STUDY PROGRAMMES Our study programmes give you the opportunity to move into lasting employment or further training. Throughout the course you will be able to take part in enrichment activities as well as valuable site visits and work experience, giving you more opportunities to develop your skills.

Work Experience and Employability Skills

Vocational Course

• Volunteering

As part of the study programme you will work towards a qualification in your chosen subject. You will attend college between 2 and 4 days a week. You will spend time in the classroom learning theory and the rest of the time will be spent in the workshop. English & Maths English and maths skills are really important in both life and the construction industry, from working out measurements, prices, and quotes to interpreting site plans and communicating with customers. You will be required to undertake English and maths as part of your study programme, the qualification you study will depend on your GCSE results. You will either study functional skills or GCSEs.

All students on a study programme will have work related learning each year, this may include: • Work experience • Trips and visits to the workplace and factories • Community projects Tutorials You will have the opportunity to have regular one to one sessions with your tutor to discuss your progress and any issues you may have. You will also have group tutorial sessions where you will learn: • Personal and social development • Health and wellbeing sessions • Employability skills

APPRENTICESHIPS If you are ready to start work and earn a salary, and want to learn and get qualifications, then an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. Training

Work Based Learning Adviser

Depending on the apprenticeship, you will attend College one day a week, or on a block release basis, for between one and four weeks at a time. You will learn the theory and skills so that you can carry them out in the workplace.

You will regularly meet with your adviser to discuss your progress and check how things are going.

Workplace When you’re not at College, you will spend the rest of your time at work, putting into practice all of the knowledge and skills you have learnt. Functional Skills You will be required to undertake English and maths as part of your apprenticeship.

Architects design buildings that meet the needs of the client in a creative and environmentally responsive way; they take responsibility for leading the project from start to finish. Ideal if you like being involved in the design process and have an eye for detail What’s it all about? Architectural technologists are proficient in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and will attend site meetings. They often work in a supportive role with other construction professionals. What skills and qualities do I need? • Good organisational skills • Good problem solving skills • Ability to work in a team

They use traditional woodworking tools as well as specialised power or hand tools for cutting, shaping, smoothing and finishing. What skills and qualities do I need? • A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work • The ability to follow drawings, plans and written or spoken instructions • A creative eye How much could I earn? BUILDING CONTROL OFFICER Ideal if you like to make sure things are done correctly What’s it all about? Building control officers carry out the assessment of building projects and inspect site work to ensure it meets the Building Regulations. They may be employed by local authorities or as approved inspectors who advise on appropriate design solutions. What skills and qualities do I need? • Good organisational skills • Good communication skills • A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work How much could I earn? Starting salaries can range from £21,000 to £26,000 a year. Experienced inspectors can earn between £27,000 and £38,000. Senior inspectors can earn up to £50,000 a year. Ideal if you like designing and have an interest in engineering What’s it all about? Building services engineers are responsible for the design, specification and management of systems in new and existing buildings creating a safe and comfortable environment. This includes heating, lighting, water supplies, plumbing, control systems and fire, security and alarm systems. Ideal if you have an interest in buildings and want to be out and about all day What’s it all about? Building surveyors offer professional advice on all factors affecting existing buildings such as building defects, alterations, renovations and extensions. They work mostly on site to monitor the performance of structures and come up with ways to improve them or correct flaws in their design. What skills and qualities do I need? • Good observational skills • Good organisational skills • A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work How much could I earn? Newly qualified surveyors earn between £18,000 and £22,000 a year. Experienced surveyors earn between £23,000 and £38,000 a year and senior staff with chartered status can earn over £50,000 a year. CIVIL ENGINEER Ideal if you like being in charge or want to be out and about all day What’s it all about? Civil engineers are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the built environment, including projects such as bridges, roads, railways, airports, canals, dams, and power stations. Civil engineers can either be consulting engineers who advise on projects and design them or contractors who construct the structures. What skills and qualities do I need? • A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work • Good leadership skills • The ability to work well in a team

Ideal if you want a physically demanding job and have a good head for heights What’s it all about? Roof Slaters & Tilers work on new roofs and repair and refurbish old roofs. SHOPFITTER Ideal if you want to work with your hands and be out and about all day What’s it all about? Shopfitters make and install the fixtures and fittings in everything from offices and restaurants to shops and bars. They also build and refurbish shop fronts and doorways. They work closely with other tradespeople such as tilers, electricians and plumbers.

How long is the course? • Level 2 NVQ Diploma – 2 years • Level 3 NVQ Diploma – 13 months

Ideal if you are interested in designing and impacting the future of transport systems What’s it all about? Transport planning technicians solve problems like traffic jams and find innovative, sustainable solutions to transport needs locally, nationally and internationally. What skills and qualities do I need? • A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work • IT skills • Innovative thinking How much could I earn? Newly qualified transport planners can earn between £22,000 and £25,000 a year. Experienced and senior planners can earn between £30,000 and £50,000 a year. Top consultants may earn more depending on the contract.

How long is the course? • 2 years with an additional 12 months for skills assessment where required When would I start? October 2018 Where will I study? WALL & FLOOR TILER

Ideal if you want a physically demanding and creative job What’s it all about? Wall & floor tilers fix tiles on the walls and lay tiles on the floors of buildings including hospitals, shopping centres, swimming pools, industrial premises or bathrooms and kitchens. Tilers usually work with ceramic, porcelain and natural products including marble, granite, slate and terracotta. They also follow plans drawn up by an architect, builder or designer. What skills and qualities do I need? • A creative eye • Observant with a keen eye for detail • The ability to work well individually and as part of a team How much could I earn? Trainee tilers’ earnings vary but can be up to £14,000 a year. Qualified tilers can earn between £17,000 and £23,000. Experienced tilers with supervisory or training duties can earn between £25,000 and £30,000. What are my study options? • Study Programme • Apprenticeship

Finished products may be sold to builders’ merchants, DIY stores or used by the furniture-making and construction industries.
