HOMECOMING

The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha set out to create an event for the students at UTM and surrounding areas to enjoy that would offer a safe environment, great music, and good dancing. This goal was accomplished on September 25, 2010 when the Brothers hosted the ICEBREAKER: THE SEQUEL social event at Club Chaos. The facility was packed, the music was good, and most importantly, the students at UTM and surrounding areas had a really good time. We know that our guests appreciated the great security team that we had and also enjoyed the non-smoking facility in which our venue was held. All in all, we want to send a huge shout out to all of those students that have supported our

events...not just the parties, but mainly our programs and service projects. We also would like to extend the following words of thanks to several brothers that showed up or contributed in any form:

Daniel Kadeba Chris Glass Brian Bougard

As invited guests to our Miss Black & Gold Pageant and our audience for implementing our National Programs, 12 young men from our 9 county service area and Memphis will convene at the University on the Weekend of October 29-31, 2010. The young men will participate in our national programs, receive training in etiquette and character building, and

enjoy a panel of college men who overcame adversity to get to this point in their lives...college students. The symposium is all expenses paid and is for high school juniors and seniors. If any brother would like to make donations to help fund the event, anything is appreciated. Next issue will reflect on how well it went.

Though my guts were tossed, the wind brought ease there was no more heavy breathing...only knots of excitement. As I gazed upon this limitless ocean of wishes, I began to realize Some birds don't soar this high. Some have never seen these wonders... You tend to immediately get a new respect and appreciation for clouds. From my view point, they aren't just puffs of elements, but an exquisite structure ment to tickle the imagination in wonder... I swam amongst the clouds in the massive sky and soared beneath the crashing waves of the Atlantic. I've victoriously defeated the army of Portuguese Man-O-War...though they once thought the tide was their friend...it and I became allies. With every blink, I captured power and with every beam of the sun, I became enlightened. This wasn't a coincidence...I was supposed to be here. I found a totally new respect for the brotherhood. Goodwill was their monarch and cordiality prevailed. I sailed the great gusts of wind with a vigorous taste for conquest...these memories were mine to share, I just had to hold them captive... and then there sat, a lonely man, amidst a mural of life...embedded in his flesh, the "R" to forever tame his dream, but his soul was never conquered, for as they oppressed the very act of him escaping...they never could defeat the fact that he'd attempted...Even if he never saw freedom again...he'd already made his acquaintance. And as I gazed around, I saw all of the stories coming to life, from the beautiful African woman burned at the stake for "witchcraft" to the burdened wife looking Loathsomely on her husband as he courted their slave. Devishly in plot to get revenge! I hid in terror as the wild hogs that abounded slowly began disappearing...I wasn't hiding from the hogs, but from the men that raped the “even without wings, world. I saw the missionaries coming around teaching "their" gospel and witnessed a trade of spirits. And perhaps some birds still soar... the most disturbing thing was seeing the actual vessel that was the can for black sardines...

Why We Must Never Forget By: Bro. Anthony Prewitt It has been at least five years now since I became acquainted with a beautiful ebony woman who froze me on site as she recited a poem that she’d penned; “A Black Woman Speaks…” It’d been a minute since someone had truly kissed my soul and somehow brought understanding and purpose to a gift that I’d hid in the depths of my being. Beah Richards was born in 1920, in the town of Vicksburg, Mississippi. As an African American female, she knew all to well the painful and destructive nature of racism in the segregated South. Despite the conditions of the country at that time, the community of Vicksburg was rich with courage and pride. This was the foundation from which Beah learned to love herself and to love her community. It was out of this rich culture that Beah learned that she was “self-created.” This realization influenced her in every aspect of her life and gave her the courage to pursue her dreams, de“You must not betray your people - you must obstacles that spite all of the she was forced to face. fight for them, they fought for you.”

-Beah Richards Brothers, Beah Richards teaches us that we must never forget the works and fight of those that have come before us. As a historian, I find that oft times we seldom understand the depth of knowledge that those who’ve come before us possess. Beah teaches you to recognize the potential that one has within, but also to never forget those that have paved the way for us to be where we are now. In short, I would like to say thank you to the 7 Jewels of our great fraternity and a special thank you to the charter members of the Mu Beta Chapter who paved the way for all brothers of Mu Beta, Tau Psi, and wherever a brother from Alpha crossed for paving the way for men like us all who make a positive impact in our communities and forever uphold the light of Alpha!

A SCOTTS THANK YOU

I would just like to take the opportunity to say thank you to the Scott Family for the beautiful flowers that I recently received. Brother Scott, I feel that after our conversation, this quote was something that I needed to live up to! Thanks for being a true friend and brother, even though sometimes, my head is hard and my heart can be even harder: “Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.

CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY...

I was just wandering around the SGA Office and look what I came across. Reginald Williams became UTM’s first African American Student Government Association President in the year of 1985. This man broke a huge barrier by acquiring a position of prominence at a predominately white institution: meaning his influence transcended race. Blacks and Whites alike came together to make history by allowing our Brother to be their voice. On behalf of the brothers of Alpha, the 4 other black SGA Presidents that preceded you We salute you Bro. Reginald Williams and say thank you for opening so many doors.

Brothers traveled to Austin Peay State University to assist the brothers from the Tau Phi Chapter with their Freshmen Move-In. The brothers received a lot of compliments for their hard work ethic...particularly from Austin Peay’s Greek Life Coordinator, who bragged, “I knew these Greeks could not have been from my school...because they have a great work ethic about them. “ I was so proud to be an Alpha at that moment, as I smiled and told her that that’s what we are all about...SERVICE to All MANKIND! 8-25-2010

GO 2 HIGH SCHOOL, GO 2 COLLEGE & PROJECT ALPHA IMPLEMENTED IN TRENTON, TN The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated through the chapters of Beta Upsilon Lambda (Jackson, TN Alumni), Tau Psi (The University of Tennessee at Martin), and Beta Pi (Lane College) convened at New Spring Hill Baptist Church in Trenton, Tennessee on Saturday (September 25, 2010) to implement two of our National Programs. The Go To High School, Go To College initiative debuted in 1920. The fraternity ignited the Commission of Graduate Work and Public Affairs which launched a movement towards influencing African American students around the country to go to school and to college. Go To High School, Go To College aims at reaching youth facing challenges in graduating high school and encourages them to not only graduate, but to proceed on to college and graduate. Project Alpha was founded to combat the burgeoning statistics involving teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, while providing frank, open discussions and factual information from a male perspective to young boys. The third National Program of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; A Voteless People is A Hopeless People, was implemented earlier in the semester. Voter registration and education is it's primary focus. The Tau Psi Chapter will host a Men in the Making Youth Leadership Symposium October 29-31, 2010, where 12 young men from our service counties will attend workshops and participate in our National Programs. The Chapter is also anticipating it's Miss Black & Gold Scholarship Pageant on October 29, 2010. 12 young women will compete in a scholarship pageant that the fraternity has nationally mandated since 1976 where they will showcase poise, character, talent, and sophistication. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on December 4, 1906 in Ithaca, NY. It is the nations oldest inter-collegiate fraternity for African American males. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. 9-25-2010

AVOTELESS PEOPLE IS A HOPELESS PEOPLE The brothers of the Alpha Phi Alpha implemented the Voteless People is a Hopeless People national program on August 31, 2010 and September 2, 2010 at the University of Tennessee at Martin. In total, we registered approximately 151 new voters and assisted in updating 28 voter registration profiles. The purpose of A Voteless People is a Hopeless People is voter registration and education. Participants are encouraged to register to vote, understand zoning and districts as to prevent in-eligibility to vote in certain areas. They are also taught the do’s and don’ts of voting and campaigning and are educated on the platforms of candidates campaigning in their area. Another educational component is teaching registered voters how to properly vote, particularly explaining advances in technology when it pertains to campaigning and the actual voting machines.

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream---and not make dreams your master; If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same:. If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!
