a The first Glen House Hotel, as seen in 1880, four years before it was destroyed in a fire. A fifth Glen House is set to open in Pinkham Notch by the spring of 2017.

Reincarnation Historic hotel rises again – for the fifth time The fifth incarnation of the Glen House Hotel will be a 67-room facility on a site in Pinkham Notch, owned by the Mount Washington Summit Road Company. With construction set to begin in the spring of 2016, and an opening date of spring 2017, the $11 million hotel would be located on an 18.16-acre parcel that most recently had been home to the Great Glen Trails building – a structure that was destroyed in an explosion and fire in 2001. The goal is to open the hotel by offering “business-level” amenities at first and eventually becoming a full-service facility.

Let’s make a deal NH-developed app rewards off-hours customers New Hampshire restaurants and restaurant-goers have something new to talk about with the recent launch of the dealici smartphone app for food lovers. The dealici app, developed in New Hampshire, aims to bring in more customers during a restaurant’s typically slower hours by rewarding diners with up to 50 percent-off deals. The app gives restaurant owners a way to fill seats during slower dining hours.

The hotel would also have a pool and restaurant and half of its rooms would have balconies facing Mt. Washington. The exterior design calls for a simple New England-style hotel with clapboards, painted trim and the signature chimneys, much like the previous four Glen Houses. The first Glen House opened in in 1852. The railroad had paid for the construction of the road through Pinkham Notch to Gorham, and shortly thereafter a bridle path from the Glen House to the summit of Mt. Washington was completed. The first Glen House burned in 1884 but was rebuilt on an even grander scale, including the longest veranda in the world. Unfortunately, the second hotel lasted only eight years before fire struck again. Two subsequent smaller Glen Houses served guests in winter and summer into the 1960s.

Dealici restaurant partners choose which plates to feature, how large of a discount they will offer, and specific dates/times when the discount will be available. Restaurants also can choose to set their deal redemption periods to align with their typical slower hours in order to bring in guests when they need the business most. Among the early adopters of dealici are Murphy’s Taproom, La Hacienda Del Rio, Cactus Jack’s, The Foundry and XO on Elm, all in Manchester, Blue Mermaid Island Grill and STREET in Portsmouth, O’Brien’s Sports Bar, Lui Lui and Nashua Garden, all in Nashua. AGENDA

a The next generation UNH hospitality program wins accolades

Key change Smartphone app could revolutionize hotel check-in When you stay at The Element Hanover-Lebanon you’re getting a taste of the future of hotel security. There’s no need to check in, stop in the front desk, or swipe your key card. With the Starwood Preferred Guest app, you just hold your smartphone near the lock of your room and walk right in. No need to check out either. Welcome to the new world of keyless entry technology, which might transform the hospitality industry the way perhaps Uber has revolutionized transportation and Apple Pay could alter banking. “It’s really neat,” said Matt Blanchette, the 120-bed hotel’s general manager. “We like guests to think of this as a home away

from home, so this way they can come and go as they please.” A guest can download the Starwood Preferred Guest app for free, similar to loyalty apps provided by many airlines and hotels. After making a reservation, the system looks for the guest to arrive via a location-enabled smartphone. After arrival in the area, the guest is emailed the room number and a code that enables the phone to unlock the door. Starwood, which has 1,200 properties in 100 countries worldwide, has been playing with keyless technology for some five years, and when smartphones were able to transmit digital code via Bluetooth, “it was a quantum leap,” said Brian McGuinness, senior vice president of Starwood’s Specialty Select brands. “Smartphones caught up to the technology.”

When it comes to educating the next generation of leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry, the University of New Hampshire is among the nation’s leaders. The UNH Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics’ Hospitality Management Program has once again been ranked in the top 10 percent of national business schools and colleges that focus on hospitality and tourism. Academic Analytics, which benchmarks academic excellence, ranked the programs based on several outcomes of excellence, including: Publication of scholarly work such as books and journal articles; citations to published journal articles; research funding by federal agencies; and honorific awards bestowed upon faculty members. The UNH Hospitality Management Program has consistently been ranked among the top 25 programs in the United States and is the second-oldest, four-year degree program in the country, says Nelson Barber chair of the program. “This level of national recognition validates the hard work, dedication and value these faculty researchers deliver through their commitment to high-quality research.”

Number 9 Opponents want hut plan to take a hike For the first time in 50 years the Appalachian Mountain Club wants to add to its hut system in New Hampshire, but its plans have engendered controversy. The area lodging industry has been raising objections to the nonprofit’s plans for a ninth hut in New Hampshire, along with the NH Department of Fish and Game and White Mountain National Forest officials. The newly proposed hut would be the first one built by AMC that is not in the White Mountain National Forest – this one would be in Crawford Notch State Park. AMC officials have said overnight hut utilization has tripled since

1965, prompting the move to expand. The new one would be called the Sparkling Cascades Hut and would be located near Ripley Falls, about midway between the AMC’s Zealand Falls Hut and Mizpah Spring – a 14-mile distance along the Appalachian Trail that is the longest hut-to-hut stretch in New Hampshire. In addition, the hut would be the first to be constructed with winter selfservice in mind. An economic study conducted by Plymouth State University and released by the AMC shows spending by out-of-state overnight guests at its White Mountains huts and lodges supported $17.9 million in economic activity throughout New Hampshire between June 2014 and May 2015, and 73 percent of the economic activity benefited businesses other than AMC.

The study says that AMC huts and lodges are “an integral part of the regional tourism landscape” and “play an important quantitative role in the North Country’s economy, by creating visitor spending that ultimately leads to the creation of jobs, income and taxes.” But opponents are raising concerns about the proposal. Objections include fears about what construction of the facility would do to the wilderness of Crawford Notch State Park as well as an impression that the AMC caters to wealthy, out-of-state customers and prices out local visitors, since nightly lodging costs over $100 per person. Right now, the plan is in the hands of the state Department of Resources and Development, which will then send its recommendation the governor and Executive Council.

Details, details, details 8

Taking care of the little things will keep your guests — and the host — happy By Keri Laman Great parties delight the senses, lift the spirits of the guests – and the host – and are talked about well after the lights are turned off. But it’s important to remember that spending a lot of money isn’t what makes your party great. It’s the details. With personal touches, thoughtfulness, extra planning and a strong team of experts, your event details will come together magically. So how do you get on this enchanted list of “great party hosts”?

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2016

1. Choose a unique location Thinking outside the traditional ‘venues’ will help in creating a unique atmosphere, but it can create additional work for you. Of course, if your budget allows, anything is possible. But more likely, you are working with monetary guidelines dictating your decisions. Remember that “style” can be achieved on any budget, and nothing is more valuable than simple good taste.

2. Work with a strong caterer or event planner who has a clear understanding of your parameters and vision. Be willing to listen to his or her expertise and ideas.

3. Choose a theme What kind of event are you coordinating? What is the dress code? Will the décor and food have a synchronized theme? Remember that oftentimes “less is more”!

4. Rentals and other vendors Most events need rentals of some sort such as tents, chairs, linens, coat racks, lighting and more. Choose floral arrangements, a photographer and entertainment.

5. Service ware Will you choose to have glass, china, silver or highgrade disposable service ware? This detail should coordinate with the theme.

6. Beverages Will there be a bar? Would you like a specialty drink of the night? What type of bar will it be (i.e. host, cash or corkage)? And make sure your caterer has a liquor license!

8. Inclement weather If your event is outdoors, you may want to devise a backup plan ahead of time in case the weather is uncooperative.

9. Additional details Check with the caterer about a “leftovers” policy. Be sure to be fully aware of all payment policies. Check to see if pricing includes gratuity and taxes. Find out when your deposits are due. Remember, happy guests make a fabulous party, so be inspired to try a new venue and revel in the results. NH’s breweries offer a great taste of the Granite State By Erica Thoits How do you define New Hampshire? As a member of the New Hampshire Magazine staff, I’m always trying to answer that question. Over the past 10 years, the best thing I can come up with is really a list of contradictions. New Hampshire is rich in history and steeped in tradition (as is much of New England, but that doesn’t make it any less part of our personality), but from the North Country to the Seacoast there are pockets of modern art and culture that push back at and challenge those very traditions. We are home to both gorgeous natural wonders and businesses on the cutting edge of technology. We balance the rural with the urban, history with innovation and, yes, Yankees with hipsters. We are as proud of our wonderful farms as we are of the astounding inventions that come from Dean Kamen and DEKA. As a result of our diverse state personality, there is no single ultimate New Hampshire beer (unless someone’s figured out how to brew with the essence of granite, that is). In order to get a true taste of New Hampshire, I recommend that you sample beers from all of our excellent breweries, but with more than 40 now open — and counting — I get how that might be a bit challenging (I realize not everyone gets paid to research beer for months on end). To narrow it down, here are the breweries I find myself returning to, some exciting newcomers and the ones I think best highlight various aspects of the Granite State. Call it the Essence of NH Beer List. Taste

10

one from each, and I believe that you’ll be well on your way to defining what New Hampshire — and its beer — is all about. And if you do happen to figure it out, please let me know.

Hobbs Tavern & Brewing Representing the balance of new and old are several breweries that are tapping into local history, from operating out of historic sites to brewing beers inspired by New Hampshire’s past. Hobbs Tavern & Brewing Co. in West Ossipee is located in a renovated suspension barn that happens to be the only one of its kind still standing in New Hampshire. The barn itself (and the rest of the facility) is situated on a former sheep farm built in 1885 by the Hobbs family, who left England and first settled in New Hampton in 1637. Many years later, General Nathaniel Hobbs fought alongside Generals Stark and Washington in the Revolutionary War, paying the 34 men in his command with the proceeds from the sale of the New Hampton farm. In an odd NH beer coincidence, the farm Nathaniel Hobbs sold happens to be Throwback Brewery’s new location. Eventually, the Hobbs family made its way up to West Ossipee and never left — though the farm was eventually sold and now houses the tavern and brewery, there are four Hobbs descendants still living in the town.

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2016

Co-owner Ash Fischbein is all about complementing the brewery’s rich historical roots by keeping things as local as possible. He is adamant about maintaining a farm-to-table and farm-to-beer operation, using local ingredients whenever possible. They’re also planning to extend their two-acre hop yard to 10 in the next two years. Fischbein, who was born in the area, says the biggest thing to him is to help revitalize West Ossipee by giving people a reason to stop and stay rather than just pass on through. That, and to make delicious beer, of course. On tap you’ll find a number of sessionable beers (lighter, lower alcohol content beers) that are flavorful and easy drinking. Here you can come and enjoy a few brews without sliding under the table.

rare brews and Smuttlabs beers, also strives to keep the food local as well. Don’t miss the daily selections on the “Chef’s Chalkboard,” including the catch of the day and local butchery specials that are made with locally sourced ingredients.

Schilling Beer I did say that there’s no ultimate New Hampshire brewery, but Littleton’s Schilling Beer Co. comes incredibly close. The brewery is located in one of the oldest commercial buildings north of Concord — a converted 18th century gristmill on the Ammonoosuc River. Altogether, the owners and the brewery perfectly capture the rustic, outdoors-loving, communitycentric, history-steeped culture of the area. They specialize in traditional Belgian, German and Czech styles, but don’t be surprised to taste something new and exciting dreamed up by brewer John Lenzini.

Smuttynose Brewing Though the Hobbs location is certainly a special part of our state’s history, there are other New Hampshire breweries that call former farms home. When Smuttynose Brewing Company finally decided to expand, they spent the time to find just the right spot — the historic Towle Farm in Hampton. The location goes back to the late 17th century and the Smuttynose’s 39 Hayseed Restaurant is housed in a Victorian era farmhouse situated right across from the stateof-the-art brewery. The restaurant, which has more than 6 two dozen taps pouring Smuttynose beers, including

Must-visit breweries Find a similar mountain culture vibe and atmosphere at the always-excellent Woodstock Inn, Station & Brewery in North Woodstock. Celebrating 20 years of brewing, this is one of the places that can claim credit for starting the craft beer movement in New Hampshire along with other long-standing breweries including Portsmouth Brewery, Moat Mountain Smoke House & Brewing Co. in North Conway, Elm City Brewing Company in Keene, Milly’s Tavern in Manchester, Flying Goose Brew Pub & Grille in New London, Tuckerman Brewing Company in Conway and Martha’s Exchange in Nashua. Consider them the must-visit breweries to fully understand New Hampshire’s craft beer movement roots. The newly opened Millyard Brewery is in Nashua, and, like nearby Manchester, the city was once home to a booming textile mill industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s this history that inspired co-owners Dean Baxter and Ken Unsworth to offer four year-round beers that celebrate Nashua’s mill past. Look for the Jackson IPA, which was named for the Jackson Manufacturing Company of the mid 1800s; The Amoskeag Pilsener was named for Manchester’s Amoskeag Mills, which were leaders in their time; Boot Porter comes from Kirk Boot, a founding leader of the Merrimack Mills in Lowell; and, last but not least, there is the Nashua Pale Ale, Millyard Brewery’s session ale. Does the country owe a big, overdue thank-you to New Hampshire for kick-starting the American Revolution? Maybe. In 1772, Ebenezer Mudgett rallied his fellow Granite Staters in the Pine Tree Riot that protested the unfair fines on sawmills that dared cut the King’s pines (white pines more than 12 inches wide were marked with the King’s Broad Arrow for use as masts for Royal Navy ships). Many consider it the inspiration for the later Boston Tea Party. Celebrate our patriotic history at Able Ebenezer Brewing Company in Merrimack, founded by three retired US Army officers. Try the unique Burn the Ships smoked IPA or the Broad Arrow IPA and really savor our revolutionary history.

Farm-to-table New Hampshire has a proud farming history and a growing farm-to-table movement. Both of these can — and do — apply to beer. In 2009, the Davis family purchased the Meloon Farm in Effingham and set about bringing it back to life. They started by planting certified organic hops and re-named the farm Misty Mountain (now also certified organic) and started brewing beer as The Prodigal Brewery. Their German-style lagers are brewed with water from an artesian well that draws from New Hampshire’s largest stratified drift aquifer, the Ossipee. The brewery itself is located in an outbuilding on the 12

farm, where the spent grain feeds the goats, yeast and hops are composted and excess water irrigates the hop yard. The brewery is not open to the public, but visit the website for a list of locations that carry their beers. I also highly recommend Throwback Brewery, now located at the 1860s farmhouse on Hobbs Farm in North Hampton. Throwback’s admirable mission is to source 100 percent of their ingredients from within 200 miles of the brewery. Currently, depending on the beer, they are anywhere from 70 to 90 percent there. Then there’s 7th Settlement Brewery in Dover. Here history (many beers bear names of historic Dover events) meets local sourcing and a sense of community, as 7th Settlement is a community-funded and – supported brewpub where local ingredients are sourced from 50 local vendors, including hops from the Isinglass River Hops Exchange in Somersworth. This is a mustvisit for any fan of craft beer or supporter of local businesses.

New Hampshire has a proud farming history and a growing farm-to-table movement. Both of these can – and do – apply to beer. If it’s innovation you seek, then check out White Birch Brewing in Hooksett where there’s always something new and interesting to try. Then there’s Earth Eagle Brewings in Portsmouth. Here you’ll find gruits, a very, very old style of beer that uses other ingredients — like herbs — instead of hops. Let’s just say, it’s so old it’s new again. Finally, there’s 603 Brewery in Londonderry, which doesn’t fit any specific category other than simply loving New Hampshire. Started by three college friends who began with a goal of “making New Hampshire proud,” they’ve definitely achieved that goal and more, having more than quadrupled their brewing capacity since their beginning. Head to the tasting room and try the beers that each have a New Hampshire story behind the name, such as the 18 Mile Rye Ale (named for the length of our short seacoast), the Winni Ale (after Lake Winnipesaukee), White Peaks IPA (a tribute to the White Mountains) and more. You could make a case for including every single New Hampshire brewery here. Not to mention there’s a good chance your personal tastes are different than mine. All of our local breweries offer an aspect of the Granite State, and I encourage you to make your own Essence of New Hampshire List. Erica Thoits is associate editor of New Hampshire Magazine.

Want to host a successful event? Here’s how Whether it’s an open house or a formal occasion, hosting a successful gathering of a group of people requires paying attention to the proper execution of key details. Here are some tips to help you pull off an event that people will be talking about long after the event is over: • Planning an event with more than 20 people? Consider recruiting a co-chair to help with some of the details. • Use a personalized invitation to invite guests to your event. Follow up with the registrants and provide complete event details, such as location, time, directions and proper attire. • Invite customers, suppliers and prospects when creating your invitation list. • Generate targeted emails to these groups to let them know what you are offering. • Consider having a drawing to encourage attendance, such as a complementary service your company can provide or a coupon for something from a partner or supplier. • Get a sponsor for the event to help underwrite costs. • Make sure all invitations, notices and flyers include information to RSVP.

Consider recruiting a co-chair to help with details, like sending personalized invitations with RSVP information and reminders the day before. • Choose a time that will work for the greatest number of attendees and you. • Keep a current list of registrants, updating it to reflect new guests. • Send out more than one invitation. Some people don’t read the first one, so it is always good to follow up with a second and even third notice. • Twenty-four hours before the event, send a reminder email notice to your guest list to ensure as many guests as possible will show up the day of the event. • If you are charging for the event – to cover costs of the meal, location, etc. – have a deadline for sending in the money.

• Consider giving a prize or special incentive to all who register early, or hold a contest and choose a winner with a prize for early registrations. • Be sure to let the media know of your plans as they unfold – a release to announce the event, another release to announce special guests or speakers, a third release for sponsors and an overall release describing the event in detail. • If you do have a speaker, give her/ him adequate time to present allowing time for guests to ask questions. • Collect business cards or have a registration card at the sign-in table. This way you can follow up with your guests and thank them for attending.

Mobile technology for business travelers Through all-inclusive apps, you can use your mobile device to find deals for hotels, rental vehicles and airlines. By Matt Kasper Nothing beats a face-to-face connection with clients, and for many, that means business travel is an important part of the job. However, travel logistics can cause unwanted stress for even the most experienced travelers. Fortunately, there is a growing number of apps and accessories that business travelers can use with their mobile devices to streamline nearly every aspect of business travel, improving the experience, as well as saving time and money. From home to the hotel, your smartphone or tablet can help you get to your destination on time and on budget. There are a number of accessories and free apps that help simplify business travel and make it more enjoyable, and with a high-quality network and national coverage, it’s easier than ever to take advantage of some fantastic travel resources. Planning your trip: 68 percent of smartphone owners used their smartphone to assist them while traveling, according to a recent U.S. Cellular survey. You can use your mobile device to find the best travel deals with apps like Expedia, Orbitz and Kayak. These all-inclusive apps present deals for hotels, rental vehicles and airlines. In fact, the survey found 27 percent of smartphone owners have booked a hotel room 14

directly from their smartphone and 16 percent have purchased airline tickets. En route: Ever been that person fumbling at the ticket counter for your confirmation number? Go paperless with Gate Guru, which organizes your full travel experience – from flight and rental vehicle information, to airport amenities. On the ground: Upon arriving at your destination, you’ll want to look like a local. The Around Me app shows nearby restaurants, bars, banks and more, including directions to your destination. You might even be able to surprise your client with a recommendation. For longer trips, Postagram keeps you in touch with loved ones. Just take a photo with the app, and for a nominal fee your message will be delivered as a mailed postcard. After the trip: Filling out expense forms and gathering travel and dining receipts can be quite time-consuming. Concur Mobile’s app can help simplify this process by keeping track of receipts and expense charges from anywhere. The same U.S. Cellular survey found that 47 percent of smartphone owners have used apps to manage finances, and business is no exception. Matt Kasper is director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England.

Your key to a Superior Guest Experience

The Seven New Hampshire is made up of seven very different regions, each as exciting as the next. The Seacoast, Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee, Lakes Region, Merrimack Valley, Monadnock Region, White Mountains and Great North Woods are filled with natural beauty, cultural events and classic New England living. It’s one family vacation idea after another, and the only way to truly appreciate it all is to see it for yourself. Use this map to learn more about each of New Hampshire’s distinct, yet equally unforgettable, regions.

 GREAT NORTH WOODS Halfway between the Equator and the North Pole, the Great North Woods is at once rugged and inviting. This is where travelers over the centuries have come in search of beauty, adventure and inspiration, while enjoying legendary North Woods hospitality. Here is where you can go take a hike to watch the sunrise before breakfast, go fly fishing after lunch and get dressed up for an elegant dinner at a grand hotel. Whatever your passion, from fine dining to snowmobiling to camping under the stars, the Great North Woods is a destination in which to indulge it.

 WHITE MOUNTAINS If one New Hampshire region is synonymous with recreation, it’s the White Mountains. Forty-eight 4,000 foot peaks are found here, along with the highest mountain in the Northeast, 6,288-foot Mt. Washington; but it is the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest that truly shapes the region.

 LAKES REGION

Fully insured, professionally trained Valet Parking Attendants, providing services in NH, MA & ME.

The Lakes Region: The name alone stirs memories of blissful, sunny days spent on the water, the joy of vacations, boat rides and camp, when everything moved at a slow summer simmer; and you connected with people and places that still resonate within you today. Summer may be the Lakes Region’s best-known season, but wrap the hillsides in spring green, the blazing colors of fall or a thick blanket of snow, and it is every bit as magical. While there are 273 lakes and ponds in the Lakes Region, one lake dominates them all: Lake Winnipesaukee.

Regions of NH  DARTMOUTH-LAKE SUNAPEE If only one region of New Hampshire could be known as a study in contrasts, it would be the Dartmouth — Lake Sunapee Region. Named for Dartmouth — Hanover’s Ivy League college — and Sunapee — the crystal clear lake, State Park and mountain, all of the same name — the region includes quiet country roads and rolling farmland, pristine lakes, a bustling hub of higher education and medicine, and some of today’s favorite family activities and recreation.

 MONADNOCK REGION For the New England of picture books, you need go no further than the Monadnock Region. Here you’ll find small villages where white clapboard churches and town halls edge manicured town greens. Rolling fields with neatly planted rows quilt the hillsides, and country roads lined by rock walls invite exploration at a leisurely pace.

 MERRIMACK VALLEY In New Hampshire, where the capital’s name — Concord — is a synonym for harmony, it’s not surprising to find music and the performing visual arts central to life in the city and the entire Merrimack Valley Region. The state’s three largest cities — Concord, Manchester and Nashua — have an especially rich cultural life, with a variety of offerings year-round.

 SEACOAST New Hampshire’s seacoast captures the essence of New England’s oceanfront. In just 18 miles of coastline, there are long, sandy beaches, working ports, offshore islands, surf-stung rocks and popular resort towns and villages that date back nearly four hundred years. Many visitors begin their tours of New Hampshire along the coast, drawn by the sound and scent of the sea, and intrigued by all the region offers.
