Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Hello Division 11 Pandas! I hope everyone is enjoying the last few days of summer. In this newsletter, you’ll find valuable information about the International Board, the Youth Opportunities Fund, and gearing up for another school year of service! Remember to tell your club members to come to the September Divisional as well as Fall Rally. Moreover, look out for an announcement about the September RLC event soon. As we enter the school year, be sure to publicize Key Club and everything that we’re about to new students through club fairs, homerooms, flyers, and everything in between! I know the fall season is usually filled with numerous walks, fundraisers, and service projects, so I’m excited to see all of the great work I know we will do. As always, feel free to contact me about anything and everything—I’m here to help in any way that I can! Sincerely, Emily Li 2015 – 2016 Division 11 Lieutenant Governor

NYDKC Key Club of the Month Congratulations to Stuyvesant High School Key Club for being chosen as the New York District’s Club of the Month for August!

The Great Picnic

By: Caleb Sooknanan/ Stuyvesant High School Key Club

Every year, Key Clubbers, Circle Kers, and Kiwanians altogether devote their time to providing service and leadership within their communities, so it is rather fitting to have at least a day to honor our accomplishments. The lasting friendships, the heartwarming success stories, and the cooperation of the New York District, all embodied within one event. At first, it would seem astonishing that a picnic in Flushing Meadows Corona Park would embrace such things in roughly four to five hours, but it did, and in such stellar fashion. Even though I arrived late from volunteering with Summer Streets that morning, the wait was, in every sense of the word, worthwhile. It was amazing enough to meet Key Clubbers and Circle Kers from all over New York, whether it be Key Club Divisions 2 and 4S, or the Circle K Southern Tier and Western Divisions, and everything in between. Besides, there always remains a subtle difference between knowing someone in person and knowing someone on Facebook. I could elaborate on the numerous food options and activities (the balloon and wheelbarrow activities were my personal favorites), but the newly formed friendships stood out the most, much like a sharpened pencil in a pencil case or that one rose in a grass patch (a sight I would delight in seeing). The picnic rejuvenated my interest in Kiwanis and the ability to share a love of service with a love for friendship; these entities might not always be interchangeable, but at least I can admit that here in New York District, they are all that I need. Of course, there was a certain satisfaction when I helped clean up the picnic area with new and familiar faces. Who ever said that service can’t be fun?

Food Bank

BY: Kevin Hom/Nest+m Key Club

One of NEST+m Key Club’s ongoing service projects is with Food Bank’s pantries and soup kitchens all around NYC. On July 24th, 2015, I was fortunate to volunteer at the pantry in West Harlem. The pantry is setup in an efficient, supermarket style way so that “shoppers” can find what they are looking for. Food Bank also employs a point system when shopping in order to help facilitate a balanced diet. While volunteering, I met a man named McLeod. He was in a wheelchair, but that didn't stop him from volunteering every Tuesday there (he wanted to volunteer today even though it was Friday) and playing sports. He was a inspirational guy who taught me how to stock the canned goods and in the interim talked to me about life and staying true to myself. Volunteering with Food Bank is a humbling experience which also coincides with the Governor’s project: “Hunger”.

August Divisional Recap On August 17th 2015, the August Divisional took place at Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Park. Besides the usual recaps of events and announcements, several Key Club members also participated in the Elemonate Challenge. Each person ate a slice of lemon to raise awareness for the Eliminate Project. Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor Aaron Cheung was also awarded the Elimidallion for all his hard work and dedication to the cause. Be sure to join us at the September Divisional on September 30th! Back to School Here are a few things to keep in mind as we start a new school year:  Schedule club meetings as soon as possible once school starts  Plan events early: start planning now! A lot of walks and other service projects have set dates, so you can begin to contact the project coordinators.  Collect dues as soon as possible! Remember the deadline for Early Bird Dues is November 1st. The regular deadline is December 1st.  A good way to recruit new members is at a club fair. If your school doesn’t have one, going classroom to classroom is a great method as well.  Be sure to check out the Key Club store for helpful and FREE literature: https://store.kiwanis.org/KeyClub/Subcategory/Literature.htm

Youth Opportunities Fund What is the Youth Opportunities Fund?

Have a service project in mind you’ve always wanted to put into action? The YOF is your best friend! The Youth Opportunities Fund is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities.

That sounds great! How can I apply?

There is one funding cycle for the YOF. The application must be received by October 15 at 11:59PM EST. Applications are reviewed by the Key Club International YOF committee at their November meeting. Funding notifications are mailed by January 1st! Find the application here: http://keyclub.org/Libraries/Interior_Page_Photos/KeyClub_YOF_Application_20 15_cycle.sflb.ashx
