Danube shapes Linz Do you know the European Capital of Culture, which will tempt you to the banks of the Danube? A city trip to Linz changes your perspective and refreshes your spirit. It invites you to a pleasant stopover by the Danube. Dive into a varied cultural experience, into stories from the past and the future. In 2014 and 2015, Linz looks onto the second largest river in Europe: the route of emperors and kings, cyclists, and hikers. The creative location for culture and cuisine.

Danube shapes Linz Have you ever asked what it means for a city to be by the longest river in Europe? How a river like that shapes a city? In 2014, Linz is looking for answers to that. Exhibitions, installations, and events of all kinds show art, nature, and industry, and make the developments on the banks of the Danube comprehensible. Feel the force of the waves on a

ARCHITECTURE, ART, AND MUSIC BY THE DANUBE The heart of the inspiring and forwardlooking cultural city of Linz was built by the Danube. The Brucknerhaus – Linz’s top location for ambitious music – was its figurehead, and the Ars Electronica Center and the Lentos Kunstmuseum followed. The transformation from a city of steel to one of culture is demonstrated by the large-format metal sculptures of forum metall in the Donaupark, where the whole of Linz crowds to the green spaces and the water in summer.

boat trip, hike or bike along the banks. Strengthened by regional specialities and a slice of Linzer Torte, we dare you to try something new, and to discover the culture of the region. Because there’s lots to explore and enjoy.

You can come here for all number of reasons: To clear your head, sunbathe, swim, cuddle, run ... and to dive into music, literature, and art at the festivals and celebrations by the Danube. Many of the cultural events in the Donaupark take place free of charge, under the motto “Culture for all”, and are just waiting to be enjoyed. INTERACTIVE WAVES

The Ars Electronica Center is not just a homage to the mighty river in an architectural sense: The installation “BLUE” delivers real-time visualisations of the Danube’s flow speed and water level. It also simulates the wave DANUBE AS FESTIVAL VENUE formation of the murmuring river. For the people of Linz and their guests, A visit to voestalpine Stahlwelt is the river is the city’s main life stage.

6

also pretty impressive. Not just steel flows there. Thanks to the brand-new 30-metre-long interactive panorama, you can learn more about the steel plant on the river. It needs water from the Danube to transport raw materials and to produce high-quality car bodies. THE RIVER OF DEVELOPMENT History lovers are in the best hands in the Schlossmuseum. At the exhibition on the First World War with the title “Life in Wartime”, you begin to comprehend that the War brought drastic changes, even to parts of the country that were far from the action. Incidentally, it is possible to turn on the wheel of time in the exhibition

“Nature in Upper Austria”. You’ll quickly look a 9-metre primeval shark in the eye, follow the development of the river, or how the foothills of the Alps were formed. And all that while today’s visitors swim against the current in the Danube Aquarium. WATER: HEARING, SEEING, AND TRADING You seem to hear the flowing of water in the Musiktheater. You definitely hear it at the Klangwolken or on a visit to the Brucknerhaus. The Danube themes certainly become visible in the Lentos Kunstmuseum, flooded with light, or in the Stadtmuseum Nordico. On the one hand, the history of the river in the city is recounted, and on the other,

you trace the most precious resource in the world. Because “Clean Water” is becoming an increasingly precious commodity. It’s true, Linz has plenty of it, but what does the future hold? Culture, nature, and industry – this triad shapes Linz. Here, all the colours of the world are reflected on the banks of the Danube, stories are told for those of every age, and interrelations become visible. www.linz2014.at

We generally think of Paradise as It begins upriver in Passau, and leads something not of this world. MAGICAL At the spots with the loveliest views, a total of 165 picnic areas beckon you to linger and also to immerse yourself in this or that tale of the Danube. For storyteller Helmut Wittmann has taken 120 old Danube legends and retold them for the presentation boards at the picnic areas on the Donausteig. THE PRIMA DONNA OF CYCLE PATHS Covering a stretch – of any length you choose – of the Danube Cycle Path in Linz is practically a must for touring cyclists, as well as sporty bikers. The famous long-distance route begins (or ends) in Passau and extends beyond Vienna, and is one of Europe’s most popular cycle paths. And for good reason – as the track, most of which runs far from roads, leads through the richly varied, idyllic landscapes by the great river. The route is lined with numerous cosy garden restaurants, sterling inns, and cyclist-friendly hotels, which provide culinary and other amenities on the journey.

Anton Bruckner organ virtuoso The composer lived in and around Linz and influences the region even today. It‘s a very special experience to walk in the great symphonist‘s footsteps and to hear the works that have left such a deep impression on the world of music. At the organs of Linz and St. Florian, Anton Bruckner (1824–1896) altered the course of music – irrevocably, irresistibly, and in an unprecedentedly modern way.

Changing technology and architecture Linz is an economically successful city and, due to its geographical position and infrastructure, an attractive location for companies. Linz is home to over 6,400 business enterprises and there are more jobs than inhabitants here. Banks, steel and industrial plants, and mechanical engineering companies have settled in the city on the Danube. The universities and the Fachhochschule stimulate development through powerful innovative ideas. Lovers of architecture appreciate the way in which the past, present, and future combine to create something new in Linz. The sense of ongoing change is palpable here.

“The steel plant on the river” voestalpine and the Danube are closely connected – water is not just one of the most important manufacturing and auxiliary resources in the whole production process, but also a valuable transport route. Approx. 40% of the transport of raw materials is by ship on the Danube. The sustainable use of the river is an important goal for voestalpine – in this way, necessary water for production is recycled and directed back into the outlet channel for the Danube.

Contemporary history A city’s past Linz presents itself as a city that is consciously getting to grips with its history. Two turning points of contemporary Austrian history are inextricably bound up with the city: In 1934, the civil war between the conservative government and portions of the Social-Democrat party began here. In March 1938, the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, was put into effect in Linz by Adolf Hitler, who went to school here.

MAUTHAUSEN MEMORIAL WWW.MAUTHAUSEN-MEMORIAL.AT Between 1938 and 1945, more than 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned at the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen and its over 40 satellite camps; about half of those people were murdered there. A few years after the end of the War, a memorial was erected on the site of the former concentration camp. You can visit the preserved historical buildings and constructions, the Steinbruch Wiener Graben with the “Todesstiege” – stairs of death, more than 20 national monuments and, since 6 May, two new permanent exhibitions and a new memorial room, the “Room of Names”. Through the confrontation with the historical site, the tours of the memorial open up the question of how it was possible to deport hundreds of thousands of people, and to torture and murder them in the middle of society. The exhibitions “The concentration camp Mauthausen 1938–1945” and “The crime scene of Mauthausen – a search for traces” show more than
