There are a bunch of deadlines coming up, for elections and awards. Be sure to keep those in mind if you’re interested. In this newsletter, you will find information regarding the Children’s Miracle Network and the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center—both are worthy causes to fundraise for. HSMSE: The LUNGevity Breathe Deep Walk By: Dilan Bautista On November 7 the LUNGevity Foundation organized a Lung Cancer walk to raise money for research as well as hope for many who have the condition or survived it. The HSMSE Key Clubbers and I offered our duties as volunteers to help the organization's efforts to setup the event and make it more comfortable for the people participating in the walk. The event took place in Hudson River Park, Pier 46 and as expected, the Pier provided a beautiful scene of the Hudson River and New Jersey. The organization expected us at 7:00am with the duty of Course Marshall. As Course Marshall we were responsible of placing signs and decorations along the walking path and later, cheer and encourage the walking participants to keep going. The environment around the event couldn’t have been better. On a map of Pier 46, illustrated were multiple refreshments stands, food stands, a performing DJ, places where children could play, and of course, donation stands. Someone who would just be passing by Pier 46 would’ve stopped and become enthralled by the energy generated by the participants, music, food, and atmosphere. As the walk commenced there was no doubt that many of the runners and joggers passing by would suddenly become curious about what was going on. Our group was split up into pairs alongside the walking path, and each one of us tried to cheer on the participants. Ever so often we would catch a glimpse of a survivor and cheer them on as well. It was genuinely fun, and the provided food was very sustaining. The event included over a thousand participants and raised $154,818.56 in donations. As the walk came to an end, the ending ceremony sealed the event with raffles, prizes, and a big thanks from the organization.

Children’s Miracle Network The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMH) was established nationally in 1983 to help children by actively supporting improved health care for millions of young people around the word. CMNH's mission is to generate funds and awareness programs for the benefit of children served by its associated hospitals, now numbering more than 170 nationwide. Donations to the Children’s Miracle Network goes to support research and training, purchase equipment and pay for uncompensated care, all to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. Approximately 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital every minute which is one child every second. Donate to the Children’s Miracle Network today!

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center was founded in 1991 when the New York District of Kiwanis International and its foundation agreed to form an alliance with the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island. The foundation supports pediatric trauma efforts at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center as well as programs throughout the area to protect the safety of children and to improve the ability of the local emergency medical services response teams. Kiwanis helps to meet the needs of families with children suffering from trauma. Trauma takes the lives of 25,000 children each year and leaves another 120,000 children permanently disabled. An estimated 25% of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented with proper and prompt care. Kiwanis needs our help to raise money to help these families with children that are suffering from trauma.
