e m o c l We

Hello and welcome to the summer issue of the Student Union Newsletter.

Luke has already introduced some new activities for students, including:

We’ve had a busy year so far with many students enjoying the variety of activities available on the enrichment programme.

Futsal

Table Tennis (Instant Ping Pong)

Team 19 5-a-side Football

IM Basketball

So far, over 300 students have participated in one or more sporting and non-sporting activities. Luke Forgione has recently joined the team as the College Sport Maker; his role at LCB is to increase student participation in sport. It’s to also link the College with community sport opportunities and widen the offer for students to try and help reduce the drop out of young people from sport.

We hope you find this edition of the student newsletter an interesting read and if you have any ideas for future articles, please let us know. Don’t forget, we also have a minibus pick up service available for enrichment activities.

LCB Fun Day LCB are holding the annual Fun Day on Wednesday 12th June, 10am - 2pm. Activities include: • Sumo Wrestling • Live DJ • BBQ • Bun Stall • Tug of War • Stocks • Tombola You will also have the opportunity to win a signed Leeds Rhinos ball or Leeds United shirt. All money raised will be donated to Wheatfields Hospice. If you want to get involved and help raise money for such a great charity, see Denis in the Student Union office.

Comic Relief

Comic Relief brings together the entire nation to raise cash and change lives. The LCB sports and enrichment team, along with the help of some willing tutors here at the College, were able to run a 5-a-side football tournament to raise awareness and donate money for this great cause. There were 13 teams that took part with over 70 students and staff from all College sites participating in the tournament. The event was a great success with Brickies United being the overall winners. In total the College raised £446.89 during the week, this included students and staff wearing onesies and red nose sales. Thank you to everyone who donated!

Go Ape Go Ape was an exciting day out once again for all involved. Go Ape is a fantastic outdoor adventure centre near Pickering, North Yorkshire. Students are able to enjoy hill to hill zip wires with stunning views of the Vale of Pickering and Dalby Forest. The obstacle course includes tarzan swings, tight ropes and 100 feet high zip wires. Students get the chance to go every year and it only costs £5! Jackson Cardiss My name is Jackson Cardiss and I’m studying for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Civil Engineering at the North street site. When I found out about Go Ape, I jumped at the opportunity.

The day started early at 8am with a long drive to the Go Ape site. The weather was clear and everyone was ready. I had the chance to attend Go Ape last year and really enjoyed it but I didn’t finish all six courses. This time round I had another chance to beat the course and face my fear of heights. There were people from all over the College on the trip, from trades to construction management. There was a friendly atmosphere and I’m glad I had the opportunity to go. I thought Go Ape was a fantastic trip and I had lots of fun. I would recommend this trip to anyone, speak to Denis and he can give you more information! 3

g n i t n u H b o J n Tips o

■ Try and get as much work experience as possible as any experience is good

■ Always run a spell check or get someone else to check your CV or application form before you submit it as employers don’t like spelling mistakes and crossings out ■ Research the company and job before you apply. Employers like people who understand what the job is about and who are enthusiastic ■ Be careful what you share on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as employers may check you out online

■ Keep any documents in a safe place i.e. letters you have sent or received. This will help to keep a track of the jobs you have applied for

■ Adapt your CV or covering letter to make it right for the job you’re applying for, don’t expect one CV to cover everything ■ It may take a while to find something you’re interested in or to get an interview. Don’t let it get you down - talk to someone, a friend, a family member or your personal advisor if you’re starting to get fed up ■ You will probably need to travel further to work than you did to school or college but don’t let this put you off applying

Tips on how to write a CV What is a CV? A CV is an easy to read summary of your education, qualifications and work experience. You use it to show all your strong points so that an employer can see quickly and easily whether you have what they’re looking for. It’s a formal document which should be sent with a covering letter and needs to be typed and well presented. Top tips ■ Remember that a CV sets the impression for the employer, so make sure it is neat and clean (don’t send crumpled or stained copies)

Why skills and qualities??

Appling for a job is not just about qualifications, it’s also about your skills and qualities. Employers look out for your skills and qualities on application forms, your CV and at interviews. We pick up different skills through day to day life and in different settings such as at school or college, at home through our interests or out socialising with friends. Employers want people with the following types of key skills: ■ Basic literacy and numeracy skills ■ Communication skills ■ Team working and reliablility

■ Run a spell check on the document to check for any spelling or grammar mistakes ■ Ensure that all of your personal details are correct as they may be contacting you soon ■ You may have to change your CV or covering letter to make it right for the job you’re applying for ■ Keep your CV to a maximum of 2 pages What should a CV include? ■ Contact details including, name, address, telephone number and e-mail address ■ Personal profile including an overview of your skills ■ Education and qualifications ■ Skills and work or other work experience - include paid work,

■ Organisation and planning ■ Ability to meet deadlines ■ Initiative ■ Problem solving ■ IT literate

Discover what you are good at and what employers want ■ Responsible and reliable ■ Punctual and good time management ■ Clean and tidy appearance ■ Patience ■ Helpful ■ Adaptable ■ Hard working ■ Willingness to learn ■ Motivated and enthusiastic

work experience or voluntary placements ■ Information about particular skills e.g. driving licence or a first aid qualification ■ Hobbies and interests ■ References How should your CV look? ■ Your CV should always be word processed ■ Keep it short - a maximum of 2 pages ■ Keep it neat and tidy ■ Stick to a standard font style with type size no smaller than 11 ■ Print on white paper For more help on CV writing see Student Services.

Volunteering Opportunities! Would you like to become a Student Sport Maker?

Here are some great reasons to become a Sport Maker:

Sport Makers, quite simply, make sport happen.

Play more of the sports you enjoy!

You can bring the inspiration, the support, the organisation or the skill to others. Your passion for sport makes the whole thing possible.

This is your chance to keep active through sport and to help others get involved too. It’s rewarding!

You can make sport happen however you want for anyone aged 16+. Here are four suggestions for you to consider. It doesn’t matter if you choose one or all of these ways - they all count as long as you record your hours online.

Through Sport Makers, you can give something back to the community. By helping more people play sport, you’ll feel a great sense of achievement for your efforts.

Organise sport for your friends.

With Sport Makers, you’ll learn lots of new skills that you can add to your CV, so it’s sure to help your career. We’ll hook you up with sporting organisations and clubs and you’ll meet other Sport Makers - some of whom may end up being friends for life!

You provide the encouragement and organisation. You round up your friends to arrange something fun that you can all do together, such as a bike ride. Help out a local sports club or event. You provide the support. You help a local club attract more members or help out at a local event. You have a skill that can be used to do this, you might marshal at a local cycle ride or marathon. Use your ability to help others. You have the skill. You use your sporting knowledge to pass tips on to others, you might motivate your friends during fitness workouts. Set up regular sessions and friendly competitions. You are the leader. You set up and organise local sporting events, such as a 5-a-side football tournament at your local sports centre.

For more information about becoming a Student Sport Maker or Activator, speak to Luke in the Student Union office.

Learn new skills and make new friends!

To find out how you can become a Student Sport Maker visit www.sportmakers.co.uk.

Become a Student Sport Activator and boost your CV!! We have a range of volunteering places in the sports programme, offering a great way to get more involved in your favourite sport and gain experience to add to your CV. As a Student Sport Activator you’ll help deliver the social sport sessions. It’s a rewarding and fun role – and in return we’ll help to fund sportrelated training like UKCC Coaching Awards to develop your skills.

The season so far has been very hard and frustrating. We started off by losing our first 3 games which was very disappointing, however, the players’ heads never dropped and they battled on regardless. This team spirit brought our first victory and what a victory it was, winning with a double figure score line with Hakib Ahmed scoring a massive 7 goals in this game, which is a College record. Then the winter weather hit which brought more frustrating times as the lads were training hard, week in week out, but unfortunately due to the ice and snow the games were called off. We eventually managed to get a game against Bradford College and all the hard work paid off with a 2-1 victory. A special mention to Connor Simpson who’s commitment and dedication throughout the training sessions paid off with the goal of the game. We can now hopefully take this improvement forward to our remaining fixtures and more wins will prevail.

If any students want to start playing in the Pennine League, trials will be held during the summer.

DJ Club The DJ club has been a great success this year with many students dropping in to learn the tricks of the trade and learning all there is to learn about becoming a DJ. If you fancy giving it a go then please pop in to room C4 at North Street every Wednesday from 12.30pm until 1.30pm. Lewis Walwyn “I have done a few DJ workshops be fore but was not serious about it. I originally signed up for rugby and was planning on going to DJ club for the first term, but enjoyed it so much that I got a DJ console for Ch ristmas so I could practice. I’ve foun d music a great escape and it ha s enabled me to experiment with various techniqu es.”

t n e m h c i r n E New Activities! IM Basketball We have got some new and exciting activities for students to take part in, read on to find out more.

Team 19 Football Thanks to a new partnership with West Riding FA, Team 19 is coming to the College. It’s for students that want to play in a 5-a-side tournament to have fun and a kickabout, get some friends together, create a team and play in a weekly league. There is also the opportunity to become a volunteer and help organise the tournament with Luke and Denis.

Futsal Every month there is the opportunity for students to participate against other colleges at the @futsal arena in Leeds. Futsal is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK where the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo homed their skills to become the players they are today.

Table Tennis

(Instant Ping Pong)

There are instant ping pong sets currently available at Lockwood Way, Millwright Street and North Street. Just ask in the Student Services office for the equipment, sign the participation register, attach the net to two tables and get playing. It’s as simple as that! We are also looking for student volunteers who are interested in helping to get the instant ping pong scheme running at their site. No commitment is really required, all we ask is you spread the word and help get students at your site participating.

Students can now play basketball every Wednesday and Thursday at Quarry Hill, just around the corner from North Street and Millwright Street, or alternatively at the Hunslet Club which is closer to Lockwood Way, Parkside Lane and Stourton students.

O2 touch (RU) LCB will hopefully be working with the RFU to bring touch rugby to the College and link with a local RU club to help create a progression route and also offer further opportunities outside the College hours.

Boxing LCB will be working with Raging Bull Boxing Club to nity to gain basic boxing offer students the opportunity king with recognised skills and techniques, working ABBA boxing coaches at one of the leading boxing clubs in West Yorkshire. Students will work towards the school standards boxing coaching scheme, to help create an LCB Boxing Club that will become part of the enrichment programme. There will also be the opportunity to progress onto joining the club as a member if this kick starts your enthusiasm for boxing.

Golf In partnership with Leeds City Golf and Sportivate, funding will bring 6 weeks of golf training from a qualified and respected golf coach for 12 students on a first come first served basis. The training will start in September and the coach will give you basic knowledge around the correct techniques and golf etiquette. After the 6 weeks there is the opportunity for students to participate regularly at the golf club for £5 including a round with clubs, balls and a bag.
