LETTER FROM THE MIAMI BEACH MAYOR

Art Deco Weekend | 6 | Miami Beach 2019

LETTER FROM JOEL LEVINE ART DECO WEEKEND CHAIR WHEN MY PARENTS RETIRED to South Florida, I made it a tradition to visit several times a year, usually during the winter. My father was a huge fan of Art Deco and he introduced me to Ocean Drive sometime around 1985 or 1986, when the renewal was only beginning. When he passed away, in June at the age of 101, his apartment had three framed Art Deco Weekend posters from the years 1989, 1996 and 2000, and a large long photo of the buildings on Ocean Drive. I used to schedule my trips to Florida to include the three day Martin Luther King weekend so I could attend Art Deco Weekend and absorb this festival of color, shape and sound. Little did I expect that one day I would be honored with the privilege of Chairing the 42nd Annual Art Deco Weekend. Three years ago I trained to became a Tour Guide for the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL). We tour guides are not given a script; we are given an education in the history and architecture of Miami Beach, and then we each prepare own tour, emphasizing those buildings and historical items we value the most. Because there is so much to say and so little time to say it, I usually begin my tours with the disclaimer, “We will spend at least the next 2 hours on a 1 1/2 hour tour.” And now I have an opportunity to introduce this year’s program and there is so much to tell you. Our theme is “Deco Dreams: Past, Present, Future.” While we are continuing to celebrate the culture and architecture of earlier periods, we chose to take this time to take stock of the present and discuss the future. Miami Beach, like the rest of the world, stands on the precipice of climate change and we will devote a lecture to resiliency, planning a future so that future generations can enjoy what we are enjoying today. We also continue most earlier features including the lecture series, an enhanced tour schedule, and special interest shows including the Retro Fashion Show, the Bark Deco Dog Show, and the Classic Car Show. We have made some changes, emphasizing the food experience with, for the first time in Art Deco Weekend, a Culinary Tent. Please join us to watch chefs create and share their favorite dishes. We have also added more chairs and benches with umbrellas to make for a more welcoming and comfortable experience while the restaurants on Ocean Drive have been offered the option of expanding their table service into Ocean Drive. We have also expanded the music program with two stages featuring Big Band and Jazz music. One show, even one with more than 80 events, cannot be all things to all people, so we have decided to organize a separate “Child’s Deco” in the summer when schools are out and camps are planning daily events. We are also in the early stages of planning a yet unnamed event to celebrate Miami Modern (MiMo) architecture and culture in the North Beach region of Ocean Terrace. As I stated at the beginning of this letter, it has been an honor and privilege to be a part of Art Deco Weekend. I hope each and every visitor enjoys the festival as much as I did assisting in its development and management.

Art Deco Weekend | 10 | Miami Beach 2019

LETTER FROM JACK JOHNSON MDPL CHAIR WELCOMETO THE 2019 edition of Art Deco Weekend! Our theme this year is “Deco Dreams: Past, Present, Future.” We are commemorating the 40th anniversary of the listing of the Art Deco Architectural District in the National Register of Historic Places. That designation in 1979 was the first and most important accomplishment of the Miami Design Preservation League. Everything we have accomplished in the 40 years since then has built upon and expanded upon that victory. And you can see the results all around you in the beautifully preserved hotels along Ocean Drive, the commercial buildings on Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue, the apartment buildings in the Flamingo Park neighborhood and the single family homes west of the Park. But as our theme implies, we aren’t just looking to the past. We’re also planning for the future - a future that continues our work of preserving the architectural heritage of Miami Beach for future generations - not only Art Deco, but also Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern architecture. It’s a challenging future. Sea level rise is threatening the very existence of our beautiful city and its extraordinary architecture. But we aren’t ignoring that threat; we’re meeting it head on and planning for ways of preserving these buildings in spite of sea level rise. We invite you to join us in this important work by going to MDPL.ORG and becoming a member of MDPL. As for the present day, let’s all revel together in the joys of Art Deco Weekend! We’ve got more activities for you than you can possibly fit into your ADW schedule - music, food, shopping, guided tours, films, lectures and more. I personally recommend the Jazz Age Art Deco VIP Lounge, the Culinary Tent, the Ocean Drive and Beyond tour, the Flamingo Park neighborhood House Tour, the official MDPL Gift Shop, the Miami Beach Antiques Show, the Busby Berkeley film “The Gang’s All Here” and Jeff Donnelly and Nancy Liebman’s lecture on the origins of the Miami Beach Art Deco preservation movement. You can find the details for all these events in this Program Guide. And there’s lots more to choose from. HAVE A GREAT ART DECO WEEKEND!

ART DECO: Luxury to Mass Market

The Wolfsonian-FIU’s first exhibition on Art Deco is a sight to behold. Visit the museum at 11th and Washington Avenue, just down the street from the Art Deco Welcome Center. By Silvia Barisione and Shoshana Resnikoff

LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE Miami Beach Art Deco district, The Wolfsonian–FIU stands out for its 1927 Mediterranean Revival building conceived as a storage facility by Robertson & Patterson, the architects of the contemporary Temple Israel in Miami. An intricate ornamented bas-relief inspired by the 16th century Spanish plateresque façade of the University of Salamanca marks the entrance, while the lobby is dominated by a monumental window grill, which represents a “frozen fountain”, a typical Art Deco motif consisting of a symmetrical composition of ascending water jets and stylized phytomorphic elements. This imposing glazed terracotta relief once embellished the façade of the Norris Theater in Norristown, Pennsylvania. When the theater was demolished in 1983, the relief was saved by Micky Wolfson to become part of his collection. Introduced at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des

arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, the “frozen fountain” idea was imported to the US by the famous French blacksmith Edgar Brandt, who used the motif in his elaborate ironwork for the Cheney Brothers storefront on Madison Avenue in New York. The Wolfsonian’s “frozen fountain” is just one of many Art Deco objects in the museum’s collection, and for the first time since opening to the public in 1995. The Wolfsonian is presenting an exhibition focused on the style. Deco: Luxury to Mass Market intends to show—through a selection of over 100 objects from the collection—the itinerary of Art Deco, which was celebrated at the 1925 Paris Expo, traveled from France throughout Europe, and finally reached the United States, achieving a unique tropical version in the architectural development of Miami

Beach in the mid1930s. In each country, Art Deco presented different outcomes according to local traditions, which were combined with modernist tendencies and were inspired from nature, historical precedent, abstract geometry, and exotic cultures. The exhibition starts with some outstanding examples of European luxury pieces, such as the 1924 plate designed by the Italian architect Gio Ponti for Richard Ginori, the French vase Mappamonde [Globe] by Henri Rapin and Victor Menu for the Sèvres porcelain factory, and the vase Kracht [Strength] by Theo Colenbrander, a model of which was

presented in the Dutch pavilion at the 1925 Paris expo. While the United States chose not to participate in the Paris fair, delegations of museum directors, curators, and department store buyers traveled to the show and witnessed the flourishing of design there. They were responsible for bringing these new styles to the United States in the form of museum exhibitions and retail shows. Individual designers also capitalized on the style, such as émigré designer Paul Frankl, whose Skyscraper bookcase captures one of the first American innovations of Art Deco: the introduction of the skyscraper as a design motif. heights of newly built towers such as the Waldorf Astoria and the Chrysler Building, the Skyscraper bookcase has a stepped outline that mimics the developing skylines of American metropolises. Designer Norman Bel Geddes’ Manhattan cocktail set is another example of the power of the skyscraper. Bel Geddes was also a pioneer of streamlining, which was the used curvilinear design and the elimination of right angles and ornament to reduce drag and friction on cars, trains, and ocean liners. He also applied those design principles to stationary objects, and other industrial designers followed suit. The result was stream-

Art Deco Weekend | 18 | Miami Beach 2019

lined design on everyday appliances and home goods, which invoked in American consumers ideas of progress and forward movement. The relationship between streamlined objects and the architecture of the Art Deco District is clear, from the “racing stripes” on the Hercules refrigerator pitcher and the curved angles and circular knobs on Walter Dorwin Teague’s Sparton radio, both of which can be seen in the horizontal bands, window overhangs, and rounded corners of the Essex Hotel on Miami Beach. The question of how Miami Beach came to have this remarkable collection of architecture finds an answer in the 1933 Chicago A Century of Progress Exposition. As Miami Beach was emerging from the Great Depression, a hotel-building boom prompted architects to turn to the newly opened Chicago world’s fair for inspiration for the hotels and apartment buildings that today make up the core of the Art Deco District. This can best be seen in a poster from the fair, where the Hall of

Science has a central spire and low slung, horizontally extending wings that visitors to Miami Beach can recognize in the architecture of hotels throughout the Beach. Neon was featured prominently throughout the Chicago fair, lining buildings and illuminating them in much the same way as it lights up Ocean Drive today. At the end of the exhibition, a guidebook suggests some comparisons between the items on display and the Art Deco buildings in the neighborhood. Visitors can find another “frozen fountain” in the bas-relief panels at the entrance of the 1935 Congress Hotel by Henry Hohauser, for example, and can also recognize the fluting motif of the silver plated container by the German silversmith Otto Stüber and the chrome-plated Diplomat coffee set by Walter von Nessen in the Palmer Hotel façade designed by L. Murray Dixon in 1939. In this way, Deco: Luxury to Mass Market invites both visitors and residents of Miami Beach to explore the dimensions of this far-reaching and global style.

DIRECTOR’S TALK | SKIN DEEP: DECO AND DEATH • 3PM – 4PM Tim Rodgers

Art Deco is known for its sinuous curves, polished surfaces, sensual materials, and erotic depictions of the male and female body. But during Deco’s height in the 1920s and ’30s, physical health was under enormous threat. How and why did its fantasies become so misaligned with the realities of the world? In this Art Deco Weekend edition of his popular talk, Tim invites you to take a fresh look at the ideals on view in the Wolfsonian’s Deco: Luxury to Mass Market. Tim Rodgers, PhD, has directed The Wolfsonian–Florida International University, a museum and research center located in Miami Beach since 2015. He received his doctorate and master’s degrees from Brown University. His area of expertise is modern and contemporary American art. He has authored numerous articles, curated a wide range of exhibitions, presented lectures throughout the United States, and has served as a consultant for the Walt

Disney Real Estate Development, the Heinz Foundation, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, among others.

LECTURE SERIES

Sunday, Jan 20th PRESERVATION: “PRESENT’ • 11AM TO NOON Tom Mooney, Sandor Scher and Cesar Garcia-Pons Moderator: Tanya K. Bhatt

The tale of two Miami Beach neighborhoods is a story of a recognized problem that existed for many years. North Beach - an area from 63rd Street to 87th Street - was neglected while South Beach became recognized as the center of the universe for historic preservation ethic. This year, forty years after the Art Deco district’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places, North Beach is about to come alive again thanks to a Master Plan designed by the architectural planning firm of Dover Kohl and Partners. Their study was a comprehensive plan for the designation of the area’s MiMo (Miami Modern) architecture and a redevelopment plan for the area’s Town Center that resulted in a zoning change approved by nearly 60 % of the electorate. The panel will discuss current plans for North Beach as the example of preservation and new development working together. This is the second in a three-part festival lecture series on the Past, Present, and Future of Preservation in Miami Beach. Thomas Mooney is Planning Director for the City of Miami Beach. Sandor Scher is a principal of Ocean Terrace Holdings and Claro Development. Cesar Garcia-Pons is an Urban Designer and principal of garcia-pons+associates. Tanya K. Bhatt is a Miami Beach resident and president of Miami Beach United

DISCOVERING AFRICA IN ART DECO DESIGN AND BEYOND • 1PM - 2PM Dr. Margaret Vendryes

The opportunity to revisit a theme taken on at Art Deco Weekend 1996 while she was a PhD candidate at Princeton University, Vendryes is taking a close look at what she shared then and what research and writing about African art as an inspiration for Art Deco design has become available since. Writers have revealed, over these 23 years, how aesthetics of what was considered “The Dark Continent” is reflected in objects and images that significantly mark the era. Margaret Rose Vendryes is an artist, art historian, and curator. She has an established record of publications including her book Barthé, A Life in Sculpture (2008) and exhibitions including Blues: Reflections on African America from the Amistad Research Center Fine Arts Collection (New Orleans Museum of Art, 2010). She also has a multimedia studio practice inspired by African aesthetics and its intersection with black music and visual culture. She is currently Professor of Art History and Chair of Performing & Fine Arts and Director of the Fine Arts Gallery at York College, City University of New York. www.mrvendryes.com

PRESERVATION: “FUTURE” 3PM - 4PM • Laura Weinstein-Berman and Daniel Ciraldo

Art Deco Weekend | 22 | Miami Beach 2019

Often Historic Preservation is misinterpreted as “anti-development.” However, the most forward thinking development is adaptive reuse, where Historic Districts allow the balance of thoughtful infill architecture, and existing resources to be considered as positive contributors to mitigation efforts of long-term resiliency and sustainability planning. Historic Preservation preserves the ability to change for future generations, while supporting the continuity of a community’s inherent social resiliency. Existing resources should be considered part of our green infrastructure worthy of creative adaptation and public investment. This discussion will center on the future of historic preservation and solutions for the City of Miami Beach to be a leader in investing in adaptation solutions.

This is the third in a three-part festival lecture series on the Past, Present, and Future of Preservation in Miami Beach. Laura Weinstein-Berman, AIA, NCARB is an architect, preservationist, and Managing Director at Vagabond Group Consulting. She is on the board of the MiMo Biscayne Association and manages the Miami Design Preservation League’s Center for Resiliency and Sustainability initiatives. She holds a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from the University of Miami. She is a proud resident of Miami Beach. Daniel Ciraldo is Executive Director of the Miami Design Preservation League. He holds a Bachelors in Finance and Marketing from Stern School of Business at New York University.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES By Nancy Liebman

BACK IN THE DARK DAYS of Miami Beach, when the preservation movement was dawning, the City was at a loss on how to encourage any development. The hotel industry was suffering. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, the new trend was to demolish the magnificent mansions along Collins Avenue to build hirise apartment buildings in what was called “Millionaire’s Row”. As condo dwellers - a new word was added to our vocabularymoved into “Millionaire’s Row”, they had all the luxuries they needed, apartments rather than hotel rooms, card rooms instead of entertainment galas in hotels, and restaurants in their lobbies. Over the years, the beach Tourism was sinking along with the economy. By 1976, the Beach leaders thought they had the real solution for the building drought. They approved a plan for the southern part of the Beach from 1st to 6th Street called the “South Beach Redevelopment Plan” and appointed a committee of developers and lobbyists to design a replica of Venice Italy. The plan was to demolish the entire neighborhood of Miami Beach’s original homes and drive out the population of elderly residents. The elderly rebelled and Barbara Capitman discovered the Art Deco District in 1976. A groundswell of residents, architects and designers met at the boundary line between the

Venice Canals to-be and the newly discovered Art Deco District in the making. The Venice Canals-to be began waning and the preservationists began their long drive to save the city’s architectural heritage from 1st to 23rd Street. But the Redevelopment Agency fought to keep the preservation out of their territory. The preservationists succumbed and moved the southern boundary to above 6Th Street. In 1979 the Deco dream came true. With the help of the National Trust for Historic Preservation joined together with the Miami Design Preservation League activists and in the stroke of a pen, after an in-depth study of the one square mile of authentic architectural gems, the Miami Beach Historic Architectural District was placed in the National Register of Historic Places as the first 20th century urban designation. This was a significant occasion that was celebrated in Lincoln Road on a darkened street devoid of retail stores, except for the long standing LUM’s Cafe. Bill Wade’s band was hired to play swing music that chilly night, and the fledgling preservation community turned out in force . It took until 1992 for the entire square mile of the local historic district to be designated to match the original boundary designated by the National Park Service long after the Venice Canals concept fizzled.

Miami COLORING BOOK

“My New Coloring Book, Color Miami Beach Art Deco celebrates Miami Beach’s architectural beauty.” THIS IS JAKE ROSE, AUTHOR of Color Our Town series of coloring books. My books depict both small towns and big cities in America through vivid and detailed line drawings. But until now, I have focused mainly on New York City and Long Island. That changed with a venture earlier this year when I visited Miami Beach with my family. Miami Beach is known for its beautiful Art Deco architecture, pristine beaches, and fascinating nightlife. The beautiful Art Deco architecture in particular was a perfect fit for a coloring book, as its simple yet elegant designs made it a natural fit for line drawings. The most striking aspect of Miami Beach is its multitude of ritzy and suave hotels. These include such masterpieces as the McAlpin, the Cavalier, Essex House,

the Carlyle, the Breakwater, the Plymouth, the Delano, the Colony, Ocean Plaza, and the Crescent. Each of these hotels has a unique feature that makes them perfect for a coloring book. Those features range from boldly delineated geometric shapes to bold aquamarine colors and neon lighting. In short, Miami Beach was a blast. It was a great place to take my Color Our Town series to new horizons. It provided new opportunities to reach out to museums, theaters, hotels, and other locals of interest. It offered fresh perspectives on architecture as art. Most importantly, it showed how to mix a sense of business and fun together into one compact package.
