THE G.O.L.D. E. N. ARMY has arrived! April 2, 2011 was a momentous moment for the brothers of Tau Psi Chapter as well as all brothers of the Martin Alpha Alumni Network as this would be the first time, since the return of Alpha Phi Alpha to the yard in 2008 and since the probate in 2009 that neophytes would be allowed to come out in traditional form since the moratorium has been in effect. For the first time, since the 15 Tenacious Titans of Tut, UTMartin welcomes 15 more brothers into this bond. The atmosphere was perfect and the day was sunny, as we started our march from Gooch Hall to meet the crowd that awaited us in the SKYHAWK

Field house. “And the echo resounds in all communities...and princely men are thereby recognized.” The crowd of students, families and friends cheered these men on as they officially became known to this campus and to the brothers here on out as: THE LAST HOPE: THE G.O.L.D.E.N. ARMY. I am proud of each of you and hope you uphold the name of our dear fraternity...you not only represent yourselves, but you represent the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated that helped build this house at the University of Tennessee at Martin. From the 9 Sons of Pharaoh to the G.O.L.D.E.N. Army. We welcome you into this house and want you all to know

Inside this issue:

that anytime you need us...we are here for you. Know that as Alpha Men, especially those crafted at the University of Tennessee at Martin; you are never alone. God Speed Neophytes, Love your Big Brothers

"We must never lose sight of the fact that we must take part in the development, not only of ourselves but of all humanity... I want you to understand that there never was or has been or will be, in the minds of the founders, including myself, the thought of any reward any notice coming to us for this experiment in brotherly cooperation and comradeship, which we initiated and which has developed, not necessarily because of any efforts of ours, into one of the best regarded organizations in the Negro collegiate world." ---Jewel Charles Henry Chapman, 1931

Thank You For Being A Friend! Tau Psi started the Golden Girl Project in late 2008 as a means of identifying dynamic young women who were doing positive things on campus, but hardly received recognition for having class, dignity, and academic achievement in their desired fields of study. The Golden Girls started out with 3 individuals, Sharnae Smith, Whitney Maxey, and Kaneshela Cox, but expanded to include girlfriends of some of the brothers and other young women who assisted us in our early stages of development. These women included Courtney Moore, Dominique Wilson, Mildred Lanier, Ashley Nichols, Brandi Campbell, and Angel Fair. Each woman exudes class and grace and many have moved on to pursue membership in D9 Sororities and other organizations. Now the Golden Girls are few. Each year, the chapter will select 7 women who dare to be different...women, who believe in service, academic stability, and most importantly know the value in self worth and respect. This issue, we pay homage to our Golden Girls who have parted ways and graduated from this institution of College rank, as well as those still grinding it out to matriculate. We pay homage to our very 1st Miss Black and Gold, Miss Leslea Robertson, who made history for the Tau Psi Chapter and most importantly to our recent Queen, Miss Gabrielle Mary Lewis who made it all the way to the Regional Pageant in Raleigh, NC. We pay homage to Whitney Maxey and Sharnae Smith who have an undying love for the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha. Most importantly, we look forward to seeing the Golden Girls of tomorrow. Representing class, sophistication, vision, grace, and intellectual rapport.

The art of loyalty‌celebrating brother Joshua Nehemiah wilson I submit this brief reflection with the utmost respect for whom it is intended. I meet Mr. Joshua Wilson some years ago, but we became acquainted on a more personal level when he sought membership into our dear brotherhood. Since his initiation, Brother Wilson has become a brother that I have always respected and loved. He has maintained an amazing grade point average and has dedicated countless hours towards making this brotherhood shine, whether it be in service to the community or service to his chapter. Josh, I just want to personally wish you nothing but success in your future endeavors and know that your dean will always be in your corner, no matter what you decide to do in life. You make me proud son and I know that the path you tread...only leads to greatness.

go to Brother Steven Smith for coming up with the theme, Brother’s DeMarcus Douglas, Lawrence Jennings, James Winters, and Steven Smith for assisting in putting together the Neophyte

All events went smoothly and were covered by our National Insurance Policy. It is of my opinion that the events were well though out and were something that the campus definitely enjoyed and appreciated. I think the biggest anticipation was the probate and everyone finally getting a chance to see who was on the “Alpha Line.” I just want to take a moment to once again commend the brothers for being innovative and pulling off a successful week. Special recognition should

Show, Brother James Winters and Josh Wilson for handling everything with the Party, Brother Anderson Guy for the Display and Board, Brothers Clennon Saulsberry, Mike Peeler, and Dexter Bates for the support, and all brothers and sorors that came down to support the neophytes on their big day including, TAU PHI @ APSU BETA XI @ LEMOYNE-OWEN BETA PI @ LANE KAPPA XI @ MTSU KAPPA ETA @ U OF MEMPHIS OMICRON PHI @ TN TECH XI GAMMA @ SEMO ZETA OMICRON @ MURRAY STATE KAPPA ZETA LAMBDA @ CLARKSVILLE

Bruhs from SIU Carbondale AND ANYONE WHO I MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN...CHARGE MY HEAD, NOT MY HEART!

A B rot h e r ’ s r e f l e c t i o n ! Greetings Brothers I wanted to write and tell you all how much I enjoyed celebrating Alpha Week at UTM this past weekend. It gave me great joy to see all of the young brothers. It took me back to 21 years ago this April 25th when I crossed the burning sands with the 15 Titans. I remember so well when the "old heads" back then would come to the campus and hang with us. It was a time to talk with older brothers and listen to their knowledge and wisdom. I was fascinated and inspired by their accomplishments and their success stories and also the history and legacy that they left behind at UTM. I was also encouraged and supported by those who shared their trials and tribulations in an effort to encourage us to press forward. It was their leadership, accomplishment, encouragement, and support that helped me along the way and I will always be eternally grateful for their inspiration.

ALPHA WEEK FROM “OLD HEAD”

AN

Now that I am considered to be an "old head" I will proudly wear that title. Not because I am old but because I want to be an inspiration, leader, and an encouragement to all of the young men who have joined our beloved Fraternity at UTM. I enjoyed sharing words of wisdom with some of the young men and instructing them on what Alpha Men should and should not be doing. It gives me joy to be there for you as many were there for me. I can see that we will once again assume our roles as the leadership of UTM from the days when we headed the SGA, BSA, and other Leadership positions

around the campus. Once again we are...First of all, Servants of all, and We shall Transcend all. If you ever need anything, advice, encouragement, or if you just need someone to listen and be there for you. Call me and I will do the best I can. O Lord may the true spirit of the fraternity rule our hearts, guide our thoughts, and control our lives so that we may become through thee servants of all.

CRAIGMONT CHIEFS WINS TSSAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! A congratulations is in order for Brother David Taylor for leading the Craigmont Chiefs to the TSSAA State Championship. Brothers, let us congratulate Bro. David Taylor for “coaching-up” his Craigmont High varsity basketball team and securing the 4th straight TSSAA BlueCross class AAA Boys Basketball Championship for Memphis. D.T. was magnificent on the sideline against the #1 ranked Knoxville Bearden Bulldogs in the Murphy Center at Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday. This was Craigmont’s first TSSAA championship in any sport. ___________________________________

This is why you practice everyday, why you put off playing Playstation .This is the reason why you spend countless hours in the gym pushing yourself when all you hear about is Melrose, White Station and Ridgeway. The state championship game,Craigmont vs Bearden and both teams left everything on the floor tonight. Some people forget about Robert Houston in the 2012 class locally but make no mistakes, he came up big tonight for his team. The 6’2 guard looked like he was back in Middle School when he was considered by many as the best player in that class in the city as he got off to a hot start hitting 2 3-pointers as Craigmont got out to a 8-5 but Bearden guard Ty Greene showed why he is one of the top guards in the state as well. The sharpshooting 6’3 guard hit a 3 and hit a quarter ending jumper for a 20-15 Bearden lead going into the 2nd quarter. Darius Gibson,a 6’6 junior forward got his team up with a two hand dunk off a missed 3 by Houston. Another 3 by Houston and a lay in by Sam Craft and the Chiefs were up 5, 25-20 with 5:25 left in the half. Bearden pg Dion Fair who was huge in the first half with 9 points took it straight down the middle off Craigmont’s press and layed it in for a 31-30 score and halftime lead for his squad. With Bearden shooting 54 percent, Craigmont had to figure out a way to slow Bearden’s big 3 which included Rico White who led all scorers with 10 at the half. Up 33-31 after a Houston 3, Craigmont took some quick shots and found itself down after a White 2 but Craft hit a corner 3 and got a steal and a lay up to put Craigmont back ahead with a slim 2 point lead, 37-35. Craigmont went up 5, 44-39 with 2:22 left in the 3rd but there was Fair again slicing through for a lay up and the free one to make it 44-42 as Craigmont simply couldn’t shake away Bearden but they started to show signs of slowing due to the pace of the game. Ty Greene hit a jumper to open the final quarter of the season for both teams but there was Houston again with another 3 pointer to put Craigmont back up 4, 52-48. With the game tight,Craigmont ran a little clock and got what appeared to be an easy lay up by senior Kymer Levy but he missed the easy 2 after Bearden’s defense broke down however they couldn’t convert giving it back to Craigmont and Bearden was forced to foul. Jordan Washington would make both free throws to make it 59-55 with 36.6 seconds left. Bearden had it’s chances including a “Champions aren´t made in the gyms. great one after Greene blocked Craft’s lay up but they would come right back and turn it over where it ended up in the hands of Craigmont with Champions are made from something they have them fouling Calvin Chambers who iced last night’s game with 2 free deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision.” throws. Well,I don’t have to tell you what he did, 2 free throws later and - Muhummad Ali flings at the rim by Bearden, the celebration got under way as the Chiefs stormed the floor as Triple A state champions, 61-55.

Regional convention PHOTO wrap -up

Chapter tradition continues... The administration and faculty have affectionately dubbed every Tuesday, Alpha Dress Up Day. This was a chapter tradition urged strongly by Brother Dexter Anoka. The tradition allows the campus the opportunity to see black men in a different light and also allows the brothers the opportunity to show off their very best.

Many brothers find it as friendly competition to see who will outdo who each Tuesday. The look that this day gives the brothers is something that they won’t be able to grasp until they peek from someone else’s eyes, but for an older brother, I see the impact that it has on how much the campus admires Alpha Phi Alpha for continuously setting the standard.

College days swiftly pass... Graduation always seem to be sort of a bittersweet moment for me, as you struggle to be extremely proud of one reaching that milestone in life, while also realizing that you will miss them tremendously. This semester, we see the commencement of Brother James Buchanan (The G.O.L.D.E.N. Army), Brother Joshua Wilson (The 3 T.I.T.A.N.S. of Triumph), Brother James Winters (The 11 Immortal Sons of F.A.T.E.), and Brother Erick Daniel (The G.O.L.D.E.N. Army). Each brother brought a unique talent to the chapter and although we hate to lose them, we are confident that they will go off and do bigger and better things for themselves. Congratulations to each and every one of you and we wish you nothing but success in your future. 06

Black male summit —akron, ohio

Delegates from the University of Tennessee System (Chattanooga, Martin, and Knoxville) convened in Akron, Ohio for what was to be a very memorable experience at the Black Male Summit.

two of the 7 delegates that represented the University of Tennessee at Martin and we acquired a lot of ideas that we are anxious to implement on our campus.

This weekend conference offers educational workshops and inspirational speakers to a diverse audience with the soul purpose of uplifting the black male and educating non-blacks males on how they can better relate to this particular population.

I believe that one of the most important things happened when all of the Martin delegates sat down for dinner and identified problems and issues that we face on our campus, but most importantly discussed strategies and ways that we could fix these issues..

I highly encourage any brother that is interested to attend this summit. You will make life long connections and acquire a whole new respect for being a black male not only at your institution, but in American Society. Regardless of what will come next, this race will not be run again. So i must embrace this race and make the most of time to reach my destination. You see, these are our laps to run, and they will soon be behind us rather than before. So today i must run with the awareness that each lap, in fact each step, does count.

Miss Black & gold Update A woman of style, sophistication, and grace by the name of Gabrielle Mary Lewis became the 2nd Miss Black & Gold for the Tau Psi Chapter. The brothers knew that this Queen was special.

Alumni Network would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to our Queen, Miss Gabrielle Mary Lewis and wish her much success as she travels to

Washington State to do a exchange program.

“It is not sufficient to see and to know the beauty of a work. We must feel and be affected by it”

Gabrielle would go on to win the District Competition in Chattanooga, TN and would be set to represent the chapter and the District at the Regional competition in Raleigh, NC. Against, very stiff competition, OUR QUEEN held her own and definitely showed a sense of elegance and class that set her apart from the other contestants. Although, she did not win the regional competition, she was the winner in our hearts. The brothers of the Martin Alpha

Martin alpha alumni network website In this day and age, the world wide web is the number one source for anyone to stay connected. Emails and blogs have replaced the more conventional methods of writing letters and Facebook and Twitter are the leading means of communication amongst friends and relatives. We felt it necessary to start a website that would connect the old with the new and create a place where our alumni would be able to visit and see the accomplishments of the chapter as well as celebrate our storied history. At the end of the summer, the Martin Alpha Alumni network will unveil the website to the public. We encourage the brotherhood to visit the website and check on it’s progress throughout
