover song at first but also started writing songs 3 months after we found our first bass player and 2013 we were formed officially the band Where does the curious name of the band come from? It’s a funny story we name the band aid because everything that has do to with the band comes one-year delay seriously!

Who are its current members? We are 4-member band right now: Orestis - vocal Nick - guitar Steve - bass Haris - drums What would you mention as your main influences? Well, we are 4 people with different taste of music so it’s difficult to describe right know so let’s say mostly heavy rock music from the 90s until know! How would you define your musical style? I would say Modern Metal. So far the band has 2 albums, being 2019's "Indigo" the most recent one. Correct, and our last effort was a single video clip of a new song called “Bring them to justice” last year! How was the editing and recording process? Oohh men it was fun and a lot of work every day!

How many tracks does it bring and what are these about? It’s a 9-piece album and it’s our point of view for the world! ´ Any audiovisual material? No at the moment. Have you had the opportunity to publicize and promote it? Yeah that’s a good question when we started after 7 months Covid came! How has it been generally received, both by the public and by the specialized press? The received was great!! Where can copies be obtained? You can find the album on our YouTube channel and in physical form vinyl you can order by our site or email! Changing the topic, a little bit. As I said at the beginning, the band is already 10 years old. How do you feel so far? Ooohh men that’s a good question! It’s like a marriage with the good and the bad things together hahahaha! Personally blessed having this guy's in our life! How much has the band, and its members, grown in all this time? You know it’s fun sometimes to take a step back and look back what we have achieved or what we did wrong. It's a process that mature you so we all feel more mature for what we are doing and how we do it! How would you like to see yourselves in 10 more years? Oohh seriously I don’t have any idea! I guess be healthy and still create music! Regarding the rock scene in Greece. Could you update us a little bit about the rock scene in Greece? It’s a good and strong scene but mostly stoner rock! Do you have governmental support? No men! Back to the band. What are your plans for this year? So the main thing it’s to get back on stage so live!

Do you already have shown planned? We are waiting answers from festivals around the world and we just booked one in may in our hometown! Can we expect a new album soon? This year I don’t think so we are going to focus in live gigs and creating new songs so let’s say next year! Well O.Y.D., that's all. Thank you for your time and wish you luck in your career. Before we finish, anything you would like to say. It was a pleasure! What started as a one-man project in 2012, two years later became a serious project and Charcoalcity was born. Sometime later Deezee's project came to fruition and as a result it has just released their second album titled "Antibionics". About this and much more Deezee, the mastermind tells us. By: Alejandro Pérez.

Hello Charcoalcity, how are you? A pleasure to interview you Hi! We’ re fine, thanks! How did the pandemic take you guys? Well…it was a bit strange… due to corona we could not do rehearsals, and normally we were going to release the second album in 2020, but that would not have been a good idea, but, hey… here we are! I understand that the band emerged in 2012 so you have been created for a decade now. Actually it didn’t’ t… I recorded the songs for the first album while there wasn’t’ t a band yet ;) the band started in 2014… but anyway, time flies while you’ re having fun!

How did the idea of creating the band come about? After recording and mixing the first two songs (that was “Feed me” and “Leave “) a good friend of the family heard them, and he insisted to do something with it… so I asked Timo and Anthony if they would like to start up a project. Who are its current members? That’ s me on guitar and main vocals, Anthony on drums, Timo on bass, and since about two years we have a second guitarist, Dirk, who makes our sound even bigger live! What would you mention as your main influences? Difficult question… I’ m into a lot of styles, but bands like Nine inch nails, Rammstein, and even new wave like Sisters of mercy or the latest work by Gary Numan could be an influence. How would you define your musical style? For ourselves, we call it “Industrial Wave Metal” … but you’ re free to call it something else if you want to ;) Let's talk about "Antibionics", the band's most recent album which has just been released and which I have enjoyed a lot. How was the editing and recording process? Like the first album “Greyscale” I do the recording, mixing and mastering myself in my home studio (that means all instruments and vocals) and at rehearsals we change the songs a little bit to have a more “live” feeling…but for the third album we are planning to write the songs in the rehearsal room with the full band. How many songs are on it and what is it about? There’ s eleven songs on the album (ten own songs and one cover “Pump up the jam” we did just for fun!) and mostly the lyrics are about mankind polluting our planet and our rotten society, but with this album it’ s placed in a distant future, that’ s why we’ re on the cover dressed up like a futuristic gang hunting androids, referring to the lyrics from “Antibionics”. Yes… I do like science fiction ;););) How do you plan to promote and promote it? The album is released on more than 70 music platforms on my label Deezee records in corporation with Cricket Hill Music and worldwide promotion is done by Hard Life Promotion from the Netherlands. How do you think it will be received, in general, both by the public and the specialized press? That’ s hard to predict… our music is certainly not categorized as mainstream metal, so it’ s always a struggle to get recognized… but we do get very good reactions live, and I have the feeling that “Antibionics” gets even more attention than “Greyscale” so that’ s good, ain’ t it?

Where is a copy of it available? While the first album was available on CD in real stores, “Antibionics” is not… so you can only get it on digital stores, but we do have a limited offer: Buy a shirt and get a promotional copy on CD for free... so that’ s one way to get a physical copy, for the die- hards ;) you can only order this on our website www.charcoalcity.com Changing topic. As I said at the beginning, the band has been around for a decade now. How do you feel so far? We’ re having fun all the time! It took a while after the lockdowns, but we’ re on fire now! How much has the band and each of its members grown? Musically the band has grown a lot, and even more as friends! How do you plan to celebrate these ten years? Haha, we celebrate it every rehearsal!!!! No… we’ re not really planning an anniversary gig or something like that… Back to the band. What are your plans for the next few months? Do you already have any shows scheduled? Yeah, but due to the pandemic a lot of gigs were cancelled, and this year most of the festivals are filled with names and you can’ t gets in between that anymore. so for now we take what we can get, as long as we can play it’ s ok… Well Charcoalcity, that's all. Thank you for your time and wish you luck in your career. Before we finish, anything you want to say? Yeah! We do hope that through our music, people start thinking about finding ways to save our planet...it’ s not only the big companies who do the pollution, it all starts with individuals making the right decisions... for example: If you don’t buy plastic packed products, the big companies won’ t sell them like that anymore, get it? Thanks for interviewing us, hope our music reaches many metal lovers on your side of the planet! Greetings from Flanders, Belgium!
