Hello GANG, Well, this really is the million dollar question. And I want to give you a ‘no ifs, buts or maybes’ answer. Of course you can! if you are willing to do what it takes to have a multi million dollar pay day.

As I am writing this, I have just finished a small tour with Mal and have met four new Million Dollar Streetsmart success stories.

These people came from all different areas. One is in the coffee business, one is in the kit home business, one is in the transport industry, and one is in the property business.

The simple truth is this. If you truly want success, work out the price you have to pay to achieve your goal, and then get busy PAYING the price! And there in lies the difference between success and failure. If you had a room of 100 people and asked them all if they would like a million dollars, every one would say yes. How do I know this? Well, because in every city we just went to we asked this question and not one person said no they do not want the money. BUT, when a proven plan is laid out, with a massive amount of proof and success, story after success story, showing that the knowledge and strategies work, only 20% of the attendees have taken action. (I kid you not, I have just done the maths. The 80/20 rule strikes again).

So why do only 20% take action when given a proven plan to success? I wish I could answer that one, because I want everyone to succeed,

but try as we might, it will never happen.

We all know the tragedy of AIDS and the high death toll that occurs with this horrible disease, however, what many people do not know is that sufferers can largely hold the disease at bay and live a normal life if you simply follow the pill taking regimen that is required. Put another way. People would rather die than follow a proven plan.

And the same sad truth applies in business. Those of you willing to take the success pills of business as prescribed by us, will more than likely achieve the success you deserve. However, there are others we have prescribed the pills of success to that simply won’t take the pills. As a result they will fall by the wayside, and trust me, they will all have an excuse of why they did not take the pills. They didn’t have the money, their partner won’t let them, they will do it later. But deep inside, they know that the answer is looking back at them every morning in the mirror. It is them. They are their biggest problem, and no amount of pushing, prodding or cajoling will change these stats.

I am praying that you are one of the 20% that are serious about your success, because, if you are then we will help you get there.

I will leave you with this simple 6 step success formula that has been responsible for much of my success. 1.

Work out the price to pay for your success and start paying the price. 2. Find a mentor at least 5 times more successful than you in the area that you want to succeed in. 3. Master marketing 4. Master sales 5. Commit to systems 6. Destroy FEAR And... ignore those close to you not qualified to give you their opinion (yes even your spouse, and fair warning, part of the price could be dramatically reducing your sex life, at least in the early days)! These are the big nuggets of success that have helped me so much in my business life and they will help you to, if you will just swallow the pills we ask you to. And one of those pills is never missing a Streetsmart Business School.

20 years on…

Amazingly, next year marks the 20th anniversary of the ‘world wide web’ becoming an everyday part of our lives. To celebrate its evolution and the critical role it now plays for small businesses, here are 10 digital terms that all smaller business operators should be familiar with:

Short for customer relationship management, this is about how you manage your customer relationships via an extensive database, which usually holds information such as contact details, emails, notes of conversations, and sales, in one easy access location.

Sydney Business Owners Beware!

The person that’s responsible for managing new website designs and builds, to ensure the ongoing needs of a company are met. Pioneered by Google during the 90s, this is the revenue based advertising model whereby the advertiser only pays when their ad is clicked on.

In short, this refers to the merging of many different strands of business data into a single and convenient data ‘hub’.

The software that underpins any digital part of your operations. your platform is the virtual foundation of your website and includes dynamic features like a CMS, e-commerce, and email marketing system. Refers to your website or software ‘code’, which can be accessed by anyone with the authority to do so – including developers who need to make functionality changes or improvements.

The majority of software you use will be proprietary and some website platforms are too. Many proprietary system providers close their source code so as to have control over its quality – and control all its revenue streams.

Budget 2014: What it really means for SMEs?

There’s been quite a lot of backlash in the press recently about this year’s budget and how it will affect Australian SMEs. Despite much of the reaction being less than favourable, overall the Budget is a positive one for SMEs. Here are some of the key take-outs: Tax cuts: From 1 July,

2015, the Corporate Tax Rate will be reduced to 28.5%, helping around 800,000 SMEs.

Industry Skills Fund:

From January next year, the Government will allocate $476 million over four years to a training fund for SMEs.

Exporting SMEs: SMEs

with export interests will benefit from a one-off capital injection of $200 million to the EFIC (Export Finance & Insurance Corporation), plus and extra $50 million to the EMDG (Export Markets Development Grants) program.

Fuel Excise: A fuel levy

surcharge will be reintroduced on 1 August 2014, which will be indexed to inflation every six months.

Extension of Unfair Contract Provision:

R&D Taxation: The R&D Tax incentive scheme will be cut, reducing offsets by 1.5% and potentially saving the government $620 million over four years. Mature Age Workers & Apprenticeships

As part of the Restart Program, businesses will receive up to $10,000, over 24 months, to hire fulltime mature age workers.

Deficit Tax Levy

Individuals with a taxable income that exceeds $180,000 a year, will pay a Temporary Budget Repair Levy at a rate of 2% for three years.

Faster pay is on the rise According to recent research by global online accounting software Xero, Australian SMEs are getting paid 19 days faster than they were two years ago. Worldwide, Xero’s analysis compared monthly invoicing activity for a group of 43,000 businesses, with the 37% time

reduction resulting in better cash flow for those SMEs who use online invoicing. When compared to two years ago, the research also shows that every month, SMEs processed nearly twice as many invoices in the Xero system, worth approximately US$1 billion.

Xero partly attributes the results to the

steady recovery of the global economy, while credit agencies are also reporting general improvements in payment terms.

Xero’s Australian MD Chris Ridd confirmed that the debtor day number is key to every small business’ success, ensuring bills get paid on time and more staff can be hired should the need arise.

Anyone who has ever seen a movie knows the name Tom Hanks. The awardwinning actor is one of the world’s most popular entertainers whose films have grossed over $4 billion worldwide.

I wish my babies could have the same sort of teacher, the same sort of friends.” In paying his respects to Farnsworth that night in front of the world, Tom Hanks reminded us of the true value and inspiration that teachers bring. It’s a great story, but it also has relevance in the business world. Because, being able to glean the knowledge of someone who has many years of business success will help to put you a long way ahead of your competitors.

That’s why it’s incredibly important to find a person who has the right amount of practical experience to help take your business forward. 2. Find a business you want to emulate Be prepared to put on a large amount of research before finding a business model that you want to be like. Don’t be scared of surrounding yourself with information and the knowledge of those who have been there already. And don’t let your pride get in the way - because it’s far better to be a rich imitator than a broke original thinker.

3. Recognise what you do best Be extremely clear on what your learning style, needs and ambitions are before jumping in. For instance, are you looking for someone to check up on you every day to keep you on track? Or do you long to be surrounded by a group of like-minded individuals that will keep you focused?

4. Be a sponge for information Talk to trusted friends and colleagues and find out who they’re using as mentors and business coaches. Ask them to tell you about their successes and failures. Also remember: mentors don’t necessarily need to be in the flesh, some of the greatest copywriters of all times have been mentors long after they left us. There is a wealth of untapped knowledge out there in books and manuals for you to get your hands on.

5. If I knew then… Everybody needs mentors. All the top leaders have mentors, even at the height of their powers. It’s part of what you need, whatever your age and position, to take that next step . Below we share with you what the world’s most inspirational business leaders learnt from their own mentors and what their advice would be to up and coming business owners.

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Jobs may have been a genius, but he was also smart enough to find people he could learn from. One of his first tutors was Regis McKenna, a legendary Silicon Valley marketer. Jobs sought him out even while Apple was still just a two-man operation in a garage. McKenna helped Jobs bring on Mike Markkula as Apple’s first angel investor and marketing guru. Markkula was an engineer by training but had worked in marketing at Intel. He joined Apple as an employee (for a time he was CEO) and created a set 10

of founding marketing principles to which Apple still adheres today, 35 years later. Later, Jobs befriended advertising expert Lee Clow of TBWA\Chiat\Day, who created Apple’s famous 1984 commercial and “Think Different” campaign. Clow became a lifelong advisor and friend to Jobs.

Life lesson: No matter how good you are, learn how to spot people who know more than you do, and then listen to them.

Spotlight on Business Success How one ordinary business owner swims against the tide to more than triple his profit margin… Scott Dunbar is interviewed by Steve Plummer. SP: Tell us about your business. We are a supplier and fitter of just about everything to do with wardrobes and storage solutions. We service Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast and have recently expanded our online division and sell nationally. Our premises is at Maroochydore where my 4 staff work.

SP: How are you travelling now? Things are going really well. Our reach has increased and we’ve now gone national. We now have a strong online presence. The variety of our clients has increased significantly. Our marketing funnel now works well. Most importantly we’ve gone from a very flimsy 2% - 7% profit margin to a very healthy 25% - 30% profit margin which I’m most happy about!

SP: Who are your clients? There has been a significant change in this from predominantly builders to more private clients. Currently these make up about 20% of our market but this is increasing all the time. Mal and Ian warned me before the GFC that one type of client was dangerous. Luckily I listened because this saved the business. SP: Turn back the clock 4 years – how were you travelling then? Badly. The opposite to now actually... We had no online presence. A very small percentage of the market. No funnel. Limited income. And I was ready to shut the doors. SP: What made the difference? The realisation I needed to get educated, not stick my head in the sand. Also getting the

right kind of mentor was a big step. They helped plan my strategy.

SP: What are the 3 biggest lessons you’ve learned about business and business success? Definitely understanding the ending. I had zero clarity as to where I wanted to be in 2 years, 3 years or 6 years. Knowing where you want to go is so important. The second thing is understanding your industry, know what’s coming and what you competition is doing. For instance growing our clients to private ones away from the builders prior to the GFC saved us. When the crisis hit, the building industry virtually shut down. The private clients, which we never had before got us through. And the last thing is you need to have a really good marketing strategy and funnel and stay proactive with it. When you do this you have the chance to shape yourself as the expert in the industry. Yes, that’s who you need to become because clients won’t come to you, you have to find them and shape your business for them. SP: What plans have you got for the future? We are moving away from installing be becoming suppliers. And we are doing this predominantly online with our flat pack solutions. We’ve gone national and will continue to grow that and soon we’ll head overseas as well. SP: What would you say to anyone thinking about engaging StreetSmart for business coaching? There are some real gems out there if you go looking as Steve Plummer found out when he interviewed Head of AV Division Mike Hilliard… SP: Mike, tell me about your role as Head of Audio Visual at StreetSmart. Since joining StreetSmart in January 2012 my role has grown and grown and I have taken more and more responsibilities on. These days I am in charge of StreetSmart Audio-Visual Department managing all of our internet series, television, radio and audio campaigns. In addition to that I am in charge of our fulfilment processes and the new StreetSmart Business TV which is going really well, although the thing most of your readers will know me for will be for my work on events. I am the production manager for all of StreetSmart’s larger events, so you may have seen me sleep deprived running around like a headless chicken or trying to get 320KG of PA gear through the check-in at the airport. If you are one of those unlucky people who has ever been stuck behind me in the airport I sincerely apologise.

SP: What do you love most about what you do? Two things - the travel and the chance to be creative. I get to see all my friends around the country but also visit cities I hadn’t seen before. This job has taken me everywhere from Townsville to Geelong to Margaret River, and everywhere in between. Nothing is more satisfying than watching something grow from a piece of paper with scribbles on it to become a video on a client’s website with 30,000+ views. SP: What are your challenges? I think I have the same big challenge as most people do….TIME. There is so much to do, and not enough time to do it.

SP: Outside of StreetSmart you’re in a band - tell me more about that. Yes, when I’m not working I’m writing or performing with the Perth based band LIGHTS OF BERLIN (www.facebook.com/lobaus), and we’re doing pretty well at the moment.


SP: I know you’ll want to answer “Mal Emery” or “Steve Plummer” to this one, so let’s leave StreetSmart people out of it for now… You’ve seen every speaker in the last few years which ones stand out? I would have to say probably Steven Essa is the most enjoyable. He is hilarious, full of content and actually one the nicest guys in the industry. I have all the time in the world for him. I also have to say Matt and Liz Raad are just absolutely amazing to work with, great people, great product and just amazingly lovely. They are the personification of Bambi in my mind.

It is a bit odd to be living this sort of double life wearing a suit and tie during the day and then leaving work to walk onto a stage in front hundreds or thousands at night, but it definitely does keep me incredibly busy. It really is my passion and probably the thing I enjoy doing the most for obvious reasons. If you enjoy artists like Coldplay, 30 Seconds to Mars or Maroon 5 you may enjoy our sound, so feel free to check it out. SP: How far do you see Lights of Berlin going? Well with a combination of luck and marketing principles I hope we can take this as far as we can. Were already doing really well, receiving messages from all over the world from people who enjoy our music from Kenya to the US, it’s a great feeling. And we continue to bigger and bigger with every month that passes, so who knows how big this thing could get. Who needs sleep anyway?

SP: What’s the biggest learning you’ve had from working in the StreetSmart environment? How much time have you got? I have learnt so much from this job. I constantly apply to principles from all of these speakers to my businesses, my projects and even the band and I can tell you… THIS STUFF ACTUALLY WORKS. It has improved my business, work and home life dramatically. It has been exponentially beneficial. Although another thing I think this job has also taught me is all the shortcuts of an airport, how much you can really fit in your suitcase and the ability to work without sleep.

SP: You represented Australia in sport as a teenager? Wow, that was a very very long time ago, but yes. I was chosen for Australia’s U16’s Fencing team. It was a lot of fun, I really did enjoy it. I took a pretty bad knee injury and then had a drop it for a few months. By the time my knee was back to strength I had already joined two bands and that took up most of my spare time. I mean I still go back from time to time, but these days my spare time is few and far between.

SP: Speculate for me – in 10 years’ time you’ll be… My music will have taken off but I will still be in business although I will have started a few more. I’ll be “retired” at 35, no question but I won’t stop, I’ll still do projects that truly interest me.

SP: What did you learn from your involvement at an elite level? I learnt a lot of things not only from sporting, but also from music. It really is however hard you work is what you should expect to get back out of it, if you put 100% in you will get 100% back. Sorry if I sound like a Disney special there.

Not your, like, typical Gen Y employee at all!

SP: You own 3 businesses – tell me more about that? I started my first business which was an events management company/band booking agency when I was 18 after spending a few years mixing shows at clubs and venues, as well as doing a lot of corporate work on the side. I realised there is much more money and rewards from running your own business compared to working for venues, and also a much better feeling whilst doing the work. I then structured that company to run completely without me so I could focus my time on other projects. It now just potters along quietly making me money. The other two businesses are a small recording studio based here in Perth and obviously the band, selling merchandise, CDs, online streams and performances.

SP: Wow. I must say, you’re not a typical Gen Y kid. You don’t say “like” at the start of every “like” sentence and all during our chat you haven’t Tweeted, Facebooked, Snapchatted, Pinterested or texted once. Do you feel different to your peers? Yes and no. I’m still a Gen Y at heart. I will definitely freak out if I lose my iphone. I am tech savvy obviously but there’s no point in staying like a 12 year old, the world is much bigger than that. 23

by implementing these four 4 simple steps. Written by Ruth Knight. Ruth is a trainer, consultant, non-profit business advisor and director of Pillars of Best Practise. If you employ staff, there is a high chance that at some stage you will have an employee who does not meet your expectations, turns up late, takes multiple sick days, displays signs of apathy and laziness, or is otherwise a poor performer. If you experience staff problems often, make no mistake – this is costing your business thousands of dollars. Most people think that an annual performance appraisal is the way to manage poor performance. But appraisals are rarely conducted properly. They involve a bureaucratic process that makes everyone involved either nervous or cynical and can be undermined by unnecessary politics in the process (and even personal agendas in some cases). Worst of all, the issue of how to deal with under-performance is almost never addressed by performance appraisals. They don’t help you talk about your expectations, team dynamics, morale, and the employee’s contribution towards your businesses strategic goals. The latest research indicates that a new approach is needed. If you can manage your employees more effectively, you will save thousands in recruitment, training and management costs. Not only that, as an added bonus, your staff will be happier, more engaged and innovative. Implement these four simple steps now and you will start to save your business money.

Step 1

Put in place a system that ensures you have regular conversations with ALL your employees about how they are performing and what challenges they are facing. This should be no less than monthly and in some businesses (or with some employees) it should be weekly. Document these ‘conversations’ as a record of what you have discussed and actions that have been agreed upon.

Step 2

If you identify that an employee is underperforming, then talk about your concerns with them as quickly as you can. If you allow the poor standard of performance to continue, then they will assume this is the agreed level of performance required, and it will set precedence for others.

Step 3

Allow the employee an opportunity to explain why they are underperforming. It may be as simple as a lack of understanding and confidence in asking for assistance or it may be personal issues that are impacting on the job. Find out why the poor performance is happening and agree together how to address it.

Step 4

Give the employee an agreed timeframe to improve their performance. Explain the consequences if they don’t improve to your expectations. Monitor their progress, ensuring you provide supportive, positive and constructive feedback. Continuous improvement strategies are imperative in these circumstances. Remember to document all meetings, especially if you intend to implement your ‘Disciplinary Policy’ as you will need to record what you have said and done to help the employee improve, before you terminate their employment contract. While dealing with difficult employees and poor performance can be hard and challenging, remember, this is your business and the longer you leave dealing with employee problems, the more time and money you are wasting.

On the other hand, establishing effective performance management systems can have significant benefits for your business, as it leads to happier, more motivated and better performing employees and reduces human resources costs.
