HSMSE Alzheimer's Walk By: Ryan Tan The Alzheimer’s walk at 97th Street and Riverside Drive on October 18th was held to raise funds towards a cure for Alzheimer's. It is the largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The organization behind the walk is the The Alzheimer's Association.Walk to End Alzheimer’sone of the largest organizations for the awareness of alzheimer's. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions causing memory loss and confusion. In order to help people with this disease, walks are held annually in more than 60 communities nationwide with participants of all ages and abilities. During the walk, many activities took place, including breakfast for the walkers participating. This consisted of bagels, muffins and other pastries with cream cheese or jam. Drinks were also provided with choices between water, juice, hot chocolate and coffee. Another activity during this event was the option to donate $5 to get highlight or wigs in the color purple with the money raised going toward curing Alzheimer's. Additionally there was the option of donating directly to the organization. Prizes were given depended on how much was donated. These prizes included Tshirts, beanies, medallions, certifications, scarfs, ties, and cufflinks. Flowers were given out to people with different colors representing people who have died from Alzheimer's. One of the many reasons people walked in today's event was to keep the people who have died and can no longer experience life in the memories of their loved ones. Vanda Lin who volunteered at the kids corner stated that her favorite part was seeing the kids happy face as they played games and received gifts. Overall the event went really well with many people showing up to volunteer and support the cause. A plentiful of funds were also raised through donations that will help move towards the goal of curing Alzheimer's.

HSMSE Breast Cancer Awareness Walk By: Anita Ovbude On Sunday, October 18th, members of the HSMSE Key Club volunteered for the Breast Cancer Awareness walk. The walk takes place in Central Park and the HSMSE volunteers were placed at 97th street near the 2 mile mark of the walk. This walk is organized by The American Cancer Society. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk “is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about steps we can take to reduce our risk of getting breast cancer, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease with breast cancer research, information and services, and access to mammograms for women who need them.” The American Cancer Society “is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.” They fund groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it, and discover new ways to cure it. At this walk, volunteers from HSMSE cheered on the walkers and gave words of encouragement. We gave out high fives, hugs and even created our own cheer: “come on walkers, you can do it! Put a little power to it!” Although it was cold and the walk was long, HSMSE volunteers created a positive energy. The volunteers agreed that the smiles and happiness from the people were uplifting and had a warming feeling. The people loved the cheering and were encouraged by them. The shouts of “good job” were motivating and everyone joined in on screaming and cheering. Being able to laugh with them (which we did a lot) made it all worth it.

As team leader, the best part of the walk to me was the variety of people at the walk. There were children, adults, senior citizens, dogs and teens all together. Different races all came together and put aside everything else just to support. It was a cold day and a Sunday which is usually used for lazing about but the people did not let that stop them. Most people were holding signs or had shirts/sweaters that showed who they were doing the walk for. Unfortunately there were also some remembrance signs but it showed the love that they have for those people in their life. Even if they already lost their loved one they still took strides to prevent others from losing those whom they loved. Lastly the best part of this event was the amount of survivor ribbons a t the walk. The women were just inspiring and truly were walking examples of the goal of the American Cancer Society. Their dedication and strength gave us a reason to continue cheering them on because they deserve it. The walkers and their happy and determined faces was what put a smile on ours throughout the hours that we were there.

HSMSE Out of the Darkness By: Ryan Tan The Out of Darkness Darkness Community Walk to Prevent Suicide at Wagner Park Battery Park City on Sunday October 25th was an event organized by the AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)as a way to raise funds for suicide prevention and awareness to the problem. The American Foundation for Suicide Preventionis a nationwide organization with walks in hundreds of communities. It has given grants totaling to more than 20 million dollars to prominent scientists and promising young investigators to support studies aimed at understanding and preventing suicide since 2002. The researchers they fund span disciplines and institutions across the USA and increasingly around the world. Suicide is complex and reflects a mix of genetic, biological, psychological, cultural and environmental factors. There are 40,000 suicides in the USA alone each year. Participants walked 3 to 5 miles together to help prevent suicide, raise awareness and end the stigma that surrounds depression and other mental disorders. With each step, walkers helped save lives, honor loved ones lost to suicide, and raised funds to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s vital mission.

At the event, there were different colored necklaces given out with each color representing a different reason for walking. T-shirts were given out to people who raised at least $150 to support the cause. People had the option of placing a sticker with the name of the person who the were participating for on it as a way to honor them. This event was a great success in raising both awareness and funds and with the large amounts of

people coming to support the cause.
