ENRICHMENT ROUND UP

It has been a very difficult first season in the British College Sport League playing against some very good teams from across the region. The standard of opposition was very high and our players have struggled to record a victory so far this season. However, there have been some positives to come out of this. At times we have showed great commitment and desire at training sessions and during

Football

games, hopefully our players will become a stronger unit and a better team from this experience. The numbers have also been very good with the players turning up week in week out against all odds. Well done to you all!

LCB Hawks (Rugby League) This season has been a challenging one for the LCB Hawks as most of the squad were in their first year at College. It was tough playing against colleges such as Calderdale and Wakefield as the players were older and they had professional academy players in their teams. However the LCB Hawks have progressed tremendously, showing great commitment throughout. Final Results for 2013/14

The progression showed with 2 great wins at the back end of the season against Huddersfield New College and York College, and although LCB Hawks have been unable to train together as a group, the players deserve credit for their attitude and commitment. LCB Hawks have represented the College with maturity and good discipline and we are all looking forward to continuing the training and fixtures throughout 2014 and into 2015.

Golf In partnership with Roundhay Golf Course and Sportivate funding, we held 6 weeks of golf training from a qualified and respected golf coach for 16 students. The students learnt the basic techniques and golf etiquette as well as having the opportunity to play 18 holes on the course. The response from the students was very positive and they all had a great experience and lots of fun too.

DJ Club The DJ Club has been a great success this year with many students dropping in to learn the tricks of the trade about becoming a DJ. If you fancy a go then please see QG in the common room at the North Street site every Wednesday from 12.30pm until 1.30pm.

Table Tennis Club This year has seen the introduction of a number of new sports to the enrichment programme, thanks to the new College Sports Maker role. From research conducted at the College, table tennis has proven to be hugely popular and has led to the purchase of table tennis tables for various sites. We have also received some funding to allow a number of students to participate in a 6 week table tennis coaching programme. This was well attended and has led to the formulation of a Table Tennis league which is played after college. Part of the funding has also allowed a volunteer to gain some professional development.

Gym Sessions, Circuits & Swimming Every week students have the opportunity to go to Virgin Active and take part in various aspects of health and fitness. A wide range of activities are available at this 5 star fitness centre including cardio machines, a fitness studio, weights, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. All of these activities give our students confidence, a positive mental attitude, improve self-esteem as well as meeting new friends and keeping fit. This year we have had fitness expert Darren Radfeilder on hand to guide and advise our students on all aspects of leading a more positive and healthier life.

What the students think “The fitness sessions at Virgin Active break up the week for me so it’s not all work work work… plus I get to keep fit and meet different people from different courses, which makes it more comfortable when I am at College”.

“I think the gym is great because you can go with your friends and it doesn’t take up too much time, it also motivates me to keep fit”. “The gym has motivated me to keep fit, lose weight and also gives me more energy”. If you want to join the gym, please ase see Denis in the SU office.

During the 6 weeks students were assessed to see who would benefit from the programme. There was one outstanding candidate, a mature student, Justin Van Der Weide who has a passion for the sport, but also wanted to get involved and help develop the league. Justin attended every week, recruited individuals and is now helping with the monitoring of the league, from devising fixtures to recording results. He will also be participating in a Level 1 Table Tennis Coaching course, which will help Justin to assist in delivery of coaching and lead the sessions. 5 13774A LCB Student Newsletter May 2014 V3.indd 5

Tips on how to write a CV What is a CV? A Curriculum Vitae is an easy to read summary of your education, qualifications and work experience. You use it to show your key strengths so that an employer can see quickly and easily whether you have what they’re looking for. It’s a formal document which should be sent with a covering letter and needs to be typed and well presented.

How should your CV look? ■ Your CV should always be word processed ■ Keep it short – a maximum of 2 pages ■ Keep it neat and tidy ■ Stick to a standard font style with font size no smaller than 11 ■ Print on white paper

Top tips ■ Remember that a CV sets the impression for the employer, so make sure it is neat and clean (don’t send crumpled or stained copies) ■ Run a spell check on the document to check for any spelling or grammar mistakes ■ Ensure that all of your personal details are correct as they may be contacting you soon ■ You may have to change your CV or covering letter to make it right for the job you’re applying for

What should a CV include? ■ Contact details including, name, address, telephone number and e-mail address ■ Personal profile including an overview of your skills ■ Education and qualifications ■ Skills and work – include paid work, work experience or voluntary placements

For more help on CV writing see Student Services

■ Information about particular skills e.g. driving licence or a first aid qualification ■ Hobbies and interests ■ References

New Build The College has had long standing plans to build new premises and provide first class facilities for construction education and training and finally those plans are being realised. A new building of 8000m2 is being built on land just off Hunslet Lane, south of the city centre which will allow students to enjoy their studies in modern, attractive surroundings. Three College sites (Stourton, Parkside Lane and Lockwood Way) will close and courses that are currently delivered at these sites will move to the new building. Courses on offer will include electrical, gas, brickwork and roofing. It is intended that the new building will be a resource itself for teaching and learning in the 21st century, giving students the opportunity to see how services

work in a live building, incorporating PV panelling and biomass technology. The building will have a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’. It is a very exciting time for the College and it is the first step to eventually having all provision located on two sites. The main site at North Street will be retained and it is hoped that within the next few years, the College will also be able to move courses currently delivered at the Millwright Street site in to Phase 2 of the Hunslet Lane site. The new build is due to be ready for students to occupy the building in early 2015.

TOP THREE THE

SURVIVAL/HORROR GAMES

Outlast

Newly released onto the PlayStation Store, Red-barrels’ nerve-shredding survival horror game puts you in the shoes of the world’s most daring/ stupid journalist, Miles Upshur. The game begins with your character following up an anonymous tip, leading you to a seemingly abandoned mental asylum- totally unaware of the horror which lies ahead... If you enjoy a good scare and you don’t mind having nightmares for a couple of weeks, I personally recommend this game, despite sections where things start getting a little repetitive; playing hide and seek with the increasingly grotesque occupants and completing the various objectives - get it whilst it’s still free on the PlayStation store!

The Last of Us

A post-apocalyptic gaming experience brought to us by the developers of Naughty-dog Studios; “The last of us” features beautiful HD graphics and an equally beautiful written story; focusing on the game’s main characters, Joel and Elle, following their seemingly hopeless survival in the remnants of a near future America. From colossal concrete skyscrapers to the individual blades of grass the attention to detail is just phenomenal; it is potentially the prettiest looking game to ever have been released to the PS3. One of the most unforgettably unique, heartfelt and equally brutal gaming experiences ever brought to the PlayStation 3 - it is simply unrivalled in so many ways!

REVIEW BY: MARCUS DEVONPORT CONSTRUCTION & THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT STUDENT

The Walking Dead series 1 - Episode 1

An immersive story driven adventure, newly made available on the Kindle Appstore. The opening chapters of the series follow the actions of the game’s lead character, Lee Everett, a condemned criminal, who is granted the second chance of life, in a world devastated by the undead. The Game-play of “The Walking Dead” is a totally original concept; focusing on conversation, forming relationships with other survivors and making those difficult choices; the storyline deviates according to your previous decisions - and lives hang in the balance. “choose to save a boy’s life” or “leave him behind, to ensure the safety of your group”- the decision is yours to make and you will be forced to live with the consequences... Choices during these dire situations will affect relationships between yourself and other characters and will ultimately decide who will walk beside you in the following episodes. The appearance of familiar faces from the TV series and its quirky comic book style graphics keep the game true to the original graphic novel series- however the game suffers from a clunky control system, freezing, bugs and other glitches - which ultimately are the only reasons preventing this game from becoming an absolute masterpiece.
